Clove Lakes Health Care-Rehab

My mother recently spent a month at Clove Lakes after a brief hospital stay. Everyone in my large and often critical family had only good things to say about the care that she received while at Clove Lakes. She is home now, quite noticeably stronger than she's been in a long time. All of the staff with whom we came in contact always asked after her well being and ours. How is your mother they would ask... do you need anything? The doctor monitored her care and medications and adjusted some of them which we find was for the better. The nurses very competently watched for any changes in her condition. The certified nursing assistants were caring and gentle. The therapists patiently worked to increase her endurance towards the goal of returning home. Social Service was always available to answer questions and prepare us for the transition home setting up home care services and equipment. Dietary was always aware of food likes and dislikes and ensuring that she was eating enough. We brought her personal wheelchair because she's comfortable with it and while I hadn't noticed that a hand brake wasn't working, the nurse did and immediately, Plant Operations was there to repair it. Pastoral Care made sure she got to Mass, Recreation worked on including her in activities, she had weekly beauty parlor appointments and the Environmental services staff works hard to keep everything so clean. We're very thankful for the excellent care. more

As my mother's dementia condtiion became more than my family and I could comfortably handle at home, we once again turned to Clove Lakes Health Care Facility. My mother was previously a resident after a brief hospital stay and made a remarkable recovery. However, several weeks later her dementia condition became acute, we again returned to Clove Lakes and have not once regreted our decision. My mother has been a resident of the dementia unit for almost one year. During this time we have been fortunate to become one of the Clove Lakes ""family"". The excellent care my mother receives is due in part to the team of professionals responsible for her care. The dementia unit is truly a special place. The nursing staff is a group of seasoned, caring individuals that know their residents and makes each one feel special while providing excellent medical care. The social workers are there to answer any question or address any concern.The recreation department organizes activities on and off the unit to keep residents engaged. My family and I are indeed fortunate to have become one of the many families that call Clove Lakes our home away from home. more

Luckily we don't need to put anyone in a nursing home just yet, but from my experience this is where we'd go. more

My 67 yr old mom got really sick at the beginning of 2010, with early onset dementia and renal failure, possibly as a result of adult onset diabetes. We tried a number of therapeutic environments before settling in on Clove Lakes last October, on the advice of several friends. Their dialysis program is top notch, and my mom stopped having problems with fluid overload and hyperkalemia under their expert care. Her mood has improved as well which we attribute to a caring nursing staff and engaging recreation programs, and trips to their onsite greenhouse/aviary. While their food isn't the fine dining my mom once enjoyed, it is above average. I've eaten it and it really isn't typical institutionalized fare. She still has her fair share of rough bad days, but I am confident that the well trained staff will do right by her. Nobody wants to have to put their loved ones into any nursing facility, but I am happy that she is in great hands. more

As hard as it was I needed to realize my grandmother just was not able to live in the community any more. Although she resided with a family member and home care was available it just was not working out. She was admitted to Clove Lakes for rehab and when she tried to return home I realized she was safer and received better care while at Clove Lakes. I never imagined my grandmother who was a strong independent women in a nursing home, but it was the only option. Clove Lakes staff made her transition easy, the nurses and support staff are caring and respectful to her and the family. My grandmother and the family are thrilled with her care. more

My dad was admitted to the Clove Lake health care facility in Staten Island, N.Y. He was a dialysis patient. His diaper was never changed and mouth care was horrible. Every time visiting him the room smelled and I had to get an aide to change him. There were a few who cared and was kind to my dad, but the majority did not. On March 1st my dad went down for his dialysis, our family was there when they took him down. To our knowledge he was on dialysis and would return at 7:00 PM. After dialysis he was exhausted so we decided not to visit that evening, what a mistake that was! The next day he looked terrible, I spoke to the nurse on his floor and was told he went on dialysis for a short time, bp was 80/50 and oxygen level was very low so they took him off. I then asked why we were not contacted and she responded dialysis did not call? I responded no. She said they should've because it's their responsibilty to call. I told the nurse to call and ambulance I wanted my dad out of there she said we need to speak to the supervisor and I said ok, then speak to her and call. When I spoke to the supervisor she stated your dad is failing, I said that's more of a reason you should've called a member of our family and let us know what was going on. My dad was transferred to the hospital and passed away 3 days later. They inform us of everything. On March 8th I called the dialysis room and spoke to the case mgr. she told me my dad was never put on the machine due to low BP and oxygen level and was sent back to his room, it's the nurses on his floor to contact the family members. I do believe her cause they did call several times when there was a problem before. When he was transferred from his wheel chair to the bed the aide turned around and my dad fell, bruised his arm. I feel that if people can't do a job in a caring way they need to look for another occupation. This is no way to treat human beings. R.I.P Daddy WE LOVE & MISS YOU! Cons: everything was terrible! more
