It has always been a challenge to find a great brunch in Raleigh. I finally found it today. The food was wonderful and service was good. Maybe all of the poor reviews helped, not...

Worst

This was my first experience at Vin and most likely my last. I was with a party of 6 and had reservations for 8:30 pm on Saturday, 8/2/08. We arrived a few minutes early to grab a...

What a great night 1/18/2007

I heard vin had changed its dinner menu and its prices so my friend and I headed over to check things out. My friend and I started with some pommes frites and a salad. both were excellent. we talked to our server about wine reccomendations and were very pleased with the outcomes. I had the duck confit and it was delicious. My friend had the mussels and they were also amazing. What a great night. Pros: Food, service, wine list Cons: parking more

Restaurant?...or Mausoleum??? 1/16/2007

I went with a friend to Sunday brunch. It was crowded, but we snagged a seat at the bar after about 10 minutes. We were barely acknowledged by the bar staff who finally took a drink order. Fresh oj made for a tasty screwdriver. But the look on his face was one of surliness and total lack of concern. The whole staff seemed so darn grim. Being in the restaurant business myself for years I understand how horrible a brunch shift can be, but this guy never even managed a smile. I had a bit of a special order---which came to me wrong. It was the kitchen's fault, not his. Otherwise, the food was very tasty. The bartender never inquired about my food, and the mistake was glaring so he could not have missed it. The empty plates were whisked away and the check was dropped without a word. This was my second trip to Vin and it was as bad as the first. So much for second chances. FROM THE SERVICE ALONE, I will not be going back. Somebody needs to take that staff in hand! more

Not as good as I hoped for 1/4/2007

Service was slow and food just wasn't what I hoped it would be. Overall it was alright, but I just expected better. more

Mmmmm... Delicious. 11/27/2006

I've liked all the dinner food I've ever tried here, and took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner last year, which was divine. The wine is great, the service was quick and friendly, and I *almost* couldn't get enough of the food -- of course I was stuffed by the time that I left. The desserts are good enough to make this place a dessert-and-wine-only destination if you choose to dine somewhere else, and my out-of-town friend was impressed.\r \r Brunch, however, sucked. But all brunch ever really is, is eggs, so if you must go out for eggs, what does it matter? Pros: good service, tasty wines, the soup!!! Cons: god, i hate brunch. here, but also anywhere. it's just eggs, people. more

Pleasant experience 11/1/2006

Went to Vin for the first time this weekend. I have no idea why we waited so long to go. Loved the food and all the little wine tastings to go along with it. I also liked the fact that our server was knowledgeable without being a mini sales-rep. Look forward to coming again. more

Save your money 10/9/2006

I have been to many restaurants and this one just didn't cut it on numerous levels. Let's start with the service. No, wait...I meant lack of service. Our waiter really couldn't have cared less if we would have been standing on our heads in a corner somewhere or sitting with glasses needing to be refilled. He simply didn't care. Kind of tough swallow with the prices they charge.\r Then comes the food. It was alright at best. The menu was very limited and extremely expensive. And then the price for a glass of wine on the menu was different from the price on my bill. Of course, my bill's price was higher for said glass. We ordered dessert and found it to be a way overpriced, cheap knockoff of a Cuban dessert called flan. A fancy and rich egg custard with caramelized sugar. Unfortunately, this dessert didn't make the grade.\r Finally, to add insult to injury, we sat outside and must have been next to a sewer pipe. Every ten minutes or so, this awful smell would come across the table. It was almost as if a Roto Rooter truck had gone by with an open valve which should have been shut.\r The bottom line is this...save your money. I picked out this restaurant to celebrate my wife's and my 26th year wedding anniversary. Luckily, I picked my wife a lot better than I did this restaurant. Pros: wine Cons: price, service, sewer smell outside where the tables are more

Couldn't even try it! 9/22/2006

We reserved an outside table for 4, so we could enjoy a special evening, but when we arrived at the appointed time we were informed that there would be a 30 minute wait for an outside table, since seating there was on a first come basis. There was one table free, but it was \r being set up for another group. We were offered an inside table, which I could not have tolerated because of the strong smokey cooking smell hanging about in the indoor section. It was suggested that we might have a cocktail at the bar, which would, of course, have the \r same problem. The final suggestion was to go somewhere else, have a drink, and come back. We did go somewhere else, and stayed for dinner, and we will not be going back, nor can we recommend anyone try Enotica Vin. We chose it carefully and deliberately, after hearing recommendations, and reading reviews. We were very disappointed by the fact \r that our specific reservation meant nothing - we could have just walked in off the street to check it out and been given the same options - there were many vacant tables inside, so \r what is the point in making a reservation? We had a delightful, smoke-free, outdoor-seated excellent meal elsewhere, and will never know what Vin has to offer.\r \r \r \r Pros: Convenient parking Cons: Ambience not evident, smokey smell inside, long wait for outside even with reservation more

Fantastic wine, excellent food. 8/25/2006

There aren't many places in Raleigh where you can get really good wine. This is one. Better still, the staff knows a lot about wine and can steer you to some very interesting varietals that go well with the food. The menu is somewhat offbeat, but all of the preparations are excellent. Only drawback is that you need a six-figure income to dine here regularly. Pros: Great wine, great food Cons: It sure ain't cheap more

Wonderful experience! 8/23/2006

I am very hard to please when it comes to restaurants, but Vin was the best dining experience I have had in Raleigh. I thought the service was excellent. Our waitress was very knowledgable and made great wine suggestions. The cheese plate and bread were divine and our entrees were fabulous. I never order chicken because it is usually boring, but the description of the chicken dish pulled me in - and it was NOT a disappointment. I loved this restaurant and would recommend it to anyone. Pros: food, wine selection, waitstaff more

Wine and cheese-- yum! 8/19/2006

Visiting from DC, we were amazed when we could have a table on the porch at 6:30 for just wine and cheese, without any disgruntled waiters. We each had two 1.5 ounce pours of wine and a cheese plate. The cheese plate was good (the soft cheeses excellent, the hard cheeses quite boring), and the bread was excellent. The wine was delightful, fresh, and well chosen, and having a few pours was quite nice. Total was about $30 with tip-- well worth it for a nice place and a nice experience. more

great atmosphere 8/15/2006

great atmosphere...loved the decor....great in the heart of glenwood south...food was excellent and wine LOVELY! Pros: great date dinner Cons: watch the price more

Fantastic Food, Great Atmosphere 7/12/2006

First visit to Vin last night after reading ALL the praises on egullet. We were a little conflicted; We've heard about is the great food, fantastic wine selection, but were somewhat hesitant after reading a few bad reviews on Citysearch about service. We went anyway and found the whole experience to be fantastic! Food was indeed wonderful, wine selection was great and service was good. Our waiter was helpful and efficient. I would not say he went out of his way to be friendly, but he was certainly not rude. The staff all work together to get food on your table as fast as possible, and everyone who came to our table was pleasant. This could be one of the top 10 restaurants in the triangle, in my opinion. If you haven't been, get on out there and try it. If you are not a very needy customer, you should find that the service is just fine too. Pros: Food; Use of Ingredients; Wine Variety (type and serving size) more

Horrible Service!!! 7/10/2006

Friends had suggested this as an excellent place to dine. However, going to a ""nice"" restaurant one would expect great service, as food and atmosphere are important. Great service is the key to the entire experience! Friends and I went on a not-so-busy Friday night and were ignored! When our waitress got around to taking our order (We had already been there for 45min.) she had the nerve to ask if we needed more time with the menu! After ordering, it took over an hour for our food to be served. I was so hungry I couldn't even enjoy it. My soup was cold, not that I think heat would have made a difference in taste. The base was sour, which was not expected from a ""Sweet"" corn chowder with crab. I was able to order one cocktail and never asked if I would have liked another. We had been discussing ordering some wine but were never given the opportunity to do so. After a lengthy discussion at the table we decided that the manager should be informed, so that such an issue would not occur in the future. The manager came over and couldn't have been bothered with our politely offered complaint. She never even attempted an apology which was perhaps the most shocking event of the evening. Pros: Blueberry Martini was excellent! Cons: Service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Awful service 7/8/2006

Four of us went to this restaurant on Saturday to treat ourselves and experience some delicious food and fine dining. Unfortunately, we received horrible service. Our waitress was rude and short with us, she took forever to get our drink orders from us. Took forever to get our food orders and then the food took an hour and a half to get to our table! The place was not busy and nobody even bothered to stop by our table to explain the delay. Nobody asked us how our food was. There were no common decencies! At the end of the meal we spoke with the manager and told her what kind of service we had received in a very nice manner. She simply looked at us and said ""Okay, that sounds bad,"" and knocked $25 off the bill. There was no apology. This restaurant obviously doesn't want anymore business from us and our friends. We are not the kinds of people who usually complain. We have all been waiters and waitresses in our past. We understand the pressure... this night was a disaster and not worth the money. Pros: Ambience Cons: Service more

expensive but wonderful 5/19/2006

what makes this place is the fabulous wine list - but of course that is what makes the bill so high! either get a bottle, or control the number of tastes. And you must order the molten chocolate cake - it is amazing! this is one of the few places in Raleigh that we feel is worth the drive (we live in Chapel Hill / Carrboro area) more

Good food, Bad service 3/24/2006

My friends and I went here for brunch a while back, and will never come back. The food was good, but the service was horrible. We were seated almost immediately, which seemed like a good sign, but then didn't see a server for fourty minutes after that. When she finally did show up, it was without apology and then consistently failed on all fronts. She couldn't manage her time at all, didn't know anything about the menu, and our coffee cups stayed mostly empty the entire time. She screwed up every order, and took forever to do anything at all. The brunch drinks were wickedly expensive, and tiny, however the food really was tasty, and decently-priced. Since that day we've heard that this was not a fluke experience-the service is always bad. Never going back. Pros: Good food, well-priced Cons: service, service, service more

Slightly disappointed 2/20/2006

Best in Raleigh? Well... We started with the devilled eggs, and the chicken liver pate. The eggs were excellent, creamy and piquant. The pate texture was good, but the flavor was bland, the theme of the evening. My husband chose the short ribs, which were tasty, although the pastry topping was so tough and flavorless he abandoned it. I had the chicken in butternut squash gravy. The chicken was well-presented, but there was no discernable flavor. I understand the chef believes in letting the flavors of the food speak, but this only works if the raw ingredients have a lot of natural flavor. It wasn't just that the flavors were subtle, they were undetectable. If I hadn't read the menu, I wouldn't have known what was on my plate. Dessert was an unimpressive chocolate creation. We will probably give it another try, but our expectations will be much lower. Pros: good location, plenty of parking, pleasant atmosphere Cons: tables too close, bland food, service just okay more

User review by tinarn 12/4/2005

I have never been disappointed with any meal at this restaurant. The chef, Ashley, is quite talented. The food is SO good!! I wish I could get there more often, but live out of town. I love good food and good wine. If you are in Raleigh, you must try this warm, relaxing restaurant. I felt I was in New York having dinner.... One of my favorite places to go. Service has always been excellent. Pros: The food is terrific. more

Best brunch in quite sometime 8/21/2005

The food was dynamite, the service was just fine and the ambiance is beautiful. I'll certainly return! more

best in the triangle 4/30/2005

On my last visit I had a wonderful experience. The service was outstanding and the food was the best I had ever had. the ingredients are local and fresh and that reflects in the taste. I really enjoyed their extensive wine list and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who has a passion for food and wine. more
