I called ahead to order some Clam Chowder to pick up to eat at my desk. When I walked in I was ignored by two waitresses that walked right by me without even looking at me. A th...

What Happened to McCormick?s? Not God at All. 4/10/2008

I?m not sure what has happened to this establishment, but my meal last night was not very good at all. We actually left after the salad course. The service was pleasant, but the food was way off the mark. I have dined here many times before and had great meals. It has been some time since my last visit, but I will not be returning anytime soon. Our appetizers were nothing short of bad. The Popcorn Shrimp might as well have come out of a freezer and been cooked at home in my own oven. The Oysters were so obnoxiously large, that we had to cut them in half. We had to ask twice for bread that was boarder line stale. Our Caesar Salads were bad as well. With The Oceanaire and Willie G?s right around the corner, these guys better raise the game because both of those locations are far superior to what we experienced last night.\r Pros: Good Service Cons: The Food!!! more

Very Average 3/9/2008

I ate there last night and the food was very average. It was all cooked fine, but for what amounted to a $130 dinner for 2, we could do so much better. The fish, and we ordered one appetizer and 2 entrees, were all fine, very average though and the accompanying sauces did not mesh well with the fish. I doubt I would return. Pros: Service, Polite Staff, Solid, if unspectacular wine list Cons: Ambience and Food more

Decent food, not so great service--EDITED 11/20/2007

We went on a Saturday afternoon, seeking a decent meal. We sat at a table in the bar area, and it seems there was a recent influx of new staff. \r I ordered a Rainbow Trout salad, which came with walnuts and brie. When the meal was brought out, neither the walnuts nor the brie were on the salad. Our waitress seemed swamped with the two tables she had, but when she got back to us, I asked for the missing items. She came back with a side of walnuts and blue cheese. Having had to flag her down again, I pointed out the mistake. 5 minutes later, she brought me gorgonzola cheese. I again explained the, at which time my wife had finished her meal. I then just told her to not worry about it. She came back with the bill and explained to me the manager had been kind enough to take $5 off the bill (the salad was $13). In a decent restaurant, the manager is sure to come out and talk to a customer having my difficulties, and will usually take the item off the bill entirely. Realistically, I am not worried about having to pay for the whole salad-- just the lack of customer service.\r I tried to contact them through email, and no response.\r \r (EDITED)- Manager called and sent gift certificates to make up for the service. Explained that there were several new people on staff that day. I will try again. Pros: Decent enough food Cons: Bad service more

Amazing oysters, delicious martinis, fabulous appetizers & wonderful service! 10/22/2007

I have eaten here several times and 9 times out of 10 it is GREAT! We always start out with oysters and they're always sinful & the lobster bisque is something I never miss. Last time I was there, I tried a new salad. I don't remember what it was called, but it had little tiny shrimp & 1000 island dressing on it. My favorite entree is the wonton & sesame crusted tombo (albacore tuna), cooked rare. Every single bite of the tombo was devine, the sauce, the crust, the fresh cut of fish, the vegetables and the beautifully shaped pyramid of rice was aesthetically pleasing. The deserts melt in your mouth. I've tried them all and can't think of a single bad thing to say about any of them. Even my cup of coffee at the end of it all was perfect. Watch out though, McCormick's is EXPENSIVE! If you don't have deep pockets, I suggest coming during happy hour. 5 star munchies at 2 star prices! Fill up on a variety of snacks and have a few drinks for under $20 in the McCormick's bar across the hall from the restaurant. Pros: EVERYTHING! Cons: The restaurant is EXPENSIVE! The bar / happy hour is much more reasonable. more

fresh seafood 10/15/2007

My wife and I were visiting from San Francisco and a little hesitant about seafood in Denver. Surprise! Everything was fresh and very lightly sauced, salted and spiced. Good portions. This restaurant would do great in the Bay Area. We were hungry so even though it was happy hour we went straight to the dining room. Service was excellent. When we were done, it was still happy hour, so we retired to the bar, had a few drinks and oysters for dessert and went back to our hotel very happy. more

Oysters were awesome 7/12/2007

I ate here for the first time on a Tuesday night; and it was still a full house all night. Its a great little restuarant that was still able to handle our party of 6 in less than a 1/2 hour of time at the bar. The service was great, and the food was awesome. The west coast oysters were some of the best ive ever had, and the calamari was moist and delicious. The Ahi Tuna was my main course and it met my expectations, and had I made room, desert sounded wonderful as well. Definitely check this place out. Pros: Seafood freshness, ambience more

Fresh fish, good service, but average. 4/9/2007

I guess I'm a food snob, but comparing this fish house to others I have been to, it was slightly above average. There were almost too many choices on the menu. That made it overwhelming. \r The best thing we had here was the clam chowder. It wasn't too thick, and was more like soup than a meal. Thats how I prefer it. Go here for the chowder.I give it 4 stars. \r The pan fried whitefish I ordered would have been so much better if it wasn't soaked in oil, which made it soggy. That was dissapointing. \r I think the 2 other people at our table liked what they ordered, but no one was oohing and ahhing over their meal. \r The bread pudding for dessert was really really good. \r The service was fine, no problems there. I think Ill try another fish house next time. \r more

Great happy hour 12/12/2006

I was here last night and had 75 cent oysters and 2.00 beers. Great place to bring your boss or a good friend! more

Great Seafood & Atmosphere 11/14/2006

A great atmosphere for dates or groups. The waistaff is always helpful and accomodating. The blackened catfish is a must-have. The food is always prepared well. It's enough to leave you full, but not stuffed. Pros: Ambience, Seafood more

Great seafood 11/13/2006

Loved this place. Nice wait staff. Love the seafood. Went on a Thursday and was seated right away. The kids liked it so we will be back. Pros: kids liked it more

Best Lobster in Town 11/13/2006

Made a reservatiojn for my husbands birthday. I mentioned on the phone that it was my husbands birthday, she asked his name. When we arrived, we were seated promptly and given menus. On top of the menu it read, ""Happy Birthday Greg."" Very nice touch. Everyone was friendly, the hostess, the busboy the waiter and the bartender. The best thing about this restaurant is the FOOD. Absolutely scrumptious. The Lobster melted in our mouths. Mouth watering ""Crab bisque"". Fresh salad, great wine list. Pros: Great seafood Great Service more

Best oysters and cold shellfish in the front range! Happy hour is at 4:00 and fills up quickly, go early. 9/2/2006

This small, noisey seafood bar is such a kick. The cold shellfish is marvelous. The $8.95 half pound seasoned shrimp are fresh and firm and a real bargain. The King Crab legs are fresh, not frozen, hot or cold they are great. The hot menue changes with the seasons...always something new to look forward to. The staff is outstanding. Same folks time after time. Good place and happy people, esp. Tim and Jackie! Go and enjoy. Pros: Great fresh seafood, great staff, great service. Cons: Hard to get a seat at the bar on Fri. and Sat. more

Must Experience! 3/19/2006

You must experience Jax if you like fresh fish, great cocktails and oysters. Everything is fresh and the flavor combinations are unmatched. I highly recommend the Calamari appetizer and any oyster selection. Their cocktails ALWAYS hit the mark. Take any martini and you will be satisfied. If martinis are not your ""cup of tea"", try the mojito or jax cream soda. As for entree, I always take the fish special. It's always something new made with the freshest flavors for the season. The price is above par, but you do get what you pay for! Pros: fresh fish/oysters, innovative flavors, yummy cocktails more

Fresh fish - rotten prices and ambience 11/1/2005

Normally, I don't mind paying 20-30 dollars for a plate of food that still leaves me hungry. But, there needs to be some substance to the inspiration of the dish that makes me ignore the quantity of food sitting on the plate, or the wait service needs to be superior. Jax gets huge points for the freshness, but their dishes miss the mark in a completely uninspired dining experience. From the culinary dimensions of the menu, to the atmosphere and waitstaff, this restaurant is a loud, obnoxious bore. If you want to pretend that you are in a trendy New York oyster bar and don't mind paying top dollar for average food with poor service, this is the place for you! Pros: fresh Cons: overpriced, uninspired, dining more

Truly Fresh Seafood in Denver - WOW! 8/9/2005

If your a seafood lover, you have to try McCormick's Fish House and Bar. The variety is impressive! The Happy Hour food menu is a steal with a ton of $1.95 food items. FYI - they also have some great steaks in case you have someone in your group that is not a seafood fan. Do yourself a favor and make some time for this great established restaurant!! Pros: Awesome Happy Hour, Valet Parking, VARIETY more

Great late night happy hour returns 5/29/2005

McCormick's $1.99 happy hour menu starting at 9pm Sun-Thurs and starting at 10pm Fri and Sat previously boasted 12 great items They pared that down to 6 during my last visit in early 2005. I hesistantly returned last night and they expanded the $1.99 menu to 10 items and added two more sections of $3.99 and $4.99 appetizers. The $1.99 menu still includes the full size cheeseburger/fries, mini pizza, fish tacos, etc., but the brie app has moved up in the world to the higher-priced section. All in all, a great deal...you just have to purchase one adult beverage per person to enjoy the app happy hour prices. Pros: Nice staff, Great Value more

What a rip off 5/26/2005

I was shocked that those costly meals did not even come with a small salad. And the price of the salads were way to much. For twenty fives cents worth of lettuce they charged $4.50. And do not order the small caesar salad. That was $6.95. Not even a good deal. more

Happy Hour 3/20/2005

I think these guys have the best happy hour in downtown Denver. This is where I take friends for happy hour every time. Not overcrowded, there is usually a table open or a seat at the bar. The 1.99 appetizer menu is great, esp. for those on a budget. They have a nice outside seating area as well. I am not a fish eater, but apparently they have a great fresh fish menu as well. Pros: happy hour more

Go for the Happy Hour 6/1/2004

If nothing else. Yeah, there are food snobs all over, but I'm from Baltimore (we do know a thing or two about seafood) and there is nothing wrong with the food here. Quite the opposite. I like the happy hour menu, where you can get $1.99 appetizers at the bar. If you are hung up about money, you can't go wrong here. The happy hour is quite fun. Looking forward to the new location in DTC. Pros: Happy Hour more

Pricey, but great fun! 1/2/2004

Went to Jax on for after-work drinks on payday (thank goodness!) There were oysters for $0.75 a piece, but that's where the deals stopped! Three of us spent over $90 in just two hours! But the scene was great and the bartender was friendly (he made an EXCELLENT dirty martini!) Pros: Martinis!, Oyster specials, Good scene Cons: Pricey more
