influenced by other 'highly recommended' reviews, my friend and i sought out this restaurant for a fabulous dining experience. well, our expectation was too high. yes, the environment was quite warm but not quite cozy. the lighting was a little too bright and the sound was bouncing all over the space. the food.....tasteful but normal. i was disappointed, though, that they used the same crust for the eggplant dish and for the apple tart. Pros: service, nice decor Cons: value more

Excellent Value for the cuisine 10/19/2006

My fiance and I have been on a mission to find a good Italian restaurant. PDX lacks in GOOD Italian food. It was so nice to find a menu that is not all pasta. Most of the Italian eateries in Portland have the same menus. We did the Chef's Tasting menu and we were very satisfied! The flavors were right on point! We've done coursed menus in NY and Vegas and you can't find a tasting menu for $30 ($7 more for 2 wines which were both very good), it was truly a great value for the price. Would've been nice if server knew more about the wines. We will definitely be back! Pros: Value, ambience, service Cons: servers knowledge of food and wine more

Good customer service, nice atmosphere 9/23/2006

We went here expecting "classic" italian food but it turns out there are only 4 pasta choices on the menu, and we were a little disappointed with that. We had the tagliatelle with italian sausage, which was good but seemed over-priced. The grilled baby rib eye was excellent, and the salads were okay. The hostess, Debbie, was extremely friendly and helpful. All in all it was just a little too foo-foo tar-tar for our tastes. However, when dinner is over, the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies with milk is highly recommended! Pros: ambience, service, chocolate chip cookies Cons: too foo-foo tar-tar, NOT classic italian food more

Fabulous Dining Experience... 9/20/2006

We finally got a chance to try Iorio last night and what a wonderful experience!!! The food was amazing, very carefully prepared and explosive unique flavors, we loved it. Two of us had the Chef's special which I highly recommend; two others ordered off the menu. We sampled a bit of everything and I can honestly say we thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Not the usual Italian place, no olive oil and bread which can be a bore, instead they started us with warm bread and an unusual spread which we are fairly certain was butternut squash and roasted garlic. Additionally, a plate of chickpeas, carmelized onions and balsamic (guessing here) was complimentary and it was yummy as well. Favorites of us all were the caesar salad and the homemade meatballs which were paired with tagliatelle pasta. We really appreciated the chef taking the time to greet and thank us for coming; it seemed to us that he was a very genuine person who truly cared about the food he was preparing. No stuffy attitudes or outrageous prices here, just wonderful service, food and ambience. THANK YOU!!! We will definitely be back! Pros: Great food, good prices, no attitudes Cons: ??? more

Fine Italian Cusine 8/25/2006

After a recent visty from Italy, we have been on a quest to find an authentic Italian experience. Our quest has stopped with Iorio. This place made us feel as if we were in a small Italian resturant. From appetizers to main course, we were completely in awe! Iorio left our palates craving more as the true Italians have done. A quaint, romantic atmosphere followed by the most amazing Italian food Portland could possibly offer. The Chef came out to greet us (that is an Italian must!) We will be back and next time with more people. Great dining experience! Many Thanks. Cons: Servers could use some customer service skills. more

Wow... We loved it 8/11/2006

My wife and I recently went to Iorio for our anniversary and it was an excellent meal. I would stronger suggested the chefs special with the wine pairing. My wife had the special which was a salmon dish which she enjoyed. I was also pleased with my pork loin wrapped in pancetta. Overall the service was good, there are only two servers for the twelve tables but they did an excellent job of serving our food in a timely manner. Iorio has only been open for eight months and I am anxious to see this restaurant evolve into its own special niche in the highly competitive Portland restaurant scene. We will be back as Iorio ranks highly with my wife and I and its prices are more economical then other highly ranked restaurants in the area. Pros: Chef's special, Hawathorne more

Needs more creativity 8/6/2006

My girlfriend and I both ordered the Chef's choice dinner menu with the wine pairing hoping for a leisurely Friday evening dinner. We were given complimentary hummus syle spread and chick pea appitizers which would have been a nice to enjoy but the first course arrived ten seconds later. The waitress then brought the second course less than halfway through the first course and our dinner started to feel like we were going to be out of the place in less than half an hour. We requested that things slow down a little. There was also no explaination of the food itself when it was brought to the table and it all felt a little impersonal. The food however was very fresh and well presented. So far we had both enjoyed the salad followed by the ravioli. The white wine pairing was also a nice choice. My girlfriend ordered the pork loin and I ordered the salmon. Both meals arrived looking identical in presentation except for the fish was in the place of the pork on my girlfriends plate. There needs to be more creativity in the main courses to feel like you are not getting a production line dinner. The red wine pairing was good for the pork but not the salmon. Finally, the dessert arrived and once again the dissapointment of seeing strawberries on one plate accompanying a tiramisu and strawberries on the other plate accompanying a peach cobbler! It stared to feel like a big chain restaurant trying to be a small family restaurant. Needs to try harder to bring me back. Pros: Could be excellent Cons: Needs to rethink itself more
