Delivery Fiasco! 12/17/2010

After waiting over an hour at home for our food delivery, I called the restaurant and was told our food was delivered to 'our daughter' ! This was a surprise since our daughter was not home! Seems not only our food was delivered miles to another house but our credit card receipt was signed by someone at the house! This action compromises the card. After calling the police and the credit card company, New Moon did not offer compensation for our trouble. I was asked 'Do you want your food"" --what and wait another hour to eat? This is very sad for we used to frequent this place---I guess one should dine in only! more

Consistently good food & fast service 10/21/2009

We eat here often. Just had a quick bite at New Moon last night. They seated us quickly, the order was taken promptly, and the food was out in 10 minutes! It was prepared as we requested, and was quite good. New Moon is consistent, No surprises. It's much better quality than your average Chinese restaurant... flavor profiles are interesting, food is fresh, seasoned well, no MSG, no overcooked vegetables. Although NM is not as unique as Yujean Kang's in Pasadena, overall, it's quite delicious. Pros: reliable, very good Chinese food Cons: n/a more

Great Chinese Restaurant!!! 12/14/2008

The New Moon in Montrose is pretty, with a really nice outside seating area and bar. The food is wonderful! Pros: Food, prices, parking more

Disappointing 12/10/2008

Decided to take my family there after hearing that it was a really nice restaurant. It was verry disappointing. First of all the service was horrible! The waiters and hosts aren't very friendly. In the middle of eating some bus boy comes up to our table and picks up one of our dishes, mumbles to himself, sets it back down then walks away!...And now for the food. The food was for the most part bland, very, very, very americanized! Chinese food isn't even my favorite kind of food, in fact its far from it, and I've had Chinese food ten times better than that! If you don't eat ethnic food very often you might like the food at New Moon but if you really want to eat authentic Chinese food I suggest you go to A&W (amazing Chinese food!). Even, as someone else suggested, Panda Express is better than New Moon! Pros: restaurant looks nice Cons: service, food more

HORRIBLE 6/14/2008

I would have given New Moon a 1 star rating, but i have to admit, at times the food is pretty damn good. However, The service is HORRIBLE! \r \r You're not greeted when you walk in. Usually the host/hostess is taking a person call or chit chatting with other employees. \r When you are seated, it usually takes 10 minutes for someone to come take drink orders\r If you ask for something different on the food you order (example: no onions, no mushrooms, chicken instead of shrimp) they NEVER get it right. Maybe 1 time out of the 15 times I've. Unfortunately, I'm forced to go there because there aren't any other decent quality food places around there. \r \r Pro: Foods alright. \r \r Recommendation: Flip a coin, call it in the air and if you get lucky go to New Moon. That's about the same odds that their service will be semi alright. Pros: Food is alright sometimes Cons: Service, Employees, Mangement, HORRIBLE more

worst service ever 5/31/2008

My boyfriend and I went there for dinner tonight, and found the service to be not only inadequate\r but just horrible. No one knew what they were doing. Management seemed to not even care. Food was mediocre, at best.\r A friend had recommended the place but we found out that the food and service revolting.\r \r Don't even bother. You're better off going to a panda express. Cons: worst service, bad food, and poor management more

Best Chinese food in Santa Clarita 1/1/2008

We dined at the New Moon Restaurant in Santa Clarita on New Years Eve and the experience was so positive I felt compelled to write a review - even though the restaurant in Santa Clarita is not listed yet. \r First of all, the place was very busy when we arrived at 8:30 PM. Despite arriving in the middle of the evening rush, we were seated promptly and were served fried wontons with plum sauce as an appetizer. Our waitress, Luan, was professional, friendly and despite being very busy, took the time to explain things thoroughly. Even our busboy Zach was a treat. Our water glasses were never empty and dishes were picked up right away. Luan and Zach were both charming and were a great team. They represented the restaurant very well.\r The dinner was unlike any Chinese food I had experienced. The ""Shelby's Chicken"" was a winner. It was served hot, fresh and the recipe was unique. We also sampled the ""Velvet Chicken"" and it was delightful. Portions were ample and we had to take some home with us. Great value. Even the fortune cookies given at the end of the dinner were unlike anything we had ever had at a Chinese restaurant - as they were dipped in chocolate!\r Overall, our experience at the New Moon was very, very positive and I expect that this restaurant will be around for a long time to come. I look forward to returning in the near future. Pros: Food, atmosphere, service, parking Cons: Still looking! more

Disappointing Service 11/1/2007

I took my 85 year old mom to lunch and was sorry that we choose New Moon. We were seated and waited to be served. Meanwhile, two men were seated at the table next to us and for some unknown reason the wait person decided to served them first...probably because they were men and looked like business types. There is nothing wrong with business types except that my mother and I felt slighted by the female wait person. She should have known better. Furthermore, I felt badly for my elderly mom who was so looking forward to a pleasant lunch that ended up unpleasant.. The owner or manger made a feeble attempt to talk to us-trying to be friendly- but by that time I was disgusted with the wait person, manager and restaurant as a whole. Never been back since. I make a concerted effort not to go there even though I live locally. Pros: parking Cons: poor service-some of the wait persons don't seem to understand seating order more

Best Chinese food on the west coast 10/26/2007

Since moving to the U.S from the U.K 5 years ago I have been on a personal quest to find good chinese food here on the west coast, my search stopped at the New Moon! Service is friendly and the food is the best chinese food in LA. The Shelby's chicken and the pork chow mein are two personal favorites, I also love the fact that you can order half portions, so no more do I deliberate over which of my favorites to choose, I can have both with some left over for luch tomorrow:-) My only complaint is that as I dont live downtown, I dont get a fix often enough, so move out toward Cerritos New Moon! Pros: Best Chinese food in the west Cons: It's downtown more

Americanized chinese food 8/10/2007

I'd say their chloe shrimp is really very good! Nice people and friendly staff. You can't go wrong. Waiting time during rush hour gets crazy though so call in advance. Pros: good food, not necessarily chinese food from china town Cons: wait time when busy more

Great Chinese, Great People, Great place 7/6/2007

I actually work at the New Moon in Downtown Los Angeles, and was sad to see the reviews of the Montrose location, as I also worked there for a little over a year. Not only is it the best company I have ever been employed by, but the food and service are exceptional. Unlike P.F Changs, New Moon is family runned and managed, and just because a restaurant serves a certain cusine does not mean its employees should be of that ethnicity. The restaurant is actually now expanding exponentially, and has been in buisness for over THIRTY years (for those who doubt it will be around long). P.F. Changs and ""Chors"" five dollar combo plate, are completely uncompairable to New Moon's extensive menu. If you thought New Moon couldn't get any better, the Montrose location recently opened a full bar and patio seating. The restaurant has become so popular that reservations on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, are acomplete MUST, even for two. I have actually witnessed customers lined up outside, and willing to wait over and hour for a table. This is the only downfall. Another great feature about the New Moon is that the owner is more often than not, on-site, and more than willing to help with any problems. I don't know too many people that can say they love where they work, and that they think their bosses are two of the most outstanding people out there. Go to New Moon in Montrose, or in Los Angeles at 112 w. 9th street @main and ask for Julie. Pros: Great food, Great service,Great owners, overall great ambience Cons: Reservations for weekend dinners a must more

i wish I had went somewhere else 6/26/2007

I had read a couple reviews and thought i would give it a try. About half way into my meal I had truly wished I had gone somewhere else. The mongolian beef was absolutely the worst I had ever had. It had no flavor and I found myself dumping it in soy sauce hoping to just finish it. It was too expensive to just throw away, i always get dessert and I thought that i could not go wrong with dessert. I was sadly mistaken. I got a fruit tart that the crust was warm and the middle cold. This restaurant left me confused and hungry. Only two things good about this resaurant! 1.)The service was exceptional, . 2.) they have a great chocolate dipped fortune cookie I can't see the place staying open that long! Save your money, if you are like me and want Mongolian beef or anything with a flavor just drive the extra miles to P.F. Changs, the price is the same and you will thank me!! Pros: service, parking, prompt seating, chocolate dipped fortune cookie Cons: food, floor plan, food, desserts, everything..never again more

Great choices, Great customer service, Delicious! 6/17/2007

The ambience is perfect for a weekend family meal. Customer service is triple A. We ordered the Shelby beef and chicken, and also the Kung Pao shrimp --- delicious! There was a comment which said ""Too pricey for Asian food!"" --- at $14 per entree? I know a Japanese restaurant where you have to have a budget of $75 per head - that is pricey! But then again, it is overlooking the city of LA. No, New Moon is not pricey at all. Pros: Great place, great food, great service Cons: I was the only Asian - the staff and the rest of the customers were all white more

thumbs up 3/19/2007

fantastic restaurant all around...concept, staff, service, menu. and cuisine. i have worked in the industry for over 6 years and service doesn't come like this much often. they seem to go the extra mile. food is delicious with lots of selections on the menu. this is the only restaurant where i have numerous menu items i order rather then the same 1 or 2 i usually get from other places. lots of comparison to pf changs but new moon ranks above. more

A new take on classic Chinese cuisine 2/21/2007

Why does a Chinese place have to be ""authentic"" to be good? Can an Italian restaurant be good if there are no real Italians eating there?\r \r If you are like me and your primary reason for going out to dinner is to eat a good meal rather than a sociological study of a culture, then try the New Moon. Each dish is delicious and a wonderful take on Chinese classics. Best yet, they know how to cook something tasty without a ton of grease - something I often find at ""authentic"" places. more

Best place in La Crescenta Valley 1/12/2007

I am a frequent New Moon customer, a gourmet chef myself. New Moon is the only place in Montrose where I can get good quality food in a nice ambience (other places in La Canada-La Crescenta even favourite with locals are mediocre at most). They serve a light West Coast version of Chinese cuisine. The dishes are well prepared with light and flavourful sauces. It is not a cheep starch-filled food. I would recommend their soups: winter melon, chicken, vegetable - all are great. Fish and shrimp is fresh and tastfully served with asparagus, spinach, etc. Noodle entrees are delicious. They also serve variety of tasty vegetarian entrees, never overdone. Their soups cost about $5 a cup or $10 a big bowl, entrees go from $10 to $15. The choice of wine and beer is good, hard liquor is not served. The dining room is large and usually full, however, the turn around is fast and the wait is usually short. If you live in the area, this would be a great dinner place, casual and stylish at the same time. Pros: Quality foods, good service, nice ambience more

ok 1/10/2007

It's a good place to go... don't take me wrong. I just said it's ok because i would always say chinatown is a weebit 10 miles more of a drive and you'll get the authentic version. when it's all white people eating in a chinese place, with all white people in the receptionist's area and bar, one may ask... where are the chinese people? the chloe shrimp is really good, but not that exactly slippery shrimp that i think it wants to be. Pros: location Cons: americanized chinese more
