Best Sushi service in the area. The owner is a sweet lady who goes to every table personally and welcomes people and remembers every face. The sushi is great and sometimes they will even bring special appetizers to the table! more

Nice menu, great service 6/10/2006

The first time I went to Kamakura, it was for a birthday party. At the end, the staff brought the birthday folks a special tray with special little sundaes and a golden tree on it, and free shots of plum wine for everyone. That's incredible service. They often treat a whole table with shots of wine or samples of something to try. The staff are all awesome, as is often the case at family-owned restaurants. The menu is also great: there are color pictures of most things, so you can see what might be in the sashimi combo platter or how the Raiders Roll is put together. It's true that it's popular and not that big, and that can be a turnoff. But the food is good and if you check out the specials above the bar you can often find toro (omg so awesome) or something equally special for sale. This is just a very nice place. more

Another Overrated sushi place 9/10/2005

Kamakura is very popular and they clearly have a crowd of devoted regulars. It's in a lovely neighborhood in Alameda which makes for a pleasant after-dinner (or before dinner if there's a wait) walk. The staff was friendly but sadly, the sushi was only mediocre. That's a terrible let-down when you've waited 30 minutes for a table. And if you dont live right in Alameda, there's too much spectacular sushi just across the bridge to warrant a trip here. more

Nice Neighborhood Japanese Restaurant 8/5/2005

Kamakura is a nice neighborhood Japanese restaurant that has been serving Alameda residents for decades. Kamakura has a typical ho-hum atmosphere found at most Japanese restaurants. I found Kamakura to be quite a small restaurant; there's only room for about fifty patrons. The food is decent, but nothing too special. The fish was fresh enough. The prices are typical for a Bay Area Japanese Restaurant, $10-15 per entree. The service wasn't anything too great. However at the end of our dinner, the restaurant's owner, Faith, greeted us. I believe she does this with all her customers, so that was very nice. I'd marginally recommend this restaurant. I believe that there are better Japanese restaurants in the East Bay. more

Best Sushi in East Bay 2/23/2005

This is a great little neighborhood sushi bar and restaurant, but so much more. The owner is Faith Yamato, a stylish Japanese grandmother who greets all her guests and keeps the place jumping with the help of many of her offspring. The food is great, the sushi fresh and prices very reasonable. Eat at the sushi bar - our favorite, or one of the many tables. The only down side is that it is so popular and busy that there is sometimes a wait, but it is definitely worth it. There are many other sushi restaurants in our town, but none compare. People come from all over the Bay Area to eat at Kamakura. more
