I have been taking my cats to Critter Care for 14 years. I have taken feral cats, stray cats and also my own house cats. Dr. Portugal has always treated my animals very professionally, even the ferals and strays that I have had to bring in. She treated one of my cats who had asthma and diabetes. To help me save money, she taught me to give this cat injections so I wouldn't have to bring him in for shots every three weeks. With her care, this cat lived over 7 years, which he wouldn't have considering he had both conditions simultaneously. She has always been compassionate and kind when I have had to euthanize any of them for cancer, feline leukemia, stroke, emphysema and other terminal diseases. She even met me at her office one Sunday night at 11:00 p.m. to treat my asthmatic cat who would have died from the severe asthma attack he was having. Each time I have been in her waiting room, the people I met there were very happy with her service. Many of them have been bringing their animals to her for years. I'm sorry but the positive reviews here are extremely hard to believe that they were written by actual satisfied customers who were happy with "Dr. Lori Portugal" and her staff service. I just cannot believe that. If they were written by authentic clients and not shills, then they either have extremely low expectations or need their head examined. Seriously.\r \r The staff that is employed there are so rude it is jaw dropping. They all need attitude adjustments, maturity and a course on human decency. Clearly they have no regard for clients and act as if they're doing you a huge favor since you're bothering them. Smacking your lips while blowing huge bubblegum bubbles is so unprofessional. UPDATE:\r \r I spoke with Capital One & they are very apologetic about what occurred. I just spent the last 4 hours on the phone with the fraud department so I can get paperwork without it having to obtain a subpoena via mt lawsuit/attorney. You see, it's difficult to track down a phone call that I made yesterday that I reported that I found her card because its not my account, its hers and I don't expect them to talk to me about HER account. So, what Corporate is doing is starting Monday, they are tracking down my number and are going to send me the data showing that I called from my cell number, the date and time. This WILL show and PROVE I did in fact report that I found her Credit Card, but like I said, they cannot discuss with me details, all that requires a subpoena, which I am going to obtain via my lawyer. Lord Lord Lord! I honestly am speechless. I feel like copy/pasting what I said about this place (Critter Care) on another review board. My hope is it, along with other peoples reviews reaches as many people as possible.\r \r One thing I will say up front, NOTHING better happen to my Bunny. That is for dayum sure! Critter care is an honest and compassionate vetrinary practice. Dr P has treated our family's pet from chinchillas to mastiffs. They do a great job! more

We've used Dr. Portugal for some years, beginning with a hedgehog and ""graduating"" to cats, so we have come to have great faith in her. She takes care of our ""well kitty"" visits, and had already proven her worth when a stray cat we took in a few years ago who had serious problems was brought around to be healthy and strong again and lives a very ""privileged"" life now! Our latest experience was with our daughter's cat who we were babysitting and who began to lose weight at an alarming rate, was throwing up several times a day, was not his usual loving self. After examination and testing, Dr. Portugal correctly diagnosed pancreatitis, which condition also involves the liver. It's only now that we know just how grave his situation was, but over the last four months in Dr. Portugal's expert care, he has gradually turned the corner to being a healthy kitty once again. We are close to not having to medicate any more! Dr. Portugal is kind, has a heart for animals and their well-being, will go the extra mile and beyond, is extremely knowledgeable, and has a refreshing way with owners and animals alike. Likewise, her staff is welcoming, warm and personable. We'd say Critter Care is a Thorndale treasure!! more

horrible vet!!! Long story short... took my dog there for vomiting, was told she had pancreatitis... (treatable), was told she would be fine. The next day i went to visit, was told her kidneys were shutting down, but would get a medication ordered to help with that... it was a reaction to the first medication given for pancreatitis. By the third day, i went in to visit (unannounced) and was looked at like i had three heads. When they brought my dog out, she was so swollen and wouldn't even look at me... The employee who walked her out (we knew personally) and their comment to me was, "between me and you, i would get your dog out of here, take her somewhere else". We did right then and there, ended having to put her down that night at the other vet.... Her body had started shutting down... She was only 2. If you love your pets do not take your animal to Critter Care located in Thorndale, PA. I took my cat there on Friday and they gave me all the medicine to give to him. I spent over $300.00 that day. When I woke up the next day the cat had died. This is the worse veterinary hospital in the Chester county.They should have kept him over night. My animals now go to Animal Clinic which is also located in Thorndale,PA and they are the best. more

Giving it a 1 star is to much. I took my outside cat to her in aug 2010. She said the teeth all had to be removed due to infection in the gums and rotten teeth. End of Nov he stopped eating, after telling her his symptoms she treated him for sinus infection, We kept taking him back with no improvement and she kept giving him more meds. Not once did she mention that it could be coming from infection in his gums. On 1/5/11 I found him bleeding from the mouth, took him to another vet where she noticed sweeling and said the blood was coming from his K9. This vet only saw him once and knew right away where the problem was coming from. Did Lorie Portugal know that this was coming from gum infection due to the k9 that she left in his gum ?? I think so. I then took him to a specialist where I was told his gums were full of infection and some teeth were just broken off at the gum line. Giving this place 1 star is being kind!\r Worst ever....Bogus bills, and lawsuits. That's her practice, rip you off and sue you. Wonder if anyone ever been successful in an appeal?? Somehow I doubt it, but I will be looking into it for sure. more

I do not know how this woman keeps a legitimate practice. That place is a pig stye and she should have her license revoked!! I sat in the waiting room while she examined a cat which proceeded to urinate on the floor. She wiped it up with a cloth from her pocket.....I walked out and would STRONLY recommend others follow suit. more

This Vet is mean and downright cruel. She tries to rip you off on the bill and has a dirty smelly environment. Dr. Lorie Portugal should have her practice closed for her bad treatment to animals as well as people. It is a wonder who would write a glowing report about this "Vet" ever?\r I have heard multiple stories of people she tries to sue about their bill. She killed my dog!!! I feel for all the reviews I have read about Critter Care, so I went with my guard up. Take what everyone says about the smell VERY true!!! (wow, that's one bad smell) After calling around to other Vets, they had the price that fit to get 'Romeo' fixed. He's also known as "gimpy" because was missing about 3 inches of his back foot. This was causing him to be in such pain because of what I thought were ingrown toenails. Long story short, in one short work day Romeo had his manhood taken and his foot repaired. It's 3 weeks later and he's back to being his playful kitty self. It was worth the 30 min drive from Phoenixville! more

I have had several bad experiences with this vet clinic. First of all I am a graduate from CAT Brandywine, animal science and technology. I am currently attending delval and I am working to become pre vet. So i know a thing or two about animals and animal care. \r My first experience occured when i took my dog in because he suddenly lost about half his body weight. when i took him in the vet treated me like some kind of animal abuser. He kept making comments about starving my dog and not changing his water bucket enough because his weight lost was due to him drinking stagnant water (which took to overnight stays to figure out) in my defense i didnt know my dog was drinking stagnant water he must have been drinking the water from out pound. He was fed everyday and had 30lb bucket of clean water provided everday. after she medicated him he didnt act like himself. He put all the weight back on but he was having a hard time moving around (he was 10) so we took he back looking for answers. T more

I have been taking my 4 cats and 1 dog to Critter care for the last 7 years and highly recommend their service. The staff are friendly and seem to care for all my animals; whenever I take my dog she gets so excited and happy to see that staff. I know that Dr. Portugal's approach is a bit unorthodox and that some people find it odd, but I think she is great with my animals. She is understanding with large vet bills and is willing to work with you. I think the world of her and wouldn't go to any other vet. more
