Best

Everything on the menu is excellent. Try the gator sauted or pan fried rather than deep fried. Try the pan seared grouper-outstanding. The gumbo is the best I have every eaten-not...

Worst

That Louisiane laid-back approach to life doesn’t exist at he Knotty Pine. It’s quick in, quick out. So don’t expect to sit back and “parler” too long. The authentic Cajun fare...

OWNER IS A BULLY 10/20/2011

I don't know about the food but I do know this. The owner, JOHN CAULFIELD, sat behind me in HS and he bullied me mercilessly. He would insult me and kick my chair and call me names just to show off for a girl named Rosemary LaFleur. I finally had to leave my seat at the front of the class and move to the back and my grades suffered. For years I let this guy bring me down all because HE WAS A JERK. I would throw his food on the floor. more

worth the wait... 10/11/2011

Everything on the menu is excellent. Try the gator sauted or pan fried rather than deep fried. Try the pan seared grouper-outstanding. The gumbo is the best I have every eaten-not watery and full of only okra and rice. The greens are second best to a certain Alabama man's I know. Try your salad with the onion mustard dressing and the bleu cheese crumbles. The Italian cream cake and Kahlua pie are very good. The only complaint I have is that the bread is so bland and tasteless-but at least you can use it to mop up the juices and creamy sauces from your other dishes. more

Our First and Last Visit 4/17/2011

We arrived a few minutes early for our Anniversary dinner out. We did have reserbations. It was our first time to the Knotty Pine on the Bayou. We were excited to go. We heard it was a bit pricey, however, was to be super good food, but, this was our anniversary and thought we should treat ourselves and have been wanting to go for some time. We were seated. Our server was friendly. The place was hectic and it seemed to have little coordination. We ordered drinks. They came and we ordered dinner. We waited. And waited. The server came past with an order for another table and just dropped off a second beer for my husband. She didn't bother to ask if I also would like another. She kept on going. Strike One! We waited. She came by. Asked if my husband would like another beer, I guess it is assumed the man always pays the tip and should have special attention. That is not always the case. Strike two! She did ask me if I would like another drink. It was more of an after thought. Strike Three! Now I am telling my husband to start deducting from the tip. She kept calling me sweety! I don't know why waitresses, cashiers and hair dressers have to call you 'hon' or 'sweety'. it is very annoying. I finally was fed up with waiting for our food and being called 'Sweety"" and let her know. Our meal dinally came. I ordered grilled shrimp. There were about 7 shrimp and a half full plate of red potatoes and collard greens.. My husband had the rib eye, half plate of red potatoes and beans. It wasn't the worst he has had, but has had many better ones. He said it was stringy and not as tender as it should/could have been. Will we go back? Probably not. more

Great Gumbo, Good fried food & hot sauce 3/31/2010

Cool old place with a slanted floor and a wall of hot sauces. The Gumbo is one of the best soup-like creations that I have ever eaten. Next time, I am going ALL Gumbo... plus some good beer and lots of different hot sauces. Everything is good, but the gumbo is great! Pros: Gumbo, Wall of Hot Sauces, Crawfish season Cons: OK cajun food, other than the Gumbo more

Charming 1/28/2010

Fun place to eat and drink. Casual, fun atmosphere! A place I will visit a number of times! Pros: Fun atmosphere with character Cons: Some seats are hard to stay in because of the crooked floors more

Great food and a great place!! 12/13/2009

Went with a group of 8 friends for dinner on a Saturday night in December. The service was great! we were seated right on time for our reservation and served speedily and capably. We ate the range of the menu from filet mignon to etouffee to blackened grouper. Everything was excellent!! The dessert menu leaves a lot to be desired but, honestly, after the excellent meal of generous portions...who needed dessert? I was comparing the evening to ""Heaven on Seven"" a Chicago area Cajun restaurant I've tried a few times - Knotty Pine is my favorite - hands down! Pros: Outstanding food and atmosphere Cons: a bit pricey / cigarette smoke more

Don't expect a lagniappe here! 8/17/2009

That Louisiane laid-back approach to life doesn’t exist at he Knotty Pine. It’s quick in, quick out. So don’t expect to sit back and “parler” too long. The authentic Cajun fare, albeit delectable, didn’t come without a price and neither did the “Abita Turbodog” either, at $4.50 a bottle. WARNING: Large party gratuity tips are figured at 18% of the total bill (including tax), not the subtotal. So you may end up paying around 20% in tips. Pros: Flavorful Cajun fare, spicy and hot (both ways) Cons: Pricey! Rushed! more

My number 1 request for my birthday dinner! 10/15/2008

I have loved going out to eat since I was a little girl. For this restaurant to be my hands down favorite really, really says so much! My birthday is in June, and I love sitting at the ""back porch"" tables looking at the hazy tree covered hills and the Licking River. They have a long sloping yard that leads down to the river, which is perfect to let the kids run for a while during our pre-dinner drinks. The ladies room always has nice, scented hand lotion (not the cheap kind). The service is not slow... it is relaxed and relaxing. This is not fast food, this is a dining experience. Yes, the floor is not always where you expect it to be, the screen door bangs way too hard, sometimes you have to wait for a table. Good things come to those who wait! I always have frog legs for my appetizer, shrimp scampi over pasta and Kaluha pie for my birthday dessert. It makes my mouth water thinking about it! I don't enjoy very spicy food but my husband does, so he goes for the Cajun selections. My kids are happy with the chicken tenders and a salad and playing in the big yard by the river. My dad always has a B&B ""up"" to savor after dinner. I'm full and sleepy and happy when I leave. Want off the beaten path of cookie cutter ""sit down"" restaurants? This is perfect, in every way! Pros: A special experience Cons: Pricey, not a quick dinner more

Great Food and Service 6/29/2008

This is not a huge place so if you want to be seated on a Saturday night make a reservation. We did and got a table on the deck, the food was Great i loved the Gumbo the most!!! Great service i will be back soon and hope everyone gets at least one chance to enjoy this restaurant....Thanks to all Pros: Great food Cons: Parking more

it took well over an hour for our main course after ordering 5/14/2008

We made reservations for 5:00. This is the time that they open. We were among the first to be there. From ordering our food to receiving our food it was well over an hour. We left as soon as we were finished eating and it was 7:00. The shrimp scampi over pasta is not even close to being as good as Pompilios. The steak was good. I have heard several people mention that they had good food here. I may try again and order something different from the menu. I don't think that the food was worth the lengthy wait. more

Awesome Cajun Food - Great Experience! Not for kids 10/31/2007

Having previously lived in an area where cajun restaurants were not in short supply I have not been to any cajun restaurants since i moved here. The food was GREAT!!! I shared my plate of food with my sister and was more than stuffed. Their raw oysters in a half shell are Huge and I would recommend anyone try them at least once! Choosing the safe route I tried their sampler platter - great choice - the gumbo, etouffee, and jambalaya were all delicious. I would probably skip the blackened chicken and beef in the future. As for desserts I didnt particularly care for any of them but i am particularly picky with desserts. My less critical friends and family really enjoyed the key lime pie. Atmosphere was great, service a tad slow, and prices a tad high, but all in all well worth it. Pros: Great cajun food! Cons: a bit pricey more

Horrible Horrible service....did not even get seated. Left and went to Pompilo's in Newport 9/26/2007

We made reservations for 7:30 for our anniversary and was told that we could have outside seating. We arrived about 7:15 and was greeted by the hostess/barmaid/server/seater. The hostess told us it would be around 10 minutes and that a table was just leaving and getting their bill. We sat at the bar area and had a drink. 20 minutes went by and I told my husband that I thought she may have forgotten us because I saw patrons leaving the outside area. I approached the hostess and indeed she did forget us and offered to buy us a drink and said it would be another 10 minutes. After sitting over and hour and 500 more ""just 10 more minutes"" my husband left and went out to the car. Just as I was leaving she said a seat was available. I went out to get him and told him the table was ready he said he would never give them his money and we were going to Pompilo's. So, needless to say we never tasted the food and never got our ""free"" drink. By the way, Pompilo's was delicious. Cons: Couldn't get seated after and hour and 10 minutes and was ignored by the hostess more

Understanding your dining area 5/14/2007

The food here can be HOT hence the (Cajun Name), but the good news is they have Steaks, Lobster and other choices for the non-Cajun eaters. This is one of my favorite places to eat. Here is why. It is tucked away in Kentucky off the beaten path. A quaint drive that let?s you know you are getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This helps set the mood for the evening there. Life seems a little slower here and this helps to unwind. The patio in the summer is a great place to have a cold drink and relax. The bar is small, and It can get busy on weekend and during crawfish boils, so plan accordingly. It has one of the largest selections of hot sauces in any restaurant I have been to. The Cajun food is very good I love most of what I have had and in most cases it seems very authentic. The Gumbo stands out, it has the most wonderful Smokey roux and nice spicy andouille sausage. There is a great sampler plate that let?s you try most of their specialties and if you are new to Cajun food this is a great way to get a good lesson on the genre. The Cajun lobster tail is quite good and unique, and there hot shrimp are as advertised they are hot. The sauce is buttery and similar to hot wing sauce but a bit tangier.. The prices are normal for the type of food they serve and the portion sizes can be somewhat small at times. The service in most cases is like the mood here and can sometimes be a little slow so if you are in a hurry you will notice it more than if not. The building is most unique. It is built on the side of a hill that is rolling along the Licking River. It has a rustic feel that many could relate to something closer to Louisiana. The Front wood screen really helps with this perception. As you walk through the main area you will immediately notice that you may feel like you have been drinking. This is because the building is uneven. This is all part of the charm that sets this place off from other restaurants. it is well worth the trip. Pros: Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Great Building Cons: Service can be slow, Portion sizes can be small more

not recomended 12/20/2006

Not friendly, over priced no childs menu, and hardly edible. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Never! Cons: do not waste you time and hard earned money more

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY 9/21/2006

**PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE BLOWING YOUR MONEY** The food is good the service stinks, the Kids menu is a joke and the prices RIDICULOUS. the average price for a good meal is 16 bucks, they charge 4.50 for a small side salad of pretty much lettuce, 3.50 for a small dish of crappy green beans, the ""SPECIALS"" menu is anything but; you save maybe 2-3 bucks, the drink prices are higher than average. It's a backwoods dump, that tries to pass of as classic Cajun, yeah the food is tasty, but not worth the stupid prices, and did I mention the service is bad, oh yeah and the prices are too high.....They charge extra for side items, but they'll give your kid complimentary ice cream that goes with their 3 choices off the kids menu yes I said 3 that's it, PB&J (who serves pb&j at a restaurant?), A hamburger (crappy processed patty on 2 slices of Italian bread plain, no condiments, no bun), or chicken strips (come on is that it?). Who are they tryin to fool the average person who isn't rich but is looking for good cajun should steer clear. My girfriend, me and my son walked out with a $61.37 bill for 2 etoufees (13.95 each), an appetizer of alliagtor tail ($10.95 for a small 6-8"" plate with some bite size pieces of gator tail set in etoufee ""RIP OFF""), 3 cokes (4.50), side salad(4.50), a side of green beans (3.50 extra, straight form the can no flavor, not included with meal), and a piece of cake (4.50)and a kids meal (2.95 don't get the hamburger) ALL IN ALL BAD SERVICE, BAD PRICES, BAD BUILDING, BAD PARKING, but hey they got tasty food COMPLETE RIP OFF Pros: Tasty Food Cons: Everything else including the price more

Highly recommended 6/23/2002

The food is great, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is wonderful. You'll more than likely get more than you can eat for less than you'd expect. The deck seating gives a wonderful view of the Licking River. If you love spicy food, you have to stop by. Even if you don't most things on the menu can be served with less or no spices. Stop in once, and you'll be back again and again. Pros: excellent food, excellent service, great value more
