Great place 1/7/2011

The location is great, esp. if you live in Chicago. The trainers are all really nice when you get to know them. They are all very experienced. The kids around the barn are great. The desk ladys are kind as well. You have to give this place a chance!!! :) more

Gorgeous - indoor/outdoor riding ring 12/28/2010

A family friend gets private lessons so we were able to observe from afar and walk around the facility. There's an indoor and outdoor riding ring. That indoor one comes in handy unless you want to be riding in 5 ft. snow come winter! They offer a 30 min private session that beginners are encouraged to take before buying the hourly packages. The space surrounding the equestrian facility can be used for picnicking on gorgeous summer days. Lush greens and trees to shade you from the Chicago sun. more

horrible. horrible. horrible. 9/18/2010

i rate this place -100000009. it sucks. i feel so bad for the horses. they live in extremely dirty ad very small stalls, its almost like abuse. they do not take good care of these horses at all. they put them on drugs and and they don't feed them enough. a lot of horse have even died there! there are mice everywhere, windows are broken, the nails from the wood are coming out and its soo dusty i dont think any of the workers even try to keep the place in shape. and the trainers...oh boy...who do they think they are. i rode there for about a couple of months and my trainer was late for my lesson every single week. she hardly paid attention to me and i only learned the basics. she mad me cry about 10 times from her yelling and screaming at me when all im am ther for is to learn. she was soo rude. and the lady that runs the place and the lady at the front desk are CRAZZZY!! they have let this place go out of control. and they dont care about the riders. a half an hour lesson is $40. i went on a 2 hour ride on the beech for $40 on vacation. if someone rides there for a year only once a week thay would have wasted about over 2050. its rediculous. i just hope somtime soon these horse will be taken care of, that all i worry about. more

I just came by to say... 9/11/2010

the barn is dirty, and not a healthy place for those poor animals. I boarded my horse there a while back, maybe about 8 years or so a go. I recently signed my daughter up for lessons, and it hasnt changed at all. The place is run down, dirty, it smells terrible when you walk in. The owner is crazy, the only hopes for those animals i if she gets out, and she wont. There is poop everywhere on everything, mice too. The place isnt health for those horses. The only thing good about it is that there are 2 really good trainers there and it is worth your money going to THEM, and noone else. esp not that crazy owner. if you own a horse do not go to this barn. but if oyu want to learn and dont care about your childs health, or those poor horses, then its the place for you! it was NOT the place for me. i was disgusted more

Concentration Camp 7/18/2010

I briefly boarded my horses at this barn. I was extremely disappointed in everything about this facility. The temperature during the winter months fluctuates rapidly, there are children running at you with no control of the animals, my horses were NOT turned out, and MOST animals are accustomed to the tranquilizer ACE regularly. This place is not for any animal lover in my opinion! Pros: Close to the city Cons: little to no turn-out, bad circulation, horrible place more

Rundown 7/18/2010

I have been riding at Glen Grove for quite a long time... I started there when i was 7 & have been riding ever since. This place does have certain drawbacks, it is dirty, the school horses are run down and mistreated, and the turnout is minimal. i have boarded horses here and ridden countless others, the owner is a bit difficult to work with but i believe that is because she has a tough job. the trainers here are rough with children and sometimes do yell unnecessarily but they also do this for their safety, many children have trouble listening (i have worked with them) and the 6th time they repeat the warning, yells are needed. if you do come to glen grove expecting your child to be the next great... move along. the trainers here are great at the basics but in the end will take your child to limited places. Other farms have better treatment of the horses, riders, and parents and ocassionaly better prices. They will also bring your children to bigger places and allow them to grow as riders. I hope that someday glen grove will get someone that will love it and bring it to its full potential because it could be quite beautiful and quite more lucrative, but i cant imagine that day is soon and i wont be holding my breath. more

Aweful 5/16/2010

This place is in need of work. The roof looks like it is about to cave in and the stalls are in definate need of maintenance. There are a few nice instructors, but too bad they publicly use tranquilizers to ensure your child a good ride. Most days you can see used syringes stuck into the jumps. This is unsanitary and unsafe. This place grossed me out. I couldn't have run out the door faster! Pros: trails Cons: not well maintained, dirty environment more

Well run for being so close to the city 4/5/2010

Glen Grove is a decent facility for being so close to downtown Chicago. There are 90 stalls and multiple businesses being run out of the facility. They have a trainer for people looking to go to larger shows and instructors to teach people doing this once a week. Pros: Freindly boarders and very helpful staff more

don't go here 3/24/2010

I rode at this barn for years because it was my only option due to it's location. I also worked there as a student for years, and boarded my own horse when I got one. I hate this place. They work the horses into the ground and teach by favoritism and money. Almost every school horse is lame and the horses don't get turn out. The instructors are cruel and inattentive, and they don't do their jobs properly. They hated me and my horse and treated us like crap. I spent extra time taking care of horses who hadn't had a person interact with them for months because no one cared. Don't go here. It's not worth it. Pros: stalls kept clean Cons: people unprofessional, animals mistreated more

Don't waste your money 3/23/2010

My daughter took lessons at Glen Grove for a few years, and our experience was not great. The instructors are largely young and spend most of the lesson time chatting with each other in the ring, ignoring their students. You pay for a 30 minute private lesson but your child only spends 20 minutes riding. Pros: Nice horses, friendly boarders Cons: Lessons are mediocre at best more

Glen Grove 12/15/2009

Some people need to understand that hundreds of people walk into these doors every week. I have been riding at Glen Grove for 5 years and have experienced the good and bad. The trainers try their best. If and when they are on the phone, I happen to know for a fact it has to deal with their work at the barn. They are not casting aside your child. The trainers are all very kind, and know what they are doing to make your child a safe and educated rider. The grooms are very funny and nice guys, and also love working with the horses. If a child needs help there are plenty of working students there to help, just as one of us! We're always around and glad to help. Glen Grove has very hard working school horses that are great to learn on. Glen Grove is a fantastic barn, it could use a bit of cleaning up, but we do our best. :) Please consider all of these factors when writing a review. Pros: Do our best more

Horses need turnout too.... 10/31/2009

I visited the place a couple of times to buy a horse there. I cannot comment on the instructors but they seemed friendly. The indoor arena is sufficiently large but the footing did not appear to have been dragged recently. My main problem with places like these is that they don't take into account the horses' needs. Horses are not indoor pets, nor are they machines that exist only for girls to ride and win ribbons. They are outdoor animals who are highly social. They need to graze in an open space and socialize with other horses. They need a safe, fenced pasture, with approximately one acre per horse. Depriving them of space and socialization causes them to develop behavioral and health problems. I realize that not everybody can afford to keep horses at home or travel to a real farm, but a crowded barn so close to a busy city is no place for horses. Pros: Heated barn, nice people Cons: Horses have no real turnout, are locked in all the time more

very welcoming. 8/17/2009

i absolutely love this place. my daughter boards a here and when we moved from the barn down the street we were told by one of the women at the barn ""welcome home"" and thats how i feel now. it is my home away from home as well as my daughters. the people that work there are all very welcoming and they always greet us when i come through the door. all of the girls are very nice, and they always greet me as well as my daughter as we walk down the isle to see our boy. Im just so glad that i found this place more

Place to go! 8/17/2009

i love this place! everyones nice! theres good horses, good service and really nice people. i always feel welcome and im always greeted by the desk lady or by the people at the office when i first i walk in. theres even working students to get the horses ready for you if you want so you dont have a hard time tacking up! they give them baths and they clean out the horses waterers and they take good care of them. the trainers are all really really nice, I love all of them! they actually care about you and the way you ride, theyre funny and all amazing riders (unless they physically cant ride anymore) I just love all of the people there. Pros: nice people Cons: needs a paint job more

Glen Grove... 8/17/2009

ive been boarding at glen grove for about 8 or 9 months, and lately i really like it. its not the nicest barn but it probably would been nice at firdt because its really old. the barn need to be cleaned up, but then it would be a lot nicer. i read some of the reviews and some say that the owner can get a little grumpy sometimes... yeah she can. its sort of true byt ive seen much worse at different barns she only gets mad when shes having a bad day or if she gets annoyed at someone before she talks to you but other than that shes really nice. the grooms are nice, some of them do a really great job of taking care of the horses, but the others do an overall ok job. i LOVE the ponies! theyre all soo cute! i read that people thin that they dont take care of them well... first theyre outside all the time so when theyre groomed they get dirty all over again, also they clean out the pen 1nce a week, and they get fed too... all i know is that theyre adorable and all really cute. also i read that people say that the trainers yell all the time, all i can say is that they only yell when the child isnt being safe and when the child doesnt do what theyre telling them to do. i personally dont really know what theyre talking about, ive never heard them yell or have ever been yelled at either. the people are all nice and friendly and i rwally do like the place. the only bad part about it is that its an old barn which makes it kind of dirty, but i really do love the place. Pros: nice people Cons: uhh... more

great place 8/17/2009

great place! i love the people, the boarders and trainers are all nice. the horses are all really nice and all of the show horses are fancy. i read some of the reviews and most of them say that the owner can be mean, they dont treat the ponies that well, and the trainers scream. NO WAY! first of all the ponies are in the pen because theres no where else to put them because theres no stalls... and anyways they let them sleep in the main arena at night. they get fed too. what more could they get?! there sooo cute as well second of all, the owner can get mad soemtimes but only if shes in a bad mood. she isnt nuts or anything like that she just has a hot temper (its better than the one at freedom woods!) third of all, the traners dont scream except for one, and she left about a month ago. I love all of them and there the best that you could ever find. theyre great. this place rocks! Pros: nice people Cons: ok barn more
