Best

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles. Excellent soups, including their signature 'caldo de pollo', which is over the top. Their food is always fresh and portion...

Worst

I do like the food at La cabinita & I go to a lot of mexican restaurants!!! I have been there 3 times. So food is not the problem, it's the service, the service really drags this...

GROSS FOOD 10/30/2010

The food here ws digusting. I was sick all night after eathing there. The sour cream was watered down and looked like milk. The gucamole tasted like it was from a powder mix. The meat was disgusting and the rice was hard. I just can't believe that it was so packed. People must like to eat garbage, because that is what they serve. more

DISGUSTING 10/30/2010

WE HAD DINNER AT THIS PLACE. CHECKED OUT THE REVIEWS AND THOUGHT GREAT. ORDERED FAJITAS. I CANNOT EVEN EXPLAIN WHAT IT TASTED LIKE. I STILL FEEL SICK. DRY HARD MEAT AND THE VEGETABLES APPEARED OLD. THEY SERVE THE FAJITAS WITH A VERY SMALL PORTION OF BEANS AND HARD RICE WITH ABOUT 10 SLIVERS OF LETTUCE. I ASKED FOR SOUR CREAM AND GUACAMOLE (THE USUAL WAY IT IS SERVED). THE GUACAMOLE APPEARED TO BE FROM A BOXED MIX AND THE SOUR CREAM WAS WATERED DOWN LIKE A SOUP. TRULY DISGUSTING. THE PLAC E WAS PACKED, I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY. GROSS! more

Unique Mexican Food 6/10/2010

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles. Excellent soups, including their signature 'caldo de pollo', which is over the top. Their food is always fresh and portions are fairly large. I love their chips and salsas and margaritas...and would make the trek even for that alone! more

La Cabanita is over rated! 11/13/2009

This hole in the wall is overrated. (It really is small.) Success ruined them. They just cannot keep up with their popularity and the quality of their service especially has declined. First time, we went for breakfast we had a good experience. I went for lunch with a friend and both service and food were medicore. The last time we went they were just outright rude, especially the manager/bartender. Seems they have their favorite clientele and if the big man deems you persona no grata, you're not to be treated decently. Seriously. It really seems like they just want to cater to celebrities (all from previous decades.) more

Shoddy service and double standards? 10/25/2009

The food is better than average but the service we received was shoddy. We went in dressed casual on a Sunday afternoon. Street casual definitely not Sunday best nor Mexico City pretension. The waitress told us to sit anywhere so we walked up the short stairway to the level that separates the restaurant and sat ourselves at an empty table. The manager or someone with apparent authority appeared out of nowhere and told us rudely and loudly that the area was closed although there were other patrons at tables. No explanation. No apology. No courtesy. My impression is that they are selective about who they will treat graciously, probably just their local regulars. Pros: food is better than average and sometimes excellant Cons: shoddy service more

HORRIBLE SERVICE 5/30/2009

Food is really good, and many times have put up with the pathetic service to eat there. This time I will have to say I was perplexed at the attitude of the owner and his behavior! Actually was on the verge of being abusive and I will never set foot in the restaurant again! Pros: Good Food Cons: Terrible Service not worth the good food! more

Great Food 5/8/2009

The food here is awesome! They have amazing black beans and the enchiladas are to die for. I would recommend this place to anyone. The service is always good and the prices are decent. more

Delicious Mexican Food! 4/29/2009

The carnitas they serve here are cooked to perfection: crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. And you can't beat their freshly made tortillas. Delicious! \r Wonderful margaritas, too. \r Warning: Do not go here during peak hours -- very crowded. more

Great food for the money 4/10/2009

The food is great. Their lunch specials are a good deal...the mole sauce is wonderful. This place is a great alternative to the La Caserio in Silverlake...if you want service that is. And the food frankly is better here even though it costs less. Pros: Food Cons: Service OK...place can be nicer more

Bad Omelet 10/26/2008

It is too bad they wanted to add new items to their menu along with raising the price on most of their food. Well, if you want to have a good breakfast (omelet) La Cabanita is not the best place to go. their breakfast menu its mostly vegetarian and the Omelet i had today Oct 26 2008 10:30 am, was a total disappointment. it was so thin that the first thing it comes to your mind its ( i wanted more :() well, i do not want to exagerate but they used one egg to make it, and the inside had about 4 litle strips of poblano peper, and just a few potatoes. even if i have had it with cheese and our cream, it would have been not better. another thing is that it was overpriced for being a new item on their menu. So if you want an omelet, Ihop, Shakers, the coffee table and many other restaurants other than La cabanita, are the best places to go to . more

Go for the sauces... 6/3/2008

My first time at La Cabanita the other night. A friend from out of town and I went on the recommendation of many! Firstly yes, the salsas and chips are absolutely wonderful especially the red one, so smoky, complex and just the right level of heat. The Tamarindo and Jamaica drinks were both overly sweet. The green mole sauce over chunks of tender pork was pretty good but the little stuffed chiles that sounded so great on the menu were really disappointing, the seasoning totally out of balance, There was so much cinnamon in the mixture that it ended up tasting rather like Dentyne gum or christmas pudding... not sure whether to try this place again. Pros: Salsa and chips more

Best Mexican Ever 2/18/2008

My wife and I have visited La Cabanita twice now. The food is awesome. They have their own sauces that taste like nothing I have ever tried before. Other than the usual wait on a Friday night which is to be expected of a popular place La Cabanita is the best Mexican Food we've had in LA so far. Pros: The Food Cons: None so Far more

THE best tacos in the city!!!! 1/5/2008

Two words: Cochinita Tacos. That's all you need to know when you go to this place. Sure the rest of the menu is amazing, but the cochinita tacos are absolutely, undoubtedly, without question, the best. Also, great cheap margaritas. Go. Go. Go. Pros: Great tacos, great mole, great margaritas, great prices Cons: I can't think of any more

Finest Mexican cuisine on the planet! 10/15/2007

This is simply, the finest Mexican restaurant I have ever visited. I ate there three times this week! Some of the offerings are very foreign to the western palette, like the Chile Nogado, where a poblano is filled with fruit and nuts in a light filling. The Chuletas, pork chops cooked in a pasilla sauce with sour cream, is sublime. as is the flan and the tortillas, which are made to order. My last meal included sopes compesta and a pork rind taco. I have always found the service fantastic. Great coffee in the morning as well, with a nice mexican pastry. more

Best Mexican Food ... End of Story. 10/6/2007

Hands down the best Mexican food I've ever tasted. We drive from Woodland Hills once every month or so and every time we return from a trip and are at the Burbank airport (halfway there). :-) Pros: Delicious food and tasty margaritas! Cons: Need a location in the San Fernando Valley!! LOL more

Couild be great, but NOT quite 8/21/2007

My wife and I have toured many of the best Mexican restaurants here in Southern California, the capitol of great mexican food outside of Mexico. Everytime a list of 10 best mexican restaurants comes out we visit each and make our decisions. La Cabanita was one of those restaurants. With high hopes we entered the cramped but quaint front area. There is a much larger dining area in back but we've never been seated back there. The good news was that the food tasted great!! The bad news is that the service was atrocious and impersonal. It took quite a long time to get asked for drinks. A while longer for our food order. When our order came to us both my wifes and mine was flawed. I asked for no cheese (lactose intolerant) and my wife asked for chicken not beef tacos and enchilada. When the correct order did arrive we loved it. Our recomendation is that they should give the chef a raise and give the wait staff and/or manager the boot. Pros: Food, everything is good. Try the Chicjken soup a tasty meal Cons: Horrible service. Prepare yourself emotionally for indifference more

great Food, Horrible service 7/17/2007

I do like the food at La cabinita & I go to a lot of mexican restaurants!!! I have been there 3 times. So food is not the problem, it's the service, the service really drags this place down. they make you feel ignored, take a long time to come around to you. want another margarita??? forget about it. More chips??? better luck next time. Pros: food is good Cons: service is the worst more

BEST MEX IN LA...BAR NONE. 5/15/2006

I drive from Hollywood to Montrose 2-3 times a month JUST to eat here. The Chili Rellenos are the BEST I have ever eaten. Paired with the amazing chicken enchiladas in the black mole. Unbelieveable. So rich and chocolaty with the most sophisticated spices. The two salsas that come with the homemade chips are to die for, as are the soups that come with the combo meals. I take issue with the person who says the Chili Relleno are frozen. That is complete poppycock! This is truly a gem of a restaurant and I will continue to eat there, as will my children and their grandchildren. Period. more

I MISS THE OLD LA CABANITA! 1/4/2006

This was a tiny little shack when I first started eating there. The BEST Mexican food I ever had. Then they had to expand. This was done at the cost of service and quality of food. Ever bit into a half frozen Chile Rellnos? Neither had I until after the expansion. Typical long waits in the original version was extended to agonizingly long waits. And the quality of the food was obviously cheapened, you could taste the cheap cuts of beef and chicken from what was once the best. And to top it all off, after you eat all that salty food they take the liberty to charge you for any soda refills. Thats pretty dang weak if you ask me. $6 for a couple of cokes, PER PERSON?!?! Thats just sheer greed people. Most great restaurants take a turn for the worse after expanding...This one proves that. more

Neighborhood Couple 12/1/2005

Food was what we went there for and was as expected. Service was poor: We were a party of two. My husband watched the drinks we ordered at the bar for some time before they were delivered. The waiter had to ask who had what. When the food came the waiter had to ask who had what. We were given the wrong check for payment. We had to get up and hand the corrected bill with payment to the waiter and there was a real estate business care from the waiter in our bill -- TACKY. Like my husband saide, ""After that service, would you buy a house from this guy?"" Pros: food Cons: service more
