First off the Happy Price menu is a crazy value. Hokusai is definitely helping you fight the recession. I like this place after work for a few drinks and apps with friends and clients. The bar is open and bright and looks out onto Wilshire blvd. The Happy Price will leave you some cash in your pocket too. If you sit for dinner you have to have the Squid Pasta , Crispy Spicy Tuna, Dancing with the Stars ( Spicy Tuna roll wrapped with Albacore with Crispy onions ) mmmm, now I'm hungry ,,,The saute'd Jumbo Scallop and the Beef Wrapped Asparagus are also excellent. If you are adventurous the Uni and the Spanish Mackerel are killer. The Yellow Tail sushi is really buttery and there is an Albacore dish I had last week with onions in a ponsu sauce ( i think ) that was off the hook. This is a small place with a good vibe too, I hope you like it as much as I do. Excellent fish at the best prices in town. Thanks Hokusai Pros: Great FIsh, excellent Dishes, good Saki, good specials Cons: Sleepy side of town more

Hokusai is Hella Hot! 8/29/2009

Great place and awesome space in Bev Hills. The greeting alone is enough to make you feel great, but when you look at the menu and then sample the fantastic fare, well - nirvana. Seriously very fresh and good sushi and great people....I have been back many times...it is just consistently great. Pros: super fresh fish/sushi and great service Cons: Mid Wilshire if that is one? more

Helping Us Out during a Tough Economy 7/9/2009

I'm new to LA and like everyone on a tight budget. My coworker orders a box lunch from them a couple of times a week and it looked really good. We went for drinks after work last night and they told us about a new menu, Happy Price. I am a huge sushi fan and couldn't believe the great prices for a Beverly Hills restaurant. We had handrolls and nigiri sushi, all of the fish was good quality. Usually I hate Happy Hour, since the servers don't make good tips and you get lousy service. Everyone here was very nice and great service. The manager told us that they're just trying to help everyone out during this tough economy. We had a couple of beers, sushi, and other appetizers and walked out of there happy and not spending all of my money. I was amazed to find out that this isn't just for Happy Hour, it's all day long. On one hand, I don't want to tell people about this place and just keep it to myself, but on the other hand I know there are a lot of people like me who can't afford to go out and eat much. I was dying for good sushi that I could afford. I will be back to this restaurant and to help them out telling my friends too. Remember to look at the ""Happy Price"" menu. Pros: Happy Price menu, bento box, service Cons: Not much street parking, but valet lot more

Eat in and take out! 5/7/2009

Hokusai has long been our favorite for happy hour, with a great bar menu, silent sports TV and great talk. Now there's a new wrinkle -- For lunch and dinner, there are bento boxes available for $7 -- chicken, salmon, gyoza, sushi rolls,etc-- and prime accompaniments. Go for the drinks, and take home a bento box for dinner. It's a great way to have high quality at reasonable price. Pros: Great Bar/ Great Bento Boxes more

Grab your purse and run the other way 3/12/2009

I saw the reviews on LA City Search so was very excited to go here. I love sushi in LA and always love trying something new. This was horrendous. The service was good but nothing to back it up. Unfortunately the black bean sauce on the crispy compachi was so bad, I couldn't do anything but put it in my napkin. I hate writing such horrible reviews but I have to, to save others from the same bad sugary food we had. In fact we ended up paying the bill and running to Bond Street to get better sushi. Sorry, Hokusai, but I am beyond disappointed. Pros: The service Cons: The food more

Impressive! 3/3/2009

We're new to Los Angeles, just moved here from Chicago. We love fine dining and our thinking is that it will be hard to beat great Chicago restaurants in LA. I've read all the reviews for this restaurant and had to try it. On the day of our reservation, we received a reminder of our 8 pm reservation. We arrived early and they had our table waiting for us. The restaurant was busy and since we've never been here before asked the server what he recommended? He suggested that we try the tasting menu, forgot the Japanese term. We tried it, a couple of the dishes were similar to what PEEDLER had, but we thought they were great. Everything was incredible, the scallop appetizer had a wonderful flavor, the salmon sashimi with the tofu sauce and fried ginger was very good, and the Kobe beef was so tender. The sushi assortment was a nice touch and they do a very special sushi ball roll. It's like a California roll, but in a ball. I usually don't eat rolls, but very interesting and something that we've never seen before. For dessert, they put together a platter of different desserts for us. My wife doesn't like really sweet things, but she loved everything on that platter. This is only the 3rd restaurant in Beverly Hills that we have tried and I'll say that we'll be back, can't say that for the other places. One thing that I do notice about LA people, they order off the menu vs. having the chef put a menu together. Pros: Chef's menu, service, and dessert platter. Cons: Not an extensive wine list more

Best Sushi in Los Angeles!!!! 2/19/2009

It was my birthday weekend and I was looking for a new sushi spot to celebrate. So the research began... I first heard about Hokusai from the "Citysearch - Best Sushi 2008" List. It is ranked as the #1 spot in all of Los Angeles. I have tried many of the other spots on the list, but I never heard about Hokusai, so I thought I would give it a shot. I made the call for a reservation a couple nights before the occasion, and already I was very impressed with the service I was given. The manager, Tiger, was extremely nice and even made sure that my requirements were met to make my Birthday dinner a special one.. He even gave me his number incase I had any more questions or recommendations for the night!! Now, where else can you find service like that!?!? A couple days later, we arrived at Hokusai for the occasion and our table was waiting for us. Now before I tell you about the food..I must admit that I am a major sushi snob!! I only like the freshest of the fresh! I have tried sushi from all over world including the most famous fish market "Tsukiji" in Tokyo, (It doesnt get any Fresher and more authentic than that!) So I would like to say that I know my sushi very well and my expectations are extremely high. With all that being said, the sushi at Hokusai did not dissapoint one bit! It was extremely fresh, and definitely one of the best sushi spots in Los Angeles I have ever been to. I have already been back a couple times since my brithday a few weeks ago, and will continue going back as long as Hokusai exists! I recommend this place to my friends, family, and everyone who is reading this right now. If you like sushi as much as I do, then prepare yourself for a treat!! TWO THUMBS UP! more

Valentine's Day Nightmare 2/16/2009

Wow, where to start... I guess with the parking situation. The valet had given up by the time we got there (as compared to the other reviewer) because there was no valet in sight. We parked a few blocks away at a garage and hoofed it back to the restaurant. We were seated a little after 9:00. We wanted to get drinks because we were a bit early, but there was surprisingly no bartender even though they had a large bar. We were seated in the very unromantic bar area and ordered the 6-course Valentine's dinner for $80 per person (which isn't too unreasonable). There were literally about 20-30 minutes between each course as we received our 6th course at right before midnight. One of the courses we were looking forward to ran out and the waiter started asked us for suggestions to replace it. We didn't have a menu, so we really didn't know what to say. So we just sort of looked at each other for a while until he went and asked the chef who whipped up another appetizer. The appetizer courses were decent, but the main courses were pretty awful. I ordered the seabass and my girlfriend got the short rib. Both of us couldn't didn't finish our main courses because they just had no taste whatsoever. The couple next to us had ordered the special as well and after sitting for 30 there for about a half hour after their second course they asked for the check. I wish I had taken their lead, but I was hoping things improved. They didn't. At midnight, right after we got our deserts and 3 hours into our dinner, the emergency fluorescent lighting came on and completely ruined any remaining romantic mood that was salvageable. The worst part about it was that the waiters just laughed it off and the lights stayed on. Pros: I learn from my mistakes Cons: Food, service, ambiance, parking more

I guess that's the price of ruining our evening. Now I have to find someone I despise to give it to, because we won't be going back.
