I am a hard working guy that works in the engineering field for an automotive company but in 2009 I had a psychotic break. I was suffering from Schizophrenia. I had visual and audio hallucinations. It was so bad that I called my brother and he decided to pick me up and take me to his house to spend the night. He didn't know what to do with me so he took me to the police station. The police sent me to Harbor Oaks Hospital. I got an ambulance ride there. I saw the psychiatrist once a day and they had group counseling with other patients and a psychologist throughout the day. A chance to go to gym class once a day as well as an art class. We played volleyball and other group sports in the gym. You weren't forced to go to any of the sessions but they recommended that you go. I enjoyed socializing with the other patients. There was a lounge with couches that the patients could go to talk or read and a TV room. I only went to the TV room to watch the news. I spent most of my time in the lounge or going to the group sessions. The food was great. They served us in a cafeteria setting with all the pop you can drink. I asked for someone to wake me up every morning so I wouldn't miss breakfast and they did. They gave us a chance at night to get snacks out of the snack machine after dinner and get pop. There was 3 phones that your loved ones could call in on. Someone would chase you down if you had a phone call or you could call out on them. The nursing staff was very friendly and seemed to care about the patients. The nurse that handed out medicine every night jokingly called me ""Bob Seger"". I thought it was cute. I was stabilized in a week and stayed for about 2 weeks. I wanted to get back home to pay bills and such. There was 2 patients to a room but my first week I was by myself. It was a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend it to everyone with problems. more

I have read the reviews and regarding some of the negative comments that I read, they need to be cleared up. This is a hard core psych facility that does not discriminate against patients based on their acuity or level of care. With that being said there are many very sick patients there. Unfortunately I don't know of a facility that separates pts based on how sick they are. I know it's not the Hilton but staff works really hard to maintain a safe and clean environment. That is a full time job. Staff is very aware of the behaviors of the patients. Patients are placed on precautions based on the presenting behaviors to keep all safe. I work there and I am extremely proud of my co-workers. Patient care is the most important part of our jobs. Granted we do have times when the unit is in disarray. This is secondary to patients that are destructive. When we have these patients, we don't discharge them because of the behaviors that have not been stabilized with medications. We fix, clean, scrub or whatever it takes to maintain the units. We do this without complaint. We know that there are patients that cannot control their behaviors and we still give them the best care No it's not the Hilton, insurance does not cover that, and most if the time the patient is there on the social security disability that the working community pays for, and their care is at no cost. So my suggestion is if it is that terrible go to Passages in Malibu. It's only $10,000 per day. I'm sure that their curtains hang straight. We have plenty of patients that come there get stabilized and return to normal lives. So since you have a psychological illness educate yourself on facilities that meet your standards. We have no problems filling beds with patients that appreciate our care. Best of luck on your journey to a healthy mind and body. more

Life Changing 1/24/2014

Dont read the bad reviews.......I am very picky and this place is 5 stars hands down....at least for children. The new part of the building is absolutely beautiful and the staff is always smiling, courteous, caring, and in good spirits. When I picked up my daughter one week later, she was her old self again. Smiling, happy, shining eyes and full of new skills for coping. She learned so much in one week...its amazing. I will be forever grateful to Harbor Oaks. And the other children there seemed like their experience was just as good. I was heart broken on the first day or so....but as I saw my daughter heal...I became more and more amazed. They are incredible. I have NO REGRETS! more

my stay 1/19/2013

I recently stayed at Harbor Oaks and really feel like they helped me out in a really dark time of my life. I was suicidal and my counselor recommended me go to Harbor Oaks to talk with them about some intensive therapy. \r \r I spoke with the girl that did the assessment and then waited (a long long long time) in the waiting room until i found out that they were going to admit me into the psych ward. i was really worried about it having read all the previous comments but i was very surprised when i got there. i sat down with one of the workers at the desk and they asked me some more questions. they had to do a "skin check", as they called it, just for bruises and scrapes and stuff which is good, i guess. after that i got a tour and a run down of what would happen. \r \r food is really good, they make sure you never go hungry. groups were great, lots of different people presented. staff was awesome, especially the afternoon shift, they made it fun to be there even though we were all t more

No place to treat mild mental disorders 7/6/2011

This place is not the facility to take your loved one to treat any form of mild mental issues. I was taken to this facility, which was 60 miles away from my home, without knowing about its' background or programming. \r \r Upon my arrival, I was treated like a inmate, in a prison. Patients are shook-down and nearly stripped search. You belongings, ALL OF THEM, are checked. \r \r Patients are robbed of items to connect to the outside word...cell phone (with or w/o a camera), computers (no even ones on site), ability to use a phone (they have three PAY phones that your love ones to call you back on...if their is not a line). \r \r No recreational therapy program (except if you call a locked down/fenced in backyard area with a rundown volley/basketball court and two 20 inch TV's...for up to 28 people. One of the TV ONLY has a movie library available from 2001, backwards. No library...reading your way out of depression will not work there.\r \r Worst and most troubling, patients with SEVERE mental more

Do not trust this facility to treat mild mental disorders 7/6/2011

This place is not the facility to take your loved one to treat any form of mild mental issues. I was taken to this facility, which was 60 miles away from my home, without knowing about its' background or programming. Upon my arrival, I was treated like a inmate, in a prison. Patients are shook-down and nearly stripped search. You belongings, ALL OF THEM, are checked. Patients are robbed of items to connect to the outside word...cell phone (with or w/o a camera), computers (there are none on site for pt. use), ability to use a phone (they have three PAY phones that your love ones to call you back on...if there is not a line to do so). You family should be important to one recovery, right? Very wrong at Harbor Oaks Jail...oops, hospital. Visitation hours at three days a three for a one whole whopping hour. And even then, two people max per visit and keep little kiddies at home. No place for them to see Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother...at all. Environment, let's talk about this. Can you say LOW CLASS? My first room, prior to demanding a change had a pt with a issue w/ holding her water :). The bed was pitiful, drawers were broken, drapes were hanging off of their drafters and smelly. Off to the second room. In this case, the roommate was much better but the room itself was still awful. All the same things described above with no lights in the bathroom. I had to recite my rights to a lighted bathroom environment, before they fixed it. No recreational therapy program (except if you call a locked down/fenced in backyard area with a rundown volley/basketball court). Worse, a total of two 20 inch TV's...for up to 28 people. One of the TV's are VCR/CD ONLY, which has a movie library available from 2001 and back. No library to speak of (books are embarrassing, really) ..so, reading your way out of a depression episode, will not work there. Worst and most troubling, patients with SEVERE mental illnesses are placed in the same area (and therapy groups) as patients with depression and/or anxiety diagnosis. This creates a zoo-animal environment, to say the very least. I saw chairs thrown, phones broken, many more issues with human water holding :( in the hallway, experienced threats of my personal safety, heard about threats to others safety daily, fights, food throwing incidents and more. Again, no place to treat MILD FORMS of mental disorders. Severe...yes....MILD....HECK NO! So, this place is very dangerous! Some pt's stay in their room all day, for their safety, seriously! They make money off your stay and force-feeding you drugs. In other words, even if you are a firm believer in ""talk therapy"", you will be MADE (yes, its' against your rights) to take drugs....or you will go to a probate court process. Staff will tell you this in direct threats, many times over. If you don't not want to stay at ""Lockdown Harbor Oaks"" for three weeks waiting for a court process, you will comply....trust me. If you believe, like I do in ""talk therapy"", stay far, far away from this place. Scary....is an understatement. They should be investigated and their state of Michigan license revoked. more

Horrid, decrepit hellhole. 6/1/2011

This place is horrible and should be shut down. I was a senior in high school attending the outpatient group therapy. As a 17-year old, I found it extremely inappropriate and ineffective to hold group therapy with ages ranging from 5 (yes, 5!) to 18. Our conditions and mental states certainly vary from each age and should have been treated with more intelligence and care. Do not send your loved ones to Harbor Oaks, and do not seek help for yourself. They do not care. more

Former Patient 5/4/2011

I was an adolescent (17 year old) patient in Harbor Oaks during October of 2008. During my stay there I met with the psychiatrist, Dr. Curtis Longs, a grand total of two times. The first was to throw me into a quick Bipolar diagnosis (which had been the current 'it' disorder, made evident by the fact that nearly everyone there was given the same diagnosis) and to prescribe an anti-psychotic and an anti-depressant as treatment. The second time was to ensure that they could get me out the door without suffering any liabilities.\r We ventured outside into the small, barbwire fenced area for fresh air twice in my entire stay as well. The place was like a prison.\r \r The general staff patients see everyday were alright. These were medical assistants and whatever the modern day term for 'orderly' is. They seemed to take genuine interest in their patients. However, the other members of staff behaved in a very indifferent and/or antagonistic manner. \r Also, I'd had an adverse reaction to the ant more

Sucide 11/23/2010

I have nothing good to say about this hospital. When I was there a girl had hung her self. Why? Why was this girl even allowed to take it this far in a "SAFE ENVIORNMENT" sounds real safe doesn't it?\r I'm not sure if she survived of not, but for the next week or so I was there she never came back..I wouldn't recommend this hospital to treat zoo animals.. more

Heavy meds and out the door 6/29/2010

Terrible. My 15 year old was limited because of the ages of inpatients. I was told one thing from the doctor. Then my daughter was put of medication and I was told she was bipolar. She has anxiety. All they do is heavy medication to get you out of danger, then send you off. They also had a 1/2 hour meeting with me, that was it. more

absolutely horible 3/26/2010

Having your child in an inpatient facility is horible enough, but Harbor Oaks made it even more unbearable.. Medicate and sedate, and mentioned by an earlier post is exactly right. I called numerous times to talk to the doctor, who never called me back. I was horrified by the way they treat these kids like zoo animals, and I would discourage anyone from letting their child be "treated" there. They do nothing to help the kids do anything but get quieted down and over the hump. more

Unacceptable 1/19/2010

Disappointment is putting this mildly. I was told one thing, received another. The "intense therapy" was talking with a counselor for about 10 minutes a day. Group therapy was restricted on the topics discussed because ages involved were 7 to 17 years. Medicate & sedate were the focus. This hospital grossed over 18 million last year. Very run down, gloomy. Not for someone to get better, mainly for people in immediate danger to others or themselves. more

Great Psychiatric & Drug Addiction Programs! 1/26/2007

Harbor Oaks has a number of wonderful programs especially for the\r young. They have inpatient and outpatient counseling. It's the big\r brick building on the North side of 23 Mile, kitty corner of the shopping center. I highly recommend Harbor Oaks. They show great concern over their patient's welfare! more
