Twice as Nice 3/16/2009

""Two Times a Winner"" by gardeningorganically (1 review) \r March 16, 2009 - Likes it - We revisited Mackes this weekend to see what all of the talk was about. I understand that Mackes hired a new chef about 6 months ago and that the menu had changed drastically. The scallop dish we had was without a doubt the best we have ever had in all of our travels. The ""moon pie"" house made was a great take and the RC cola was a blast. In the Graces Plaza makes this restaurant a hidden treasure. We understand that the brunch is equally delightful and we intend to be a regular. In the restaurant enviroment of recent Mackes is worthy of the locals support. Pros: Best Food in Town Cons: A little hard to find more

Terrific Food & Elegant, Unpretentious Atmosphere 1/20/2009

This place would be a welcome addition to the restaurant scene anywhere. I was taken here by an old friend and was blown away by the food. I played it safe and ordered filet mignon, which was aged and perfectly prepared (rare). My companions had filleted trout and ... dang, I can't remember what else... but it was all terrific. I especially remember one of my buddies' crisp, deep-fried collard greens... sort of like potato chips but perfectly captured the essence of greens... an original preparation and very tasty. Very nice glass of Merlot from the best short wine list I have seen outside of San Francisco. Nashville's food scene has come a long way in the last 15 years, and Macke's is truly outstanding. Pros: Very good food that would satisfy even the most sophisticated visitor; quiet, understated atmosphere. more

Best Kept Secret In Green Hills 9/5/2008

After a three week search for the perfect venue to host a 90th birthday celebration for my father's closest friends and family, I happened upon Macke's while searching for another restaurant using City Search. Upon reading the restaurant information, I decided to call and then to visit. From beginning to end, every contact was delightful and professional. Jan and Jill at Macke's cared as much about my father's celebration as I did, and helped me to execute the perfect evening for 30+ guests. Our waiters were attentive and pleasant as we engaged in a spectacular menu of individual choices for each guest. Jan, Jill and I had worked together to designed a variety of course choices specific for our celebration. All guests departed commenting on what a spectacular evening we enjoyed, and that surely Macke's is the best kept secret for fine dining with a personal touch in Green Hills! Pros: parking - ample convenient parking in Green Hills - unbeliveable but true Cons: none come to mind more

Over the Top 9/1/2008

I went back to Mackes to dine and found that they have changed the menu and was fortunate enough to \r try the new menu on the second night out. The food was over the top, the new chef seems to have settled in to a style of cooking unlike any other in the city of Nashville. His dishes are authentic and well thought out. A wonderful dining experience. Highly reccommended. Pros: A new menu outside more casual and a new menu inside more fine dining Cons: Hidden away more

Excellent!!!! 8/25/2008

We had dinner on Saturday night at this great intimate restaurant. The atomsphere was exceptional and the food was the best we have had in this city. The chef has captured the essence of Southern gourmet. Stick around Mackes we will be seeing alot of you!!! Pros: Excellent Cons: A little hidden away more

I LOVE this place. 8/20/2008

I've had dinner here 4 times in August. The food and the atmosphere are the best. The fresh est ingredients (especially the seafood) and everything is made with love. FRIED COLLARD GREENS? They come with the corn-encrusted grouper and heirloom tomato vinagrette. Also, with the crab cakes (which beat any crab cake on the Chesapeake Bay). This place is top notch. more

Surprising find 7/21/2008

My wife and I were delightfully surprised at our latest find among the culinary establishments residing in the fair city of Green Hills. We live in Hendersonville and spend our date nights sampling restaurants we have never visited. Macke's is absolutely at the top of our list. Exquisite food and impeccable service highlighted our evening. The room was dimily lit with hints of Sinatra and white linen table clothes. Surprisingly the ambience was extremely romantic considering the restaurant is located above Gracie's mall. Jamie and the staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. Pros: Food and service Cons: location more

Absoluetly AMAZING~Thanks to Chef Toby!!!! 7/20/2008

This restaurant is a little hard to find but that is part of the wonderful adventure. My girlfriends and I ate lunch there last week and had the best food that can be found in this city. They have a new chef and their committment to fresh fish daily peaked all of our appetites. We were not disappointed. The food was incredible and the service was equally as great. We would highly recommend this restaurant. We have reservations for next week for our monthly dinner. Pros: Fabulous Food Cons: A little hard to find the first time but it is where you renew your license plates more

great food; great service 10/11/2007

My dining experiences at Macke's, several lunches and a dinner, have all been very enjoyable. The service each time has been prompt with a friendly wait staff. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the food is excellent. I ordered the special a few saturday nights back, a scallop dish, that was the best I think I've ever eaten. It was beautifully presented along with cheese polenta and green beans. Would love to see it added to the regular menu... I have recommended Macke's to several others, as it promises to be a very enjoyable and tasty experience. more

Great Lunches 9/22/2007

We have eaten here a half dozen times in two months & the experience has always been the same. Great service, Great food, Great ambiance and Great value for the money. This is Nashville's best kept secret. Pros: Has no equal more

Not worth the wait. 9/19/2007

I had high expectations for this restaurant after hearing a good review from a friend. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed by the food, the service, and the overall value.\r The service was probably the worst part of the experience. We had to wait almost thirty minutes to get our meals, and then another 30 minutes after we were finished before we finally got our checks. What was meant to be an hour lunch turned into a 2 hour and 15 minute ordeal. Meanwhile, our drinks sat empty and we did not receive any apologies for the delay. There were two well-behaved children in our party and the restaurant did not have any high-chairs for the kids, let alone any kid-friendly food.\r I ordered the ravioli entree, which was crunchy on the edges and very oily. It came with a limp salad, which I would have appreciate before the meal. Instead, it came along with the entree. The portions were small for the price and I had to request bread to augment the meal. The server acted like this was an unsual request and told me it would take 5 minutes to get bread.\r Needless to say, I won't be returning. more

Worth the search - absolutely wonderful food 7/11/2007

We continued our tour of nice eating establishments on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 with Macke's (I can't pronounce it either). I had heard the place was well hidden in the back of graces plaza in green hills so expected the search. Thank goodness I had heard that it was inside and upstairs or we may have missed it but fortunate for us we found it. AND, the food was wonderful. My wife and I will typically share one appetizer and one salad, each get an entree and then share a nice dessert. This worked very well at Macke?s. \r We had the pear and blue cheese quesadilla as the appetizer and it was wonderful ? almost large enough for a meal and so good we wanted to eat it all but knew it we did, we would not be able to complete the meal. The salad was just the right size ? they split it for us and the combination of goat cheese, spinach, pine nuts and slightly sweet dressing was great. Our entrees were wonderfully prepared ? she had the fresh salmon and I had the lamb. Our food was timely, well prepared and tasted great. The dessert ? I am a push-over for key lime pie was a surprising alternative to the normal key lime pie ? this example was well-prepared by the chef and was an extremely light take to the standard fare which we both enjoyed. I would highly recommend Macke?s as a venue if you have the chance. For the meal described above, expect to pay $100 but you could order less expensive entrees and get by for less. We also took sample of the bar and order a nice bottle of pinot noir which was obviously overpriced but I haven?t found a eatery in Nashville that will charge equitably for a bottle ? they all have to make 300%.\r Overall, a wonderful evening and meal ? also note they have a private that can seat approximately 12 which I will probably use the next time I have clients in. Pros: Service and quality of the food Cons: somewhat hidden which is not necessarily bad more

excellent execution, unusual presentation and down right tasty stuff 11/27/2006

We arrived early with a reservation and were the second table filled. The food is very high quality, kinda fancy dress attire. Ambience is OK, but the wait staff was very solicitous. We ordered a salmon thingy for an appetizer - a small tower layered with barely seared salmon, sliced strawberries, goat cheese & a couple of other ingredients, with a toasted pita sticking artfully from the side of the pile. Mama mia! Quite delicious. I ordered the chef's paella (it might have been called something else), and it was delicious. A light but flavorful broth, with spicey sausage, tender sliced chicken and several types of seafood. Oh, and the salad was quite tasty, as well. This is one of the best dinners I've had in Nashville. Pros: very nice wait staff, wonderful food, prompt seating Cons: not too intimate if you're looking for a romantic dinner more
