Ghastly experience! 5/16/2012

I was alone and ate at the bar. Probably the worst seat in the house. The waiters were coming up to get their drinks and some were standing around doing nothing. They were talking like sailors and one heavy set black waitress was talking about her love life and almost getting arrested because the police had stopped her and she had drugs on her, but luckiely the police didn't search her,...then another waitress was talking about being hung-over ... Not anything I really wanted to hear while eating my dinner. The food was ""bland"". Seriously, shrimp at Popeye's is better. more

Miss the old Dutchman... 6/5/2011

At one time the Flying Dutchman was a fine dining restaurant. Now, it is an upscale Joe's Crab Shack. The food at Joe's is better. I have been stewing on this for a week. I didn't want to write the review while I was still angry. Unfortunately, I am still angry so,.....It was bad from the moment we walked in. The wait was about an hour. I can forgive that, it was a really busy weekend. I can't forgive poor and rude service. Yes, again, I really miss the old upstairs part of the Dutchman, which is now Red Sushi. Kyle our bartender was uncaring....yes, the kid was busy, but you are still required to do your job whether there is one guest or 100. He didn't want to be there and it showed. Then we got a table. Tonika, our waitress, was.....""gruff"".....her attitude, waitress skills, personality, would be ok at a Denny's, but not at a $50 a per person restaurant. Then the food finally arrived. I got the fried captain's platter. It was undercooked. You don't under cook seafood. .....I really miss the old Flying Dutchman were the food was good and the management ran a tight ship. more

Better Than Landry's! 10/19/2010

We were enjoying some great spaghetti and unbelievably good lasagna at The Terrace Cafe, and we asked the owner where we could get good seafood. He recommended Landry's , The Flying Dutchman, or Red Sushi. We went to Landry's the first night and it had horrible service and ok seafood. Then we went to the Flying Dutchman for lunch the next day. The food was actually better than Landry's, but the service was just as bad. We were put on a wait and sat at the bar for a drink and the bartender didn't really seem to care if we were there or not. But the outside bar was charming. It was downhill after that. This is not saying much, but the service was better than Landry's , yet still aweful...... good view though.....and the seafood was better than Landry's..... more

Good Attempt and Nice Changes 5/28/2010

We ate at The Flying Dutchman on the Kemah Boardwalk last weekend, and found it to be very enjoyable. They have made several nice decor changes since Hurricane Ike. They now have an outdoor bar with Adirondack chairs circling a nice gas firepit, along with new outdoor table furnishings. The inside has also been remodeled to now include a new waiting area, new lighting fixtures and new table seating. The menu has also been revamped and extended to include more fresh fish options. I ordered the Ultimate Seafood Platter while my fiancee chose the Hawaiian styled Mahi Mahi. Both plates were very good and quite filling. The only negative was that our waitress was obviously new, and not very well trained. We had to ask her for silverware, condiments, and a correction on our drink order that was delivered. She was accomodating with each correction, yet she should not have had to be coached by us. With better training of their floor staff, The Flying Dutchman could soar to new heights. Pros: New menu items and new furnhishings Cons: Unskilled waitress more

Great service, delicious pecan pie! 7/7/2009

The hostess was sweet, and the waiter was great, very friendly and accommodating. The manager even came by to check on us, even though the place was getting busy. Our food came out so quickly, I had just barely finished my salad. I had the panko-crusted salmon with dill tzatziki and my husband had the stuffed flounder with crab meat topping. Both came with rice pilaf and veggies (brocolli and red bell pepper) which were nothing fancy, but they were lightly seasoned and enjoyable. The fish entrees were both REALLY delicious. Even though we were full, since it was our anniversary, we also ordered strawberry cheesecake and Colonel Beauregard's Pecan Pie - - both were SO GOOD. The pecan pie was warm and had a gorgeous flavor from the bourbon and came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The strawberry topping on the cheesecake was the best I've ever had. It was a wonderful experience all around. Pros: Great service & bourbon pecan pie!!! Cons: I have NO complaints :) more

NOT THE SAME AS BEFORE IKE!! 3/30/2009

We have been dining at The Flying Dutchman since we moved to Houston 20 years ago. Our favorite was always the Snapper Strips basket, the only place we've every known to serve this! We were so disappointed when we dined there on Mar. 28 and found not only a new menu (with no snapper strips), but the fried entrees also have a different breading, not nearly as tasty. When we inquired about the snapper not being on the menu, the waitress said ""no problem, the ktichen can prepare that for you."" When she delivered our meals, it was an entire fried snapper filet, not strips. The meal was okay, but not The Flying Dutchman that we loved. Unlike previous reviews, our service was fine. Pros: decor Cons: new menu-new taste more

Overpriced and Under Cooked 3/25/2009

Screaming children running around, raw food being served and seeing my waitress four times when it was not a busy nite made my experience special. I did get to see a manager as he replaced my raw shrimp, he apologized and left never to return again to check on our satisfaction. I have had better service and customer skills shown at a Burger King than by the staff of The Flying Dutchman. The manager left so quickley I didn't get a chance to tell him I chipped a tooth on my apatizer not that I think he would have stuck around any longer any way. I payed the eighty seven dollar tab and left to enjoy a nite of disapointment from that place and looking for somewhere that sold Pepto to save me from the raw shrimp they took forever to serv me. Pros: Good location Cons: Overpriced and undercooked more

WARNING! AWFUL SERVICE AT THE LEAST!!!!! 3/23/2009

Waited 25 minutes and had to ask for a waiter. There were 5 waiters working 6 - 7 tables so it wasn't like they were busy. Most waiters just standing around. Food was not near as good as pre IKE. Waiter knew we were dissatisfied and did NOTHING to change our mind. Had to ask the manager for our bill. Manager just made excuses for the bad service. At the very least he could have offered to comp anything, don't just make excuses. We use to go there often, but will not go there again. BE WARNED!!!! Pros: Close to the house. Cons: Managment more

Fresh and perfectly cooked seafood; terrific key lime pie 11/20/2008

I visited the Flying Dutchman Restaurant 7/4/08 with my sister and brother-in-law. We enjoyed an excellent view from inside the restaurant in the corner of the window walls. All of our seafood was perfectly cooked, and excellent in taste. The key lime pie was the best ever! Our server was attentive and courteous. I hope to return the next time I visit my family in Pearland. To eat at the Flying Dutchman has become a tradition. more

Fl;ying Dutchman Kemah Tx. 8/3/2008

I cant believe the reviews I have read! I grew up in Kemah Tx and my mother, brother, sister and I worked for the Flying Dutchman when owned by Frans and Diane G. they made the Flying Dutchman what it WAS! I am very sorry to hear that the new owners have taken the true meaning of Fun, Fine Elegant Dining away from the Flying Dutchman. more

not impressed by any means 7/27/2008

I have been told for 3 years to go to the Dutchman and I finally did and took my mother-in-law and grandfather with me. I'm now sorry i did. We ordered the clam chowder and it showed up ice cold. It took 10 min. to get the waitress to get more hot soup. When I ordered the broiled seafood plater i asked the waitress about the ""seasoning"" on the food and she said it was just like a pinch of salt. I told her i was concerned cause i have a stomach problem and can't have any spices at all. I told her i would feel better if I could order it with NO SPICES ALL ALL. She said ""nope....it comes wil just a little, you won't even know it's there"" since when do other people decide what I'm going to order? If I'm paying, then I decide. She assured me it would be fine. When my food came it was like a cajun spice and I couldn't eat my food. By the time I could get her again to fix my food, my entire family had finished eating and we were reading to go. So needless to say, I paid 22 bucks for a meal I didn't get to eat so I'm not really happy about it. My mother-in-law ordered french fries instead of rice and she never got them. The waitress offered to bring them with the check and said ""you can take them home with you"" WTF??? Do you people actually screne your personal before giving them a job. My total bill was almost $160 and some of my food i didn't get and some of it went into the trash without being eaten and the waitress wasn't even willing to do anything about it. So my first experience to the The Flying Dutchman? I think it's overrated and the service stinks and when things gets screwed up you can't even get a manager to fix it. You are just stuck with the bill and the wrong food. NOT RIGHT AT ALL! Pros: my son loved his BBQ ribs. funny since the ribs where the only thing good at the seafood resturant. Cons: the soup was ice cold, the service was the worst i've ever had and you can't get a manger to fix things when you have a problem. more

Better off at Long John Silvers 5/15/2008

I used to enjoy going to the Dutchman. The past few times I have gone I have been very disappointed. The only nice thing I can say is that the outdoor seating is nice. We ordered the shrimp cocktail for our appetizer, the shrimp looked as if they had been frozen for years and tasted like it too. I had the broiled fish platter and found it to be inedible ; the scallops were rubbery, the shrimp tasteless, and the fish was not fresh, I could not even enjoy the broccoli which tasted as if it had been microwaved. Honestly, I think we could have had a much better meal at Luby?s Cafeteria! If you must eat in Kemah, try Landry's. Pros: outdoor seating Cons: bad food at any price, poor service more

One of the best on the boardwalk 4/20/2008

I have a like/dislike relationship with this restaurant. My kids like it though - usually their first choice when in Kemah. There is a gross smell, like old tar and wet wood. and the bar is right at the front where you have to walk through the cigarette smell if there is a smoker at the bar. (I don't have anything against smokers but do dislike the smell, lol) I always think of ""The crusty crab"" when we are there. Most indoor and outdoor tables have great views of the boats going by, as well as the people walking on the boardwalk. There is a big playground right outside that the kids loved when they were younger. We can also watch the kids feed the ducks and fish from off the boardwalk from many of the tables while waiting for our meals. Theres a little cutout where there is a food dispenser...the fat ducks and fatter fish are swarming for the food and the seagulls can't get to it. The food is pretty good and the service just depends on the day - sometimes awesome - sometimes stinks. Some of the tables are a bit too crowded together difficult to get by (and I am average sized) They have a pretty good kids menu and yay! slushies! Pros: Kid friendly, great view Cons: odor, service is inconsistent more

GOOD BYE FLYING DUTCHMAN 11/29/2007

For many years (25-30) I have enjoyed the Flying Dutchman Restaurant (under the original owners and the new regime) upstairs but, the last few times I have been there, the service and food has not been the same. THIS FOUR STAR RESTAURANT IS NOW STARLESS. My favorite for years was the Dijon Shrimp dish but the last time I was there, I had over cooked vegetables and the shrimp were soggy. The waiter spilled a portion of my wine and did not offer to top it off. My guests were also not enthusiastic with their dinners and drinks. There were not a lot of patrons in the dining room but we were told there would be a short wait. It was over 30 minutes before we were seated. Drink orders took a long time to return to our table (our white wine was almost room temperature) and when a refill was necessary on the drinks, an even longer time to receive them. I asked for a cappuccino with Gran Marnier on the side and received it mixed in the cappuccino. When I asked the waiter to correct his mistake, he told me that is the way it is served. Finally, he replaced it as I requested it but the cappuccino was almost cold. NOPE, I will not return to a favorite restaurant I so enjoyed for many years. The food and service has definitely declined. I now have found a new restaurant in La Porte called MAIN, ONE O ONE on Main Street and Broadway. Joe (the owner) will give impeccable service and the food is FANTASTIC. They are not open on Sunday's. Pros: nice view if you are able to get a window seat Cons: No longer the fine restaurant of the past more

Go there if you want to get ripped off. 9/16/2007

It wasn't busy and we had to wait to be seated. Once we were seated we had to wait to order. It took too long for our drinks to come. The ice in our drinks had pretty much melted by the time we got them that's how long it took. It was another half hour before we got our appetizer. The oysters were not fresh, and that's when we asked for our check. It took another 15 minutes for that, and when we recieved our change back they had shorted us on our change. It was really bad service all around. I recommend to any one who is considering trying this place out to not to. I'm just trying to save you some money and a headache. Pros: Other great restaurants nearby you can go to instead. Cons: The service and not so fresh seafood. more

for a laid-back seafood experience 11/23/2006

this is a real ""hole-in-the-wall"" type of place for swashbuckling pirates ... the decor is extremely laid-back, touched with seafaring treasures and trinkets. the seafood is decent and quite average ... but it'll be satisfying to the palette. the location is it's highlight: located on the bustling kemah boardwalk. overall, it is an ok dining experience, but enjoyable if you're with a group of friends.* Pros: location, decent food more

average seafood 10/31/2006

Average seafood in enjoyable surroundings Other seagood restaurants have better vie of the bay and gulf and better food steak in a seafood restaurant is tolerable Quality is inconsistent Pros: Wait staff Cons: average food more

Best Seafood 10/26/2006

My favorite place to eat seafood and enjoy the surroundings. The stuffed Flounder is very good and much better and less expensive than another establishment close by. Great place to go with friends and enjoy the day! Pros: Great Food Cons: N/A more

Bypass Dutchman and go to Landrys 9/11/2006

My fiance and I went there to meet our wedding party of 6 for a ""pre happy hour"" before meeting up with our families for our rehersal dinner. It was not busy, but we could not get seats at the bar because the wait staff was seated at the bar doing their paper work. Along side with the so called young female supervisor. Who had the loudest and most vulgar mouth out of any of them. We all stood around waiting for them to notice us so that they would move, but they just ignored us! The guys let us ladies sit because there were limited chairs. Finally after 25 mins or so they left. We all got app's and several drinks to follow. The bartender was not that bad, but had an attitude at times when we'd try to talk to him about places in the area to go. The Clam Chowder was warm, not hot. The oysters however were fresh. Drinks were ok, but over priced. It was freezing cold however, my biggest complaint next to the loud mouth supervisor. Overall, we probably won't ever dine downstairs again. We will however give upstairs a try. We heard the food is much better along with the atmosphere, waitstaff and more professional management team. Pros: the a/c is really cold if your hot natured. Cons: the waitstaff more
