Beautiful 8/5/2010

Muriel's is my favorite place for a romantic dinner. The building is beautiful and fantastic. The staff is exceptionally wonderful. I constantly reccomend Muriel's and everyone has come back to me with fabulous reviews. Actually, in my 8 years as a concierge I've never ever received negative feedback from guests. I've been so many times that I've tried just about everything on the menu and not once have I disliked a thing. It's great. more

Poor Management, Bad Taste 2/17/2010

After being hit with a blizzard, all flights were grounded making it physically impossible to travel to New Orleans. Every other restaurant refunded our deposit and fully understood the circumstances (i.e. Physical impossibility). However, Muriel's refused any possible refunded and would not accept our reasoning even though it seemed common knowledge that the northeast got crushed with snow. The restaurants that were wise to refund were MILA, Acme and Marriot. I will happily refer others to them for their courtesy. Muriels, horrible decision on their part. Especially because word of mouth for 20 people equates to a very big number in the long run. more

Inconsistent...Disappointing! 1/2/2010

My wife and I took our daughters for their first visit to one of my favorite cities: New Orleans. In hindsight, we should have stuck with a tried-and-true New Orleans landmark restaurant, but thought we would go somewhere different, and conveniently located in the Quarter. For the price, Muriel?s turned out to be a mistake. Our server was clueless, the food was inconsistent and the whole experience was disappointing. In both the appetizer and entre service, half the dishes were served hot and fresh off the skillet while the other half were cold from sitting around. The red fish was stale and rubbery. The barbecued shrimp, while tasty, was only tepid. The whole meal service was inconsistent in quality and timing. The one positive note was that their signature pork chop dish was served hot and was very good. A couple of weird service issues included not receiving our bottle of wine until we were almost finished with our entr?es. Our server never asked if we wanted coffee with our dessert. And the most aggravating was when I sent back my cold red fish dish after having taken one bite; they returned the same rubbery little piece of fish on a re-warmed plate! Quite disgusting. For the same money ? nearly $50 per person ? you could get terrific service and consistent food at any of New Orleans? exquisite and legendary establishments. Pros: Great location. Interesting menu. Cons: Poor service. Inconsistent food quality. Pricy. more

Go someplace else for a good steak 5/4/2009

What can I say? This was the worst $30 steak I ever had. Mostly my fault, I should have read the menu a little closer. There are only two steak choices and I was in the mood for steak. I chose the ribeye, bad choice. It came smothered in some kind of dark brown, mushroom gravy. Carnivore that I am, I really enjoy a good steak. I think a good steak stands on it on, without the addition of any sauce, gravy, etc. This slop totally overpowered the natural flavor of the steak. It was really bad. It did serve one purpose however. I am not a great ribeye fan because the cut generally has more fat on it than I like. But my choices were limited here (only two), so I went with it. The steak seemed excessively fatty, even for a ribeye. I wonder now if the sauce/gravy was a convinent way to hide a lesser quality cut of meat. My wife went with one of the table d' hote offerings, the barbequed shrimp. She pronounced it acceptable, but not great. The service left me unimpressed too. If I had to use a single word, I think I would describe it as unconcerned. Not that any of the staff was unfriendly, they just seemed to be going through the motions, trying to get through the night. This is not an inexpensive restaurant. I expected better. Considering the myriad of dining choices in the French Quarter, you can easily find better food and service. We were very disappointed. Pros: Not much to distinguise it from other French Quarter eats Cons: Lackadaisical service more

Uneven but what was good was very good... 3/30/2009

A few of us in town for a conference tried out Muriels for dinner last night.. the setting was beautiful, the ambiance warm and welcoming, the service ok (waiter greeted us asking for our choices when we hadn't even gotten menus yet!) and later forgot the sugar for someone's iced tea... the food was good and not so good - my goat cheese & baby crawfish was fabulous as were my companions beet salad apps, but my entree of fish/seafood in au gratin was lumpy, thick, and altogether too goppy... my companions dishes were much better -- spicy broiled shrimp on dirty rice, or the double pork chop with greens and rice... dessert was fine -- nothing to really rave about.. (choice of crfeme brulee or bread pudding) and the Italian pino grigio was fresh and light.. I'd try other items NOT on the price fixe to see how they are... more

Do NOT miss this place!! 3/30/2009

My boyfriend and I ate at Muriel's on a recent visit to New Orleans. We LOVED it! Ask to be served by Tucker - he was a great waiter - friendly, efficient and dead-on in his menu suggestions! We had a number of dishes, but the crawfish crepes were so damn good! We are adding this as a 'must do' for our next visit to New Orleans. Pros: Waitstaff, Food more

Ok 5/21/2008

This restaurant was hyped up way too much. The location is nice and the place is pretty, but the food is nothing to applaud. The appetizers and desserts far outranked the main courses. I found the dishes poorly presented and chunky rather than delicate. St least the portions are substantial. I suppose it used to be fantastic but went downhill after being so popular. Pros: Substantial portions Cons: Way too expensive for what you get and very impersonal more

Absolute favorite place to dine in NOLA 11/26/2007

Great food, great location, fantastic service - if you have something special to celebrate, make sure that you go to this restaurant! Pros: Fantastic service - best in the Quarter more

Muriel's is FANTASTIC!!!! 2/16/2007

Muriel's is argueably one of the BEST kept secrets in this town - the service, atmosphere and staff were incredible and the cuisine...utterly FANTASTIC!! I am the owner of The Lemp Mansion Restaurant and Inn in St. Louis, Missouri, have been in the restaurant business for over 30 years and let me tell you, you won't find a BETTER dining experience in this town!!! I think it is safe to say that Muriel's as well as other fine restaurants in New Orleans are ""back in stride"" after Hurricane Katrina. I had the Duck Confit appetizer (MARVELOUS!), the Veal Oscar (INCREDIBLE!) and for dessert, the STRAWBERRY COBBLER (UNBELIEVABLE!). KUDOS to Chef Guy Sockrider, as he is TRULY one of the BEST chefs present in New Orleans at this time, a special ""thanks"" to Jerry, our waiter who was as PLEASANT, PROFESSIONAL and INFORMATIVE as ANY waiter I have ever come across in my travels. Muriel's has made my 2nd wedding anniversary celebration a UNFORGETTABLE experience, as you have my family as customers for LIFE!!! We will always dine at Muriel's EVERY time we are in New Orleans, and will be informing other diners from our own restaurant here in St. Louis, that if you are traveling to ""N'awlins"", Muriel's at Jackson Square is a MUST dining experience to be ENJOYED!!! BRAVO!!!! Pros: Ambience, Service, Food Cons: NONE, I repeat..... NONE. more

Service and Quality Outstanding 6/2/2006

I've been to Muriels at least 3 times since it reopened after Katrina. It has not failed to impress me. The service and quality of food is outstanding and consistent. Many New Orleans restaurants have slower than norm service (I am a Louisiana native and my family is from NOLA). Muriel's service is excellent. I'm a repeat customer and will continue to be unless it changes. Pros: menu, ambience more

Romantic evening out 10/21/2005

We went in to sight see and stayed for dessert. The bar is amazing. Turtle soup, vanilla bean creme brulee and long island ice teas, my kind of place. Extensive wine list, upscale gourmet food, friendly service, and an all around great restaurant. Don't go there unless your ready to spend some money. It a great place for a romantic dinner for two. I give it a ten Pros: wine, food, scenery more

User review by erikaandmatt 6/12/2005

My husband and I went to Muriel's on an anniversary trip to New Orleans. Both of us enjoyed our meals - he had the eggplant and red pepper salad, the crabcake appetizer (we shared) and the grilled shrimp; I had the prix fixe with the pecan-crusted puppy drum as my entree (which was incredibly rich but delicious). The staff went out of their way to disreetly wish us a happy anniversary, including writing ""Happy Anniversary"" on my dessert plate and having other staff wish us one on the way out. The prix fixe was quite reasonable considering what we received. They also have a nice selection of half bottles, which I appreciated because my husband doesn't drink. Pros: delicious food, 1/2 bottles available more

Enjoyed a meal at Muriel's for our anniversary. Our hotel concerige notified the restaurant that we were there for that occasion and they gave us a semi-private table and two glasses of complimentary champagne. Ambiance was good but people who disregarded the upscale nature of the place - people in cargo shorts and flip flops, as well as the party next to us having an obnoxiously loud coversation about a very inappropriate topic - detracted, but we couldn't blame the restaurant for that. We found the prix fixe menu to be a great value, as we both received a three course meal as well as a decent bottle of wine for $111 all told (including tip). Pros: Value, Great Food, Location Cons: Clientele more

love love love this place 3/6/2005

We go there every time we are in New Orleans (which is quite a bit). The food is absolutely fantastic and the service is always perfect. Sunday brunch is definately the time to go. It is consistently fabulous. Pros: food, location, service Cons: parking more

fun & fantastic food 12/15/2004

You simply must make Muriel's a stop while visiting New Orleans! We had a wonderful meal and also dropped in on a rainy afternoon to enjoy their courtyard bar. There is a waiter there named Jerry Billiot who makes your visit memorable, he's so full of life you must request him if you're so lucky to be dining on a day that he works, Thanks Jerry for the tour and for the laughter! more

Expected More than we got 9/12/2004

We tried some of the more ""upscale"" restaurants while visiting NOLA, but I was truly disappointed with this one in, not at much as Emril's, but disappointed none the less. The food was great I'm sure for some people, but I found it not in the least as good as K-Paul's. It just didn't suit my taste, the service was EXCELLENT though and we loved the ambiance of the restaurant. Maybe if I had ordered something different, but the menu wasn't all that extensive and I thought I would love what I ordered, but I didn't, my boyfriend liked his food, but again, we could have skipped this place and went to K-Paul's twice even though it would have been a little more expensive than Muriel's. Worth trying, but I won't be going back. Pros: Service was excellent, located on Jackson Sq Cons: , Food wasn't as expect more

All-time Favorite Restaurant 3/18/2004

What can I say about this restaurant which has become a second home to us? Exceptional food, attentive staff, ambiance galore, right in the heart of the French Quarter. Great for tourists and locals alike. Try the shrimp over fried green tomatos, the turtle soup, the duck confit salad, the scallops (appetizer or entree), tournedos, lamb, pork chops, tuna, goat cheese crepes. You can't go wrong! And top it all off with the city's best creme brulee! Yum! The friendly staff is very helpful in making suggestions and helping to make your experience a favorable one. We recommend this restaurant to all of our bed & breakfast guests and tell them if they only have one meal in the city, this is the place to have it. We recommend dinner over lunch. And if you have a large party, be sure to ask about the magnificent private dining rooms upstairs. Pros: Exceptional Food, Great Staff, Beautiful Atmosphere Cons: , A, Thing more

Excellent food in great atmosphere 11/25/2003

I've had consistently excellent food the 4 or so times I've been in town and have dined at Muriels. It has become a must when I come to town. The scallops in cardinal sauce (on the dinner menu) was one of the best meals of my life. Also try the sampler platter. And the atmosphere! Great bar and beautifully restored rooms in an old Creole townhouse. Visit upstairs for a second bar and more private areas. Pros: Atmosphere, Incredible food, Sampler platter more
