Editorial review from Citysearch 11/6/2012

This review does come with one caveat: I'm a semi-vegetarian, so barbecue places generally don't cater to me. I do eat fish, however, and these days that means I can find something that appeals to me in most restaurants. At Danny's, the catfish sandwich was the only entree option that meets my veggies and fish standards. It tasted okay, because the catfish was deep-fried and sandwiched between two pieces of heavily buttered Texas toast. Needless to say, I felt really unhealthy and lethargic after eating. Sometimes a completely unhealthy and indulgent meal is worth it, but this one wasn't tasty enough to warrant all the fat and calories. To top it off, the atmosphere is really strip-mall, and ""family."" All that said, the service is pretty good, and if you like filling up on loads of fried food, including lots of meat, you might enjoy it more than I did. more

Rude! 5/3/2012

We really liked this place for a while but after our recent experience we will never go back. People, this isn't a ""family"" establishment DO NOT let its down home appearance fool you. Horrible service, nasty owner. We will NEVER go back. We were treated SO badly and even when I told them it would affect our decision to dine there again and said this has been our favorite spot for a long time we were told they didn't care and don't bother coming back. Obviously they don't value long term relationships with their customers. I was in SHOCK. more

Lots of better choices around 3/21/2011

Mediocre meats, indifferent service and overpriced. I can't think of a single reason to return to any of this mini-chain's three locations set in suburban strip malls. While they do offer Texas-style beef brisket, a rarity in these parts, none of their meats are notably good. The brisket was less than remarkable and the Carolina pulled pork was greasy and thoroughly unappetizing. And the staff seemed to be on autopilot, never asking if we were satisfied or even offering a thanks when they presented the bill at the meal's end. We received our bill and were simply told, ""They can take that at the cash register."" Danny's offered a wide variety of sauces including a catchup-like tomato sauce, an odd tasting mustard-based sauce and a very poor rendering of Eastern Carolina vinegar sauce. All were disappointing. I've got to wonder how this place had grown to three locations and achieved some recognition in the area when there are so many other authentic BBQ spots where they have a real pit smoker going that you can smell when you get near them. Try The Pit or Clyde Coopers in Raleigh, or Bullocks in Durham for authentic BBQ. more

Great food, service, and prices 2/23/2011

I went to NC for a Flyers game. I knew before I left I wanted BBQ. When I got down there a few local people recommended Danny's so I gave them a try. The food was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The staff was very friendly even though I was wearing my Flyers shirt and hat on game day. It was so good that I went back the next day for lunch before I left. Both days I had the 3 meat combo and baked beans. The waitress remember my order from the previous day. The only thing that didn't stand out were the french fries. Nothing bad, but not special in any way. If you are in or near Cary, NC Danny's is a great choice. more

If you want comments, don't make them so difficult to enter. It simply isn't worth it. What kindergarten did your web developers go to? Cons: city search is one hideous piece of junk more

Great food, apathetic service 11/14/2009

We ordered take out BBQ (a large order) and when I came to pick it up the people at the counter seemed uninterested and almost bothered when I asked questions about the order and requested sauce. The staff was not making any effort to be helpful. The BBQ is good but the service is poor. Pros: the BBQ is very good Cons: service was apathetic more

Forgettable at Best 5/14/2008

Even after setting my base standard at ""BBQ Restaurant in a Cary strip mall,"" I still cannot in good faith say many good things about Danny's. The banana pudding was pretty good, the texas toart tased like toast, which I like, the corn was decent too. However, the BBQ was severely lacking in taste and consistency, the hushpuppies were terrible, and I couldn't find any Texas Pete anywhere. Steer clear. Pros: Fast service, decent deserts Cons: Horrible BBQ, Horrible hushpuppies, rude service more

Skip It if you can! 1/22/2008

We'll anybody see the Beard on the guy that handles the ""cooked food ""at the Ashville Ave location? It is ZZ-Top Calibre and I do not think with no him having no rubberbands, a net or any protection I will eat there again. No offense, but isn't that a health violation? The BBQ is OK, if you like the very strong artificial smoked flavor. It is a little overpowering and hides the natural pork flavor. In addition they offer no hot sauce except there own which in itself defeats the Eastern North Carolina Style by being to SAUCY. That being said, the vinigar bottle on the table is just plain vinigar and they provide Industrial Grade Ketchup, not name brand. Common Guy's it would take so little for you to get me to 3 or 4 stars, for Cary anyway. This place has a captive lunch following because they are across from Regency, it would not be there if it didn't. more

No atmosphere but great, inexpensive BBQ 12/3/2007

I see several people have been upset by the service. I don't know if those experinces were in the Cary store or the RTP location. Don't let that stop you, it is rare. The place is not fancy, just a nice small town, family owned restaurant with very good BBQ. I've been going for 24 years, ever since I moved to Cary and I've never been dissatisfied with the lunch or dinner. more

Stay away from this restaurant! 9/8/2007

Do yourself a favor and stay away from this restaurant. The place was filthy and the service was lousy. I spoke with the owner about these issues and he couldn't care less. more

Worth a try anyway 8/27/2007

This restaurant came highly recommended, but will not be on my must haves. The food was OK. Nothing really to write home about. I'm from Texas, and I do not think this was Texas BBQ, even though the claims are there. The hush puppies were good! The potato salad was made with sour cream - yuck. The green beans were nothing spectacular either. Overall, this was just a place to eat if you're in the area and want a bbq sandwich - though would not go out of my way to go there. Pros: OK food Cons: OK food, location more

Never Again 4/16/2007

We went to Danny's with friends that highly recommended it. I ordered ribs - I was almost done with the ribs when I noticed a steel staple sitting in the sauce on my ribs. I commented to the waiter regarding the staple and advised he might want to be sure it didn't happen to other customers that might not have noticed it (such as a child). He adivsed it could not happen because they did not use staples - well I didn't bring it with me and there it was! Upon checking out I mentioned it to the man behind the counter, who I think was the owner - he again stated it could not happen - no apology, no nothing! Needlessness to say I was quite put out and when I got home I wrote a letter to the company stating what had happend and how I was treated. I got no reply to my letter. In my way of thinking this is no way to run a business - I at least deserved a reply. My friends were embarrassed at the respond that I got and I will NEVER go there again and will NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone I know. I appreciate the opportunity to express my disappointment in the handling of this situation. more

Don't go if you like people being nice to you 3/6/2007

I stumbled across this page and felt I needed to write this as I see others have had similar experiences. Soon after I heard of Danny's I went quite regularly until I had a run-in with a man behind the counter who I feel was the owner. My dad and I collect coins and for Christmas one year he gave me some Sakagawea (gold) dollar coins. On this busy lunch visit to Danny's everything was great and I went to the register to pay. I handed the lady 5 or 6 coins to pay for lunch and the man beside her barks out ""I don't want those things."" At first I was sort of confused and thought he might be joking because the statement seemed so out of place but the lady kind of stopped and didn't say anything. I gathered myself and said that my dad gave them to me for Christmas and his response was ""Well take 'em back to your dad because I don't want' em!"" At this point I'm getting mad but I was with a friend who gets embarrassed at public displays so I still tried to keep my cool. It went back and forth a few more times before I finally said that I was paying with these or not paying, handed them to the lady who gave me my change. All the while this guy is still mouthing off! To this day I kick myself for not flipping out in front of everybody in the restaurant over this treatment. We've all had good and bad experiences at restaurants and stores but this was far and away the worst I have ever been treated. I'm glad business is so good you can act like a school yard bully when interacting with your satisfied, paying customers. One more point. Through the whole exchange, he never looked me in the eye. Chump. I will continue to tell this story every chance I get in the hopes that people will find another restaurant where the owner appreciates the customers. more

Best BBQ 11/10/2006

Danny's is a very quaint little BBQ place. No frills on the atmosphere but has great food. Great hushpuppies! Pros: food Cons: parking more

Refused to take a Citipass coupon 10/11/2006

This afternoon my co-workers and I went to Danny's for lunch. While I was there I though I would buy and extra meal for dinner and use my new Citipass coupon book I purchased from the local school. I told the waitress I had the coupon and asked her if it was ok to get the extra meal to go and she said sure. When I went up to pay the owner was running the cash register not only told me I could not use the coupon, apparently he advertises to upport the school but does not honor them, but he acted as if I was trying to rip him off. He was so rude my co-wokers thought he was joking at first. He even told me I was lying when I said the waitress told me I could use it. I will never return to Danny's again. Pros: BBQ is not bad Cons: I make better myself and don't need the rude owner callin me a liar. more

much needed relief 5/24/2006

After moving to NC several years ago, and the shock I received when I discovered what people here called ""barbeque,"" Danny's is a welcome relief to my palate. It has variety (you can get something besides shredded pig!) and a range of sauces, including the vinegar-based sauce so many locals like. It's not a fancy place but it's a good place. One of my favorites! more

Good food - Great Service 2/8/2006

I have been to Danny's two times. Their chopped pork is their best offering. I found the brisket to be a little dry. Danny's offers 4 kinds of sauces at the table. Very clean, great friendly service. Portions are a great value. Sides are good, especially the baked beans. Banana pudding for dessert. Yum! Pros: Great Food, Great Service, good location more

Best in the Area 2/2/2006

Danny's Bar-B-Que is the best Bar-b-Que we have found in the Cary/Morrisville/Apex Area. We fell in love with the taste and service and continue to support this business and hope they continue to make Great BBQ. Pros: Friendly, Quality, Easy seating more

Alright...Not ""Real"" Barbecue 1/17/2006

This is a quick place to get descent food. The barbecue is Florida style, which I particulary aren't a big fan of. Service is good with really nice workers. If you're looking for a great place to eat NC barbecue and get FREE hushpuppies...Dannys is NOT the place. Pros: Nice Service, Quick Cons: Florida Barbecue, No Free Hushpuppies more
