Best

great doctor, knows what he is doing . old and new ideas work well with this genius. i love him and he saved my life. thank you for being my doctor.

Worst

I completely agree with the last post. Dr. Maclaren is very personable and extends a knowledgeable, thorough and diligent demeanor BUT every time I have needed him to call me back...

Editorial review from Citysearch 12/30/2013

Extremely unhelpful. I came to him having felt sluggish for months, and with a testosterone level around 200 (which is VERY low for a man my age). He said it was insulin resistance which he was a pioneer of, and said that all i could do about it was eat better and rest. I'm 39 years old - I don't think I should be needing mid-day naps. He also told me I was obese (200 lbs, 6'1"", 35 waist - overweight maybe, but I don't think that is obese). When I asked about testosterone gels, he told me he doesn't ever prescribe them and doesn't believe they do anything. I took his advice and after six weeks, literally could not get through the day without falling asleep at work mid-day and spent the whole weekend sleeping. I went to THREE doctors after this, each told me that I should be on the testosterone gel and to not to even consider it was irresponsible of Dr. Maclaren. Borderline malpractice because it can create other problems. I think Dr. Maclaren is a nice enough guy but he doesn't seem to keep up with modern medicine and biology. more

Exactly what the last Post said 2/28/2012

I completely agree with the last post. Dr. Maclaren is very personable and extends a knowledgeable, thorough and diligent demeanor BUT every time I have needed him to call me back concerning test results or my own concerns regarding my diagnosis he has FAILED to do so. There have been times I have called three or 4 times hoping to get him to call me back and still no response. Beyond frustrating- I think it completely improper behavior for a doctor. more

Great Doctor, but no follow up 2/2/2012

I go to Dr. Maclaren for Type 1 diabetes. He is a great doctor when you are in appointments with him. He personally checks all of your vitals and other signs of autoimmune and endocrine disorders, and he is very caring and explanatory when speaking to me about my condition. I don't have to wait very long in the waiting room to enter my appointments. I agree with previous reviews that he does not follow up at all. In my opinion, a good doctor should call you when you have had tests done to diagnose a potential problem regardless of whether or not the tests were good or bad. I have had a number of tests done, and I always have to call and have the results sent to me. Sometimes I have to call 3 or more times to get the results because the secretaries ""forgot"" to send it to me. Sometimes I don't even get ahold of the actual office, and the person who does answer has to fax them my message, which they obviously don't take action to send me what I need. If you read these reviews, Dr. Maclaren, you should seriously consider having your secretaries ACTIVELY send people their test results the moment you get them. Even if you don't call the patient personally, they will have some sense that you are following up on them, even if there is no real concern in the test results. more

The Best Endocrinologist in NY 3/23/2011

I met Dr. Maclaren in 2002, when my 2 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 DM. He back in 2002, was on the cutting edge of diabetes research and helped my family and I . He provided us with the option of insulin pump therapy... we will forever be grateful for his wisdom and knowledge and dedication to diabetes. Consequently, my second son was diagnosed with Type 1 in 2009, thanks to his wisdom were able to transition into caring for him with the greatest of ease. Without his kind, compassionate, humane attitude, our children would not be recieving the best treatment out there. My life would be very different had I never met Dr. Maclaren, he has empowered my husband and I to care for our children, through his patience, knowledge, empathy, and being human. I hold him in the highest regard as a physician, anyone would be highly privelaged to have him caring for you or your children. I will continue to refer any one who may need his services.... more

False review 2/28/2011

Dr Maclaren notes with sadness for the individual who wrote this this completely false and erroneous review. I ask Brenda to identify herself so that he can proceed with libel proceedings. more

DECEPTIVE BUSINESS PRACTICES FALSE DIAGNOSIS BAD STAFF 12/10/2010

TOO MANY COMPLAINTS CAME FROM PATIENTS OF DR. MACLAREN. His staff is rude and unprofessional Other doctors come and go from here and staff has ongoing turn over. Dr. Maclaren gives wrong and false diagnosis regardless that blood tests are negative, so that he can keep more patients coming and fill his quota of drug perscriptions as he is allied with certain pharmacy companies which he fails to disclose to his many patients. He does not correct his false diagnosis and he is writing a book with using patient information without the many patients knowledge nor permission. Due to the number of patient complaints we have reported Dr. Maclaren to the NYSDOH and HHS both state and federal. stay tuned more to follow on our ongoing investigations of this Doctor and his questionable practices that are in violation of state and federal law. more

ONE OF THE BEST DOCTORS 8/13/2010

You are the best! Dr. Mac Claren was and is very patient with me. I came to him 3 years ago with Graves disease. my eyes were bulging, hands shaking and blood pressure sky high.I had previously lost 80 pounds and was only worried about my weight. Dr. Mac Claren told me the seriousness about my thyroid condition . I was totally oppositional in the beginning. However, through his patience, understanding and medical expertise my thyroid is normal and I did not gain back the weight. I realize that weight is just one factor into a healthy life. I am working out at the gym , taking spinning classes, biking and taking classes with people half my age. I am 67 and am enjoying my life. Thank you Dr. Mac Claren . I will continue coming into New York from New Jersey.! more

Excellent doctor 8/4/2010

I have seen Dr. Maclaren for 10 years. He is an excellent doctor, a respected medical scientist and a kind, selfless person. Many times, he has personally called me over the weekend to give me updates and advice. more

Excellent Dr. Highly Recommended 8/3/2010

Dr. Noel Maclaren has been my physician for several years. He takes care to spend time and listen to my concerns. He addresses my symptoms in a manner that is to my utmost satisfaction. I consider Dr. Maclaren to be one of the most caring and thorough physicians I have ever encountered. I would recommend him to anyone in need of help in his area of specialty. I assure you, you will be pleased with his extraordinary service. Pros: caring and thorough Cons: no cons more

Do not call you back 7/7/2010

He was my doctor for 3 years. He was ok but smelled cigarettes most of the time. However, 2 weeks ago I had an appointment and went to his office 9 am from Jersey just to find out he was not going to be in the office that day. No body even bothered to call me and let me know. I did not want to go back all the way and asked if he would call me back with test results to see if my med needs to be adjusted. After that I left him 3 messages and he still did not call back. I am changing my doctor now, and hoping the secretary will fax over the test results. He used to have a very nice secretary but new one is very rude. So overall i give him 1 start Cons: Never calls back more

Unacceptable handling of patient 6/28/2010

I was a thyroid patient of another doctor in this practice, who was planning to leave. But though she was leaving, she said I could see her one last time at BioSeek, and that I could decide then whether to continue with BioSeek or follow her to her new practice. I was pleased with this doctor, and I thought everything was fine for this appointment, which was scheduled for early on a Monday morning. But late on the Friday before, I got a call saying my appointment for Monday was canceled since my doctor had already left the practice, and that I could reschedule with Dr. MacLaren. So I tracked down the doctor I was originally to see. She was very apolgetic, and said she'd been barred from notifying her patients that she was being forced to leave the practice earlier than she'd planned. That Dr. MacLaren or whoever runs this office would put some kind of dispute with another doctor over the wishes or needs of patients speaks very badly of this practice. I'm being treated for what turned out to be thyroid cancer, which is difficult and annoying enough without having to tolerate this sort of stupidity. I'd avoid Bioseek and Dr. MacLaren. I'm even wondering if I should complain to the state licensing authorities about how this was handled. Cons: Canceled appointment in business dispute with another doctor more

Wonderful Doctor 8/24/2009

I was a student in NYC for a few years and developed a thyroid problem. I did some research online and found Dr. Maclaren. His waiting list is quite long, so I was lucky to get an appointment. He worked with me my lost two years of college and helped me tremendously. He always takes his time and explains everything in detail when I ask him questions. After I graduated, I moved back to my hometown a thousand miles away, and he still works with me over the phone and only rarely requires office visits. He's truly an amazing doc. If he's on your insurance, run, do not walk, to Dr. Maclaren. (He's a bit expensive if you're not covered.) I wouldn't ever go elsewhere! Pros: takes his time, works with you from out of town more

Avoid him if you like knowing your test results 2/21/2009

Seriously, avoid him like the plague if you like your doctors to call you back. I called him four times in ten days after my test results arrived at his office. He never called back and his secretary kept saying that he's extremely busy, and that ""no news means good news"". I eventually asked for my results to be mailed to me so I can take it to another doctor. If anyone's interested, the test results didn't indicate good news. In short, he could be a great diagnostician for all I know, but no one will have the chance to find out if he NEVER calls people back about their test results. Pros: Very nice secretary Cons: NEVER CALLS BACK ABOUT TEST RESULTS, long waiting room time more

Patronizing, unhelpful; waste of time and money 9/15/2008

This doctor was patronizing and extremely unhelpful. He kept me waiting almost an hour, and even though I advised him at the start of my meeting with him that I was not satisfied with T4 treatment and would like to try combinatio T3/T4 therpy, he waited until he had wasted almost two additional hours of my time to tell me that he refused to prescribe T3. He did not address any of my concerns about my thyroid, instead he insisted I must have an insulin problem or a gastrointestinal auto-immune disorder, despite no evidence to suggest either of these theories. I strongly suggest you try any other doctor; this one is a waste of time and money. Cons: Kept me waiting almost an hour; rude office staff; refused to address any of my concerns, tried to order unnecessary tests, a waste of time more

Good initial visit (for $450 it should be), but NO follow up at all. 6/23/2008

Dr. Maclaren is definately very knowledgable and up to date with current research in both the fields of diabetes and thyroid. My first (and last) visit lasted 90 minutes. I was actually quite impressed (initially). $1500 of lab tests later and NO resolution to my thyroid problem, I am sorry to say this is one of the worst experiences I have had with a medical professional. After insisting I was insulin resistant (despite having normal lipid profiles, normal bp, normal everything, and having told him I eat no processed carbs/sugar, exercise, etc) he ordered $1500 of lab tests. I really only needed him to adjust my synthroid as I was sure my TSH was high as I felt awful. All my tests were normal, but my TSH was 5.3 (up from 2.3 and 1.3 before). I explained at length how I felt ""normal"" at 1.3. He refused to do anything about my synthroid until I had ANOTHER TSH done. This was 2.0. The change in 5.3 and 2.0 occurred within one week of each other. I went to the same lab, same time, same everything. I have called his office repeatedly to try to speak with him, and he has never called me back. In fact, the only time he called back was when I told his secretary I would seek treatment elsewhere if he did not have the time. I was very, very disappointed, as it seems he has no care or concern in monitoring me or helping me with my persistant symptoms. I am in the health care field and know a bit about how things work. Pros: Thoughrough initial assessment Cons: No follow up treatment or calls without badgering his office staff. Still waiting for call back from 2 weeks ago! more
