So disappointing 5/29/2010

Disappointing and sad on most levels with a few exceptions. We hear good things about brunch but this dinner was a big, big let-down. \r \r We went at 6:00 on a Friday. There was only 1 waitress on duty with 1 apparently brand new bus girl, no host/hostess. The waitress was running, but pleasant and professional, though slow because of being the only one. \r \r One of the first things she told us was that even though pizzas are on the menu, you're not serving them anymore, things are changing and you just hadn't printed new menus yet. Are you kidding me? Print the menues or keep offering the items until you can, but to just cut out probably a fourth of your main dish offerings with no alternatives - oh, just ignore the last page of the menu? Really?! \r \r Our appetizer (goat cheese) was very good, but the main courses barely mediocre and very disappointing. My wife's ginger-cashew-tofu looked great but the sauce was tasteless. \r \r I ordered the steak which was a mis-steak. I ordered medium rare but it came medium well, small for the price, hacked into uneven slices, dry, unseasoned, and tasteless. The ""bed of greens"" the menu promised looked like it came out of a bag and was a large pile, no dressing, oil or seasoning to be noticed, with the meat dumped on top. Even the steak knife was sad; it looked like it had gone through the garbage disposer, all the finish was gone, the wooden handle feathered and faded by too much bleach, missing a rivet, and the blade was bent! What's disappointing about that is the number of people, from the dishwasher to the waitress, who had to handle that knife and could have just thrown it away. Instead, it was shoved under the meat and pushed out to the table. \r \r Even there on the table, there was a graphic ad for ""Seattle's Best Female Impersonators!"" Just what I wanted to stare at during dinner. What thought process accepts that as an a good match for a neighborhood family restaurant? \r \r Years ago we loved Julia's; my wife heard recently from a coworker that it has gone downhill, and sadly, that was definitely our experience, which from the signs I saw, point back to a lack of concern by management which is carrying through the organization. We will have to think long and hard about ever going back to a Julia's. Pros: Homey, decent pasta Cons: Indifferent management, food prep more

Julia's is a cult hit 5/26/2010

If Breakfast at Tiffany's is a classic, then Breakfast at Julia's is a cult hit. Hidden in a quite neighborhood slightly off the busy 45th St, this restaurant offers a nice, sunny environment for great omelets and coffee. Very busy on the weekend, but the staff will supply you with coffee or espresso while you wait and read the weekend paper. Once seated things move right along, food gets served within 15 min, always lots of refills and if you are in a hurry you can be on the way in 30 min. just let the staff know and they'll make it happen. Pros: my favorite more

""weekend parental brunch solution"" 5/26/2010

It's the weekend and your aged parents are visiting from out of town. They have graciously allowed you to sleep in, but now its 11am and everyone's hungry. Assuming you're not prepared to do the cooking yourself, what can you do? All the brunch spots are packed and have hour-long waits. Julia's in Wallingford is no exception, but they do have something that sets them apart: their bakery. Are you going to make your feeble progenitors stand around on the sidewalk outside some other place for an hour? What kind of offspring are you? Go to Julia's, put your name on the list, and have a proper seat in the bakery, where you and your parents can begin scratching your coffee itches and maybe have a scrumptious pastry (I like the bran and ""morning glory"" muffins) or two. When your name makes it to the top of the list, the host will come looking for you in the bakery, and you can bring your coffee mugs with you to your table for free refills. As for the breakfast itself, I like the Desayuno Burrito with black beans substituted for the potatoes. To avoid clogging their ancient tickers any more, the 'rents can have their omelets or scrambles made with low-cholesterol egg substitutes, too. Then you can negate any healthy choices you made for the main course by having a slice of delicious coffee cake at the end. Pros: love it more

Horrible service 10/31/2009

I went here with a few friends for the first time today for lunch and we almost walked out because it took so long to get any service. Our server had no tact, and we had to repeatedly track her down to get basic service, and it wasn't even busy. The food was decent, but it wasn't worth it for the price and crappy service...a very disappointing experience. Pros: great selection on menu Cons: Crappy Service more

Great Food! 6/12/2009

What can I say but a great Breakfast. What a different place compared to the broadway location.... I go there for it's shows Le Faux & Vamps & Vixen's but I stick with Wallingford for it's breakfast for sure! Pros: easy parking Cons: cant think of any? more

Healthy lunch for a great price! 2/16/2009

My friend took me here last week for lunch, this little place was busy for a Tuesday, I guess people still have some money to eat out. Service was friendly and efficient, our lunch was delicious. I had a huge Caesar salad and my friend a Chicken wrap. Our bill was under $20.00, maybe that is why this place was busy. Why would anyone do fast food, were you spend easily the same amount for 2 people. I go to Julia's any day to get a good healthy meal for a great price. Pros: Easy parking more

Great service, Great food! 2/12/2009

I am always on the hunt for a great new restaurant to eat at. Over the weekend my friends and I went to Julias in Wallingford. The hostess at the door was very nice and led us to a candle lit table by the window. The atmosphere was very uplifting and our server checked on us repeatedly, not only to bring us an amazing bread basket with garlic, but also to refill our drinks before our food came. When our food did come all I can say is WOW!!! Not only were the portions huge, but they were incredible! I cannot wait until lunch tomorrow to finish my chicken dish. I loved it there and highly recommend it. My friends and I stayed there for well over two hours and our server still continued to fill our drinks. It was a great experience!!! Pros: food, local parking, great service more

Bad Value 1/26/2009

Julia's is a has-been, a restaurant once delightful and now a relatively awful place in which you feel the owner couldn't care less about the experience. We had dinner there, were sherparded to a small part of the restaurant, served by a nice woman who appeared to be hostess, waitress and, for all we know, cook. Rock music played fairly loudly in the background, the waitress was (sorry) sloppy and the both dishes we ordered were simply blah at best. \r \r We won't be back and suggest you skip the experience. I suspect I'll drive by the Wallingford location one of these days and see the restaurant is gone. And, frankly, that will be a good thing. more

Excellent Breakfast! 9/20/2008

As always I had a great breakfast again at the Julia's in Wallingford, great service, great people and plenty of options to choose from! Pros: Affordable, fast and great service! Cons: Sundays you might have to wait a little bit to get in :-( more

Loving the breakfast for years! 9/15/2008

I've been dining at the wallingford location for years now and I just wanted to encourage taking advantage of this great restaurant not only for its awesome food but the value as well. All my visits have been very good! Pros: This restaurant actually uses cage free naturally nested eggs!!! WOW Cons: Get there early if your dining on sunday brunch more

Dinner is slow, but breakfast honey is a smash!!! 9/10/2008

Somehow I find myself dining at julias not only for its amazing breakfast but more importantly its value! Typically I go to the wallingford location for breakfast and the queen anne location for dinner, they are two very different restaurants however but share the same ideals of service for the most part. I'm more of a naturalist and look for ingredients that are made from scratch. I'm always happy when I leave Julia's, yeah sometimes the servers are slower than others but heck at least its not corporate and your not paying corporate prices, being shuttled in and out like cattle. more

best breakfast 9/1/2008

Went today with a bunch of friends to this hangout. It was very busy, but while waiting we were offered to go into the bakery to get some coffee and baked goods while waiting. Their carrot raisin muffins were amazing. Got seated about 15 min after we arrived. The waitress refilled our cups immediately. We got our food pretty quickly as well, considering how busy they were. The portions were tasty and generous. Heard that Julia's has other locations in Seattle neighborhoods, definitely will try them out as well. Pros: reasonable prices, friendly and quick more

A stable place in the neighborhood 8/28/2008

My husband, and children have been going to Julia's for years. We have had breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner at this neighborhood place. Yes it is not a fancy stiff place, it is simple with its decor, but the staff is always friendly, very good with kids and most important very consistent with the food. The portions are generous, freshly prepared and tasty. Again nothing fancy here just a lot of good comfort food. And very reasonable prices, we can have a meal for 2 adults and 2 kids with drinks for under $40.00. Pros: reasonable priced, good food, very friendly more

I am hoping a owner/manager reads this 4/15/2008

Born and raised in Seattle, I have been coming to Julia's off and on for over 10 years for mostly breakfast and lunch. Lately, my sweetie and I have made a few trips there for breakfast and last weekend was the last time unless someone begins to care about cleanliness. I have always noticed it's not the cleanest place, but could overlook it, this time it all came together for me.\r We came around 8:15am, they open at 8am, about 5 tables full so far, I could actually see the across the whole floor, under the tables was food and dirt from previous days customers, it looked like it hadn't seen a mop in a while, dusty, grimey corners too..I accidently spilled a bit of water on our table and used a napkin to wipe it up, to my disgust the napkin was filthy (which prompted me to ""really"" look at the table) the table was crusty and dirty from other peoples feasts, and not just in one spot,. Our waiter was very kind and he noticed the whole dirty table without me even pointing it out, he cleared it all and wiped it down. The blown glass art in the windows is always coated with dust, the walls at the tables are always dirty and sticky with food, fingerprints and who knows what. After we ate, I went to use the ladies room and when I walked in, I stood there for a minute then pretty much walked out and held it, it absolutely wreaks of urine in there. I have noticed it before and just thought they were having a bad cleaning week. This place needs to be bleached down and cleaned up on a regular basis, I am wondering what the kitchen looks like where customers don't go. I am scared to eat there anymore and sad because I really like to go there. It also gives the feeling that someone does not care. Pros: Good Seattle place for breakfast/brunch Cons: Unclean, uncared for more

Poor service, blah food 11/15/2007

I don't recommend eating here. I've tried it twice, thinking the first time was just an off day, but nope, not going back. Food is waaaay overpriced. A sandwich is $7.50+ and it comes with fruit however it also only comes with one slice of meat (I tried the reuben first time and turkey second time). You read that right, one slice of meat. And not a nice thick slice of fresh turkey but a thin sliver that didn't cover the bread. When mentioned to the waitress just nodded and walked away. The restaurant is cold so we sat bundled in jackets. Also the waitress kept walking between our table and a column, taking a short cut to the table behind us. Problem was she couldn't exactly fit so kept bumping our chair and frankly her rear-end in our lunch plate wasn't improving our lunch enjoyment. But the food is poor quality, tiny portions for the price and not welcoming service. Too many other fabulous restaurants in Seattle to waste time and money here. more

Amazing Breakfast 8/8/2007

We just moved to Wallingford and our new neighbors recommended this restaurant to try out. We came here with our two children, immediately had crayons and a children's menu to color for the kids, our coffee came quickly as well, good and strong just the way we like it. The menu selection was extensive and very reasonable priced. Our breakfast was delicious and the portions were generous. Service was equally good, we will be back. Pros: generous portions, resonable priced, friendly service. more

Slow Breakfast Service, Horrible Omelettes and Potatoes 7/5/2007

We went to Julia's yesterday, it was my first experience there and needless to say I won't be going back. They were having a busy morning but the wait list for seating was short (we were 2nd on the list). Although they had multiple open tables, we waited over 15 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, we had to ask two different servers for coffee. People who were seated after us ordered before us. When our waitress finally did show up, she curtly said ""I didn't see you sitting there."" No apologies. \r \r We then waited around 20 minutes to get our food. In my experience, Breakfast should be quick. It shouldn't take an hour to get seated, order, and get food. \r \r I ordered a Denver Omelette and it was the worst omelette, I ever had. The eggs were thin and flat instead of fluffy. The eggs were so thin that when my omelette arrived it had a tear down the middle. There were too many green peppers and onions in the omelette and not enough ham or cheese. The potatoes were over seasoned to a point where they left a bad taste in my mouth.\r \r At least the toast was good, but how can you screw that up? \r \r Julia's is supposedly a Seattle establishment, but if you are want a good, quick, quality breakfast I would go somewhere else! Pros: Toast Cons: Slow Service, Bad Food more

The bakery is still good, but probably will never eat in the restaurant again! 6/9/2007

I used to eat here all of the time - big lover of the nutburger w/avocado + jack cheese, large salad bowls and desserts. Had hair in my food more than once but didn't stop my enthusiasm for the place. I had two bad experiences - #1 A birthday dinner of nasty eggplant pancakes with an overkill of red pepper flakes, very dissapointing - I actually called the manager and suggested they never serve again. #2 Delicious fish & salad combo, tasty but contaminated with hepatitis from some gnarly unwashed server's hands. I had to go get a shot in the butt!. The management apologized, but didn't offer to reimburse me for my meal and that sort of ended my patronage of Julia's. However, I still love the bakery and will snap up those scones any time that I happen to be in the neighborhood. Pros: Great Nut Burgers! Cons: Sometimes Servers Don't Wash Their Hands With Bad Consequences more

Great all-around restaurant 10/18/2006

The wait (to be seated) times on weekend mornings can be considerable, but the food is worth it! The wait staff is friendly and competent, and the food is made from the finest and freshest ingredients. The atmosphere is casual and easygoing--so, don't worry about how well dressed you are, or aren't. \r When it comes to the food: Voila! There are numerous choices--in the mornings--of omelets, pancakes, muffins, cereals, etc. Then, in the afternoons one can choose from the freshly prepared sandwiches, salads, soups and hot entrees. Finally, the dinners are complete with main entrees and side dishes at reasonable prices. \r This restaurant is your basic satisfying community diner, with a fine bakery thrown into the bargain. Pros: Fine food and service at a good price Cons: Very slow in terms of seating on Sunday mornings more

Avoid for Dinner 10/16/2006

I had been warned by locals that this restaurant was not good for dinner, but I gave it a chance anyway. Result: Mediocre to deplorable food and openly contemptuous staff.\r We were a party of 7 in an otherwise empty restaurant around 6 on a Saturday night. Service was fine during first half of dinner. A few ordered fish and chips, which was pretty good. Nice seasoning in the batter. Burger was mediocre. Chicken Forestiere was flavorless and the vegetables were over-seasoned. Portobello sandwich: the mushroom was way overcooked and had too much vinegar. First round of drinks were flat.\r Service rapidly spiraled into hostility around check time. We had told the server that we needed to split the check when we first sat down, and arranged ourselves to allow for easy check splitting. Regardless we were presented with a consolidated check, and when we reminded him that we had asked for it to be split his response was ""You know, people have paid this way before."" We found this response unacceptable and insisted he split the bill anyway as we had asked originally. He cam back to the table, having either forgotten how we had split our order (which is his job to keep track of), or having not tracked it in the first place. \r \r Prior to this I had also presented him with a $10 coupon I had printed from this site, and he said that since he had to spend so much time splitting our check (which he should have done in the first place) he was not going to accept the coupon. I told him that if time was an issue that I could speak to someone else. His tone became immediately arrogant: ""I'm the owner's son. there is no one else to speak to. I'm not taking the coupon."" And walked off.\r Later, as we were paying some of my tablemates had questions about the check, and he was rude each time. We couldn't wait to leave.\r \r To the owners: You might want to staff a supervisor for your son, or at least explain to him that heritage is not an excuse for poor customer service. Pros: Prompt seating; decent vegetarian selection Cons: Inconsistent food quality; hostile staff more
