Wonderful Experience 11/5/2003

Just the other day, I had one of the best restaurant experiences! I began with the ""mushroom package"" ... absolutely THE best appetizer. For my meal (although an appetizer) I had the Hamachi Kama (cooked yellow tail) which just melted in my mouth. Then the sushi!!!! Sweet Shrimp, Sea Urchin (Uni) was so fresh!!!, Salmon, Squid, and Albacore Tuna was perfect! I also had a Cruncy Kazi roll which had great texture. If you want great food, good atmosphere, and extremely friendly service, Mikado is a MUST GO! You will love it. Pros: Good Food, Great Food, Excellent Food more

Totally Amazed 10/9/2003

Oh my God! Where do they find all the wonderful personnel who work in this joint!? The wait staff is amazing (and attractive!) and the sushimen are THE friendliest! From excellent food, to terriffic service, to the best in quality, Mikado completely exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend it! Pros: Delicious, SO Friendly, Amazing more

TOP NOTCH QUALITY 10/9/2003

You name a sushi restaurant, I've been there. Recently, I tried Mikado Ryotei. I was completely overwhelmed. First, the FOOD: Terriffic! The SUSHI servings are extremely generous and so tasty. You can literally taste the freshness in each bite (TORO is to die for). Their entree meals are so very delightful. Second, the SERVICE: Beautiful people serving quality food at a beautiful restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect; you never want to leave! This is been my single best experience in all of TX! Pros: QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY more

Toss Up 9/9/2003

It is truly great to have so many fine choices for sushi in Austin. I have frequented Musashino for quite some time, but was recently left with a less than ""wow"" experience there. So, off to Mikado we went. A much more classy feel. The service - better. The price - better. The food - very similar. The price - a little less expensive. I choose Mikado over Musashino. My wife, from Japan, chooses Musashino for the eclectic atmosphere. Pros: Food, Service, Class Cons: Outside appearance more

Simply the best 8/26/2003

Every time I come to Mikado's, I leave completely satisfied with every aspect of my meal. The sushi is fresh and presented beautifully. The appetizers and tapas are perfect starters to a meal. The beef and tuna tataki are excellent. The entrees such as the duck breast and miso salmon are prepared flawlessly. The quantity is sufficient even for the largest of appetites. The tempura ice cream is the best way to end a meal of this magnitude, in my opinion. Pricing for the food is extremely fair. 2 people with a full course meal at about $50-60 after tax. But the highlight of the meal comes with the service. Always friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. The food is served in a very timely matter, thus preventing lots of idle time. A must-try restaurant for all food lovers. Pros: Food, Service, Price more

Outstanding! 8/21/2003

Impecable service and some of the best sushi I've ever had. Pros: Service, Food, Ambiance more

Best in Town 6/30/2003

Walk into Mikado and you'll be overtaken by the beauty of this restaurant. You'll receive a warm and friendly ""shout out"" by the sushi chefs. The staff is attentive, friendly, professional and attentive without being overbearing! The food? The presentation is artistic, the flavor is out of this world, the price is reasonable. If you are intimidated by sushi choices, select the Mikado's Combo. For two people it is a perfect meal, and very reasonable. We added Jumbo Ebi Tempura, lightly battered shrimp prawns (huge) and tempura vegetables. I recommend this restaurant for lunches, dinner, parties, events. Everyone will be impressed with Mikado. Outstanding! Pros: reasonable, selection, ambiance more

Not one bad experience yet 6/16/2003

This place is great for people into real sushi and those who need Americanized foods in order to eat. The service has always been great and their sake offering is excellent and varied enough for every price range. Their sushi, both raw and cooked, always taste very fresh. Their teriyaki dishes and not overly sweet and have great flavor. The tempura is also highly recommended. I normally visit a place I like a handful of times to see if it is any good. I have not had one bad experience (food or service wise) here. Pros: great food, great decor Cons: parking spaces small more

NO wonder it's #1 4/10/2003

First visit was impressive, recently went back with a group of sushi lovers, they blamed me for not telling them about this wonderful restaurant! SUSHI IS TOP GRADED ! SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE! AND AMBIENCE IS THE BEST IN AUSTIN BY FAR!!! MIKADO , did it again , this place is a MUST TRY!! Pros: Sushi, Service, Ambience Cons: Yet to be found more

Great lunch spot... 1/28/2003

moderately priced sushi, not sacrificing quality. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. I would definitely recommend. more

Great sushi restaurant!! 1/22/2003

I took my wife to Mikado for our anniversary. I made reservations, although it didn't end up being neccessary. However, once people find out about this place, its going to get popular. We had sushi rolls and they were awesome. I can especially recommend the spicy tuna. If you're not in the mood for sushi, though, their menu is packed with other japanese dishes that sounded really good too. The service was great - prompt, often, and friendly. The sushi chefs greeted each new customer and thanked them for coming in. The decor is upscale but not pretentious. All that and good prices! My wife and I ordered four rolls and desert, and we got out of there for $43, including tax and tip. I definitely recommend this place. Pros: Great sushi, inexpensive, not crowded more

Good stuff... 1/9/2003

Definitely try this place out if you like Musashino quality but don't want to pay Musashino prices. The atmosphere and service is far superior and everything I've tried thus far has been excellent. I was there on a Friday night and by 10:00 we were the only people left in the restaurant. I really want to see this place stay alive so give it a try...it's only one meal (and well worth it!). Pros: fresh fish, friendly waitstaff, calming atmosphere more

Best in Austin 1/3/2003

GREAT Sushi - best I've had in Austin. The spicy Tuna Rolls were outstanding and the service was great! One drawback...cheesy Japanese pop music playing in the background. more

A Winner! 11/26/2002

I had seen the sign for Mikado and decided to try it last night for a birthday dinner. I've been to alot of sushi restaurants from the West coast to the Caribbean and this place is hands down THE best. The decor is first class, and the food is unbelievable. Mikado also had an extensive sake menu and very attentive service. And the prices were very reasonable for sushi. The only thing preventing the evening from being truly exceptional was a screaming toddler, though not the fault of the restaurant. That being said, it was an enjoyable culinary experience at a first-rate restaurant - something Austin has been lacking on the Asian restaurant scene. Pros: food, service, decor Cons: toddler/kids more

The best... 11/7/2002

As Musashino is evidentally the benchmark for sushi around town, I must compare it and say this place is better. Kills it when it comes to atmosphere, but more importantly...better sushi. more

Irresistibly Unbeatable!!! 10/30/2002

Without question, this restaurant surpasses all other sushi restuarants in this city. Upon entering, the skilled sushi chefs immediately greet you with a hearty ""Irasshaimase!"". The reasonably priced and beautifully presented food exceeds all expectations. This is one restaurant that can easily knock Musashino's off it's current throne. more

Sushi Mamma Says Yes to Mikado!! 10/22/2002

I am a huge sushi lover and a great appreciator of the culinary world and all cuisines. I have been to Mikado a few timea and each time was just as good. The food is wonderful, best I've had in Austin, and the price is great for the portions!! Try this place please....I want it to stick around. more

Mixed Feelings 10/21/2002

I have been to Mikado on several occasions. The food is always excellent but the service can range. They are always gracious but on one visit our table did not have soy sauce and after our second request (a few mins after the food had arrived) it took the waitress another 5 mins to bring it. Also, one friend asked if they could make a veg tempura dish (not on the menu), which was no problem however when the bill arrived, she was charge the price of the shrimp tempura entree, which was quite pricey. Paying that much for fried vegs was highway robbery. Pros: ample parking, no wait, great food Cons: sometimes service more

oishi! 10/20/2002

their nigiri sushi is cut generously. toro(fatty tuna) is divine. their gyu tataki is recommended; the best i ever tasted, so tender! instead of caterpillar roll, i would recommend unagi roll since it is cheaper. they are made from the same ingredients and tasted the same. what surprised me the most was their hamachi roll. i never thought hamachi could be that good in a roll. the mushroom combo was good, but that is something i can make at home. it is still worth a try, so u can make it at home later : ). i didn't really like kaki masago roll; i think it would have been better if there was some mayo-based sauce in it. i will definitely go back and try more dishes/rolls. more

Best NEW sushi in town 10/16/2002

My husband and I have had two great experiences here and I would highly recommend. We are both big sushi fans and have found the sushi experience in Austin to be lacking (but definitely getting better!) The decor at Mikado is beautiful and there is no wait. The chairs are a little uncomfortable as they obviously chose asthetics over comfort. The sushi chefs are very friendly. I also really like the crowds - more Austin and less pretentious! Try the Chilean Sea Bass for an appetizer - it is wonderful! Pros: food, service, atmosphere more
