This is a charming boutique type hotel with a French decor. Joan de arc is the theme here. Wonderful art hanging on the walls and a lovely helpful staff. Rooms are small, quaint, (like in France) and very clean. \r Be prepared for one great breakfast in the morning in the dinningroom. \r Its within two or three blocks from China Town and the Cable care stop.\r Would definately recommend to couples.\r more

This hotel is just about a block up the hill from Union Square. The only downside is the hill back up from Union Square is a hefty climb. Otherwise a really quiet location with a parking garage across the street that is less expensive then other parking garages in the area. The hotel is a smaller boutique one. The medium and small rooms are okay for 2 people, but the large rooms are nice sized for this size hotel. They offer 2 choices for breakfast eggs or french toast. For complimentary you can't be choosy. The staff was very helpful, but are not available after 9pm or before 8am, so ask your questions before they leave. The hotel was clean and the bathrooms were nice sized. The price can't be beat for the location. I would stay again. more

Stayed for 4 nights in october, rooms are of decent size, nice and clean. Highlight was the bath tub, was a really deep, enough to fit your whole body under the water. Staff were really friendly. Breakfast was included, this was nice every day,a bit confusing whenyou walk in as no one had said what style this was-self service, table etc, so we actually walked in and grabbed a bowl of cereal before sitting at a table, then a waitress came over and took our order, eggs(any way you like them) bacon, toast and hash browns, just need to leave a few dollars tip. Its a great location, just a short walk away from Union Square. This is not the hotel for people who expect a modern five star hotel. However, it was a nice quaint hotel with lots of character and had a romantic setting. more

I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. The location is great. It is just a few blocks walk from Union Square and Chinatown. The staff was nice and there is a computer in the lobby where you can check e-mail,print your boarding pass etc. I was traveling solo and had a small top floor room that was Very Sunny (with two exposures) #607- it had a desk, 2 chairs a small dresser and a small television. It was charming ( Think old European townhouse hotel) Not perfect ( one night I woke up at 3:00 am and the bathroom had a bad smell -from the pipes I assume- but in the morning it was gone and never returned) and not cookie cutter or bland . The breakfast was always excellent( a full breakfast included in the price or the room) and served in the basement restaurant which is even more charming than the hotel ! All hotels in San francisco add a 14% hotel tax to your bill when you check out- this is not included in the rate that you are quoted - so budget this in when you make your plans. The only other thing that you should know is that it it a steep walk up Powell street to the hotel on Bush Street ( the last block is really steep) It did not bother me but if you will have trouble walking up hills be prepared to take a lot of cabs .Also no matter what the temperatue is when you leave the hotel take a warm sweater or a sweatshirt with you when you leave or you will regret it . The weather gets cold fast when the fog rolls in. I always had a sweater tied around my waist or neck and I always put it on at some point. This Hotel is probably not for everyone( Familys may not appreciate there being an adult male theatre two doors down the block- Always turn to the right as you exit the front door to avoid it)) -But if you are looking for a charming European style townhose hotel that is close to the main touist areas and are traveling as a Couple or a Single Traveler this is a good option at a Very good price to consider. I would stay here again. more

The Cornell de France is charming -- decorated with Impressionist art, each room is unique; there is a period elevator and the owners, Mr and Mrs Lambert, are helpful hosts. The rooms are comfortable with good beds, wi-fi, and windows that actually open. The location is ideal -- steps from the Powell St cable car, two blocks from Union Square in the heart of downtown. Room prices are reasonable and include American style breakfast, The packages, which include parking and some dinners at the excellent Jean d'Arc Restaurant as well as the room and breakfast, are a bargain. more

I was to be in SanFrancisco for a meeting, but wanted a break from the standard fare of business hotels, but didn't want luxury hotel prices. It was also imperative that it be well located and convenient to public transportation. we started the trip poorly, with the flights canceledm issued our connecting flight, and arrived a day late. The hotel was personal and gracious, forgiving the late arrival. We literally had to dump our bags in the lobby and rush to my speaking engagement, for which i was already late. I was a bit concerned about the lack of air-conditioning, but it was delightful. We spend a lot of time in France, and can't stand cheesy cliche French atmosphere. We had some misgivings with the larger than life Joan of Arc wedged in between the realistically small French elevator and the ""cave"" style restaurant. But it was all part of the attempt to fill the charming hotel with as much French memorabilia and charm as possible. Electronically, it was a bit challenging (we had to interrupt the manager's working lunch to ask to be able to print our return boarding passes); but all in all lovely. Close to trolly stops and within easy distances of all major areas of interest, including walking distance from Union Square. I would definitely recommend this tiny oasis to anyone wanting to inject authentic charm into their stay. more

If you want OLD WORLD CHARM and class at all levels go to the Cornell. Never sure when you go to an older site what to expect but this is a winner. I was worried about a 100 year old building but it is fresh and immaculant. Everyone was great but that is because you deal with the owners and their daughter, really cool. Food was fantastic as we had full breakfasts and at dinner sat beside Claude & Micheline Lambert the owners who could not have been more engaging. The hotel is in a perfect location to branch out to all of SF. Cornell get's an A+ and will get all of my referrals to The City! more

This was our 2nd stay at the Cornell and it was as charming as before. The music in the dining area and lobby is magnifigue and the managers are gracious and helpful. A wonderful Asian lady helps in the dining area and the living areas with such generous smiles and greetings. It was a pleasure to still see her there. I am so grateful it is not a chain hotel but has real personality and staff that recognize you. A block away is a Walgreens where you can get day passes for buses and cable cars. There is a small Italian restaurant called Roxanne's Cafe just a few doors down and a green market just 1 block down the street.\r I loved the claw foot bathtub and the ability to open the windows. This hotel is a real gem at a very reasonable price. more

The Orchard is very Asian themed, with Asian art and design noticeable in every room. For a boutique hotel, their rooms are fairly spacious and large. more

When we decided to add a San Francisco stop to our holiday and began looking for a hotel we became totally bamboozled. Every hotel seemed to have comments like ""it's old, what can you expect in SF"" or ""beware of the homeless"" etc. So armed with all this knowledge choosing a hotel was a nightmare and we imagined San Francisco to be not the sought after destination that we'd imagined. So, after many hours searching we finally settled on the Cornell and kept our fingers crossed. more
