Both times, I've left the Freighthouse location disappointed about the size of my portion for the price. Last week at lunchtime the brisket was fatty and flavorless, however the pulled pork was delicious. And I always like the original sauce. But even so, my serving was so scant.\r \r I have been to the Plaza location twice also, and if I had to choose one over the other, I would say the Plaza location is better in terms of food quality. The atmosphere is pleasant in both; the service similar is similar. Next time I want BBQ though, I'm going to Dickey's where I can get better food for less money. more

Watch out for the chicken! 6/27/2010

I have grown up appreciating the Fiorella bbq restaurants, so I was extremely disappointed when my family and I went to this one in the freight district for dinner one evening. We had been there for lunch prior to this experience.\r \r I ordered the flattened chicken. It was served to me while still bleeding. I kid you not. It had bloody juices running out of it. I sent it back once, but it was brought back to me about 15 minutes later in just about the same shape. Pretty disgusting, not to mention dangerous. When I finally was able to get the attention of our waitress, she took my plate away and that was it! I never was offered a substitute or reduction in our check. I was just plain tough outta luck. No dinner for me! \r Then, we had a gift card which we were using to pay for the meal. Our tab was about $8 less than the card's value. Guess what? They don't give change! We (or rather, our son who paid for the card) were just plain out of the $8, while I guess Jack Stack pocketed the difference. Just doesn't seem right, on top of one of us not being able to eat a meal there, unless I wanted to sink my teeth into raw chicken. \r Have not been back since and I don't know if we ever will go back. Just a bad experience, after all these years of hearing about and actually liking Jack Stack sandwiches, etc. I guess if you stick to the brisket, etc. you will be okay. But please, stay away from the raw flattened chicken! Pros: Freight house area, good beans and cole slaw Cons: too busy to pay attention, RAW CHICKEN!! more

Best BBQ on EARTH!!! 8/26/2009

This is the one. The absolute best on the planet. I love BBQ. It's actually a significant reason why I've never moved out of KC. I eat here every chance I get. Try it for yourself. I don't know how they do it. It's just meat, right? Put a little sauce on it and put it on the fire. How hard can it be? Nope. These people have elevated the art. It's famous for a reason. Pros: Tender, succulent, fatty, flavorful Cons: Non-Trivial Risk of Death more

Best Ribs in America 2/15/2009

Jack Stack is a remarkable dining experience. The ribs are absolutely to die for. The staff makes you want to come back day after day. Pros: Ambience, Staff, Food, Service more

Extremely Good upscale BBQ! 2/12/2009

After asking around for the best restaurant in the area, the consensus pointed me in the direction of Jack Stack BBQ. Although fancier than any other rib place I've been to before, they really delivered on taste and value. Being my first time, I decided to play it safe and going with the sampler (jack's best) with a side of beans and cheesey corn. Everything on the sampler (ribs and burnt ends) was excellent. The sauce, the smoke, etc... all melded together. Although skeptical of the cheesey corn, it proved to be a winner...especially in tandem with the beans. The ribs definitely made my Top 5 for barbecue...and I'll be sure to stop by the next time I'm in town. Pros: BBQ, Cheesey Corn, Beans, Service, Value, Ample Parking Cons: Portions can be larger. more

Chain store does the best BBQ in KC? 12/26/2008

Alright, I haven't been to Oklahoma's joe, which I heard is the best in KC. So, while it is often the hole in the wall restaurants that does the best, I found the best BBQ so far to be found at this slightly upscale chain. They own the Burnt ends and they have the best beans in KC. I loved their beef ribs (and many places in KC don't do Beef Ribs) and their brisket is very tender.\r \r While I don't like to support the 800 lb gorilla, there is a reason why Jack Stack is the biggest in KC. It is great and consistent in their great quality. Pros: Their BBQ is great! Cons: Non BBQ is average. more

BEST BQ in US 10/29/2008

Martin City Location\r \r This BQ Rest has several locations in KC.\r Go to original Martin City Location. This is my number one BQ rest in US. \r Friendly, effecient service.\r \r Best BQ Beans, great slaw, and BURNT ENDS are incredible!!!!!!!!!!!\r \r All BQ meats are excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\r \r This place has no equal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\r \r Wordsdo not do this place justice.\r \r Sal Lick in Texas and Bessengers in Charleston S.C. are distant second to this place\r \r The other KC locations are ok but the BQ pits at the original Martin City location have years of flavor that can not be duplicated at newer locations\r WoWWWWWWWWWWWW what a meal!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: BQ Meats, Burnt Ends, BQ Beans, slaw, staff Cons: If you do not eat here you lare mssing one of the BEST IN US more

OMG, the ribs!! And a really nice atmosphere, very friendly. 5/18/2008

\r I had eaten at a few other BBQ places in KC and was told to try this one but wasn't too hot about it because it was in the Plaza and I thought it might be snooty or just have average food. So we got there hoping to meet our party who hadn't shown up yet. We asked for a table for 9 and was told 30-45min but she would try to get us in much sooner and we got those little vibrating thing to take with us. We definetly didn't wait more than 15min and our party showed up by that time. The front staff was so sweet and we were seatedright away. Nice big menus to our table, we had a really sweet waitress who was funny and even though it was a sat nite at 9pm she still had a great attitude. \r \r The menus are huge, 2 of us got the beef ribs which were about $27 and one of us got their combo BBQ plate which was only $18, we got buffalo wings for appetitzers. The beef rib plate was gigantic!! I finished mine but nearly passed out, nobody finished their plates and everyone was amazed by their food. We all had booz too. I got a really delicious Merlot for $8 per glass, others got wine too and we got some beers. \r \r It was really romantic, and some areas were really dim lit and some were lighter and there was plnety of space for intimate or large groups. Pros: Amazing food with a really good service and a romantic area. Cons: Our waitress didn't know her wines more

Awesome Prime Rib 5/11/2008

On a business trip, I had went to another place the day before for BBQ. I was told this place is awesome too, but just wasn't in mood for another night of BBQ. Seeing that they had Prime Rib, I decided to walk to this place and try it. Was not a mistake. The prime rib is hickory smoked and then they finish it off how you like it. It had great flavor and didn't need any horseradish or au jus, although the latter acompanied it. Their loaded baked potato was very good and I ordered their creamed corn that they are noted for. Was very very good.\r \r Next time I'm in town, I plan to try their BBQ. The place is nice on the inside of an old brick building that houses three different types of food, including Lydias. Pros: Nice ambience, great prime rib Cons: A little pricy, but not out of line. more

Worth Every Cent 2/20/2008

I have been dining here for years, by far the best bbq ever! What is great is you don't have to like bbq, because they also serve Steaks, Seafood, and Salads that are incredible as well. Don't look past this place just because you don't like bbq, if you do like bbq, you are in the right place! Crown Prime Beef Ribs are out of this world! Pros: The food! Cons: NONE! more

tough ribs 10/9/2007

This place was actually very nice in all respects, except the ribs were tough as boot leather. Maybe I caught them on a bad night. The sauce is excellent, buy a jar, you won't regret it. The service was great, everything was great, except like I said, the ribs were tough. more

The Applebees of BBQ 8/14/2007

If you want a good date experience, a place that will have clean booths - this is it. My friend used to work there and was encouraged to write positive reviews to on line sources. So I wonder what the public is really reading.\r \r Last week when I went to get carryout it was cold. Cold side dishes, cold meat. Cold BBQ doesn't look so good. \r \r The good news is that they staff didn't rudely yell at me in welcome (like Gates BBQ in KC) - but the bad news is that they didn't great me at all.... I had to hoof it back to the kitchen to find someone to help me. They were having some kind of server meeting and the servers were rolling their eyes - so it made me kind of wonder. \r \r I'm just wondering,""what is the big deal about this place?"" \r \r more
