Mikado Ryotei

Mikado has, without a doubt, the best sushi here in Austin. The sushi chefs are all very delicate and good at their skills. The waitresses are all lovely and provide the best of service. I have never experienced a better combination of sushi and waitress service. The owner is very kind and friendly. The only problem I constantly experience here is the manager. She provides horrible service and never smiles like everybody else there. She has poor relationship skills and, in my opinion, be the downfall of Mikado. I love this place. My fiance and I eat sushi twice a week and we finally decided to try Mikado, its love at first bite. If you are in the mood for some excellent sushi go to Mikado! more

Mikado is simply fantastic. Their menu has some very creative and outstanding appetizers and starters (the mushroom package is a must-try), their sushi is quite good, and the people are lovely. The sushi chefs greet everyone that comes in with a hearty ""Irasshaimase!"" and bid a kind adieu on their exit. The servers are extrememly friendly and helpful, and the management is great -- I spent about 10 minutes talking with the owner and chef outside the door on my last visit, and they seemed genuinely pleased that I'd enjoyed myself, genuinely interested in what I thought of everything I'd had, and genuinely humble when I said I'd recommended Mikado to all my friends. I've also been seated right away every time, even on weekends -- while this is nice, hopefully it doesn't bode badly for their business. After living in Austin for almost a year, I have tried many of the plentiful sushi restaurants here. Mikado is the best I've had so far. Although I find Umi and Sushi Sake both great, I felt Mikado surpassed them. My boyfriend and I went in one day for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. The chefs were very friendly and offered to pick a few things out for us if we needed them to do so. We ordered several rolls and a few pieces of shashimi. The pieces of shashimi were sliced then and not very thick like they are at Umi and Sushi Sake and when eating raw fish, I feel than thin is better. The rolls were fresh and flavorful. Had lunch at Mikado and it doesn't disappoint. The place is still new(very clean) and the presentation is as good as the food. The portions were big and the rolls were excellent......just can't beat that spicy sauce. It is not romantic at all with the booths, big open area and wall of window but who needs romance. We have been to Mikado several times and consistently have had good food and attentive service. The sushi was always of top quality and it is the only restaurant in town that can make a good agedashi tofu. The interior is elegant and subtle. The whole staff says ""thank you"" when you exit. The food here is excellent. Sushi is very fresh, with one of the freshest fishes around town. Definitely recommend the toro. They actually make some real miso, not the watered down soups elsewhere. Interior design is beautiful. Very chic and contemporary....incomparable to other Japanese restaurants. Has a wide variety of entrees also, all beautifully made. Waitstaff is excellent. I've been to Mikado several times and I try to introduce as many friends to the delicious food there. The ambience is very good, the waitstaff, unlike some other places, very polite and not stuck-up and the Sushi is Excellent! They also have delightful appetizers on their menu.
