Gojo Japanese Steak House

This place is nothing but a joke. I have never left a hibachi grill hungry before until tonight. Service was beyond horrid. Above that, one of the cooks friends brought him a shot of alcohol while he was cooking our meal. They sat us next to an extremely over intoxicated group of people who were LOUDLY talking about masturbation and making drug deals. And how pu**y juice was stuck in his beard. I was served 2/3 mushrooms and about 1/3 meat, which tasted like a leather boot. One of the hostesses told me it would be ""awhile"" before a manager could get to me. We left and called back to complain. The manager could barely understand me because of the language barrier. And just told me I should have came to the bar instead of the hostess station. He didn't bother to ask my name, offer me any compensation or anything. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. Period. Does anyone have any information about who owns this place? This is not acceptable at all. more

The service is horrible and our cook didn?t even do any tricks or talk at all. He also didn?t ask us anything about our food and ended up getting steak that was cooked too long for me and had random sauce on it. THERE WAS NO FRIED RICE. They only do steamed rice I guess. The food was okay, but compared to other japanese steakhouses I have been to it wasn?t the best. I will NOT be back. more

Brought my parents here and we all loved it! Our waitress had an attitude but whatever. The food was DELICIOUS!! I'm actually going here this weekend with some friends, pretty excited to eat here again! more

Made a reservation for tonight at Gojo's for my daughter & son-in-laws anniversary. After reading the reviews I was almost skeptical about taking them there, this is one of our favorite places to eat, when we get the chance to make it there. Glad I didn't change plans. Yes, the place was loud, and it could use some ventilation, waitress not so pleasant, however the food was great & very reasonable. Chef was awesome as well. Will continue dining at Gojo's!!!! more

March 2nd,2012: (Sigh) Oh Gojo's, when did things go so bad? I'm glad I have the memories of the good times because they are clearly a thing of the past. Before going tonight, I was simply checking the address,then saw reviews and I was determined to prove them wrong. Admittedly, the service has always been poor. But you kind of forgave that because the meal was worth it.I stand corrected.Yellow sauce will only take you so far.(I'm pretty sure this is Knorr hollandaise, but broken). Our Chef was completely devoid of any personality whatsoever.We tried to to engage him by asking questions and such. He wasnt having any of it. No onion volcano, no ""Japanese egg-roll""---nothing. (Granted, these tricks are tired but at least you make the effort). Like watching someone simply cook your dinner. Hell, I can do that at home! I was barely halfway through eating my meal when the waitress was bringing out ""to-go"" boxes. I'm not kidding, 5 bites into my steak. Then a stack of plates appeared on the table in anticipation of the next group. At this point I really wanted to just purposely take longer to p*$$ them off because I was so annoyed. Someone needs to contact Robert Irvine and resurrect this place.Its a yawn fest at best. There is a family owned Japanese place on Shawnee Mission Pkwy and Pflumm that is delicious and...here's a twist... aware that your dollars could be spent anywhere. No, no Gojo's legend to lean on.Just good service and delicious food. They actually treat you like you are a GUEST. more

My husband and I had been to Gojo's several times. Our most recent and final visit was 2/18/12. We got there at 4pm when it opened. There was no hospitality shown by the greeter. Our server had no personality what so ever and was too soft spoken to work there. The chef was fine, but there was already a damper on the visit. The server stood behind the chef as he cooked. Her arms were crossed and she looked bored to tears. The bus boy brought me more water and I asked him for more tea. He said sure, but then never returned. Next time I saw him, he was in someone else's food area with his arms crossed looking bored! The food was good, but we'll go to Kobe's from now on where at least they make you feel welcome. You're spending too much money not to feel appreciated. My husband, who is a GM in the restaurant business, said all the employees we came in contact with would not have a job at the end of the day if he were their manager! Also, my husband ordered a margarita which looked like a Sprite. A woman at the table that we did not know ordered a MaiTai. There was no red color to it and she complained that it tasted strictly like grapefruit juice. The server talked to the bartender about both drinks and came back to our table. She offered to take both drinks back for more liquor at an additional charge. HA! Needless to say, we both declined. That was really ridiculous! more

I love their food but hate their service! A couple of years ago I called to reserve a dinner time for my then girlfriend and now wife for Valentines day. When we showed up for our time they couldn't find my name. They had a name that sounded like mine but spelled differently. They waited, calling out the other name for 30 minutes before the ""let"" us take a seat. They reminded us that we were not on the list. I haven't been back since. I gave them another chance this year. I reserved seats for my wife and I on January 25th. I called tonight to confirm my reservation time, because I forgot, the gentleman on the other end said that he can't find my name... We'll se how it goes on Tuesday. Please pray or me! more

Just left from there and the place is horrible. The first grades chairs that you sit in are filthy as hell. The smell is almost unbearable. The prices are rediculous. It really needs a make over. The food was ok, but could have been cooked a little longer. I would never go there again and I would recommend that you go in and check it out first before you eat there. No stars. more

The ""yellow sauce"" is to die for! I moved to Springfield for school and whenever I go back to KC I HAVE to go there! The place doesn't look the nicest but it is clean inside and the staff is friendly! If you go, I recommend Walter as your as your cook. He does an excellent job and makes the experience a lot of fun! more

If I could give gojos no star I would. My husband used to hate this place but I would always drag him there because I liked the shrimp with the yellow sauce, but he always complained about it looking and smelling dirty and the food not tasting good. But I kept going there. Recently the host was changed and now there is an un-expericed host who will not do a good job at sitting down people. He is just a kid who has no idea what he is doing. I wanted to take my friends from church and before going I asked if I could make a reservation, he said not to, that I could just walk in, didn't even ask how many of us would go. but we get there and we're told it would take about 20-30 mins. well I didn't mind waiting. People with reservations kept coming in and being taken to thier table ahead of us, this happened for like 10-12 families that would just walk in after us. I got very irritated and asked the guy after about 40 mins if we would be next, he said it would take about 30 mins more because they were handling the people with reservations first. I felt the rush of anger for this guy making a fool of us, really?? I told him to get us next because we were told not to make a reservation and that it would take 20-30 mins in the first place. He ignored me and went to the back, came out and said there was a table ready.... LIAR, finally after sitting for ages I told my husband, let's just go, we got up and told him we were leaving, he said the people at your table are just finishing up their ice cream!! are you kidding me?? wasn't it ready like 20 minutes ago??? Finally we got our friends out the door and everyone was sooo disappointed for waiting so long and not getting anything. Gojo lost a lot of customers that would probably refer them even more customers. There are many japanese steak houses out there that actually have a better sitting experience, cleaner, where the food actually taste like its supposed to and will tell you the truth from the beginning. Don't waste your time here, I know I won't. Look up Haru's the food is great there and the staff is nice! more

I went to Gojo this past weekend and it was AWESOME!!! I think sometimes people mistake an older building with a dirty building. It was clean and the food was really good. It was my husband's first time at this type of restaurant and he loved it. The service was good. Everyone was friendly. I also looked up their past inspections and the last few were good. We loved it so much that we are taking my brother in law later this week. YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM!!!! more

The food is awesome, the ""yellow sauce"" is the to die for! As far as the food is concerned I give it 5 stars as far as attitude is concerned I give it 1 star hell negative one star!, the wait staff is not friendly at all and the little guy in the booth is a D*ck and a half. I made reservations all most a week before we came and when I get there they tell me there they have no record of it and look at me like I am lying and in no way shape or form consider getting me and my table of 8 into eat! They pretty much told me too bad! Now the cooks on the other hand are both competent and friendly! but the Wait staff.........oh the wait staff........they are horrible, the worst ever they refused to give my little 5 year old girl ice cream at the end of the meal because she shared a plate with me?!!? I mean who refuses to give a 5 year old girl ice cream with the rest of the table? So i said i would pay for it who cares right? So i was charged $1 and tipped the cook and did not tip the waitress. Overall the food is phenominal but expect to be treated like a red headed step-child in the the most snotty French resturant! more

I hadn't been to Gojo's in forever. I went last night with some friends. Everything was absolutely wonderful and delicious... until at the very end of our meal, a ROACH crawled across the table where the chef cooks a few times. We finishing up our conversation and were getting ready to leave when I glanced over and saw a roach crawling back and forth on the table... Don't think I will be going back. There are pleanty of good Japanese Steakhouses in the Northland that are bug free. So GROSS! more

ok, at one time they rocked. now it smells like a toilet when you walk in the door. realllly needs painted and the carpet needs replaced. the staff are bored and stiff, just going thru the motions. more

My husband and I went there with our family and the food was quite tasty however the place is not clean and the shrimp are not deviened you would think for the price they could serve shrimp that is deviened. I thought it was against health code to serve shrimp that is not deveined. I don't think they clean those grills very well. My granddaughter and I both got very Sick after eating there we had to take my granddaughter to the emergency room. The food is great but you take a chance of getting sick eating there. So my wife really used to love this place..so we decided to go out to eat one Sunday evening and thought Gojos would be a nice treat. Well, treat was definitely the wrong description to give that last experience. The establishment needs a severe overhaul. It absolutely smells horrible and you wear it w/ you when you leave. The food..geeze, the food taste like bottom of the the barrel seafood and dirt grazed beef. It is NOT like what we'd remembered. I don't know, maybe a few buckets of paint, some plug-in airfreshners and a new waitressing staff could help change the environment around. But then again, that doesn't fix the cheap taste of their food! Pros: Hard to find any anymore Cons: The smell of the place and taste of food more

I like how they give you the courses: the salad, the rice and shrimp (and the Hollondaise sauce is great! I thought it looked nasty at first, but once I tasted it, it is great!), then your main course (it doesn't look like it is a lot of food, but once you start eating all the courses, it will fill you up and most of the time, we have to take home a little To Go Box.) and the sherbet they give you at the end!!
