Brought my niece and my son to sight in a couple new scopes on my old rifles. We had a blast!! had them bore sight my 30.06, i had just purchased the scope and perch kit at Dicks and it didn't look right to me so i had him take a look at it. he picked it up and instantly said ""the front perch is wrong"" he installed the proper one from his stock and bore sighted it for 20 bucks. I grew up on a farm and have hunted all my life. my father retired from Federal after 45 years. these are the kind of people you want to have around when you shoot. it's not a comedy club, they are serious about what they do and they do it well. I'll be back. more

I have been going to this range for over 30 years, Howard is one the finest and most honest man you will ever meet. I also brought my daughter there many times to let her learn to shoot, learn gun safety, and make some noise !! I love the place.\r more

Wow.... Some of these critiques are coming from left field... I have been going here for years and true enough it's not pretty, does not serve latte nor cookies and it definitely does not patronize anyone... but there again... it's a shooting range - not a school, not a bar, not a social hangout (unless your there with one of the instructors). \r I have never been treated anyway but nice while there and many of my friends go there to sight in their guns and shoot. \r By the way.... a Range Master is there to insure the safety of all the shooters and not there to chat and whisper sweet nothings to people. I appreciate an attentive Range Master doing his job.... \r Mr. Dietz and others that are there are indeed ""colorful"" and truly interesting to chat with when they have the time... Rustic... oh yea... but there's nothing wrong with that... in fact... if it wasn't for us ""rustic"" folk you preppies wouldn't look like you do....\r \r If you don't have anything nice to say... just put a picture of yourself at the end of the range....\r \r DA more

this is to Jack,, i have never been to Dietzs Range,, but you must remember one thing when dealing with people who know guns and then those that think the know guns..being nice around loaded guns is a fairy tale..you must also build up your instructors trust in you..(in other words does this guy or gal know what they are doing..) a gun line instructor has to command respect from his students..that is the only way to control a gun line,.. you are worried about the F-bomb..around kids,, how many times did you go there. I would rather see a crusty old croner as and instructor upsetting learners than dead friendly ones..because of student who just does not understand..""why"" i have spent 21 yrs as a gun line instructor..dont tell me about being nice. it will get you hurt or killed.. more

Obviously, you need to learn some communication skills. You can't spell (""fill"" like an idiot, if ""your"" new, he made it ""worst""), you can't get along with people (they will piss you off), and you probably can't shoot. I've been shooting there for years and thoroughly enjoy myself every time I go. The ""old German man"" has given me valuable advice over time and has made me a better marksman, for sure. They have been around longer than you have and probably longer than your dad has. Stay home. more

Great Range 2/10/2012

I just recently visited Dietz by first time and I like it. The people were friendly and I had no problems of any kind. The place is rustic as they advertise in the webpage so when I got there is what I expected. The range master was not very talkative but he wasn’t rude either. I grew up shooting guns in the countryside and this range is like going back in time. This place is for people who like the outdoors and appreciate to be left alone to shoot at your own pace. Those indoor Shooting Ranges where the tell you when to grab the gun, when to put your finger in the trigger, when to press the trigger, are for the city people that have no idea what the outdoors is all about. Right now I’m a professional working in an office and been able to go to a range like this is just very relaxing. Now for those of you badmouthing this place, it’s so simple, if you don’t like it here don’t come back. Just go find yourself a nice indoor range to go shoot your shinny guns. This place is for people who like it as it is. more

Nothing wrong here... 2/1/2012

Ok, the sign for unloading the gun is obvious. You take a loaded gun to a gunsmith , prepare to be chewed out. That's common sense. After reading these reviews before I went to this range I was skeptical. I have been to the range twice now in the last 2 weeks. These people were friendly and helpful. Have no idea how they got these bad reviews. Great place. Took my 14 year old son and had a good time. Maybe if you don't know the difference between a trigger and a barrel you may have a problem, but these were good people. Sounds like the negative posters probalbly did something stupid or unsafe to warrant the supposed treatment they got. I would bet they deserved it..... more

THIS GUN RANGE IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS WHAT SO EVER! OLD MAN DIETZ IS RUDE! IF YOUR NEW YOUR A OUTSIDER! THE OLD GERMAN MAN WORKING THE BENCH AREA IS THE RUDEST PERSON YOU WILL EVER TALK TO! IF YOU ASK A QUESTION HE TRIES TO MAKE YOU FILL LIKE A IDIOT, HOWEVER HE PARKS HIS TRUCK NEXT TO BENCHES AND DRINKS OUT OF IT! MR. DIETZ HAS NO IDEA HOW TO RUN A RANGE! DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING, THEY WILL PISS YOU OFF! NOT REALLY SURE HOW THEY MADE IT THIS LONG! IVE BEEN 3 TIMES AND PISSED OFF EVERYTIME I LEAVE! AFTER COMPLAINING TO OLD MAN DIETZ HE MADE IT WORST! HES A IDIOT! DONT GO! DONT GO! NOT A COOL PLACE! AND THEY LET SOME IDIOT DROP F BOMBS AROUND KIDS , WHEN I ASKED HIM TO STOP HE SAID HE WAS A REGULAR, WTF DOES THAT MEAN! FREAKIN IDIOT! OLD MAN DIETZ THOUGHT THAT WAS OK! WTF! more

Great Range 12/27/2011

I shoot at Dietz about once a month. I like this range because it is private and nobody bothers you. The range safeties leave you alone too. It is also great for the price. $10 will let you shoot all day, but even better yet, it is only $1.00 if you're military. That's well worth it in my opinion. My only issue with this range is that they only take cash, no debit or credit cards. So if you want to go shooting there, make sure you stop and buy plenty of ammo before you go, or take cash if you want to buy anything else while you're there. I've read a lot of negative comments about the staff at Dietz. I will say that I have never felt disrespected by any of them. The range safety knows his stuff. If you have any issues with your weapon, he can fix it for you. However, he has a very deep German accent, and doesn't hear so well in my opinion, so I have had communication issues with him in the past. It just takes some patience and thick skin. The other range safety that occasionally works there has a foul mouth, but that has never bothered me. (I do too) I think it adds to the character of the range. If foul language is an issue for you, then here's your fair warning. I say that because people take their kids out there. As for the guys who work inside, they have always provided satisfactory service. Don't get my wrong, no one is sitting at the door waiting to greet you with cookies, but they always get you in and out as quick as possible. It's a good range. I recommend it. more

Customer Service here means b!tching you out - I mean that. 12/27/2011

There is a sign that hangs on the door to Dietz's that reads, ""$20 charge for unloading any gun."" There's a reason for that - because after talking with anyone there (save the older woman who was very friendly) you'll want to empty your gun in the shop! Old Man Dietz is the crappiest individual I've ever met, and his assistant likes to make you the butt of jokes...to your face. I swear; Ghandi would rethink his stance on non-violence after dealing with those two.... That being said, if you're ""lucky"" (HA!) enough to have them do any work on your gun, don't expect to have them explain what they did...or check your gun to make sure it works properly...or for that matter do anything more than pay them and immediately leave. Honestly, it surprises me that those people have made it to that age with how they treat others.... These folks are absolute soup (gun) nazis. Anyway - aside from the satisfaction I get from imagining where they'll end up in the afterlife - Dietz's gunsmithing really is 3rd-rate, and the range isn't anything special...but then again we're talking about a gun range - it's a bench, some targets down range, and berms.... How much more exciting does a range need to get? more

Did not feel welcome 6/9/2011

We visited Dietz for the first time last week ... I think it will be our last. First, the place is a Texas trailer dump. Zero class. Even the single-lane rode into the place is a mess. We could overlook all that, but the deal-breaker was the sour looks and strange personalities of the staff. No one was the least bit friendly to us newcomers and no one was helpful. We got the impression that this was a hangout for locals, and we were intruding. The range master acted annoyed when we asked him where we should go to shoot our shotguns, and he just grunted and pointed in the general direction of the end of the range. A little personality would go a long way, guys! The lone clay pigeon kiosk was in use, so there was nothing for us to shoot at ... no targets, barrels, boxes, stones -- nothing for our $10 a head. None of us enjoyed the experience. more

tis' a great range 6/4/2011

jskeen56 is right on the money - goto bracken or cedar ridge if you want to be treated like an idiot - I have properly and safely used firearms for many, many years . - took my children to Dietz and bought a family membership. We always go back - the range master is courteous and does a great job maintaining safety without talking to you like you are a moron like cedar ridge does. You can shoot handgun, rifle and shotgun at Dietz..This range serves its functional purpose and does it like a range should. PS> in re: the prior comment, I am originally what you would call a yankee, and I assure you, I am far, far, far from liberal. God Bless Texas!............theBishop more

Great Range! 1/1/2011

The range master stays out of your business, but keeps a watchful eye from a distance. No one screams at you for firing your handgun at a rate of greater than one round every two seconds. (That's right, Bracken, I'm talking about you! DO NOT GO TO BRACKEN!!!!) Dietz is managed more like a gun range than a boot camp. I go to Dietz when I want to shoot one of my rifles or handguns, and enjoy my sport. I go to other ranges when I want to be made to feel like an idiot who hasn't been using firearms for recreation for over twenty years. more

Yankees Go Home 8/3/2010

I shoot at Dietz several times a month. The only thing wrong is when you yankee bastards show up! Go home! Stop breeding! more

Fantastic Gun Range 6/24/2010

Sounds like your plugging your (special friend) Jerry.\r And I doubt seriously you have one eighth the experience you claim, it shows in your retoric.\r We here around the lake are a hoard of very proud survivalists and we don't need your Bostonion attitudes here. Personally I have never seen a weapon handleing mistake in my life at Dietz range. And the Range Master is not the type to stay on your case, but have no mistake, he will remove a violator from the premises if he sees a safety issue. The gentlemen who run the place welcome information on any safety issues. And they will jump to resolve the problem. They can also provide you with endless years of weapons knowledge from load data to early firearms and Black powder questions. And yes I can shoot one of my many AK-47s there. Never fired and only dropped once. So keep your Yankee keister at home or go visit Bandera gun range. Now theres a place to remember. Need a beer while you shoot skeet? Wanna try out that new gas chamber in your AK? Get real and go home Pros: Good Local, Knowledgable staff. Supplies Galore Cons: The Bad Review I Read In This Thread by serram1025 more

Very Good Range 11/27/2009

This is an excellent range. Good covered firing positions with both a pistol and rifle range. Very friendly owners with a well stocked range shop and gunsmith. Male/Female Restrooms in a small building next to the pistol lanes. Range firing line controlled by shooters - which is appropriate considering many customers have extensive military/Special Forces/Marine or law enforcement background. If you are new or unfamiliar with safely operating on a civilian range; simply ask the staff or fellow shooters for advice. Strongly recommend this range to all active duty military. I have 20+ yrs military/infantry experience and have shot at ranges in almost every state. Pros: Lots of covered firing positions at multiple distances. Cons: None. more

Friendly owners 11/11/2009

This place is completely safe. It is close to New Braunfels and the owners are extremely friendly. Everytime I've ever gone it has been very safe. No, there isn't a lot of formality at the pistol range, but everybody practices safety. If I ever saw anything unsafe, I wouldn't hesitate to let the owners know and I know they would act promptly. Pros: Very laid back and safe more

Great range!! 12/8/2008

I've been using Dietz's since I was a little guy and absolutely LOVE the place. I've been to many ranges including countless numbers of ranges while serving in the Army.\r \r I like the relaxed atmosphere of the pistol range and in the many many times I have frequented it there has NEVER been an issue. Could something happen? Sure it could just like at ranges that have range Nazis that love to yell at people and disallow rapid fire or holster draw. You could also get slammed by a concrete truck on the way to the range. I like being able to take my wife and little ones up close to the targets for training. As with anything in life COMMON SENSE applies. \r \r The rifle range is great as it has 25yd, 50yd, 100yd, and 200yd distances with lots of firing benches. There is a ""range master"" on the rifle range. They also allow FMJ ammo on the rifle range that quite a few ranges do not so you can actually shoot that SKS, AK47, AR....... instead of letting sit in your gun safe at home.\r \r So for the previous reviewer....... Please don't show up again because it sounds like you want someone to hold your hand and tell you when and how to shoot your pistol. Stay in San Antonio and leave New Braunfels for the natives. That'll leave more room for me, my family, and my friends that have been using that range for years.\r \r Oh yeah, work on that grammer a bit will ya?\r \r Pros: Great range more

Bad Experience & Safety Hazard at Dietz 5/25/2008

My experiences with Shooting Ranges go back to nearly 25 years. I attended many competitions and participated in organized sports shooting tournaments in my past. Dietz was an experience as far as Safety & Organizational of site to be a major accident to happen. The state of Texas should be looking into setting standards to regulate safety and guidance for shooters wanting to have a good experience. I will start off with the range having no restrictions and having someone enforcing safety. Their pistol range is a free for all to walk downrange and inspect their targets, while hoping that the other shooters have some command sense not to shoot. There are no safety walls to protect you while kids are loading guns pointing towards other shooters, instead of pointing downrange. Dietz should visit Texas Thunder Range and learn to run a safe and accident free shooting range like Texas Thunder. I would not recommend for anyone to take your sons, daughters or spouse to be exposed to an accident. I think their range master have their heads buried in the dirt overall. Yes, it could be CHEAP to shoot at Dietz, but take some body armor if you don?t want to be a victim. I think Jerry from Texas Thunder Range has nothing to worry about Dietz getting my business ever again. more
