There is nothing negative I could possibly say about City Fitness, Spring Garden St, Philadelphia. I have been to numerous gyms in the last fifteen years, and this one is by far ...

Great gym! Not to pricey and tons of great equipment. more

iThrive is awesome! I pay about $200/month for it, which is about $25 per hour twice a week. Which is pretty good as far as personal training goes. Was can't-go-up-stairs kinda sore for three days after my first session. \r \r The yoga room is pretty and I heard it's been soundproofed? I'll come to the weekend classes and then treat myself to a chocolatey smoothie. more

City Fitness has been making changes for the better in the past year or so. A brand new turf area now takes over part of the floor where they have group training, WeFit classes, TRX and other equipment. Even when I'm not with the trainers, I sometimes use this area to do boxjumps, wall balls and suspension training work (based on things I learn in classes). They've recently brought in Mike Boyle's THRIVE as a personal training program, which is sort of like Crossfit but in small groups. Personally, I'm saving for a wedding and can't afford training right now but I've loved the few sessions that I tried anyway. \r \r Rates are still pretty reasonable (only two membership packages, unless you get WeFit or training) and there are sometimes discounts or deals. The only thing that people find confusing all the time is the rate lock fee. It's $39, once a year on the same day, to avoid your rate from going up. That's why there are members from like 5 years ago paying just a few bucks, even though the fees are different now. It's described right there on the contract, including the date it's going to be charged every year. Maybe people don't pay attention or just forget? Either way, I just make a point to get a copy and then make note on my iPhone calendar so I don't get surprised.\r \r My favorite classes are yoga on Monday and BodyPump on Wednesday. I've also done yoga at the other location with Carmancita which was fun, and Armed & Dangerous which wasn't my favorite (and sometimes gets cut short for some reason). I appreciate the addition of new classes, though a wish there were a few more that started later in the evening for night owls like me.\r \r Full disclosure, this review is based on my experience as a MEMBER but I have also worked on the website for this gym (as I have with many other fitness biz in the city). But this is based on my own personal opinions only! more

I absolutely do not recommend this gym to anyone. They nickel and dime anyone they can. In the past 6 weeks I have officially downgraded my membership from the top level to the bottom level on 3 separate occasions with 3 different employees (!!) because I work full time and am a part time student (something I was told was very easy to switch when I signed up). Of course, each time I inquired as to why I was still being billed the old rate I was assured ""oh, so sorry, our mistake, will be fixed and you will be reimbursed."" Nope, didn't happen. The explanation I got from employee #2 and employee #3 was ""Oh yeah, the last guy you spoke with is an idiot, but there's nothing I can do. I can't undo a charge (even if it's our fault)."" Then employee #3 said ""I doubt the woman in billing will refund your money. Sorry, that's just the way it is here."" The gym is not nearly nice enough to allow for this horrible customer service. more

Need More Clarity About The Membership Price 1/16/2012

My wife and I went looking for a new gym to get fit in 2012. While City Fitness does seem to have some clear plusses: lots of free weights, spacious, a free parking lot, and great hours, we were feeling pretty disappointed about the sign-up process. On our first visit, we were quoted $50/month combined for both my wife and I with no enrollment fee. It sounded like a great deal, but we wanted to think it over for a bit and also check out other gyms like 12th street and PSC. When we returned to City Fitness today, another gentleman greeted us and said it would be $60 a month for the both of us. When I mentioned that we had been quoted $50/month, he began to explain in a very confusing way about all these different extra add-on fees. He then said he was the manager and was surprised that we had been quoted anything but the $60 fee. The manager then summoned the original woman who gave us the $50/month offer and she didn?t remember giving us that quote. I felt like it was more of a ca more

I felt like it was more of a car dealership experience which was troubling to me because maybe a future billing problem would arise and it would an equally difficult and confusing experience. more

Missing the basics 1/14/2012

Its a clean gym and well priced. But the management has received numerous requests for the most basic equipment -and they've ignored them all. The gym does not have what is called a slant board -- its an inexpensive inverted sit up board and its standard issue for gyms. So if you are expecting this basic workout item, don't join this gym. more

Terrible Experience 8/10/2011

Terrible customer service. \r \r Deployed 2x to Afghanistan (back to back) so I went in to cancel membership before deploying. They offered to freeze membership, and did NOT tell me that a freeze would cost me any money. 1.5 years later I get back and start to go through my financial history only to find out they've been charging me all along. Politely asked for a refund, and was told that "I should have checked my account regularly." Oh, I'm sorry, with my VERY limited amount of computer time I was working on my degree and talking to my family, not scouring my finances for a seemingly obscure $15/mo charge. Finally, after over week of calling and asking for a status of their decision on my account, they offered no refund, but did offer a 1 yr free membership--I explained I would prefer the refund, since the military is moving me. They didn't seem to care, and so now I've got nothing back. This month (as if to add insult to injury) they charged me AGAIN. \r \r City Fitness is NOT more

Join ANY gym but this one... 8/10/2011

City Fitness is NOT military friendly, and I'd imagine they would treat others in uniform just as poorly. Join ANY gym except for this one. Seriously. If they treated me this way imagine how they will treat you. more

Get me in here!!! 3/2/2011

There is nothing negative I could possibly say about City Fitness, Spring Garden St, Philadelphia. I have been to numerous gyms in the last fifteen years, and this one is by far the best gym ever!! I have been a member for the last three years, and despite having moved, and having to drive a ways to get there, I will never change gyms. It is one of the cleanest gyms I have seen, has every piece of equipment I could hope for, has a variety of classes, and AWESOME trainers! The entire staff is super friendly and helpful. There are constantly improvements being made, new classes being added, and new and interesting equipment being introduced. Membership is also very affordable. Another great perk is the smoothie bar whose shakes are delicious and put my home made concoctions to shame. The best part of this gym though is the atmosphere! Come check it out for yourself. more

Get me outta here! 2/27/2011

This review would have probably gotten a 3 star review from me because three stars is average-ish and that's what this place is, average-ish. I dropped it to two stars because of two separate incidents that occurred with front desk personnel that significantly lowered my opinion. The gym in itself is just as stated above, average. The cost is tolerable, the hours are nice, but the gym doesn't offer many classes, and has few amenities. ANYWAY, that being said, two incidents have changed my opinion of this place, and forced me to search for another place to tone my fantastic ass. When I initially signed up, the sales guy (Quinn) told me that my monthly rates would be $25 due to my student status and that there were no other fees besides the monthly rate. Low and behold the very first month I had a 39.99 charge on my credit card ( the difference of which took 16 days to get placed back into my account). The monthly rate was fixed, however 2 months later I was hit with another 25 dollar charge which was never mentioned to me initially, but later explained to me as a fee that locks in my rate....right. Besides the rough billing start, and limited options, things were fine and the I always thought the staff was quite pleasant. Of course that changed with one fell swoop. On my way out one night, I had to tell the girl behind the front desk (Heather) my key number 3 times because she seemingly ignored me or didn't hear me because she was talking on her cell phone. I understand the necessity of the phone, Im a woman, I get it. But the whole matter seemed unprofessional and to top it off as I said good night, I got no farewell in return. Impolite if you ask me, but maybe I was just raised differently. So I said seeya City Fitness, and am currently quite happy at Sweat.....(hint. hint. review coming?) more

I'M BAAACCCCK! 11/8/2009

OK...I was a former member who left the gym when my trainer departed...I'm the type of fitness client that needs someone to hold me accountable and focused for my time in the gym. I'm easily distracted.\r \r I rejoined about 2 months ago (September '09) when I learned of the $19.99 promotion (which allows access to the gym and it's machines. Classes, tanning, training are all add-ons. I believe yoga is also an additinal cost) that was being offered and thought I'd minimally use the gym for cardio since I already had a gym membership in CC...but then took a class instructed by Dwayne T. and haven't looked back!! Have only taken the boot camp classes taught by Dwayne and it's a serious, no-nonsense workout. I leave in a pool of sweat, exhusted, but feeling AMAZING. SInce then, I cancelled my other gym membership and am solely working out here. \r \r The gym has changed alot since I first worked out here 18 months ago. The ""contract"" others complain about has been altered since I am significantly paying less than I did previously. The juice bar is now operating-although I have not used it. \r \r I agree with others, the gym is huge, lots of space to work out and I've never had to wait for a machine or piece of cardio equipment ever. Flat screens on the cardio equipment are also a plus. Front desk staff are friendly. Locker room is clean. \r \r I've also begun working out one-on-one with Dwayne and after working out with three others trainers in the city, Dwayne is what I've been looking for: a true professional, on-time, educated, dedicated and focused on YOU and YOUR fitness goals. His workouts are INTENSE, pushing you to your limit, changing each session to prevent repetition and keeping you thinking as to what will come next. Just like his classes, it's a no-nonsense workout. As long as Dwayne is there, I am there.\r \r My only con is that free parking in their lot is limited during peak times-meter parking is always available (when I've been there) on the street.\r \r I say give it a try... Pros: Fanastic Trainer, Good Classes, Machine Availability Cons: Limited Free Parking During Peak Periods more

Awesome local gym 11/3/2009

City Fitness is an awesome gym. The staff is very friendly and it is definitely a family oriented gym. All of the equipment is new, each peice of cardio equipment has a personal flat screen tv and they have great classes. The juice/protein bar is a great plus too. The prices are cheap! Also, tanning (which is a big plus for me) is only 10.00 a month. They open at 5am and close at 11pm so there are no constraints on when I can go. It's overall a great enviornment. The classes are fabulous and I have never waited in line for equipment. Great place! Pros: juice bar, experienced trainers, classes, hours, low prices more

Great, inexpensive gym 10/27/2009

Clean gym with a nice staff and the prices are stupid-low! I wish they offered more class times but are building two new rooms so hopefully that's coming soon...All-in-all, nothing really to complain about. more

City Fitness is awewsome! 7/14/2009

Awesome! Very clean. Staff is so friendly and the trainers rock! Also a new and delicious juice bar. Big Plus.. Lower rate than before! Love this place! more

Terrible and dishonest - avoid! 3/30/2009

They are completely dishonest and tried to double charge me for my membership. I had to call with old credit card receipts to prove I'd paid and even then they didn't believe me! Avoid at all costs! more

UNFIT GYM 3/25/2009

GYM SEEKERS BEWARE! I've belonged to 8 gyms in my life and this one has the most atrocious business practices of any! They will hit your credit card with random charges and the only way to get your money back is to dispute the charges with your credit card company and change your account number. My identity was stolen from this gym too, since the records with every member?s social security and credit card number is available to the entire, constantly-rotating staff. They will tell you the papers are kept in a locking filing cabinet. NOT TRUE according to fired staff!! They fired their best trainers, likely because they can't even afford to pay their heating bill. The heat hasn't worked for over 4 months. When you ask why, you are told by Carl, (a new manager that has single-handedly wrecked this gym) that they have people working on it. LIES. LIES. LIES. I quit this gym because I moved and they hit my card with over a $100 charge. You won?t find this fee in the fine print of your c more

it started out as a great gym 3/21/2009

I loved city fitness when it first opened. They had great classes, everyone who worked there was really nice and friendly. They had fun fitness contests all the time. But in the last six months it has really gone downhill. Management and staff changed, there are still a few good people there, like JP, Jen (hoop-dance instructor) and Chaka. But for the most part the attitude is disappointing. They used to have some really great bikes with a virtual reality ride on them, they mysteriously disappeared. The prices keep changing, going up etc etc. Classes get canceled constantly. I'm sure they've burned just about every good instructor/trainer in town, by letting them go.The instructors are inconsistent. They now have some kind of martial arts school that's slowly taking over the entire gym. I only go there because of the convenient location. I wish they could make it like it used to be. more

Great independent gym 2/16/2009

I was surprised and saddened by the 2 reviews I just read on here. I find it humorous that these 2 reviewers want to bash the gym just because they are intimidated and don't have the know-how to negotiate a decent gym membership deal. City Fitness is a great independent gym, that opened during the start of this economic recession and has still found a way to slowly build business because the staff is friendly and the space is comfortable. I'm not sure which members of the staff the 2 reviewers on here were speaking with, but the owner, head desk manager and personal trainers are awesome and go out of their way to be available. The other members of the gym are not pretentious and are friendly, the vibe is great and I love this gym. more
