This place is a total scam. I ussually take my dogs to West Hills Veterinary Clinic but wanted to save a few dollars so I brought them to Island Rescue. What a mistake!!! There bedside manner is null and void. They treat u like they are doing u a favor and they are scam artists. They talk u into everything but what u went in there for. After spending over $550 for them to run tests the vet told me that they were not going to do the vaccinations. I consulted with my ussual vet at West Hills and he said that this did not surprise him coming from Island Rescue and that he sees nothing that would make him question not to vaccinate the dogs and that in actuallity Island Rescue was putting my dogs in jeopardy by not vaccinating them. I actually have the vet, Jacqueline Perkins, stating that she doesnt believe in vaccinating older dogs on recording from my phone, LOL my dogs have been there before they knew the ages walking in, they ran $550 worth of tests only to tell me they wouldnt do the vaccinations. when I tried to tell her what my regular vet had told me she walked away and dismissed me. SUCH PROFESSIONALISM. wow more

Frustrating front-desk, mediocre medical staff 3/23/2012

I've had the displeasure of dealing with Island Rescue for many years. I go to them when I'm in a bind and can't see my regular vet when he is either on vacation or the wait list is too long. Be prepared to wait anywhere from 15-20 min on hold to book an appointment. When they do finally answer your call, they treat you as if they are doing you some sort of favor. I only take my animals for vaccinations. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT allow medical staff to evaluate your animals condition. They are usually incorrect or tell you ""I'm not exactly sure"". Let's perform some tests or get some x-rays and take it from there. Unreal. Don't go ...AVOID like the plague. My regular vet at Amityville Animal Hosp is always a pleasure. more

RIP OFF!!! 2/24/2012

Ive had dogs my whole life and been to multiple vets, but this place has got to be the worst place. They have cheap services but tack on whatever they can to raise the cost. I've been there twice and both times has been terrible. Do yourself a favor if you care about your pet and pay a bit more for better service. In the end you will pay the same after they add on pointless things. I would not recommend this place. As you can see from all the reviews they are terrible and only in it for the money. more

Never Had a Bad Experience There 1/23/2012

I've been taking my cat to Island Rescue for five years with no complaints whatsoever. I have never found the staff to be rude, and the doctor speaks in a monotone because he has a speech impairment. So far none of our visits have cost over $85, and we are in and out of within an hour. If you want to see a REAL rip-off, go to East End Veterinary in Riverhead. more

Don't be fooled! 1/10/2012

This place should be looked into for fraud. We have taken our dog twice to try and figure out what his allergies are. I understand that it's not an exact science unless you take him to a dermatologist or get a blood sample. However, I've now spent $350 there and absolutely nothing has happened. Yeah, the $42 office visit sounds nice, but they have to pay their staff just like everyone else. So they find ways to add stuff to the bill and explain that these tests are absolutely essential. However, we have another dog and used a vet on the north shore when we lived up there and we've never heard of any of these tests besides heartworm treatment. I called them back after the second visit because when I got home I looked up the medicine they gave us and found out the $33 ear cleaner is for sale on amazon for $2! They wouldn't take it back so I told them they were about to lose a customer over $33. The woman said ""that's fine, you're never satisfied when you're here anyway."" Well, I'm not satisfied because I've spent $350 and they've done absolutely nothing to help with his problem. As I write this he's sitting next to me itching himself. I feel horrible and now I have to wait to see a real vet because money is tight right now. Extremely angry with this vet and I will never give them a good recommendation. more

Stay Away from island rescue in Bay Shore NY 12/6/2011

My name is Victor Cubias, I took my cat and dog about over a year ago to this veterinary clinic, for a general check up. Before they performed any services, I asked for an estimate, just to make sure I was able to pay in full before any services were rendered. I was told by the veterinary technician how much it would be, and I was informed it would around $125.00, and I gave them my permission to go ahead and performed the services given the amount I was quoted. About 30 minutes after they had taken the two pets inside, they were done with the work. After I asked how much was the total, I was told it was $305.95. When I asked why so much, I was given the list of things that they did. I was why I was not informed ahead of time why I was not told, and they had no answer. I even called the technician back and he told me that he had quoted me the price, but that he did more work and that is why the bill was so high. I got a little upset, and the lady at the front desk started to make a scene, and I was told that I was not longer welcome to their business ever. I said fine, but don't expect to get the remainder of the money easily. Just today I received a few calls from a collections company that they hired, and I tried to settle the ""debt"" and so far, I was the lady at the collections company named Kerry, and she told me that they are not willing to negotiate anything at all, and would rather report me to the credit bureaus before they would accept any kind of payment in full. The reason why I asked about the price was because I was concerned about cost, and for them not to inform me of any cost changes, when I was right there waiting was irresponsible. Also, I did not appreciate being yelled at and embarrassed in front of other customers that where in the waiting area. more

Ideal for those needing low cost s/n and vaccines 2/2/2011

I first discovered Island Rescue in 2003 while I was at college I found a cat and when I brought her home for Thanksgiving I had her spayed there. I called around to a couple of places before someone told me about I.R. Vets wanted 250.00 for a spay for a cat. Island Rescue...under 100, including a rabies. I see everyone complaining how unkempt and dirty the place is...well, a lot of unaltered pets walk through there, they pee, express their anals and poop all over. The place serves a purpose, a cheaper alternative if you want (and should) have your animals altered, low cost vaccines and heartworm testing...if you don't mind waiting a little while the doctors are pretty great and the staff works there butt off to get as many animals through their doors as possible. I had both my dogs altered there and where I plan to have them get their vaccines. If I ever need X rays or something more serious, I'd take them elsewhere, just because this place is more of a clinic rather than a hospital. Remember, pets are a luxury not a necessity, they cost money and sometimes you have to drop some serious $$$. more

Rude on Phone 8/14/2010

Called the Island Rescue in Patchogue on a Sat. at about 6:20pm...they are open until 7pm. I just wanted to get a ""guess-estimate"" on how much they might charge for a certain proceedure. They did not even want to speak to me. The vet kept saying ""bring the dog to an emergency vet."" She was very rude....and the ironic thing is that it was not a service that warranted ""emergency"" treatment...it was only a superficial laceration. I would never go there.... more

Cheap, but Keep your Pets AWAY! 6/7/2010

My pet cat had an infected anal gland, and since we were basically financially raped from the previous place that we took her to, we decided to heed our cousins' advice and take her to Island Rescue. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a terrible odor; the smell was nauseating and the waiting area looked dirty and unkempt. The wait was not that long, however the staff looked completely rushed.....it was about two hours before closing so I don't know why we were being rushed out. In the office (also dirty), the doctor was impersonal and very forceful with my cat. The doctor literally did not try to calm the animal or make her feel at ease. She took the animal, to the next room (within ear-shot) and we could hear her cries for over fifteen minutes! That was true of the other two pets that were at this place at the same time. When we got her home, her bottom looked terrible. Five months ago she had the same procedure at a different place and the procedure came out perfect. She also had blood work done, basically scaring us to death-mentioning cancer and leukemia only to wait until later on in the previous night to call us and tell us that she was perfectly fine. She was also vague when it came to giving her medicine, and failed to give us a protective cone for her. Listen, I understand times are tough, but you do sacrifice a lot when it comes to going to this place. True, you do run the risk of getting ripped off, but the comfort of your pet is truly important; make sure that your vet or vet assistant treats your pet like a member of the family. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Pros: It's Cheap Cons: Traumatizing experience for all! more

THE WORST 3/27/2010

DO NOT GO HERE - IT IS DIRTY, SMELLY, YOU WAIT FOREVER, AND EVEN THOUGH THE PRICES ARE CHEAP, THEY FAILED TO EVEN RECTIFY MY 2 DOGS EAR INFECTIONS. SO AFTER 150$ I STILL HAD TO GO TO ANOTHER VET WHO GAVE THEM ANTIBIOTICS AND DIFFERENT MEDS - ISLAND RESCUE OPENED ONE DOOR AND THE FLOOR HAD BLOOD ALL OVER IT! WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE! STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS - DO NOT BE FOOLED BY LOW PRICES, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR AND THEY FAILDED TO EVEN ADDRESS A SIMPLE ISSUE LIKE AN EAR INFECTION ON MY 2 SMALL DOGS! 1/2 STAR, OR NO STARS!! Pros: CHEAP Cons: DIRTY, SMELLY, BAD VETS, DIDNT ADDRESS SIMPLE EAR INFECTION more

Not one problem 3/3/2010

I have two runts one my cousin was told they would have to put down if he went to the shelter because he has so many health problems so I saved him. I used them before for a healthy cat that my ex kept but when it came time to bring my kitten with health problems that was another story. They explained everything to me and I was always well aware of what was going on they really cared for him and since he was near death went i got there the emergency service was great, I was at the emergency vet where i dropped 600 the night before but he only got worse. I havent had a problem and my cats based of their information they gave me are very happy playful and well alive. I have not one complaint. Pros: cheap, caring, saved my cats life twice more

Horrified... 4/4/2009

My mom and I went to the Patchogue office with our cat and she was given some asthma meds and a steroid shot. The doctor explained everything clearly and the lady behind the desk was wonderful. We called the dotor to make an appt. for x-rays two days later and he said to go the the Bayshore office at four o'clock. At 3:57 on the day in question, we called the office to ask for directions because we were about three minutes away, but lost. We were told they could not give us directions because they were closing and no one had any record of our appt. They kept us on hold until about five after four. Then we were told they found out appt. but it was too late as it was after four o'clock. We were referred to the emergency hospital in W. Islip where my cat was made comfortable by a great staff and passed away . The thing that bothers me is that the woman told my mother on the phone that if we showed up, they would not let us in and that if our cat was so sick, we should have not been five minutes late. Needless to say, we'll be sticking with professionals from now on. Pros: Great Patchogue Office Employees... Cons: The supervisor in Bayshore is heartless and unreasonable... more

I have been going here for at least 5 years and have never had any problems. The prices are totally affordable and they try to work with you when you have multiple pets. The care is excellent, I would receommend anyone to go there. more

clueless vet 1/14/2009

I usually dont complain any further than what I have already said at the establishment itself but this time I feel compelled. I brought my bichon to island rescue because as we all know times are tough and money is an issue. the people at the front desk were very nice and I am sure this is a great place for shots, spay, neutuer, and things of that nature but as far as diagnosing your animal and being helpful and informative I was completely disatisfied I will be fair and say it might have just been the one doctor that I saw but the man almost klled my dog. He was clueless to the point I had to ask if he was really a liscensed vet!!!!! He had no clue how to read an x-ray he had the personality of astro turf and I informed him more of my dogs situation than he knew even after examining her. Needless to say he deduced that she had a bladder infection (which would mean blod in the urine) my dog was bleeding profusely out of her v-gina. Due to the fact that I had a friend of mine with me who is a vet assistant we asked what about this and what about that the so called vets answer was duhh maybe I really dont know. so after spending $255.00 I left there being told wait 2 days for blod work and in the mean time we will treat her for a bladder infection . I knew this was the wrong diagnosis. The next morning my dog was near death. Brought her to another vet had I not brought her she would have died within hours she was diagnosd with immune mediated thrombocytopenia. She is now in critical condition at a wonderful vet who when I brought the x-rays from island rescue and asked him what is that his answer was not I DONT KNOW his answer was they are tumors. Waiting 2 days for blodwork they had back in their office THE NEXT MORNING !!!!! would have klled my dog. This so called vet needs to get off the doggie qualudes and get back to school !!!!!!!!! He should be ashamed of himself and stick to giving shots at petco! island rescue set you standards higher please!!! Pros: people were nice Cons: doctor horendous more

Not so great 9/5/2008

I brought my 4month old pit there pretty much healthy, when i left to work in the morning she was running around playing with my other dog and son, so we brought both my dogs there for check up and shots, My other puppy is 2yrs and already has most of his shots and has been very healthy since we got him at 2months old..Well bella came home from the vet thay say she has ""Giardia"" so we started giving her the medicain right away...about 3 hours later she started getting really sick, 2 dasy after which is today, she was practically on her death bed, we took her to Fort Hill Animal hospital in huntington, thay said they think they can save her, their prices are cheap and their customer services is great, they gave us alot of hope..We are still in the waiting period..she is still hospitalized..My point is my dog was healthy before going to Island Rescue..If you want an affordable vet got to Fort Hill 631-427-1655.. Pros: Cheap Cons: Your pet may get sick and they will deny any fault more

GOOD MEDICAL CARE FOR PETS 9/2/2008

I needed to have a stray kitten spayed...didn't want to pay hi-prices. My vet wanted $250.00....they charged $58.00. The only difference is you don't call for an appointment, you have to be there at 9 am and wait on line for a little while. The medical care was just fine, the kitten was great when we took her home. I have decided to keep her instead of returning her to the outside and will keep using Island Rescue for her medical care. Pros: much cheaper than most vets. Cons: Waiting on line and they don't keep overnight....you have to pick your pet up by 6:00 pm more

Unparalleled Emergency Service 5/13/2008

They are real animal lovers that went the extra mile in an emergency both over the phone and when we arrived. Pros: attentive staff more
