bad sushi great service 11/9/2006

We dined here last night and the sushi was average...probably will not return...the service was excellent Pros: bad sushi more

Dont make reservations there! 10/6/2006

If you have a large party Mikado will not accommodate you. We tried to book a party of 15 three days in advanced and they initially agreed but then kept calling us trying to get us to change our time. They would go back and forth with the reservation time and they not very accommodating. There are too many other restaurants in Austin that appreciate our business and we are very disappointed with their customer service. They just lost 15 patrons!\r \r If you have a large party GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!\r \r Uripides more

Extremely good all around 9/20/2006

Great rolls- large, very fresh, well-rolled, and balanced in textures. The sauces are also excellent, and unlike some other local restaurants, the tables are amply spaced. The interior is nicely designed; this would probably be a great place to take a date. \r \r We had spicy tuna rolls, spicy salmon rolls, yellowfin tuna nigiri and the krazi rolls. All were awesome. The krazi roll was probably the best roll I've had being that I love eel and eel sauce.\r \r Mushashino used to be my favorite, but I'm moving over to Mikado now for the price and atmosphere. If you like good sushi and a nice environment without paying premium prices for extremely dinky portions (Uchi, I'm looking at you) try this place.\r \r Pros: Excellent sushi, nice atmosphere, parking Cons: 4.25 for mineral water? more

Best sushi ever 8/27/2006

This restaurant frankly serves the best sushi I have had. I have been there several times and both the food and service have been consistently excellent. It can be a bit pricey, but it is well worth it. The atmosphere is also relaxing, intimate feeling, and quite romantic. I recommend it for any date or special occasion. Pros: Excellent sushi, romantic atmosphere, great service Cons: Slightly more expensive than average sushi, but well worth it more

Beautiful and delicious sushi. Elegant, romantic atmosphere. 7/10/2006

My friends and I all seem to agree that this is the best sushi restaurant in town. Spacious tables in an elegant dining room are so much better than the cramped little tables I'm used to at sushi restaurants. The sushi is fresh and delicious. I love the thinly sliced seared beef appetizer. It is served in a martini glass and melts in your mouth. The Hottie Susan is fantastic. They also have an excellent eel/ebi roll, I think it is called Krazy Ebi or something. It has tempura flakes and the most succulent eel I've tasted, along with a very good sauce. It is by far the best eel roll I've had in Austin. The service is always prompt and attentive. \r \r They also have a lovely private dining room for large parties. But there truly isn't a bad seat in the restaurant. Pros: Sushi freshness, flavor and presentation. Quiet and romantic. Cons: A little pricey, but not more expensive than the other sushi restaurants in town. more

Great for lunch! 6/22/2006

Fresh, tasty food served quickly. The bento lunches are a fantastic value for your $$. I've tried the grilled scallop, sushi, and Chorishi's tempura bentos and they are all extremely good. Sushi a la carte is fresh and unpretentious at a fair price, though the unagi maki is slightly oversauced. Attentive, respectful service. Prompt seating before noon and after 1:00. A great getaway from the office. Pros: good food at a good price, ambiance is soothing Cons: can get crowded on the weekend and during the lunch hour more

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Austin. The food and service are both great. Their speciality rolls very creative and delicious. more

The best restaurant in Austin! 3/5/2006

I can be very picky about my food. I almost hate trying new places because I always run the risk of throwing my money away on something that I think tastes awful. Not the case with Mikado! I was VERY pleased with my visit. The service was outstanding, the sushi was the best I've ever had and the food was great! Prices were reasonable ($60 for 2 people with appetizer, sushi, dinner and dessert and tip) and worth every penny. I can't wait to go back! Pros: great service, great food, great ambience Cons: NONE! more

Yummy 2/22/2006

They have great sushi and rolls. I love their spider rolls and snow crab crunch. The best part about this place, in my opinion, is it's versatility. It can be casual for lunch and romantic enough for dinner. Pros: food, parking more

Never had better! 1/5/2006

I have been three times in the last year, the most recent time being a few weeks ago. Every time was absolutely delicious! Order some hot sake, some wine, or a Japanese beer, and get a few rolls with a friend! The tempura vegetable appetizer is also very good, as is the miso soup. I don't know how to describe the quality of everything overall except to say that if anyone ever suggests Japanese, this is the one I clamor for!! (I've never had this problem, but if you're thinking of ordering something that says ""market price"", find out first what the market price is--don't order something if you don't know how expensive it is! market conditions sometimes dictate surprisingly high prices!) Pros: food, drink, romantic lighting Cons: pricey, far north more

not worhty of rating 8/29/2005

I went with high hopes as the rating was so high. Not completely disappointed but it was certainly not worthy of a 9.7 3 of us ordered a sashimi meal. It was the first time I had been given the miso soup after the sashimi had arrived, which was generally ok but the tuna was dry, and the pieces of fish were small. Even the pickled ginger had seen better days. Had to constantly ask the waiter to top up water glasses, but generally service was ok. Ordered 2 special rolls which were tasty but kept falling apart. However standard spicy rolls (we had tuna, salmon and yellowtail) were excellent and inexpensive. Good, but not excellent. Cons: so dark more

One of my FAVORITE Japanese restaurants! 8/19/2005

This place has one of the best dragon rolls around. Plus, they have much more on their menu, and they're all delicious. I'm the type who doesn't eat raw fish, but Mikado has so much other stuff to offer that it doesn't matter. My boyfriend and I usually order six rolls, and they'll make us full. It's such a great place here, you'll just have to try it! Pros: GREAT food Cons: REALLY dark more

Wow... great sushi 3/23/2005

Pricy but delicious. The Ebi 2 nearly made me cry, not because it was spicy but because I couldn't stop even though it was burning my mouth. Remained in my mind for days after. Seriously good, Ebi 2. The seaweed salad was good, not much different from any other place but had great presentation. Gyoza was very good - hated sharing it. Love it when miso has the seaweed in it. Presentation was beautiful and loved the environment. Pros: romantic, sushi, fast more

Great everything! 1/6/2005

Having lived on the west coast for a while, I've had incredible sushi direct from japanese sushi masters. Even when taking that into consideration, Mikado is as close as it comes considering we are in central texas. Bar none - this is the best sushi bar in austin, from my experience. The spicy tuna melts in your mouth (as it should) and the rice, which is key, is done just right. Oh, and I've never had eel taste as good as I've had from Mikado's, anywhere! So, go at a normal dinner hour and you're sure to get the best rolls in austin. Enjoy! Pros: GREAT food, Fast friendly service more

Best sushi in Austin 9/14/2004

I have been to most sushi restaurants in Austin, and nothing has surpassed the quality of Mikado. In fact, this is one of the best sushi restaurants I have EVER been to and I travel quite a bit. The fish is always very fresh, and the rice is just right, not too sticky or too dry. The cooked food is delicious as well. I highly recommend the sea bass appetizer, the mushroom package, the seaweed salad, and the grilled tofu (even if you don't like tofu, this is phenomenal). I don't know why people make such a big fuss over Musashino and Uchi as I think their sushi quality doesn't even come close to Mikado's and the prices are exorbitant. Pros: Great sushi, Plenty of Parking, No wait for a table more

Very Impressive 8/22/2004

The food and service was a splendid combition. Very pretty waitresses and hostesses (all petite asian college girls) give exemplary service. The sushi was among the best I have had in this town. The appetizers were cutting edge and delicious. The place is beautiful. Think of it as a Kenichi without the trashy side. I highly recommend Mikado to anyone. It would be even better if they had a bar. Pros: Sushi, Appetizers, Pretty Servers Cons: , So so location more

Consistantly excellent 7/22/2004

I can't say enough good things about this place... The sushi chefs are friendly and knowledgeable, the waiters are courteous, and the sushi is always delicious. Pros: Parking, Sushi, Ambiance more

absolute best 7/20/2004

I am so thrilled that my friends and I stumbled across Mikado. Their snow crab roll is divine, the crunchy kazi roll is excellent, and the anago ngiri makes me sigh with delight. This restaurant is far better than Musashino or Uchi. The atmosphere is far superior, you get generous portions of fish, the staff are very cool, and you don't leave feeling like your wallet got picked afterwards. more

Best Japanese food in town 3/8/2004

This restaurant has very new creative variations on their sushi and other Japanese dishes. We had a sashimi salad that was a special that was incredibly fresh and the different textures and tastes blended perfectly. The service always good and the atmosphere is friendly but remains elegant. It's expensive but definitely worth it. It's also more because we always have to order a little bit of everything! Pros: Excellent food, Great Service, Fun Atmosphere more

The BEST! 2/16/2004

I've been to almost every sushi restaurant in town, and Mikado is the best! Not only is their presentation spectacular, but the ambiance is wonderful (you can hear yourself talk!), and the sushi is the freshest! Often my boyfriend and I find ourselves moaning after taking bites it is so good. I have also never had to wait for a table. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. This is not your stuffy snooty sushi restaurant. I haven't seen any celebs yet, but that is not why I go our for sushi. If you like to eat good sushi, and are not going out just to ""be seen"", Mikado is the place for you! Pros: Presentation, Freshness, Ambiance more
