i really used to love this place, but it's just not the same anymore because of the new management. it used to be a quirky, one-of-a-kind coffee shop but now it's... the opposite....

North Raleigh's Best Coffee House! 5/18/2011

The Best North Raleigh Coffee House! This place captures the culture of coffee thru consistent quality, knowledge, and practical skill in the art of brewing and crafting great coffee and espresso drinks. The atmosphere is laidback; open and welcoming to all types of patrons young and old from the business professional to the performing artist, housewife, average Joe and more. You can get a great coffee/breakfast/lunch or dinner while enjoying the essence of North Raleigh and its people. This shop makes starbucks look like mcdonalds, caribou like burger king, and it?s a grind like a hotel lobby. Stop by this discrete local Raleigh secret to see for yourself. @cityofraleigh -- tweetme more

Not as good as it was!! :( 4/12/2011

If I had not experienced this place before new management took over I might rate it a 3, but since I have to compare it to the previous management it comes up sadly inadequate. It used to be a comfy spot to hang with friends or work and now it's uncomfortable. The food quality took a nosedive; as did the coffee selection, quality, and value. I really miss the old vibe!! more

what coffee and coffee houses should be! 2/19/2011

The one star rating is completely missing the point and way off. Sure you can compare the previous place to the way it is now, but in all honesty, the ""cave-like"" division of the previous shop was dark and felt more like a world of cubicles than a true coffee shop where you can make eye contact with fellow coffee lovers and those who come in to have a good drink and end up staying to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the world for a while. I've been to the coffee shop owned by the previous owners - once. Now I find myself coming almost every day. If you've ever been passionate about something, you'll recognize how much great energy you can pour into your work (pun intended) - the truth is that New World Coffee serves up really some of the best coffee around. I've visited nearly all the coffee houses in Raleigh and I dare you to compare a drink like the traditional cappuccino available at New World. For those that really want to get to know good espresso...there is no better place. more

Not What it use to be 11/11/2010

I use to go to this coffee shop a lot but it has really gone down hill even with new owners taking over. First they tore down the cozy nook. Now it is one long room with nothing to absorb the sound. What happened to all the great desserts? Tiramisu, cheesecake, pineapple cake? Cookies, muffins and brownies don't cut it. They don't even serve soft drinks anymore. Sorry but not everyone goes to a coffee shop for coffee. Then there are the hours. When you get there at 7pm to study or socialize they close at 8pm. I found some other great shops in the Raleigh area to hang out at. Caribou on Duraleigh, Hope Cafe in Garner is awesome! more

My favorite local coffee shop 5/12/2010

Forget Starbucks and their burned coffee beans! Come here for a great cup, a tasty dessert (homemade!!), and smiles. They rotate in unique wall art frequently and sometimes have a local musician come play. The owner and staff are very friendly. Pros: great drinks, great desserts, atmosphere more

It's still the coffee shop to go to 9/24/2009

This coffee shop is warm and inviting great food great customer services Nice place to meet friends. Pros: great coffee more

Owesome food, great drinks, fantastic workers.good music 9/24/2009

Im sorry but you are quite mistaken...The place is great, food is wonderful and the new paint color on the walls makes the place feel bright and inviting....before it was dark and gothic like. I have met many new people at this wonderful coffee shop and everyone that comes in just LOVES it. It sounds like your an ex employee looking for revenge or something (this is not the right way to do it). Get another job and stop complaining. Everytime i come in i get greeted with a smile and by my name. The new owner is AWESOME and enjoys helping customers when they open up to her. She has helped me alot in the short time she has been here. Also if you need to meet with a group of people this is the perfect place to do so. Every week there is a group in here with an activity in the back room and every first friday its a different environment. So if you dont like the place a smart thing to do is just dont Go and find something else to do than to bother. Pros: Best chicken salad... Cons: cant think of any...check it out for yourselves more

Will never be the same 9/24/2009

This used to be the shop to go to, where the baristas would smile and welcome you in. The atmosphere used to be warm and inviting; you were allowed to sit down and relax for a while. Now the place is an art gallery for some art that is more suited for big businesses, not an independent coffee shop. It is no longer warm with the very cold white walls and the obtrusive art, not to mention, the fact that they never seem to have all the lights on anymore. It feels more like a cave. I have heard from many people that are former patrons about the blatant disrespect from some of the new people there. One example is one of them was cursed at. Another was stared down and overheard the owner saying, ""they need more attractive people here"". In many other occurrences people were told to get a life and that ""their kind"" is not welcome. If you really want to say that this is a great shop to be, please speak for yourself. I do not recommend this coffee shop if you actually wanted to be treated nicely by nice people as well as feel welcome. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Can think of a lot more

frozen drinks 9/18/2009

What a letdown 9/14/2009

Blatent advertising and current employees of this establishment aside, this place is awful. If you don't see at least one cochroach during a visit, cosider yourself lucky (any health inspectors reading this, by the way?). If you do not show up wearing business attire and get treated in a nice manner, this is also lucky. I personally make plenty of money and sometimes want to wear relaxed clothing while I sit in a nice atmosphere drinking coffee and reading the paper. While doing this, I get stared at until I am so uncomfortable that I want to leave. I used to spend a lot of time and money at this place but will cease to do so. It doesn't help that they have taken Larry's Beans- a normally excellent product- and turned it into something entirely disgusting. This is a feat I did not think possible. more

My favorite coffee place in town! 9/14/2009

I started my own business a year ago started visiting all of the coffee shops in Raleigh. After finding New World, I liked it. It was different than the chains in that it doesn't have the chaotic retail feel that Starbucks has (where you have a hard time having a conversation or working without constant distractions). New owners took over several months ago and now it is incredible. I feel more comfortable here. The music isn't as harsh and the employees are incredible. They have given it a face lift that includes incredible art. I encourage everyone I know to come here. I am here all the time. It feels like a scene out of Cheers when I walk in. The people know me by name and I feel so welcome. The other thing that makes it stand out from its competition is that you can get a healthy meal here as well. They have a great menu of homemade food. I highly recommend this place. If you haven't been in a while, come on it and if you see me (Diane), say hello. Pros: Welcoming Staff, Great Menu (not just desserts) Cons: I can't walk here. more

Great Atmosphere, Great Coffee, Great Food 9/14/2009

I've been coming to New World over the years and I really like the new look and the new people working there. Friendly. Relaxed. Just about right for my tastes. Plus, the menu is growing so there are more things to eat now. AND... the artwork is awesome. I feel like I'm in an artist's studio! I can really feel my mood lift when I walk in. Check it out - I bet you'll fall in love with the place. Bob Pros: Inviting atmosphere, good staff more

Great: Place, Coffee, Sandwiches, Art, Location 9/12/2009

Being right off Glenwood across from Bunkeys Car wash on Pleasant Valley road makes it easy to find. Good place to meet other business people for one on one's . Love the new art that is there! I have met people for breakfast and lunch there as well as just quick meetings for business. Pros: Great Coffee, food, ART and free wireless for customers! Cons: Would like to see one like this in every city! more

great chichen salad 9/5/2009

came across this coffee shop yesterday and the chichen salad wrap is great , great coffee the two girls that were working were great. Pros: best coffee in raleigh more

Gets better with new management! 9/5/2009

Growing up in Raleigh I found this place about 5 years ago and came often. When the management switched I def. saw a difference, I actually get greeted right when I enter the door! The people that work here are so much nicer, I never liked to talk to the old baristas so I would always keep to myself but not anymore I love having random conversations with the new owner and her new employees. I don't really understand the last two reviews, those people must have been on some illegal substances to make up obsurd things like that, everything they've said is the complete opposite of how it actually is. The owner and employees are so welcoming before they just acted smug and indifferent to all the customers, I def. didn't feel welcomed but now I stay for long periods of time because I love the coffee, the sandwiches are always tasty and the new management is great. Pros: variety of specials and nice baristas more

Ruined by New Management 9/2/2009

This really was a great place to hang out - had the absolute best desserts ever and a great atmosphere. Note the use of past tense, however. I went in today, my first time since the apparent change of hands, and quickly realized something was very different about the place. Gone are the bulletin boards with local postings, gone are the quirky but friendly employees, and gone is the comfortable, laid-back atmosphere. Instead you'll find an unwelcoming atmosphere, a stand-offish manager (who indeed does like to talk about customers once they leave), and cheap shortcuts. For instance, before, you got a pickle AND orange slices with your wrap. Now, you get to choose one. For heavens sake - it's a pickle. Not even a whole one! And a 1/4 of an orange. It's just so...cheap. Also, the desserts are AWFUL now. The old management sprung for delicious cakes from a local bakery. While the new manager raised the price on the cakes ($4+ per slice!), she also appears to be getting them from the nearby Wal-mart. They are AWFUL!!!! Don't bother - you will regret it! Pros: Wraps are still okay Cons: ""I don't want you here"" atmosphere, Cheap shortcuts more

use to be a great place 8/26/2009

I have been going to New World Coffee Shop for thirteen years. It became a habit. It was the only thing that stayed mostly consistent in my life since I've been in Raleigh. In the last few months they got another new owner. Then the employees stopped really talking to the customers. Then they started disappearing. The whole aura of the place has changed. Did I mention the owner? Watching her be completely rude to people. Talking about customers she didn't like in a very unquiet fashion. She literally makes people feel like she doesn't want them there. And I've even been told that she said to a few people ""you're not the type of clientele we are looking for"". I had an old friend e-mail me that she would never go back because her boyfriend over heard the owner say that they wish there were more attractive customers. She kicks people out at the end of the night, has shut the lights out on me a few times while I was there working without politely letting me know before hand... I lost track of time, so sorry. I have even been out there when she pointed out 4 of us saying that ""he only paid $1.50, she put down $2.... that doesn't pay the light bills so I have to close early"" Changing your hours randomly is bad for business. So, I am sad to say that I will probably not go back. I will miss it because that is how I have run into so many old friends. Cons: the owner more

The end of a great thing 8/9/2009

New ownership means change and this is certainly the case here. Since this establishment changed hands, quality has gone down and prices have gone up.this is not all, however. I enjoyed seeing the employees and regular customers alike there but I have not seen some of these familiar faces at all since the change of regime. Also, as I have witnessed on 2 separate occasions, it is now customary to insult regular customers. I mentioned a priceincrease earlier but on top of this, I never pay the same price for my caffinated beverage more than once in a row. I was going here daily but not anymore. I may return once this business is back in the hands of someone who realizes that 1- the customers keep you in business and you should treat them with respect and 2- a little personality in an atmosphere is a good thing (by the way the walls have been painted white and there is this awful ""art"" up now- these huge early 90s-looking things). Until then you will find me at a Starbucks. more

not the same 4/10/2009

i really used to love this place, but it's just not the same anymore because of the new management. it used to be a quirky, one-of-a-kind coffee shop but now it's... the opposite. the walls are stark white with ugly paintings on them. the little room in the back is closed off except for special groups or something, and there is hardly ever any music playing anymore. i don't go in to sit and relax with friends with a cup of coffee because i feel like my conversation is being listened to/dissected by the new owner, who, contrary to other reviews has not greeted me or anyone i was with ONCE while going in. the employees seem like they don't want to be there because their boss is breathing down their neck constantly and one of them doesn't even know what she's doing. if you're coming to this site for a true review i wouldn't put too much stock into some of these recent positive ones. i mean, one is from the owner and the other is from someone that works there. it's a shame really. more
