Anybody who placed The Hilltop Steak House ahead of the likes of Grill 23 and The Oak Room in this survey has clearly never made the trip into Boston for a nice steak dinner. Every aspect of Grill 23 and The Oak Room far exceeds anything you will experience at The Hilltop; from the decor, to the service, to the food. The Hilltop Steak House specializes in one thing: bringing you heaping portions of red meat quickly. The steaks are simple but pretty good. Period. The Hiltop is a good steak house for those on a budget. If you are prepared to spend a little more money and want to try a truly amazing steak eating experience, head into Boston and go to Grill 23, The Oak Room, Abe & Louis, or Morton's. more

This was a great restaurant. Besides excellent food, you can also boast that you have eaten at the largest restuarant in the country. It seats 1000 people! more

10 years ago this was a great place for a great steak at a great price. Now if you just want a piece of meat? at a cheaper price, this is your place. No true beefeater would be caught dead there. more

the worst customer service ever! we were there for father's day a few years ago -- a baby was crying nearby-waitress said someone ought to stick a roll in its mouth to shut it up...that was after the 1.5hr wait we had to be seated...then they refused to honor our gift certs saying they had changed hands and certs had expired but didnt have notice posted anywhere someone 6ft or shorter would see...although we had the cash they made a public display in the lobby making us look like crooks...i share this story with everyone i know Cons: poor wait staff, long wait, poor communication more

Hilltop is a lot more enjoyable and has a better selection of food than any other steakhouse I've been to. And this counts for a lot: If you order a steak medium/rare, you're going to get it medium/rare. Oh yeah, and every time I go there I overeat =D Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious more

Hilltop sirlorn steak, bone in, is a steak eaters heaven. The size is large and The price is steadily increasing. The meat is tender and juicy with just enough chew and tenderness to satisfy most steak lovers. The flavor is a little bland but doesn't deter ordering it. The steaks are usually cooked to perfection. Rare is bright red, juicy with a slightly warm center. The medium rare is bright pink and hot throughout. The first bites have a sweet taste from the carmalized fat around the edges. The salad served is generally a large bowl of pallid green. It is nothing special! The hilltop dressing is flavorful but ask for it on the side to get it the way you want. The Hilltop dressing had been much better, too bad it is not the rich, creamy, grarlicy sweet dressing of old. Yet, it retains some of the flavor. Pros: good steak, clean restaurant, good service Cons: noisy, moderately expensive, lowering value more

The steaks are great. The other food is just ok. If you want a big steak, the Hilltop is for you. They know how to cook it too. If you ask for medium well, it comes to that way. My in-laws take me to the Hilltop for my birthday and I look forward to it with a watering mouth! I went yesterday and was not disappointed by the steak (although the service was somewhat lacking). If you want atmosphere, go to some trendy bistro; if you want a good steak, go to the Hilltop. Pros: Good food Cons: Spotty service more

Cold beer, great value, what more can you say? This place is the epitome of a great time. While waiting for a table, there is plenty of time for converation, mingling amongst the hundreds of patrons, and indulging in some cold beverage. This place is awesome! Good Old Steak House 12/19/2002

Only once on Father's Day did I receive a poor steak, and that was my fault since they were loaded with people. Otherwise, it is right in there with some of the bes that I have eaten at through out the U.S., such as the Palm, The Metropolitan Grill, etc. Pros: Easy to get to, Good choices, Good Value Cons: No reservations, Plain atmosphere more

You Get What You Pay For 12/19/2002

The beef is still the best value around. And the salad (if you don't require trendy greens) with its iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and onions is generous. The Hilltop dressing is abominable but the blue cheese and the others aren't so bad. The potatoes both mashed and fried are quite good but the vegetables are right out of a can and taste as if they've been sitting in a steam table for hours. But the real reason to go to the Hilltop is the steak which is still superb and maybe shop in the attached market. Not what it used to be 12/11/2002

About 15 years ago, the Hilltop was a great choice for ra easonably priced, quality steak. Over the years, the quality of the food has diminished. Depending on when you arrive, you may be seated right away, or you may have to wait (standing, in a long line, like cattle) for a table. Also, the service is incosistant. This is an okay place to bring mom, dad, the kids, grandma, grandpa, or Aunt Tilly for an average meal. It is not a good a good place to go when you want to impress someone or when you want a really good, classy, relaxed dining experience. Pros: Reasonable prices, Plenty of parking, Butcher shop Cons: Food is average, Too many kids, Service is average more

How can you not get a great meal from a place with a 100+ foot tall cactus? Juicy fresh steaks, right from their own butcher shop. But the best part is their HOUSE DRESSING!!!! I buy a case of it for home all the time. Pros: SALAD DRESSING, freshness Cons: crowds, crowds, more crowds more

Used to hate this place, long lines bad food to undersize portions (remember the Hilltop of the late 70's and 80's?). Went back once on a whim and was won over. Forget the bus station feel to the place the Steak is cooked well, the Cowboy steak is recommended. Waitstaff is efficient. Meal comes quickly and well prepared. You won't get any fanfare with the presentation of your order, but you will have a satisfying meal at a reasonable price. GET DESSERT!!!! Pros: quick service, big salad, location Cons: ambiance more

I love the Hilltop Steak House. I have been going since I was a little girl. The food is always delicious and the staff is nice and attentive to such a busy and demanding group of customers. There is always a wait, but it is well worth it. The food is fresh and they have a butcher shop and market where you can purchase groceries. For the best steak, I highley reccommend it. Anyone who would rate Hilltop as a ""best steakhouse"" probably thinks McDonald's has the best burger!!! Twenty-five years ago this was the place. Today it's rated highly only by those without palates or who don't know any better, or both. Cons: lousy steak more
