amazing eats and impeccable service 5/5/2007

Was here not too long ago on a visit to LA. Loved the food and attentive service! The waiter suggested a great array of dishes. It was a quieter evening and the manager and owner stopped by for a chat. As for the food, our none-fish eating friends converted. A very versatile menu and a great spot when you're seeking to impress. Pros: ambience, food, service, parking Cons: pricy more

Great food and space with top-notch service! 4/26/2007

Went there for dinner last Monday (4/16). Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Our server, Yoshi, was very attentive (and seemed very busy, yet efficient) for a Monday. We ordered 'Omakase' and he did a great job of helping the kitchen pick the perfect meal for us. Standouts from the dinner were the spicy scallops, the salmon with fresh ginger and a kobe beef preparation with some out-of-this-world smoke flavor to it. A dessert tray featured 7 different types of ice cream, all very flavorful, surrounding a tasty molten chocolate lava cake. The management team has done a great job of putting together a very attractive, intimate (it looked like there was only 70 seats) and inviting space as well, all while providing an exceptional dining experience. My only suggestion would be to have a more thorough traditional wine list, but maybe that's my signal that I should get more familiar with sake, of which there is plenty. Enjoy! Pros: Food, Service, Overall experience Cons: Good sake selection, but traditional wine list is thin more

The hidden gold mine in Beverly Hills 4/11/2007

I love trying new restaurants, especially sushi. I have been to many sushi restaurants in the LA area and its hard to find one that can give you quality for the price you pay. As i arrived i was greeted with a warm and loud welcome by the staff. As i flipped through the menu i saw so many things and I didn't know what to get. My waiter then asked me if i liked sushi and sashimi. I thought thats an odd question being that i'm in a sushi restaurant. i said yes... he then asked if i had any food restrictions, i said no. he recommended the omakase. It was a 7 course meal a little bit of this and that and by the end i was so full and the best part was i didn't have to think about what to order. By the end of the omakase i was full and i was glad i got to get a sample of the 7 dishes that were inclusive to the omakase meal. Highly recommended great food and service and staff. Pros: valet parking, Amazing food Cons: I got full more

Great food, great decor, great service! 3/23/2007

I went already a few times to Hokusai. Since my first visit, Tiger always surprised us with an excellent combination of sushi and kitchen dishes. The desserts are also to die for. Last but not least, the atmosphere is very nice as well, beautiful modern interior design with a nice private banquette to take a date and a fabulous private booth that is enclosed in some sort of metal paneling, very dramatic. It was always a great experience. I can only recommend it. more

Greatest experience 3/16/2007

I went over to Hokusai the other night with couple of friends. And the food and service were awesome! Great atmosphere. Since it was my first time, I asked the server to bring over what they recommended. And each time the food was brought to our table, the server explained what each dish was, and they all tasted excellent! We started out with appetizers and salads, then on to the meat, and sushi! And last but not least ... the dessert!! We were so full by the time we finished up with the sushi, but when the server brought the dessert onto our table, the temptation took over and I just couldn't resist. Just like any other dish I had that night, they just melted in my mouth. So, wonderful experience overall and I can't wait to go back again. Pros: Service, food, atmosphere more

Dramatic decor, creative menu 3/13/2007

Dining at Hokusai is sense-satifsying. Though dark and cozy, spotlights make it easy to see food and each other, and high ceilings make it seem larger. The ladies room is beautiful. The staff is attractive, knowledgeable and energetic. I have food allergies, and the chef took it in stride to create beautiful dishes instead of just limiting my choices. I had salad, a variety of sushi, foie gras with eggplant, seared beef sushi style, a perfect cosmo and red bean cheesecake (half a serving is enough). Each dish was complete, delicately flavored and scented, with contrasting textures and sauces. It was an entertaining and energizing dining experience. more

Great Overall Experience 3/12/2007

I ate at Hokusai Saturday night with 2 other friends and we were all impressed. I don't eat sushi, and ordered the spicy chicken, which was out of this world. My 2 other friends ordered sushi, and both were very satisfied. Our bill came out to $57.00/person and that included cucumber salad, edamame, 2 bottles of Sake, 4 beers, and our main courses. The place looks great, the service was outstanding and knowledgable, and I can't wait to go back. Pros: Great food, not too expensive, cool ambiance, and knowledgeable waiters. more
