I'm 29 years old, I have had a gym membership at some type of fitness club for over 10 years, I understand how gyms run. I expected to deal with a larger than normal crowd the first quarter of the new year, I also expected that paying such a cheap membership I'd be losing some luxuries I had at other gyms such as 24Hr fitness or LA Fitness. What I did not expect was for the exercise classes, in particular their Thursday night, (8pm) Zumba class, to be so overcrowded that you're concerned for your safety and you're constantly running into others around you. Added to that is the fact that you cant work out fully for fear of having your face touch the person's head (or rear end) in front of you, or that there is NO type of ventilation what so ever. The class size allowed is outrageous. I can best describe it as a herd of cattle and I'm just a cow lost in the mix trying not to get lost in the stampede.
I have now spoken with 2 different managers; Pedro, over the phone and Josh P. in person. When I spoke with Pedro and voiced my concerns about the class sizes and safety issues he informed there would be a meeting the following Monday, and that this would be brought up and that I should get back with him if I needed to. Upon going back to Zumba, after their meeting, it was just as bad if not worse. I have never ever been a member at a gym that did not monitor the class size or, at the very least monitor the class conditions. I spoke with Josh P. in person after leaving Zumba 30 minutes into the class. I voiced my same concerns and he stated that ""No, they did not monitor the classes and that their had been no complaints and that there was no limit to the classes."" What?! There are fire marshal regulations as to sizes and how can he admit to not monitoring the classes? How can management not be aware of what is going on at their facilities? He even went so far to say that ""If we limit the class size I think we'd have more complaints, and you are only paying $10 a month."" As of this point I realized I was fighting a losing battle. I cannot comprehend how any gym would not value their members safety, or try to justify it by reminding me how cheap my membership is. I'm currently in the process of contacting the Fire Marshall, City of Pasadena and lucky for me, I have an old friend who is a Channel 2 news reporter.
I'm pretty sure there have been no complaints because I can guarantee most of the clientele at this gym has probably never had a gym membership before, don't speak fluent English and are either too young, or too old to speak up for what's right (or simply don't understand there are laws gyms have to follow). No one should have to sacrifice their safety, or ability to get a full, comfortable work out for the sake of them cramming more people in, and taking people's $10 monthly fee.
To make matters worse, they allow men to crowd around the windows looking into the room and stare creepily at the 99% women filled class. I remember at 24 hr if this occurred someone would walk over and ask the leering men to please not peer into the workout rooms and to continue on with their own workout, ushering them away. At least I felt safe knowing that management was concerned for the well being of all of their members. I don't feel safe going to this gym alone anymore and don't feel any of my concerns/ complaints have been taken seriously.
If you are considering a membership at Fitness Connection in Pasadena, please heed my warning. It is not worth it, and if you feel the same way I do, please complain to upper management or whomever you need to, to make sure your voice is heard. They will continue to allow poor service as long as their members allow it.
