Riverwood Medical is by far the best Family Care Practice! Dr. Mitchell Costner is our primary physician. He is compassionate and extremely thorough each and everytime I or one of my family members go in for a visit. I have never felt as if he was rushing me out of the office as some other places I have been. It is easy to see that he is very concerned and will do everything in his power to solve any health issues my family and I may have. More than once he has saved my husband's life and I will forever be greatful to him and his staff. I have the utmost respect for him and his name is the first name I mention anytime anyone ask for my advice when searching for a physician. Riverwood Medical has wonderful, intelligent doctors and an amazing staff. I have had to call several times for different issues and my calls are returned lightening fast. I have had the opportunity to see Susan Capps PA, Dr. David Layne and Dr. Latham and they are all wonderful. So if you are searching for great physicians with a great staff then Riverwood Medical is the place to go. more

I have been seeing Dr"".Do not Care ""James Mitchel Costner for over 20 years. He has always seemed a little cold and distant to me and my wife. His advice has usually been text book correct, however I always leave thinking he did not hear anything I said. These Last few days have left me really frustrated and in severe pain. I was in a a car accident 6-15-2012. .I was taken to Gaston Memorial and transferred to CMC. The first 4 weeks I do not remember.I was diagnosed with a spinal cord injury at the c-2 vertebrae. To those that do not know that means I am now a quadriplegic. I have been in rehab hospitals until November the 5th. I was written prescriptions to last until I get new ones written by my primary doctor Dr. Do Not care. I had notified JMC after I was cognitive of all test, procedures and results at every facility I had been admitted. I was taking several medications to control my pain and spasms. I was told not to try to go off these medications at every rehab hospital because they were still needed for my therapy to continue at home. I was given only a 10 day supply of some of these meds. I contacted my primary physcian JMC, to have him refill these. I also told him that I was now in a power wheel chair. The only way I can be transported is in a handicapped van. After I called Access and my home social worker called them and other transporters, we have been told it would be impossible to transport me until December. The first request to Dr. Costner resulted in him saying to go to the Pain Center. The earliest appointment I can get is mid December. My homecare nurse and my Social worker called Dr. Costner yesterday and explained everything including all information on my prescription to Riverwood's personnel. I received no response until today. He nor staff even called me. They called the Nurse and Dr. Costners response to her was ""That under no circumstances would he write me a prescription for any narcotic and this was his final word on the subject."". I am 65 years old and in so much pain it has taken me hours to type this document. I have lived in Gastonia my whole life, and I have never abused drugs. more

WOW! I cannot express what a HORRIBLE experience it has been dealing with this practice. Like the reviewer ""saffronica"" we have the EXACT same issue with the same doctor...this BARRY SCANLAN is horrendous!! My husband injured his leg quite badly on June 9th, was seen by this doctor 4x now for this issue and has actually seen the doctor a total of FIVE MINUTES as well and of course his leg is still not well. It is August 2nd now and they are JUST getting around to FINALLY referring my husband to a surgeon....well DUH, ya think?! We're going on 2 months now with no results and noooo compasion or care from this ""doctor"" BARRY SCANLAN. BEWARE PEOPLE, this doctor does NOT care about you, he just wants your co-pay and insurance money....that my friends is completely clear by the time he spends with you in the exam room (less than two minutes!). This is sooo NOT ACCEPTABLE!! We will be looking for health care elsewhere for sure!!! more

Just waiting for September to roll around 7/25/2011

As soon as September rolls around (thanks to a deal with the insurance) I am LEAVING this crappy practice and finding a GOOD doctor! I have seen Doctor Barry Scanlan maybe a grand total of five minutes, even though I've been to his office five times and spent countless hours waiting to actually be graced by his presence! I've never been treated with such disrespect in all my life! I've been dealing with the same medical issue for a month now, and with appropriate antibiotics it would have cleared up within 14 days; but OHHH NOOO! Dr. Scanlan doesn't want to be bothered with my problems! This makes the fourth time I've called first thing in the morning just to get the standard ""I'll have the nurse call you"" just to NEVER get a call back. I have blood test results that have been sitting in their computer for a week now that they REFUSE to give me! THEY'RE MY FREAKIN' TEST RESULTS and they are important test results! When did getting a good doctor become so difficult? My old doctor was always right on top of the matter and saw me within 24 hours of my first problems! I'm so sorry she moved out of the area because this guy can't even TOUCH her outstanding level of care! more

Excellet Family Practive 1/23/2011

I have been a patient at this practice since it was first opened behind the Harris Teeter in Riverwood....the practice located to its curent location around 1993 - This is an excellent family practice - I have seen all of the Doctors through the years and would recommend any of them as well as the PA, Susan Capps. My Primary Care Physician is David Layne and I could never say enough nice things about this Doctor. HE is superb - very smart and explains things in layman terminology never talking over one's head! more

Wonderful Family Practice 1/28/2009

I've been going to this practice since the early to mid 1990s. My whole family goes here. My primary physician is Dr. Mitchell Costner. Over the years I have seen many of the doctors (in the early years it was only Dr. Layne and Dr. Costner) all of the doctors seem to be thorough, compassionate and caring. The staff are helpful and courteous. I have found this practice to always be most accommodating about getting you in to see a doctor when needed. I have recommended this practice to many of my colleagues and everyone is pleased with their doctor and the practice as a whole. My personal preference is Dr. Costner, he is so down-to-earth and he truly listens. I have no doubt that I am receiving the best medical care, he is so knowledgeable and conscientious. So if you are looking for a family practice, I would highly recommend Riverwood Family Medical. Pros: Comprehensive family practice. Excellent medical care. Thorough and knowledgeable doctors. Cons: Location is not the most convenient. more

Riverwood Medical Associates, Gastonia, NC 3/4/2008

I have been going to Riverwood almost since it opened. Have had the opportunity to see two of the Physicians there (Dr. Latham and Susan Capps PA) Dr Latham is great at listening and diagnosing, could be a tad more smiley :) though but very nice. Susan has a wonderful ""bedside"" manner, very compassionate. There are many other Dr's there but can't tell you about them. I bet there is a personally there for everyone! Girls at the front desk are over worked, so sometimes not very smiley but still nice. The lady that answers the phone, Alison, a sweetheart! That goes for everyone that I have had phone contact with over the years, form the lab results to the insurance gal. More practices could use ""people persons"" like these in their offices. Pros: Seperate waiting room for those that are not sick with anything catching. Onsite X-rays and MRI's. Cons: As usual, wait time but not to bad, they do strive to make it as short as posable. But then, if I didn't have to wait, I would wonder if I could get all the atention I needed with Dr..hmm.... more

Friendly doctors and staff 3/1/2008

The Dr's are very nice . They take time with you. You do not feel rushed. The staff is great! I would recommand these dr's to anyone! Pros: They take time with each patient. Cons: The wait time is sometimes to long more
