Terrible Customer Service 5/30/2019

I adopted my dog from here in 2008. My dog received vaccines and sick appointments for 11 years. Customer service has declined, and I decided it would be worth it to pay more to see a different pet provider. I did not like it when I scheduled a vet appointment then received an email that it was scheduled on another day and time 24 hours before the scheduled appointment I agreed too. Secondly, they overcharged me for a vet exam fee. I had to repeatedly tell the girl at the front desk, that according to their website (printed out proof from their website to show her) that I was overcharged. I also had to wait an hour even though o made an appointment. And a woman, who looked like a man gave me a snarky attitude when I asked her how long was the wait. She told me she explained they were short staff when she told me nothing. more

rudely treated!!!! 4/22/2019

not even a one star, we tried to help out the place with adopting a pet and the staff falsely accused us of having 13 dogs, so I asked where did they get that information from and I was told from banfield so I asked for the number of the person they talk with so I can clear my record I called banfield and they said they did not tell them no such thing caught them in a big lie after that they came up with oh we don't adopt outside dogs I said ok fine if that's the issue I understand I get something else so they still said no we can't adopted so with all that being said no service from me I'm done I was just trying to help them out but I guess all the story they tell on the news are lies too I guess all advertising is for money more

insane asylum... they dont even deserve one star 3/16/2012

This place should be closed down immediately. The receptionist was very rude & disgusting with lack of intelligence. I would not take the time out of your day to visit a place full of incompetent fools. From this experience I will no longer be donating to their foundation till the people running this are removed immediately. more

Thank Goodness for this organization 9/20/2011

The professional staff helped us place the mother cat and her 5 kittens. Though we had grown attached to the family we aided, it was time to find homes for them. These healthy, well socialized cats were gently and lovingly taken in and put on the website of the Houston Humane Society for adoption. It is such a relief to know that they will not be euthanized for lack of space. Thanks to Cecilia for her kindness and caring. more

Dog Died after being neutured 8/10/2011

I took my dog to get neutered last Saturday, only for him to die from complications 4 days later. I'm not sure what could have gone wrong. When I went to pick up my dog on Saturday, my dog was the only one that they had to keep overnight due to a hematoma that formed during/shortly after the surgery. The next day, I was informed that I could pick him up and that he would be "bruised" for a couple of weeks. His scrotum was the size of a softball and his entire groan area was swollen and bruised. I was given pain medicine (no antibiotics) and told that he would be better in a few weeks. I folllowed all of the aftercare instructions and even though my dog didn't seem himself, I trusted that he would get better and I just continued to monitor him. When I arrived home this evening, I found my dog laying in his kennel, struggling to breathe, his tongue was white and he was limp as I lifted him up, I immediately rushed him to emergency, but he died in my arms, right before I made it. When I arrived at the vet, they informed me that he'd passed away and that the results of his neutering surgery was all but normal. They asked if I was given antibiotics at his release, and I regretfully had to answer "No." I feel so stupid that I didn't ask a ton of questions and that I trusted what was told to me. I will never do that again. I would have rather spent the extra money to ensure that my dog's surgery was completed properly. My dog Jack was a part of the family and it's difficult to write this, but I'm not sure what may have happened and I just needed to express my thoughts.....I am in despair. Hopefully, no one else will have to go through this. RIP Jack, we'll miss you. :( more

Go to CAP on Katy Freeway 10/16/2010

Our dog died within a week. Our vet said he had not had great luck with dogs that came from there and they strongly recomeded CAP on the Katy Freeway. We had adopted from there before. Dog was in great health and already house trained. So I would go there next time. more

INHUMANE SOCIETY 9/22/2010

HORRIBLE PLACE!!! Do your research beyond just the reviews (positives were likely posted by their own staff). The place is out of control and needs to be taken over by responsible people. Board of directors need to be replaced also. It is despicable and an embarrassment to the City of Houston, but more importantly, it is a hell-hole for thousands of innocent animals who cannot fend for themselves. I would never take a stray to them.....EVER! more

Wouldn't adopt here, very frustrating 5/24/2010

My husband and I went to the Humane Society on a Sunday to look for a dog. We had never been before, but decided to make the 45 minute drive after researching online the dogs we thought we would like, their hours on Sunday, what the cost would be to adopt, etc. You walk in and can look at small dogs through multiple glass rooms that surround a central room. The problem with this is you can only see the dog’s bottoms when something is going on in the central room and that is drawing their attention. So we saw 2-3 that we thought we might like, but since you really couldn’t see them well it was hard to narrow it down from there. You are not allowed to go into the central room (and various other areas of the complex) without filling out an adoption application a posted sign says. So we proceed to the info desk were there are 3 staff members – 1 on the phone, 1 playing with a camera, and 1 with her back to us. We notice a sign in sheet and sign in – note at this point no one has even acknowledged we were there. We stand there a few more moments and the lady with her back to us finally turns around and asks what we need – note also this is after a few minutes that the lady on the phone staring right at us and the guy playing with the camera haven’t even said “we will be with you in a moment.” We explain to the lady that we would like to view dogs in the area near the reception desk. She tells us we need to fill out an application form on a computer they have set up. We proceed to do so – note the computer system is not user friendly and is rather lengthy (15-20 mins to fill out). After filling this out we go to the front desk again per the instructions and are ignored for another few minutes. When finally the red/blond haired woman (or should I say pink/blonde) asks us what we need – note we were just up their 15 mins ago and this was not a busy morning. She finally pulls up our application and says that we are not approved because it is Sunday and she cannot contact our vet and we do not have our vet rec more

When we were new to Houston (Houstonian for almost a yr now!) we didnt know where to take our dogs so we looked up the Humane Society. They did a great, caring job. I'm pleased! more

Dr. Harkness is wonderful! 11/5/2009

My pup was tested heartworm positive and most vets estimated $1200.00 for treatment! Dr. Tim Harkness not only treated my dog for heartworms for under $200 dollars he also properly explained every step as well as went ahead and waived the doctors fee and heartworm testing fee after finding out that we were charged $500 for a regular exam by a vet in Sugar Land. The staff member (Mike) who assisted us was wonderful and knowledgeable about the treatments that my dog will be going through. All in all I am very happy with the Humane Society Wellness clinic and big thank you to Dr. Harkness and his staff for making my dog all better again! more

Wrong Surgery on Kitten 11/1/2008

We had our two kittens taken in to be spayed. When we went to pick them up, one of them had bandages on her paws. They had declawed her! They had gotten her mixed up with another cat (which seems pretty hard since both my kittens were in the same carrier). They then blamed it on the the adoption organization that brought the animals in. They basically changed my kitten's life forcing her to be an inside cat. Five seconds of checking would have stopped this. Never again will I use this facility. more

Great service 11/17/2005

Although this is not close to home (30 minutes away), it will save you a lot of money! I bring my dog here all the time. At first we went to PetsMart to check out how much the shots will cost including a neutering. Yeah. We saved over half with the Houston Humane Society. The staff is nice and very knowledgeable about animals. It smells like dogs there but that's because there's a lot of dogs and other animals. more
