My first time at this place and it won't be the last the gumbo was great spicy and good not crazy about the cornbread the catfish was not greasy coleslaw had an interesting flavor, will go back love this place best I've had. Pros: not crowded Cons: parking more

worth the wait 11/7/2005

this place is one of my favorites in the city. good food, good service. long waits, yes, but I know to expect it and it's worth the wait. my favorites are the fried green tomatoes and blackened catfish. I don't really like the desserts, because I don't like peach cobbler, but everyone else does. Pros: great food, great service Cons: long wait more

I come 260 miles for the Fried Green Tomatoes 7/21/2005

Whenever I'm in Chicago, the first place I go to eat is the Dixie Kitchen. I usually try to squeeze two to three visits when I'm there. I think I come to Chicago for this wonderful best kept Chicagoland secret. The food has always been great, flavorful, fresh and presented by delightful servers. The deserts are awesome and overfilling!!! I usually order the catfish which always comes out fried to perfection. But its the fried green tomatoes.. they are great!! I recommend this restaurant and the tomatoes to everyone who visits Chicago.. its a must visit even before you go to the Navy Pier. Pros: food, servers Cons: Parking more

BEST FRIED GREEN TOMATOES!!! 7/8/2005

The atmosphere is great....it's small and reminds you of an actual southern kitchen. The fried green tomamtoes are delicious!!!! That is the main dish that I go there for. The johnny cakes are good as well as the catfish (very good propotion). The sides are ok (the greens need hot sauce added to them to give them that umph). The drinks are good.....the iced teas, the peach drink (with alcohol) is marvelous...the way that they serve drinks from jars is really fun! A++++ Rating! Pros: Fried Green Tomatoes, Drinks & Catfish, Small & Interesting Cons: Bland side dishes, Wait is long more

Hidden in Hyde Park 7/1/2005

You must try the fried green tomatoes, the best in Chicago. Johnny Cakes, corn meal pancakes, are heavenly soft, rich and sweet with some creamy honey butte on them. Crawfish Etouffe is full of wonderful spicey, sweet flavors. The best side dishes are the black eyed peas, red beans and greens. Fried catfish fillets are coated with corn meal, but not too hard. and arenutty and sweet. Pros: Good Value, Satisfying Cons: Difficult to find, Crowded for lunch more

I'm hooked! 1/21/2003

I frequent the new Lansing location. I live in Indiana, so this is most convenient for me. The fried green tomatoes are a wonderful thing. The peach-glazed chicken wings are addictive. The catfish fried to perfection. Seafood cakes are in a delicious league of their own. I don't even mind the often long wait to be seated because I know that I'm in store for a treat. On the down side: the corn muffins are dry(so eat the johnny cakes instead); the greens are a bit boring and the red beans and rice is bland. That being said, Dixie Kitchen is one of my favorite eateries. It's becoming one of my casual ""let's meet up for dinner"" recommendations. Portions are huge. I always have to take food home. Even my teenage son, the bottomless pit, can't finish his meal. Pros: Fried green tomatoes, Peach-glazed wings, Inexpensive Cons: Crowded, Red beans and rice, Corn muffins more

Try The One in Evanston 8/5/2002

I haven't eaten at the Dixie's in Hyde Park, but the on in Evanston has great food and good service. The fried green tomatos are worth driving to Evanston for alone; they are fried good, hard and hot with a dash of hot sauce; ummm good. The fried chicken is good; but the greens didn't have enough smoked flavor to them. The johnnie cakes (or hot water cornbread) is the bomb too. The fried catfish couldn't have been better; but the iced tea was very comforting and you sweetened it yourself. The mac and cheese was great as well. We have to take our food home cause we couldn;t eat it all. Now; the dessert; the peachcobbler was just like my grandmom makes it. The peaches are sweet; and the juice is runny and sweet; you can taste the butter and sugar in it; very, very good. Pros: Fried Green Tomatoes, Johnnie Cakes, Good Parking Cons: Small and Crowded, Need Reservations, Greens flat more
