Bamboomoves: 5 Stars without Reservation! 8/25/2010

About one year ago, I ran into a neighbor who told me about Bamboo Moves in Forest Hills. Since I had not attended yoga classes for several years, although I still considered myself a true yogini, I decided to check it out myself. The very first day that I walked in, I was impressed with the serenity and calm of the studio space as well as the warmth and friendliness of the staff. Since then, I have become a regular at this awesome studio. Bamboo Moves offers a sense of community through activities like the Veggie Challenge and Labor Day Retreat to those who attend classes there and gives back to the community through many of their good works such as supporting the local Community House and distant places such as Nicaragua. Since resuming my yogic journey last year, I have met many wonderful and talented people including instructors, staff, and people like myself that attend the studio. I absolutely recommend at Bamboo Moves in Forest Hills without reservation. more

Feels Like Home 8/4/2010

My husband and I became members the day they opened. Have you ever walked into a place and just felt right? That's the feeling I got then, and always get, coming into Bamboomoves in Forest Hills. The space is clean, calming, peaceful. The teachers are skilled and open-hearted and lovely to be around. I had always wanted to develop a regular yoga practice and I love that this place came into my life, right in our neighborhood. They have a variety of class levels, so however I'm feeling, I can find a class to fill my needs. It's a welcoming place, a haven from the hectic pace of daily life. more

A wonderful, beautifully located facility 8/2/2010

This is a great place that's greeeeatly located. I stop there on the way to Manhattan since I take the bus to the subway. I get out of the bus, have my class then hop on the subway. It's brilliant. I am new to Bamboomoves, have been there three times so far, but it's clear that it's a quality facility. The energy there is very kind and welcoming. It's not just a yoga studio, it's a community. There's great information about living well in general beyond yoga, ie. books on eating well when eating raw, vegan or vegetarian. I tried TaiChi there for the very first time and it was lovely, Cherry (spelling?) was clear and encouraging. I also stumbled into Dharma yoga that Yoshio taught. Best Yoga class I've ever had. Challenging, good time spent on breath work. I walked out feeling grounded and calm and yet like I got a good workout. I also love the floors, I'd imagine they're bamboo :) Forest Hills is also a great location. There's loads of shopping available in the area and it seems like there are good, relatively healthy places to eat too. Pros: Great location, beautiful floor, plants, skilled instructors Cons: no door on main yoga room, not a huge deal more

NOT MERELY LIFE TRANSFORMING...LIFE SAVING! 8/2/2010

Though I had made a commitment, 23 days before setting foot in this studio, to digging myself out of the most health-threatening stage of my life, the fortitude to continue on the path has come from Bamboomoves. That alone would have been enough to give the support and inspiration I've found here a 4-star-rating, instead, my experience has broken through any rating system. My journey here has been invaluable, priceless, immeasurable, not merely life transforming, it has been literally life saving!\r \r Since becoming a student here in September 2009, I’ve lost 51 pounds, completely reversed a pre-diabetic / metabolic syndrome state, the stupor of depressive inactivity (which had lasted 11 years) has been completely vanquished, I feel and look better than I did 20 years ago --(my friends at work promoted me from just “skinny” to “skinny bitch”), my energy level and my ability to face stress is through the roof, I am more compassionate, and, more importantly, I am more available to my family, and a better mother than ever before to my two beautiful children who are on the autistic spectrum! \r \r Moreover, there have been even more profound changes, which space and time do not allow for elaboration in this forum. These are the changes that I yearned but didn’t expect the extent and the rapidity with which I have attained them, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Like the dimensions of asanas in yoga which are never ending, so is the depth and meaning of my life. I may not know all the things I am going to accomplish, but I know this is big, bigger than I ever thought possible. As a dear friend told me: “You are going to fly!” \r \r How incredible to know that my life’s flight instructor has been here in the center of my heart all along, how appreciative and indebted to my instructors at Bamboomoves I feel for pointing me in the direction of that inner teacher! Thank you, a thousand times and more, thank you. Especialmente para mi profesor Yoshio, una lluvia eterna de \r agradecimientos y besos!\r \r If you are serious about attaining the life of a yogi, then you’ll automatically remain unconcerned about the lack of a door, or any petty nonsense not even worth mentioning, and you’ll immediately see this is a place where true yoga lives!\r Pros: Instructors who go beyond the call of duty, they live yoga! Cons: NONE! more

CAPOEIRA CLASS ! 7/28/2010

So i've always admired people who practiced capoeira and i finally found a place in queens that taught it ! It was great because the class was about an hour and a half and only costed about 20 bucks and being a student in high school, it came out to 16 bucks after 20% student discount. However, i did enjoy this class very much considering i'm into sports and high intensity movements. I'm definately coming back to this place! ;) Pros: very good teacher ! more

A GEM IN FOREST HILLS!!! 7/28/2010

I found Bamboo about two years ago. I've tried many different studos but when I came to Bamboo I knew that this was a special authentic place. The instructors are so kind and helpful. There's always a class that I can take and learn from. The energy is amazing, not to mention the smile you get upon entering the studio. What I love most about the studio is that they are always looking for ways to inform and educate people by providing so many different opportunities. There are workshops, field trips, weekend retreats, nutrition information guides, books to borrow and buy at the studio. How can you go wrong! I love this place, it's become a second home where I can be myself and feel amazing when I leave. A true GEM in Forest Hills. WE are so lucky to have them! Namaste:) Pros: excellent teachers more

love this place! 7/28/2010

I've been regularly attending classes at this studio for almost a year now. All the teachers there are really great, and I find that I learn different things from each of them. When I first started there, I got a new student discount on the unlimited monthly pass, which was a great opportunity to take classes with the different teachers and get to know their style of teaching. I love the yoga classes themselves, and besides that, I've made so many positive changes in my life since I've started yoga. One of the great things about Bamboomoves is that they encourage you to bring the yoga philosophy into your life. The teachers might sometimes start the class with an inspirational reading or quote, they often suggest that you to dedicate your practice to someone else, they remind you to put good food in your body and think positive thoughts, etc. I like that I can get my exercise in, but also participate in something that adds meaning to my life. I also really appreciate the sense of community at Bamboomoves. I've met many people there, and there is a really lovely sense of warmth uniting the Bamboomoves community. You should definitely try it out! Pros: the teachers, the community more

You keep disappointing! 7/3/2010

I was very disappointed when Bamboomoves in Forest Hills moved to a new location. The main yoga room doesn't have a door on it, which means you can hear the people checking in (beeps) and talking in the waiting room while you are trying to concentrate. Also annoying, but less so, is the street noise that comes from Queens Blvd. The studio faces the noisy street. Kinda goes against the whole yoga philosophy! Even in 95 degree weather, the air conditioning is not turned on. Given that this is NOT bikram yoga or 'hot yoga,' I really don't want to be sweating to death while I do yoga. There is no bathroom inside the studio. You have to check out a key to use the public bathroom in the building. Especially worth noting....when the instructor ends a 75-minutes class after 50 minutes because she ""wants to attend the next yoga class in the other room,"" you're definitely not getting what you paid for. Evening classes can get so crowded, you barely have room to move! Again, not worth the money. Overall, what you get with Bamboomoves is not worth the cost. Even with a 10-class package, you're paying $15 per class. I'd be perfectly fine with this if there weren't so many cons! Pros: variety of classes; classes offered at convenient times Cons: difficult to concentrate and be calm; expensive more
