Sunflower bistro is, as the reviewer below me suggested, much better than any other of the restaurants in la grange. It is a beautiful little space with a menu that shows the chef''s competence in the kitchen. However, it is not at all brilliant, and this new menu is filled with items that are well prepared and somewhat enjoyable- but they fall short of fabulous. Though the chef shows he can cook, he hasn't shown the ability to create a menu that tantalizes. After several visits during the past few months, i can't say that i am eager to return. Visited sunflower bistro last weekend and had a GREAT time! It is refreshing to have a place like sunflower bistro in the area. They have a very wonderful way of making you feel special- the service is very accomodating and the menu is full of great surprises. Will be back soon! As a first time "food critic" I feel compelled to write about our experience and the Sunflower Bistro. Our first stop, the bar...kinda sporty, yet relaxing, the bartender made excellent cocktails. We felt welcome right away. From there we were seated in the main dining room for dinner. Our server, Tanya, was well informed and professional. The portion sizes were enough so that we could enjoy more than one course. Mary and Chris, the hosts, were accomodating and friendly. Courtesy was abundant. Looking forward to our next visit. Emilio's Sunflower Bistro offers an abundant wine list and offers many suggestions to accompany your meal, as well as dessert. My favourite dish from that evening was the Duck Confit and we both were completely taken by the cold mussel appetizer. We loved it!!! more

I remember when sunflower first opened and i thought their food was better than it is now. Some of the ingredients taste "store bought" and the combination of flavors are not exciting. There just throwing things together that wouldn't "conflict" with one another. But great cuisine is about making ingredients and flavors dance together. The dishes i've had of late at sunflower do not remind me of a well-choreographed number, but more like a bar with regulars going through the motions. Well i don't want a part of that. Sunflower Bistro is a lot better than any other restaurant in la grange. Some of the food i've had has been just terrific. I just wish everything i ordered was excellent. Some of the dishes just didn't do it for me. They were too simple and lacked excitement and uniqueness. Still, I venture back to la grange when i have the time because i know there's a chance that Sunflower will serve something exceptional like they are capable of. I just think that there are "fillers" on their menu that don't seem to have been made with great inspiration or creativity.. Maybe they're just getting a little stale. Emilio's tapas restaurants, despite their great success over the years, can hardly be thought of as purveryors of great cuisine. emilio clearly has shown tremendous business sense, but a judicious assessment of the food quality can only be that it is a "bit better than average", with the understanding that the average in the community is not necessarily very good. Sunflower Bistro, however, is a break away from that. More innovative, experimental, and fresh, Sunflower Bistro is a delight, with dishes ranging from good to exceptional. There is thought and care behind the seasonal menus developed by the chefs who display a far broader repertoire and skill than displayed by the chefs at the traditional Emilio's tapas establishments. The prices as well are quite reasonable and I honestly cannot think of a better restaurant in terms of value in the suburbs or city. The waitstaff and bushelp, as well, are well trained and meticulous in their rendering of service. I was especially pleased by this. Though I have encountered a few "duds" over the past year (i've been going to sunflower for about 2 years, now), i have also delighted in dishes that simply dazzle. This is the best that la grange has to offer, and among the very best in the southwest suburbs. Thank you Emilio for bringing the Sunflower Bistro to the South Suburbs - a culinary desert. Co-Owner chefs Chris and Mary have done a masterful job with this restaurant. My favorite is the braised lamb shank. Also, seafood seems to be a speciality. Most entrees are under $20 and appetizers under $10. If you are noise-adverse, try a earlier or later reservation. Very ofetn Mary or Chris will serve you them selves. There is a real team spirit here. A fun place with happy patrons. Pros: Lamb Shanks Cons: Can be noisy, but everyone is happy! more
