Editorial review from Citysearch 1/18/2013

this place is the best! I've been going here for about 6 years now and it's still my favorite spot in SLC. it's not fancy, there is no DJ, or ridiculous light display and your rolls won't have animal shaped garnish. it's just really good sushi at great prices. you are likely to spend more on beer than you will on fish. it's rarely crowded, no wait, and the service is personable. the rolls offer great variety, the sunomono salad is excellent, and the sashimi pieces are generous. love this place! more

My Favorite Sushi 6/18/2011

I've been a regular there for the last couple of years since the new owners took over and haven't had a single poor experience. Food is always fresh and affordable. Love the place. more

Stand-Out Sushi in a Flood of Sushi Restaurants! 12/3/2010

Contrary to what history has taught us, we decided to try a new sushi place - Nagoya - because we were already next door to it and starving. What a huge pleasant surprise this was! First, we were seated almost immediately, and the atmosphere was nice. The service, from hostess to waitress to bus staff, was flawless. We ordered a few specialty rolls, including some that I am still dreaming about! Namely, do not miss their Sweet Honey roll (strawberries! wow!). There were a few other rolls that were remarkable and very unique. We loved everything we ordered, and we cannot wait to go back here! more

Not the best in Utah; spectacular dessert rolls 9/5/2009

Sandy is lousy with sushi right now. Fort Union has no less than half-a-dozen spots. Playing catch-up right now to get up to speed with what's what. As a result, I'm still trying to find the rolls I like here -- I tend to like complicated sweet, salty, really-let-it-roll-around-your-tongue kind of rolls -- so I can't really recommend anything much of the standard stuff yet. However, I was _utterly_ blown away by the Sweet Honey roll mentioned by everyone else here. Strawberry, avocado, cream cheese, eschaton... and something else. Wrapped in a light pink sushi with some kind of honey-soaked rice. Wow, just wow. A perfect creation. To be fair, our table was a bit split on the dessert roll. I think it'll prevail in the long term, though. Pros: rolls with fruit, the specials Cons: a waitress wouldn't couldn't understand us, but no big deal more

Best sushi in Salt Lake, and I've been everywhere 8/16/2009

I've been going to Nagoya for years now and it never disappoints. They are under new management and it's only made this place better! The new owner kept all the rolls from the previous owner exactly as he used to prepare them, but he also added some new rolls that are outstanding. You will not be disappointed! They have a huge variety of rolls here, and they are all delicious, but if you're looking for the best I would recommend the Venus, Geisha, and Sweet Honey. Enjoy!! Pros: taste, quality, service, management more

Best Sushi Spot in Utah 8/15/2009

This is by far my favorite sushi restaurant. And I have eaten at nearly every sushi place in Salt Lake. They have an amazing sushi chef and with new management they have expanded their rolls. I never leave dissatisfied. They also have wonderful appetizers and desserts and you can find something for everyone. Its a nice quiet spot not too crowded so you don't have to wait like you do at most sushi places. I absolutely love Nagoya Sushi! It is excellent sushi with the most friendly service and the least hassle. Everyone should try it! My favorite roll is the Venus:) Pros: variety of rolls, great service, everything is delicious! more

Best Kept Sushi Secret! 8/4/2009

This place is wonderful!! My friends and I go here quite often. Parking is a breeze, the service is always phenomenal, and the prices are quite reasonable for the portions. We've never had to wait for a table since it's not an overly crowded spot. They offer a good variety of sushi so chances are there's something for everyone. There isn't a roll that I have had that I didn't like! Pros: Excellent service, great food, reasonably priced more

Love it, Love it! 8/4/2009

My wife and I love Sushi. Nagoya was a great place for my wife to try it for the first time. She fell in love with it. This place satisfies all our sushi cravings. Pros: Great place to try Sushi for the first time. Cons: 40 miles from my house more

Best ""undiscovered"" sushi In Utah 4/25/2008

I'm pretty picky about my sushi. I've been to dozens of restaurants around SLC, UT and many more around the world. I have to say that I love Nagoya sushi! It's the best undiscovered sushi place. The sushi rolls are always fresh, presented beautifully, and taste heavenly. They're appetizers are superb also. Tonight we had tempura fried bananas for dessert and I must say it was a delicious dessert. The place itself is unpretentious. Don't expect to find glamorous interior. It is a small, family run place. But what they lack in decorations they more than make up in the taste of sushi rolls and other dishes. You'll almost never have to wait for a table there which is a big plus for me and the service is prompt. The bottom line is, if you like great sushi and don't like to wait this is the place for you! I'm really glad we discovered this place because we got tired of having ""an hour"" wait at Happy Sumo at the Gateway every time we went there. And as much as I love Happy Sumo, I must say that Nagoya surpasses them in taste of sushi. This is our regular place now! Go try it! Pros: Great sushi and appetizers, fast service, no wait Cons: hidden location more

Best Sushi in Utah I've had so far 2/26/2008

I'm a really nit-picky about my japanese food and sushi, since I am from california where there is always fresh fish and I have tried sushi in japan. This place serves their food with a quality and standard that you will see before you even eat it. The sushi is warm and delicious, and their service is prompt. They also have a sweet deal of 3-4 rolls (mix and match) for $30. If you bought the rolls separately it would be around $50!!! This offer is unbeatable and perfect for a date. If I recommended a restaurant in Utah, it would be this one. more

best sushi in salt lake 2/21/2008

This place is hidden from the street a little so not too many people know about it but it's fantastic! My wife and I eat here as often as we can. We've eaten at nearly every sushi place in Salt Lake City, and this is hands down the best sushi place in Utah. Our favorite rolls are the Venus, Geisha, Grand Canyon. The Sweet Honey is very unique and delicious if you want to try flavors you've never had before (strawberries are an ingredient). I consider myself somewhat of a sushi connoisseur, and this place is full of flavor. Some sushi places will be missing the bursts of flavor in their rolls, but this place never disappoints. Check this place out, it is yummy. Eat the sushi slowly and enjoy the combination of flavors. The restaurant was recently bought by a new chef and he's has kept all the same rolls the previous owner made (awesome!) but also added some new rolls that are incredible (yes!). The Sweet Honey and Grand Canyon are new additions to the menu. Pros: food taste, quality fish, variety, service more

excellent sushi! 12/8/2007

My partner and I discovered this place while exploring about a month ago. It's in this giant strip mall. The sushi is fabulous!!!! The first time we went, I got a bento box with sushi and sashimi, and he got a bento box with chicken teriyaki and gyoza. The miso was excellent, and the salads had a great carrot ginger dressing. My sushi and sashimi were truly excellent, very fresh, presented nicely, and generous.....I think I got three or four pieces of each, six to eight total. My partner said the chicken teriyaki was excellent, quality chicken instead of the remnants a lot of places use. I felt our tab, about $30, was totally reasonable, considering how far from fresh fish we are out here. Only a little more than we would've paid in seattle. The service was great, but for some reason the place was almost empty. I found that odd considering how good we thought it was.\r The second time we got take out. He got chicken teriyaki (again...not a sushi lover), and I got tuna sashimi and a tiger roll. Way too much! The menu said the sashimi was five pieces, but I swear there were eight, large too. And the roll was enormous! The teriyaki was very generous too. This time it was probably about $45 or so (including tip), which, again, for sushi this far away from the coast, is pretty reasonable in my opinion. I saw that other people thought it was too expensive, but maybe we're just used to higher costs b/c everything out here seems reasonable or even cheap to us....except gas, alas. Pros: awesome sushi Cons: closed sundays.... :( more

A good place for sushi but!!!! 10/21/2006

When I first started going here a couple years ago when they first opened it was really a bargain. All you can eat for 25.95. I have to admit there sushi is awesome and just about the best in the area. About a year ago they upped there fees and reduced there quantity. You get a choice now of combination 1 2 or 3. The price went up to 26.95 for a short time maybe about 6 months then it went up again to 29.95. If your a frequent sushi lover like me these price increases have made going fewer and farther between visits. Because of the fact you get less for your money. It is owned by Koreans who seem to be more interested making more money at the expense of creating a place people love to go. Pros: Good quality sushi Cons: price is getting obtrusive more

Good Sushi 2/6/2006

We are regulars to this restaurant. Their rolls are a bit overpriced if you by them seperatly, but they have great specials. 4 rolls for $26. Who gets one roll anyway! Service is great and usually not too many people there so its not noisy. They have excellent beef teriyaki! You can share a box with 2 people. Overall its a good experience. Pros: Not Busy Cons: Price Per Roll more

Where's Japan? 1/22/2006

Teriyaki sauce told the entire story. I ordered a beef teriyaki which had strange odor to it. I had no idea whether It was the beef or teriyaki sauce, which was too thick, not authentic at all. There desserts were limited(green tea ice cream). However, service was excellent, very prompt. stay away from pizza roll. Don't ask for manager because they have one. Pros: inexpensive, large portion, service Cons: Awful food, Traditional decor more

Stripmall surprise 8/15/2004

We've been to a lot of sushi restaurants in and out of the Salt Lake Valley. Surprisingly, Nagoya is one of our best finds in recent months. Tucked away in an unassuming stripmall, most people just drive by, which is both good and bad. Good because the restaurant was empty, meaning we got excellent service. Bad because it probably doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Even if you're not in the area, it's worth the trip. Fresh food, attentive servers, and complimentary miso (or maybe that was just for us) - beats many of the other [possibly overrated] sushi restaurants around here. One last note... give the Utah roll a try. Pros: Service, Quality, Easy parking Cons: , Location more

Nagoya- Great Sushi 3/31/2004

I went with a group of about 8 people for the all-you-can-gorge sushi lunch. It's a little pricey ($26) but well worth the money. Nagoya has so many inventive rolls and all were very fresh. I would especially recommend the Utah roll and the Tiger roll. Be careful how much you order on the a.y.c.e. option, or else you'll be stuck paying for uneaten food. In addition to all-you-can-eat sushi, the rest of the menu is open. The teriyaki beef is delicious! The service was friendly and prompt, once the waitress got to our table the first time. Pros: Good food, Fresh fish, Menu more
