Millwood Hospital

There may be people here that care, but it isn't everyone. Techs and nurses are not always present, leaving kids alone. None of these kids are in a great place and some of them will lash out at others, especially when not supervised. They do not communicate with the parents/guardians about anything that goes on in here, and will make make decisions about medication asking for permission after the changes has been made. They make no effort to separate people who are having issues, opting to leave people who are dealing with major emotional issues in a hostile environment, which seems like the opposite of what you would want when trying to help people overcome trauma. Don't take your children and loved ones here, there are better options in the area, even if this is a referral. For everyone you see who cares there is so many more who don't and who will try to keep your loved one trapped here. They don't even deserve that one star, they are just despicable. more

My husband went there to detox off of pain meds. The next day he tried to transfer to another facility and they wouldn't let him. He said they had him so drugged up all he wanted to do was sleep. He never got my messages when I called and when he was able to use the phone (there is only 1 phone the patients can use) he had a 10 minute limit. Visitation is Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday for 1 hour and its like visiting someone in jail. Having very little contact with him was very hard for the both of us. The detox patients aren't allowed to go to the vending machines but the psychiatric patients are makes no sense. My husband actually said he would rather be in jail he had more rights. They tell you when to eat, sleep, go to class which my husband refused, no cell phone, wallet, shoe strings, belt, took his razor if you want to shave they watch you, have to use their shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, etc and there is absolutely nothing to do besides playing volleyball. This place is for people who are seriously mentally ill not for people who are trying to get clean from drugs, alcohol, etc.. My husband will never go back there he would have never went in the first place if we knew it was like that. more

I was admitted to Millwood as a 14 year old against my will in 1985 and stayed there for three months before being discharged. The abuses I witnessed while hospitalized there have stayed with me and the passage of time has done nothing to dull their impact on my life. I am certain that the management of this facility has turned over many times since my stay there, and I can't comment on the hospital's current management. I would, however, caution anyone considering a facility of this type for their adolescent child to investigate it fully and understand exactly what kind of treatment their child will be receiving, especially when it comes to the areas of physical restraint, the scope of threats that staff can make to patients and the protections that are in place to prevent sexual abuse. A mental hospital stay can easily take a small problem related to adolescence and turn it into a lifelong problem associated with recovering from trauma and abuse. Protect the ones you love and don't turn over their care to others lightly. My parents believed everything that my psychiatrist told them, which in retrospect is a decision I am certain that they regret. more
