I love these ladies 11/3/2011

I love these ladies. I first went to Moshi Moshi on a recommendation from a friend about 3 years ago. I picked Juliana at random and she didn't let me down. I had had my hair cut by 2 people my entire life, my mother and our small town beautician, so I had my reservations. Everyone I interacted with in the shop was, and is, very friendly. Juliana cut quite a bit off my hair (I've always kept it pretty long and when I went to see her I'd just finished a summer of lifeguarding and my hair was super dry and gross) and gave me more layers than I'd ever had previously. I didn't give her much guidance just told her I needed to get the dead out and she'd say, ""I'll cut like this much off?"" or ""I'll add some layers?"" and run it by me and I'd just nod and let her go. The last time I went to her she went quite short which I was a little uncomfortable with but I think it was mainly because she'd cut my bangs so shot. And again, I'd gotten into the habit of not giving her many instructions but just letting her cut. But, now that I've said all that, Juliana is no longer at the shop. I now see Karen and I think she does a fantastic job. She's better at giving and actual trim than Juliana was but still will ask about things she'd like to do. I've never gone in with a set of rigid instructions so I can't speak on their ability to replicate a photograph but I can walk in and say, ""I need you to shape up my hair"" and walk out with a cut I'm happy with. I have close friends who go here and love it. They too, by coincidence, see Karen. There are 6 or 7 ladies that cut hair at this shop and an esthetician. While as far as I can tell, they're all friendly, I can't speak to their hair-cutting abilities. Though I will say that when I've been in the shop I've never seen anything I'd be upset walking away with. I also want to caution you to some of these one star reviews on here. Several of them had a bad experience with a particular stylist. Since there are at least 5 others, and you can choose who you book with, I don't think that should be a deterrent from the place as a whole. One reviewer was upset that her appointment wasn't kept when she was >15 mins late. I don't know about before but at this time when booking an appointment you are told that if you are 15 mins late they may not be able to accommodate you. Which is understandable as they have other appointments to keep. Your appointment was from 7:30 - 8:00, it will take 30 mins. Brining you in for a 30 min appointment at 7:45 or later will either cut into another appointment or the stylists time to go home. No matter the excuse for being late, it is in no way unreasonable for a business to drop your appointment because of it. I'd also draw attention to the date on some of these reviews. Moshi Moshi now has a website and offers easy online booking, very handy. I think the price is reasonable ($35 for a wash, cut, and style with free bang trims between cuts--it's worth noting that the price is different for each stylist, presumably based on her years of experience) and I have only ever seen these ladies be chatty and friendly, never gossipy or rude. Also, these girls stay busy so you'll probably need to book at least a week or 2 in advance. Other pluses include they are open late (until 8) a couple days a week and are open on Saturdays. more

Crappy color and Ugly Gossip 3/16/2011

I saw Catlin sometime ago for cut and color. The color was not good, and I was extremely unhappy with it. I went to someone else to have it fixed afterward. In addition, she is a gossip. Friends who also went to her (they did not like their hair either) told me that she was gossiping to them about things that I had told her while having my hair done. She did a poor job and the gossiping is extremely unprofessional. more

awfullllll! 12/5/2010

I have gone here since 2008, I normally see either Juiliana or Karen, but recently I went to Jess. Jess royally screwed up my hair, not only did I ask for trim and lost about 3 inches off my length but I was also given these awful short layers that I could do nothing about. I went back 3 months later (last week) and was recommended to see their new stylist Jaime from New York, she sounded like she had experience, but boy was I wrong. I walked in asking for about an inch trim but I walked out with a haircut even worse than the one before. My length was uneven, my hair was now 3 inches shorter yet again and I had awful, awful layers that were about 3 inches long... I cried it looked so bad. The workers are friendly but if you'd like a nice hair cut, especially just a trim- go elsewhere. more

I loved everything about my haircut. 11/23/2010

This is such a cute place! It always made me smile as I walked by their window display, so I finally decided to check it out. I set up my appointment online-- I enjoy it when I can avoid unnecessary human interaction-- and I chose Jess because her rate was a little lower. I didn't have an idea going in and I just asked her to make it look good, and that she did! I've never got so many compliments on my hair. I'll definitely be back. more

WORST HAIRCUT OF MY LIFE@ 5/10/2010

I recently went to Moshi Moshi in hope for a great highlight for summer. However, i left with a choppy mullet with trailor trash highlights! My hairstylist was named Jess (Jessica) and she was new. DON`T GO TO JESSICA, SHE IN TERRIABLE! I cry everyday when i get ready because i cant do anything with mny mullet of a haircut. The worst part is, is i didnt even want my haircut. She told me that she wanted to clean up my layers in the back...and now i cant even get my hair in a ponytail! My confidence is so low beacuse of this. Jessica should lose her License for this one! I would recommend the garden salon off of Erwin Rd. By all means PLEASE PLEASE do not go here! more

Great salon 2/25/2010

Julianna is a great stylist. Womans hair cut (including bangs) was 30 bucks..great price, great quality cut. Cool, funky little salon. Parking can be an issue as it is mostly on the street but it is located right on W. Franklin so it is easy access from most places. Hightly recommend this salon and Julianna Pros: Cool, unique atmosphere, great prices Cons: Parking more

CUTE! 2/1/2010

I walked into the salon not knowing what I wanted and I walked out with an awesome haircut! I had a great experience from start to finish. My stylist, Jess, was friendly and had some mad hair skills. I was impressed with my cut and I've received tons of compliments since my visit. I've never been a repeat customer to a salon before, but I will definitely go back to Moshi Moshi. Pros: awesome staff, quirky/cute salon decor Cons: Franklin St parking more

Great place to get a haircut! 11/6/2009

I got a haircut by Mary at Moshi Moshi. She listened to what I wanted and gave me some great suggestions and she did a fantastic job! I highly recommend Moshi Moshi (and Mary)! I've shopped around a bit in Chapel Hill for a salon and hadn't found anywhere that I liked until Moshi Moshi. Prices are pretty reasonable, especially considering the location and the amount of time they spend with you. Pros: Excellent Haircut, Nice and Attentive Staff more

wonderful haircut 8/31/2009

I had a WONDERFUL haircut with Juliana! She truly took my thick unruly hair and turned it into something totally unexpected. I would recommend Juliana and moshi moshi to anyone! Pros: great atmosphere, nice stylists Cons: price more

Best Service, GREAT employees, wonderful atmosphere! 3/11/2009

This is the best hair salon I have ever been in! I was greeted promptly by a smiling face, and was seen promptly. My hairstylist(Catlin) was funny and intuitive, and helped guide me to the perfect cut! She was very professional and gave great advice. Definitely, Moshi Moshi is a place to recommend to your friends, and Catlin was amazing! I would trust ANYONE here to cut my or my friends hair. Pros: Amazing service, great personalities Cons: If you like Supercuts, you won't like this place! more

VERY disappointing 2/10/2009

After reading the (mostly) good reviews on Moshi Moshi, I was excited to get my hair cut with Catlin. However, I was soon disappointed. Not only did she completely ignore me while she cut and colored my hair - stopping to chit chat with other stylists and answering the phone twice - my hair cut and color were BAD, just awful. She refused to listen to my concerns and suggested that I let her have another go at it. I decided to go somewhere else to get it re-done. I should've known I was in for trouble when I saw Catlin's dry and brittle hair. I don't see how this place stays in business.\r \r PS - I wish someone would suggest Catlin invest in some deodorant. She smelled like she came right from the gym. Pros: Easy to find location Cons: Catlin is rude and lacks talent. more

Fantastic haircut! 9/14/2008

I discovered Moshi Moshi by asking a total stranger with a really nice haircut who cut her hair! I had been looking for a good stylist and have not been disappointed with Catlin. She is professional, does not keep me waiting for my appointments, and does a fantastic job with my hair. I love the online booking option and the atmosphere of the salon. I have referred several of my friends here and they are pleased with the cuts and color they have gotten. more

The only salon I will go to 9/4/2008

I have lived in Chapel Hill for many years and been a patron of Moshi Moshi for almost as long. When I moved here I did some searching and the only salon to fit was Moshi Moshi. The employees are amazingly nice and work wonders for you. I have never been disappointed. Moshi Moshi is a unique feel and decor. They aren't a chain and only employ a limited number of stylists. If your looking for the kind of place where everyone is the same and no one stands out, this isn't your place. Every stylist has a unique sense of style. It didn't take long for them to figure out which stylist was best for me. I have long wished for a place like Moshi Moshi and dread ever having to relocate, I may never find a better place. If you want a professional stylist that is a real person, this is your place. Pros: Great style and knowlage, amazing staff Cons: none if you don't want cookie cutter employees and a huge support staff. more

Worst Customer Service ever 9/4/2008

I made an appointment three weeks in advance for Moshi Moshi. It was going to be a first appointment. I had an important event I was attending so I sheduled in advance. Two days before my appointment they called to cancel saying the stylist had a family emergency. I called back expecting to be squeezed in with someone else who was covering for the stylist. They offered me a Friday appointment which I could not do because of work. I let her know I had an important event. She said they could squeeze me in with a trainee to do my color but they could not do my cut. I told her this wouldn't work for me. Out of nowhere she says ""well I am sorry you can't understand the stylist father is dying that you were sheduled with."" I had no idea what the emergency was and she dropped that snide comment on me. THen she hung up on me. I called her back and told her that I thought she was being very unprofessional. A proper salon would offer coverage for the poor girl who is out. Besides for all I knew she was out with a sick child and she tries to lay the guilt trip on me about the girl's dad dying and then hangs up on me. I asked to speak to a manager when I called back and the girl who hung up on me said she was the manager. SCARY. I had no idea about the stylist who was out and what her problem was. Her co-workers could have handled this situation in a more professional manner. So, I was turned off this salon before I ever got to try it. RUDE STAFF. Will cancel on you at the last minute. more

Really cute salon 8/19/2008

This is a really cute salon in downtown Chapel Hill. I got a great haircut and felt comfortable with my stylist. I especially loved that they have online booking which made it so easy to make my appointment with my busy schedule. Pros: Online booking! more

I love Moshi Moshi 7/30/2008

I am new to Chapel Hill, NC and was looking for a great place for a haircut - Moshi Moshi did not disappoint me. Julie was great with my long, thick, curly, coarse hair (and not many people are). I went from long (mid back) to shoulder length and she was able to remove the weight and frame my face really well. She listened to what I wanted and did just that, she also gave me several recommendations and sent me home with a few product samples. The atmosphere is cute - its a small shop (with a little area of jewelry, perfumes, styling products and purses), trendy but not so much as to make you feel uncomfortable. Overall I was really happy with my visit to Moshi Moshi and I will definitely return. more

Best Waxing Ever 7/28/2008

Rhonda is the best esthetician I've ever met. Funny, gentle, and just plain nice - I would recommend her over and over again. She calmed me down for my first ever visit to ""the chair"" and t'weren't nothing. \r \r AMAZING. I can't wait to get my hair done here ! Pros: great atmosphere, friendly and fun employees Cons: parking does kinda stink downtown more

best salon around! 7/17/2008

I have been going to some of the women at Moshi Moshi for haircuts since before they were at Moshi Moshi. Because of the care that the stylists I have used at Moshi Moshi put into my hair, I have no doubt that all of the other stylists use just as much care with their clients. The atmosphere in the salon is upbeat, there is never any pressure, and when you ask about potential hair styles you get honest answers. I have never had a bad haircut. If you want to be able to just walk into a salon and have the stylist copy a haircut out of a magazine, then this place is not for you....and that's a great thing, because most likely that haircut in the magazine isn't going to work with your hair anyway! If you want stylists who take the time to listen to what you are looking for, what you like and don't like, and give their opinions on what will work for you and your hair...as well as do it with no pressure at all...then this is exactly the place for you! more

Finally, a stylist who listens with talent in spades 6/2/2008

My boss recently had a facial from Moshi Moshi and she looked absolutely radiant for days after. I have had my hair cut and colored since it opened, but I am now tempted to visit the new esthetician on staff. I have never regretted a single cut/color. From my own experience and based on a decent amount of eavesdopping while in the chair, I have always found everyone there to be welcoming, attentive, honest and creative. One last thing, I love the selection of hard-to-find-but-worth-it products. more

Good experience 5/27/2008

I have been several times for a hair cut with Mary - she is very good - I would highly recommend her! My only problem with the salon is that they really hurry you through your appointment - Mary only seemed to have 15-20 minutes alloted to cut my hair before her next appointment and she didn't have time to straighten it. I really don't fault her - I got the sense it was more of a salon policy....I'm used to a bit more TLC/time from my stylist. All that aside- great place, great people. more
