Worst moving experience ever 7/28/2007

I have never dealt with a company that was as recklessly unprofessional as Fathers and Sons. After being given a quote and setting up a pick-up time, I was told a day before the scheduled move that the only acceptable form of payment was a cashier's check or cash, despite the fact that I was not guaranteed a price. They preferred cash, which made me nervous. Then, on the day of pick up they never showed up; after numerous calls to their office they told me they would be coming on Saturday morning. On Saturday morning when they did not show up and I called back they said that the truck was in Connecticut -- the pickup was in Massachusetts -- and they did not know when it would arrive to me. (This is the same thing they told me on Thursday.) They also said they did not know when the truck would get to its destination, and still would not tell me how much money I needed for them. It was an incredibly upsetting experience -- and now we are left with no furniture and still do not know when or how we will be able to do our move. I cannot tell you strongly enough how much I would warn you away from this company. \r \r Pros: There was not a single positive thing about this experience. Cons: They were unprofessional, dishonest, rude, and inconsiderate. more

Nightmare mover - just ask Google cache! 3/12/2007

They quoted $110 per hour including 1 hr. travel time. Minus a 10% senior discount. OK, sounded reasonable. When I was presented a contract at the outset it read $125 per hour. I called ""John"" in the Medford office from whence the crew (must say, an excellent crew - the crew chief told me that in his 16 yrs he often had to pay angry customers out of his own pocket!!!) came. He told me it was ""a misprint"". I then noticed a 10% ""fuel surcharge"" - gasoline was back down to $2.39 and it was 45 miles to the terminal.\r \r I called John again and complained no one had told me. He responded: ""Did you ask?"" Smart answer.\r \r The moving crew was about to leave. I contested the total because there was no Senior Discount indicated. I called John again and was told ""Oh, that's in Florida only"">\r \r John and I are finall going to meet. In small claims court.\r \r Please be warned.\r \r Peter Hopedale MA Pros: Wonderful crew of gentlemen Cons: ""Mistyped"" rate. 10% fuet surcharge not revealed. ""You didn't ask"". Welched on Senior Discount..""FL office only"" more

very unprofessional movers 2/2/2007

I had a horrible experience with these movers. I had to move unexpected because of a fire in my apartment building and called these guys to help. Given the circumstances, I wanted a mover that could pack up everything as well. They said they could do it and soon, so I hired them. On the schedule day, they showed up, but without any packing materials. They starting throwing my books into my trashcan and packing my desk items in my cat litter box. When they got to the kitchen and saw the glassware, they asked me to provide packing materials. I called the office to see if anything could be sent (as I specifically made sure this would be provided for). The people at the office told me very rudely that I would just have deal with; if I wanted them to pack my kitchen, I had to go buy materials (while they were on the clock). While I was gone getting supplies, they started packing my glassware in paper towels (my paper towels). In the end they broken many of my items, bent posters, punched holes in paper lanterns from Katmandu I've had for over 15 years and then, to top it all off, had the gall to ask for a tip!!!! I couldn't believe it. If I had known what I was paying for, I would have gladly moved myself. Pros: punctual Cons: no packing materials, damaged goods, rude office staff and movers more

Good moving experience! 7/30/2006

We just did a Cambridge-to-Cambridge move (on the last weekend of July) with Father & Son. It was a very positive experience --- here's what impressed me:\r - They showed up 10 minutes early.\r - They didn't bring an extra guy and try to convince us on the spot to include him in the job, like so many movers do. We contracted for a three man team, three guys came.\r - They worked hard in very hot weather for 5 hours, no breaks. The third guy helped move when the truck was loaded --- no sitting around waiting for boxes to come down.\r - Nothing broke, nothing was damaged.\r - Because of the short-distance move, we had already moved most of the light stuff ourselves; it was an all-heavy-stuff move. No complaints, no problems, they just got it done.\r - They cost a *lot* less per hour than the movers we called around Cambridge, Watertown, etc. The transportation time costs might have been a little higher than with a Cambridge-based mover, but over a five-hour move we definitely saved a lot of money (over $400 compared to some we called; the difference in rates is unbelievable).\r - We were finishing up with packing during the move, and when we ran out of equipment (boxes, tape) they hooked us up with enough to finish the job. \r All in all a very positive experience. Do the homework on rates and give these guys a call. more
