I had to go to CPAH on an emergency basis and everyone there including the front desk staff was wonderful. The technician staff came rushing out when they found out an emergency ...

I have a old diabetic cat that got treated here and my experience with most of the doctors were amazing. But front desk staffs sometimes don't know what their doing. I went to get...

Beware 8/8/2008

I took my dog there several times and was very satisfied with the treatment provided by Dr. Reed Hall. However, at one point my dog developed a tooth abscess and had to have several teeth removed while Dr. Hall was away. When we went to pick up my dog, he was in terrible shape, seemed like he was in a lot of pain and just miserable compared to when he had to have teeth removed before. Also, the vet who did the procedure had left before we were even called to pick him up. They called us right before closing and really rushed us out. When we got home and had a good look, we saw that my dog had a 4 inch BURN on his lower side. He was wimpering constantly from the awful pain. At this point, the office had already closed. We gave him the pain pills provided but they didn't seem to help much. We took him back first thing the next morning and demanded an explanation. They didn't have one. They claim that they don't use heating pads after surgery, which I think is a lie. Anyway, more

2 Facilities/Dr Davis Hall-owner+Dr Reed Hall-owner's son=$$MOST IMPORTANT 5/28/2008

I have been going to Dr Davis Hall for many many years. He had been treating my parents dogs and seemed to be a very genuine and caring man.Recently I needed to get my 2 dogs checked for an allergy and to get a rabies titre on an old dog.\r When I saw the bill I nearly fainted.Six hundred dollars for blood work/titres and nail clipping, anals and the exam. When I told the front counter that I would have to pay part of it for now. They acted as if they never heard of such a thing. Meanwhile I and my parents had been loyal clients for nearly 20 years.I am disabled-do not a steady income and explained that I was not prepared for the large cost-could I please talk to Dr Hall Sr and make payment arrangements?? They called him at home and then called me at home and told me that he said 'UNLESS I pay the total amount due' that they would 'THROW AWAY THE BLOOD THEY TOOK FROM MY DOGS' instead of sending it to ther lab for processing.\r I have an elderly dog and a very allergic young dog. I have more

I mean let's all tell the truth.. 5/10/2008

I've been going to Columbia Pike for about 3 years now and I decided to go there after doing some research; I learned it's one of the older more reputable vets in this area. Every place has it's good and bad and people need to be fairer and unbiased in their reviews. Yes, the building itself is a bit out-dated. The inside looks like the 70's threw up in there and the front desk staff is not the best either. Their tone of voice when they greet you over the phone and when checking in does seems like you're interrupting and annoying them, but in the end, you're going there for great vet care and that is what you'll get. I personally see Dr. Collada and Dr. Collada only. I'm sure the other vets are great too, but I have no experience with them. My dog was suffering from chronic diarrhea that my previous vet told me told me was a "permanent" side effect from her sensitive stomach issues and the fact that she had major sx in her intestines (she had to have a toy that she ate surgicall more

Never been disappointed. 1/29/2008

This isn?t anonymous. Been with Columbia Pike abt 25 yrs. Took 6 cats & 2 gerbils and some gerbil kits there over that time. Vets used mainly Dr. Jana Froehling (now on own), Dr. Candice Flynn (primary, now), Dr. Amy Poole (backup vet). Never been disappointed. I started out down the road from them. Now I live an 80-minute drive away and still go back to them for the two cats I have now. - - - The cats, collectively, have had: Cat 1: Diabetes (late diagnosis), vestibular syndrome, nerve damage in tail from severe constipation. -- Cat 2: Hyperthyroid, and totally crazy, but they dealt with him; died of massive lung infection, in 3 days flat. -- Cat 3: Have her now, she?s 16. Now has high blood pressure & a hyperactive thyroid, old lady diseases. She?s on meds and doing fairly well, the liver damage from a bad reaction to her hyperth-meds is still being beaten back, but she?s doing well for her age. -- Cat 4: Generally healthy, but got a massive case of cancer at about 7 year more

Pretty decent place 1/28/2008

My cat and dog have both had unfortunate issues over the past two years and I've taken both of them to numerous vets at Columbia Pike Animal Hospital. I was fairly happy with all of the services I recieved. I did not spend that much time dealing with the front desk staff, but I was checked in quickly and had no issues. Unlike the previous poster, I had seen Dr. Poole for one visit and she was very kind and I felt satisfied with my visit. Something to mention as well is that they are much more affordable then other hospitals, just call around. Anyway, all around, pretty good. No big complaints or congrats, just a nice place. more

Butchers with a license to practice 1/23/2008

Columbia Pike Animal Hospital came highly recommended to me by a fellow pet owner. I have taken my Boxer, Brutus, to this facility for 2 significant ailments. The first, demodectic mange, occurred during puppy stage and was treated with a highly toxic chemical. Brutus was stunned for days and I did not continue treatment. The second, mast cell tumor on right hind leg, was treated by Dr. Poole. When I picked Brutus up after surgery I noticed that the exposed 6-inch incision only had 4 sutures. The site opened 2 days following surgery and I was forced to return to Columbia Pike Animal Hospital for eval. 2 more sutures were necessary to close the open area but there was still significant space between other stitches. Several days later another area opened up where there were no previous sutures. I was forced to take Brutus to Hope Veterinary clinic at midnight for eval. Dr Rouse, at Hope Clinic, placed 4 additional sutures to close the wound and recommended follow-up with regular Vet to r more

I will still drive halfway around the beltway during rush hour to go here! 11/13/2007

I have been taking my pets to Columbia Pike since we adopted our cats 3+ years ago at the recommendation of the SPCA. My only complaint is the reception staff, which are usually pretty bad and seem to have a quick turnover rate. I can't speak for the boarding facilities as I've never seen or used them. But both times I've had pets spend the night for surgeries, they've come home clean.\r \r I rave about this office to everyone I know---the vets here are wonderful! We've seen Dr. Heather Kirchart for almost every appointment. Through routine exams, a bad upper respiratory infection, a broken foot (that required weekly visits), and now a dog with skin allergies, she has always been excellent...extremely compassionate and dedicated. AND she's not out to get your money. Literally, she's squeezed us in between appointments for follow-ups quite a few times "so you don't get charged for another office visit". I'm not sure if this is just her, or if it's office-wide, but overall I've found their more

Very disappointing!!!! 11/1/2007

I took my dogs and cats there for many years but in the last year or so the quality of service has become very poor. I would call to have a thyroid or food prescription filled in the afternoon, telling them that I would be in after six o"clock to pick it up and it was NEVER ready when I got there! My dogs were refused their diet dog food because they were due for their shots when I told the vet assistants repeatedly that I would bring them in before the end of the year. This immediate change in their food resulted them having diarhea for several days!!!! When I left a message for Dr. Hall asking for an explanation I never got a return call/message back. The only good thing that came out of this is that I found a less expensive, high quality dog food as opposed to theirs which went up in cost $8.00 with no notice!!!! more

Great Vet 9/6/2007

I moved to Northern Virginia 19 years ago with 2 cocker spaniels and one cat....since then we have acquired 4 more cats and 4 more dogs.\r \r The hospital staff has ALWAYS proved to be compassionate and practical. If you are having difficulties...maybe you don't spend the time to talk with them OR have other issues. No vet will ever be perfect. We have lost pets due to many illnesses, heart lining inflammation (age 8), kidney failure (age 15), stomach bloat (age 14), cancer (3) (ages 8, 8, and 13), and a natural death (age 8). I never lost one through a medical error or anything. Through all the trials and tribulations...the vet staff have supported and comforted our family of furry friends. \r \r I recommend this clinic to folks who ask me about vet services. Before Columbia Pike, my cockers were seen by at least 3 different vets in this area. They never liked going to the vet...but they received top notch care. Having pets can be expensive...one of the many considerations to thi more

Disappointed 9/2/2007

For many years a friend of mine had rave reviews for this animal hospital. Just recently this friend boarded her dog of 13 years who has Arthritis in her hind quarters. Upon my friend's return, the dog was not given her Arthritis medicine and was not walked (the request was made upon admission). A specific request was written on the chart not to give the dog a distemper shot because of her age and due to advice given by a vet at Columbia, because it could possible kill her. The shot was given anyway. Additionally, the dog's back end was covered with feces and when the owner picked the dog up (she couldn't walk due to not being walked and not receiving her medication), the feces got all over her clothing.\r \r I'm really concerned because I just recently brought my cat there and they left him sitting in his urine in the carrier and he was saturated with the urine. The techs never checked and in not checking, the cat was not cleaned up before my pickup. Needless to say, it appears more

Better Vet Than Most 7/25/2007

Columbia Pike Animal Hospital has always provided excellent care for my dogs. Davis Hall is a superb vet. Would I like to change a couple of things there - sure. I would love to see larger kennels for boarding, possibly even some dog runs - you bet. I would also like to see more seasoned help at the front desk. I found CPAH after a long search for quality pet care. I had been to several other vets in the area where I was advised to spend thousands of dollars on needless tests for my dog. CPAH came up with a much more common sense solution that cost very little and my dog lived several more years in relative comfort before dying at the age of 13. No business is perfect and mistakes do happen. On balance I think they have delivered quality service. more

Have improved 7/22/2007

My dog became very ill after the pet recall was first announced and i was scared that she might've had the contaminated Alpo. I called the front desk to see what could be done to see if my pet was indeed infected. They were very helpful and set an appointment up to see Dr. Collada. He did some bloodwork, and gave me new food to give to my baby. Thank god her test came back saying her kidneys were not failing. What was great was that Dr.Collada called weeks after the appointment just to make sure she was doing okay and back to normal. I owe them a lot. In a time of crisis they were quick to act. They also got a new computer system that makes it easier and quicker to get refills and review my pets history. I'll admit they were average in the beginning but with the new computer system and a fresh new start they are better than ever.In response to Marianne, you are mad because these people chose to remain unknown, but do you honestly have nothing better to do with your life than to keep ret more

Terrific doctors 7/18/2007

I have two VERY senior dogs. One in particular has had more serious issues. Although my dogs mainly see Dr. Davis Hall, we have seen Dr. Reed Hall. Both Dr. Halls have been caring, sensitive and available for questions during and following visits. Dr. Davis Hall is a gentle man who is extremely knowledgeable and patient with my dogs (and with me and my questions). He has always called me back the same day I have left a message. Dr. Reed Hall, whom we've only seen once, was caring, as well, and he called to check on our very sick dog's welfare (who recovered) following our visit to him. I would never hesitate to recommend either Dr. Hall to anyone. (By the way, the front office staff people have always been polite and accommodating in person and on the phone.) Also, I love that my dogs can be seen by either Dr. Hall at both Columbia Pike Animal Hospital as well as Town and Country Animal Hospital. It makes it much easier to get an appointment that is convenient. more

Lost tests and never called me back 7/16/2007

After a very negative experience at Columbia Pike Animal Hospital, I went on-line and saw this site. My cat stopped eating and drinking and was completely lethargic within less than 48 hours. I took him to Columbia Pike Animal Hospital where they ran blood work, did stomach x-rays and gave him some fluids. The vet told me that he was "slightly dehydrated." By the next morning he was worse. The vet had promised to expedite his blood work and to call me back the next day. By 7:30 p.m. the cat was in very bad shape and I hadn't heard from the doctor in spite of calling earlier in the day and asking her to call me back with the test results as soon as possible. I called again and had to argue with the front desk person in order to get the vet on the phone. I was put on hold for 15 minutes waiting for the vet. She told me she had been really busy all day and hadn't called anyone back. I asked her what the test results showed and she said she hadn't had a chance to check on them. more

Dr. Reed Hall--Best Vet 6/5/2007

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw such negative reviews. He has taken care of my very sick dog for over 11 years. He has given him a life he would have never had if he went somewhere else. We moved several times and tried numerous vets but they never helped us. We now live in Baltimore and drive 2 hours in rush hour traffic to see him because we know how bad some of the vets are out there are. He and his father are extremely knowledgeable about diseases and treatments. I have learned a HUGE lesson by going elsewhere and not returning back to Virginia to see him. We always get a personal call from him to check on his status within a couple of days. How many doctors due that?\r \r We now have 2 dogs and my mothers dog who lives 3 1/2 hours a way. If they ever have any illnesses, we take them to see Dr. Reed. He is always ready to see us on a moments notice. \r \r I recommend him to all my friends and to anyone who cares about their pet. I believe it is worth the money for the more

Great place 4/13/2007

I have taken my puppy there since she was 8 weeks old, and she is now 5 years. Although they can get quite busy, the vets are great and I find them easy to deal with. I had been to a few other places with my other pets, but because they were smaller practices, I dont feel as though they were able to use up-to-date equipment or consult with other doctors on my pet's condition. And as I said above, they can get quite busy so you must be patient with the front desk staff, but they are friendly and I always enjoy going there. more

Nightmare experience 4/3/2007

I made a reservation to board my dog at Columbia Pike Animal Hospital. In the meantime, my cat developed conjunctivitis, which she had before as a kitten when I first took her to Columbia Pike. The condition was easily cleared up with antibiotic eye drops. However, when I took her in this time, (a second occurence, which is common) the new vet (the other vet was not available - you can rarely get an appointment with the same vet at Columbia Pike and there is constant vet turnover) told me she had to do several tests, and then concluded that the cat had blocked tear ducts, which she would need to put her under to treat. I declined. I was charged $100 dollars (for no treatment). Before I left I asked to see the boarding facilities. The "facilities" looked like the prison cells I saw at the tour of Alcatraz prison I once took - peeling paint, concentration camp conditions. I don't even think that the place could be sanitary. The "runs" advertised were so small that my 25 pound do more

Some people don't know what they are talking about 2/11/2007

This place is one of the best places in Virginia. There staff is both friendly, polite and professional. The doctors are intelligent and make the most of our money. Yes, it is time for a construction make over on the building. Below someone wrote that Dr.Hall is never available for appointments and doesn't seem like he remembers her. Well as everyone knows he has two hospitals (Fairfax and in Annandale) where he shares his time. He is a popular doctor and is well respected. He will come to work even when he is not scheduled to do so and will squeeze people in even when his appts slots are all book or he isn't scheduled to see clients that day.. Another person also wrote that they were mad that they were charged so much for a spay, dental and biopsy. When you bring the animal in you are to sign and authorize treatment such as dental, extractions, pre op and post op meds as well as biopsy and tumor removals so you should be some what aware of the price, depending on how much you want them t more

Quality Has Declined, Price Has gone Up 2/8/2007

In the six years I have been going to Columbia Pike, their quality of care has very much decreased and their prices have gone up excessively. Although I bring 2 dogs and 4 cats to them, I don't get any sense that Dr. Hall ever remembers me, and he frequently is unavailable for appointments. I have not been impressed with some other vets I have seen. When stitches were removed on one of my cats after her spay surgery, the technician tore her skin. I purchased heartworm meds, which turned out to be completely empty from the manufacturer, and was told by the office staff that I would have to seek the return of my money from the manufacturer. Most recently, I took a cat in for runny eyes. I paid $50 for an exam, another $30 for a test to see if the animal had any scratches on the cornea (without being asked if I wanted this test) only to be told that the reason for this test was for a steroid medication which the vet then discouraged me from using because she said it was dangerous to more

Vets OK, Office Staff Not so Good.... 3/24/2006

Dr. Flynn is a very gentle, knowledgable, and helpful Vet, who does Exotics. The only problem is the office staff. they are unfriendly and unhelpful. they are young, and inexpereineced and that might be the problem. others I have talked to who take their cats and dogs to her said the same thing, that Dr. Flynn is wonderful, but receptionists arent nice! (EX: I called over the weekend after i found my sick ferret dead, and called to see if they could hold him in their freezer cos we wanted to bury him, they were TOTALLY unhelpfull and extremely RUDE, especially after i just found one of my babies cold on the floor)\r \r Price is just OK. Not as bad as some others. Our other vet, Siemering at Exotic Pet Clinic in Springfield charges for the visit, and then for the shots, comes to about $80, BUT Dr. Flynn doesnt charge for the visit, but the shots are a lot more, so it comes out to about the same $80. PROS: No charge for visit (if getting shots or something) CONS: Shots are k more
