Never ever book this hotel 10/27/2010

We visited the Hotel Carter on 22-25 October 2010 more

Don't you ever ever ever think to stay in this place!!! 5/5/2010

This place not even qualify for 1 star. My borther and I went to NYC for a fun weekend because we were gonna get together with some old friends and also he wanted to visit the city. His birthday was on that weekend so he wanted to have some fun for his 21 brithday, but as soon as we walked in I knew something wasnt right. I mean we are young and we arent fuzy at all but this place was really nasty. When we walked into the room first place i checked was the bed wasn't dirty but i found hair by the pillows, second place was under the bed guess what i found? half of a muffin that was there probably few months old and a pair of socks. They advertise the Hotel has a nice view to times square but the only view i had was a whole bunch of trash bags and a ugly, dirty and old Air Conditioners from the others room. I was like WTF what i have done. I felt so bad because my brother was hoping to see the city thru the window. I mean if you dont want to ruin your vacation PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS FVCKING PLACE. HOTEL CARTER IS HELL ON TIMES SQUARE NY. THE CITY SHOULD CLOSE THIS PLACE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I WOULD RATHER SLEEP ON MY CAR OR STAY IN A NICE PLACE OUT THE CITY FOR THE SAME PRICE AND DRIVE OR TAKE THE SUB TO THERE. I TOOK PICTURES AND I WISH I COULD UPLOAD SOME OF THEM SO YOU PEOPLE CAN SEE HOW REALLY THE ROOMS ARE. Pros: Disgusting, dirty, ugly and worst service ever. more

NEVER EVER STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7/2/2009

I feel horrible for trying to let me and my family to stay here. my apartment was getting painted and my family was visiting so i wanted to show them nyc and since this was the cheapest and closlest to times square i decide to book it. when we got there it took this asian lady 20 mins to even notice us after check in we go into the rooms right we open the door a A VERMIN across the floor. in the bath tub we found 4 INSECTS actual THINGS in the sheets the sheets were dirty were god only knows what after 10 mins we ran out i didnt even want my refund it was so disgusting please never ever stay here i even noticed """"working women"""" in this place how can you have people like that with children around this is digusting the mayor should do something about this place close it down anything Pros: cheapest rates in nyc Cons: EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!! more

WORST PLACE ON EARTH 8/5/2008

I am a 20 year old girl who went there with my 19 year old sister. We had no money so that was all we could afford. We had book for 4 nights over the internet. When we arrive. They had lost out booking and the $450US we had paid (which we never got back), and we were forced to pay cash to stay there one night - which we did. Pros: Location - close to everything Cons: EVERYTHING - ABSOLUTE FILTH more

Hells Hotel, St%pid Staff, New Yorks Dump !!!! 8/1/2008

When you visit New York please do not stay on this fking dump, please stay away from this shthole, New York is full of great hotels there is no room service, there is no cleaning (you have to do the cleaning if you want), when you arrive to the hotel it looks like a drg house (maybe the asian btch that administrate this dump sales), DONT GET NEAR THIS HOTEL, SAVE YOURSELF FROM THIS HOTEL, IF YOU DONT HAVE A HOTEL ON NEW YORK, STAY AND SLEEP ON A STREET BUT NOT ON THIS HOTEL, AVOID THIS HOTEL. Pros: no Cons: evreything more

Time warp back to East Berlin in 1970s 9/22/2007

Truly a real dump! Not chic or campy, no...the Carter is a five star world-class dump. Greeted by a inattentive staff with well-developed rudeness and the stay went downhill from there. Room was wall to wall mattress in the hotel's ruse to label the room a double. Decorated with dated carpet squares on the wall the place is bizarre! Our bathroom is hard to rate. I've been in cleaner public facilities in Tiajuana 40 yrs ago. Given a street side room. Ugh, Noisy!! (43rd Ave on a Friday night simply doesn't quite down). Again, this hole is $150.00 a night! Proof in New York that one doesn't need to see a gun to get robbed. Avoid. Sleep in the subway or join the homeless fellow on the sidewalk just outside the Carter. On second thought, he may not be homeless at all but only prefers sleeping outside for free instead of getting fooled into staying inside at the Carter! more

TERRORIFIC PLACE ..............STAY AWAY 9/2/2007

I couldn't save myself and my family from going, but I can save you from being Carter's victim! Please don't let them mislead you with the great location and quite decent pictures in their Website: they take advantage because that way you are not able to smell the terrible smell in those creepy corridors, sleep in those dirty rooms where you run into other guests such FLEAS ETC, or to deal with its unfriendly personnel. more

Abused, lied to and stolen from BY THE STAFF 6/21/2007

I checked into this hotel alone about 6:00 pm, put my suitcase in the room and left to have dinner. When I returned at 10:00 pm, I noticed that in my absence someone had been in my bathroom and defecated in the toilet and left without flushing!! When I told the desk clerk, his response was, ""Why was someone in your room?"" (Exactly my question to you, Hotel Carter). When I told the ""security guard"", his response was ""What do you want me to do? It's late."" I checked out immediately. I went back the next morning to ensure that my credit card wouldn't be charged. The desk clerk told me that the charge slip was ripped up when I checked out. Three days later, $232 in charges appeared on my credit card for two nights stay at the Hotel Carter. Calls to the manager Abdul (no one knows his last name) have gone unanswered. For the cheap price, I didn't expect luxury but I did expect to feel safe. And I don't expect to be charged for a room that I didn't stay in and then to be lied to about it repeatedly. The behavior of the staff of the Hotel Carter both on that night and since then has been criminal - they stole money from me as surely as if they had gone into my wallet. Steer clear! Cons: Staff, security issues more

Hotel Carter New York - Manhattan 5/22/2007

The worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Just there for a 3 day class. Sorry I didn't have a chance to look for and read reviews before we went there. We would have found something else. The location is wonderful. If you're wanting to walk around, it's right at Times Square - walking distance to the theatres and restaurants. The good thing (after now reading some of the older reviews) is that we did not see any insects or rodents. The staff was the worst. Not a single staff person was nice or friendly. They DO NOT clean your room at all. We asked, after the 1st day when we returned and found the room just as we left it, when would they be cleaning our room. They told us they clean them every other day. We checked in on Wed. and left Mon. They NEVER cleaned it. We had to go ask for clean towels. Towels is pushing it as well. The ones in the room when we checked in were OK. When we asked for clean ones they handed us something that felt like a thick piece of rough paper. The good thing about them not cleaning our room was we didn't have to worry about the cleaning crew stealing anything. How can they steal if they don't enter the room. Our toilet wouldn't flush. We did ask them to fix that and they did. The cord for the tv had been cut and a little part of the coating stripped. We unplugged the tv to plug in our laptop. It shocked my husband. We told them about it when we asked them to fix the toilet. They said we shouldn't be touching it. They didn't care he got hurt. NO customer service or even customer concern. We will NOT stay there again. Pros: The ONLY pro is location and we didn't see any insects or rodents as others have mentioned Cons: Worst customer service - They will NOT clean your room more

You WILL Fear For Your Life! 4/23/2007

Please do not believe the good / average reviews! The Hotel Carter was hands down one of the most terrifying experiences for my friends and I when we stayed there, and we certainly don't consider ourselves sheltered. We have traveled all over the world and are not high maintenance, nor are we easily scared. From the moment we entered the hotel, we knew we had been completely deceived by the pictures posted on the internet; 100% false advertising! You will be lucky if the employees behind the bullet-proof glass in the lobby speak any English. Our bell boy (and I use that term very loosely) was unable to get the lock on our door open so we were forced to change rooms right from the start. The sheets on the bed were stained and we were not successful in getting them replaced. What was hanging from the windows was nothing more than faded thin sheets. The sink in the bathroom was rusted as were the exposed pipes on the ceiling and wall. The toilet flooded from the first use. The windows were not at all insulated, and even though we were on the 8th floor, we could hear the loud street noise and dance music from the club at the bottom of the building all night, every night for the 5 nights we stayed there. I could go on, but I guess what I'm trying to say is there is no amount of money saved that is worth staying at the Hotel Carter. In fact, they should pay customers for staying there. Pay a bit more and stay ANYWHERE BUT there! more

do not stay here...you are risking your life 3/24/2007

For your own safety, do NOT stay there. My husband is an NYPD detective who has gone there numerous times. Crimes occur on a daily basis. There are pictures of people who have stayed there on tripadvisor dot com. There are rodents of all kinds, and they have a serious bed insect problem. There are also bullet holes in the windows. As a New Yorker, I am ashamed that they would call this a hotel. I would hate for people to spend there hard-earned money on a place like this and have a bad experience in NY. This city is wonderful and there are many other hotels that deserve your money. GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!!!! more

Scary 3/15/2007

I stayed at the Carter while in the city on business, at the suggestion of a travel agent who knew it only by price. I can't argue with the price or location. Everyone who has commented postively on this place on those bases is 100% correct. Where else can you find a room in midtown for a hundred bucks a night? Pros: Location & price Cons: Cash payment only! Rooms tiny and ill-maintained. more

very poor rooms , not very helpfull staff, cheap for the area and cheap is what you get 10/9/2006

arrived on the thursday and within the hour we had changed rooms 3 times Pros: location Cons: the hotel its self more

would definitely return! 1/18/2006

i was scared by the reviews i had read on the web about Carter hotel, but now that i've been there i am pleased that didnt believe them. The hotel is not luxurious but clean with friendly and helpful staff. The location is amazing, you are next to everything u need. I definitely recommend it to budget travellers around the world and would return for a stay at it. NY is amazing!! Pros: location, clean, affordable more

GRREAT VALUE! 4/8/2003

If you want to visit the city but are on a budget, and want to stay within the attractions, the Carter is the best bet, location, value, private bath, huge bed, what more could you ask for. Pros: value, location, convenience Cons: no cable., noisy weekends more

For under a hundred, don't expect the W. 12/21/2002

The hotel was in a great locationg. When I first walked into the room I was very disturbed and wanted to go find another hotel. At first it is a shock, by the time my week was over, I had enjoyed my stay. The location is a 10 you are a block off of Time Square and you can not beat the room prices. I would stay there again if and when I visit to New York and I am on a tight budget. You can't beat it. The Maid Service is not good at all. They cleaned my room once while I was there 6 days. Pros: Lucky Star Cafe, Inexpensive, Great Location Cons: Old Hotel, Small Rooms, Maid Srvce Not Great more

nice price, excellent location! 12/18/2002

i am actually a new yorker, but had to find an affordable yet convenient place to stay while my apartment was being painted. although the rooms were a bit old fashioned, i found them to be very cozy and charming . also, as a new yorker for all of my life. it is great to see a true landmark building standing among the new times square!! thumbs up to hotel carter's great value and excellent location!!! Pros: value, convenience, location Cons: amenities more

Crappy, but affordable 10/24/2002

I chose this hotel because of the price and location. Excellent price, and right smack in Times Square. The room was crappy, but clean. The room had towels, but no wash cloths. I asked at the front desk for a wash cloth and the woman, who didn't speak perfect english said, ""No wash cloth. You have towel in room."" I was shocked that they didn't have wash cloths. Amazingly on our 3rd day of stay our beds were made and wash cloths were in the room!! Guess they found some. Overall, I would stay there again because of price and location, not because of customer service, etc... Pros: Cheap, Great location Cons: No wash cloths, Poor customer service more

I'll Be Back!!! 10/22/2002

I come to New York City around 4 times a year and normally stay at another hotel , but for the first time my resevation was screwed up and there was no other choice but to stay at the Carter. I must say that besides the lack of amenities that i am used to while staying in a hotel, it was a very pleasant stay and i am sure to be back...........with my shampoo!!!! Pros: convenient location, friendly Cons: Shampoo!!! more

stay away!!! 10/22/2002

I made a reservation on the Internet and when I got there I could not believe how bad the hotel was from any point of view. The bathroom had not been cleaned after a previous guest had left the room. The TV set and everything else were older than my grandfather. I wanted to have my money back, but an extremely rude employee at the counter charged me for one night anyway. The worst experience in my life. For just a few bucks more I stayed at the Best Western Hotel. Not even comparable. more
