Best

Awesome burgers. Fun casual atmosphere. Eclectic place. A definite ""must eat at"" when in San Antonio.

Worst

very expenisive, too hard to find and too long of a wait for lunch

Pretty Good Burgers 8/10/2009

After seeing some of the reviews on this place I figured I had to try it, but when I got there I was hesitant to go in because the building looked like it might fall in on itself and I was a bit concerned for my safety. \r \r I'm glad I got over those things, because inside it is much nicer, and the food was worth the travel. Good burgers and fries. Pros: Atmosphere (inside) more

Best burger place in san antonio 8/4/2009

The burgers are great, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is kickin. Hands down, best place in san anto more

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this place 3/9/2009

Very Great tasting burger! I LOVE the Cheddar Cheesy Burger! 12/15/2008

This place is absolutely amazing. They have awesome tasting burgers and fries. I personally prefer the Cheddar Cheesy Burger. Yes, the burger is a bit greasy but it is delicious! Pros: Great tasting food! Cons: Hard to find parking during busy hours more

boo to chris madrid's 9/16/2008

5 star ratings? Really?\r \r I guess this place revolves around recreating a Whataburger, and makes no effort at anything else on the menu. While my other half tried a burger, which arrived dripping in grease, I ordered the chalupas, which turned out to be nothing more than a public school cafeteria effort. But the fries were what disappointed me the most.... I mean, if you're going to tout yourself as a burger joint, then I say your de rigeur side item must be top notch, or at least cooked. Our ""fresh cut fries"" arrived not fully cooked, greasy and unsalted. \r \r Boo. Pros: um.....central location? Cons: food more

Don't understand the popularity and appeal. 9/9/2008

I really don't understand the popularity and appeal of this place. It is always crowded and busy - the parking is terrible. But mainly, their burgers are grotesquely huge, disgusting, greasy and the fries aren't allthat great either. Maybe it's because they are considered on the cheaper side, but seriously - why does anyone eat here?! I much prefer Bigz Burgers Joint on Loop 1604 and Bitters. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

The Hamburger is very good all 5/26/2008

The hamburger is not very good. The bread falls apart when you pick it up. The meat is bigger than the bun. Pros: Frys Cons: Hamburgers more

Good burgers, friendly staff, need to visit at least once 4/23/2008

I decided to go here finally after reading so much about it. We went on a Tuesday afternoon before a Spurs game, so the place was pretty much empty. The staff was extremely friendly, even the busboys and the cleaning lady. They were all willing to help me figure out where I needed to go to order, where to pick up my food, where the restrooms were. I ordered a tostada burger, my wife ordered the Jalape?o burger; and we both ordered some regular fries (which was quite a large portion, big enough for the two of us and our young daughter). I admit I was skeptical of eating a tostada burger, but it was actually really good. I tried putting some ketchup on it, and then some of the fresh salsa. I recommend using the fresh salsa. It sounds odd, but trust me, it?s better than ketchup (think about eating ketchup with beans, blah). The burger was bigger than the bun, it was drenched in cheese. I?m a healthy eater, but it was my monthly date to splurge. They toasted the buns quite nicely, which prevents them from getting soggy. The fries were so-so, not to die for. The taste of the meat was good, but yes quite greasy. I did leave full, definitely. I believe that Burger Tex in Austin (off of Airport Blvd) has the absolute best hamburger in all of TEXAS, and I was hoping for something similar here at Chris Madrid?s (since I now live in San Antonio). Burger Tex is still better by far, but Chris Madrid?s will hold me over until then. I liked how totally unassuming the exterior of this restaurant is. It looks like some run-down old business with an over-sized parking lot. But once you walk through the doors, you?re surprised by how large it is, and the atmosphere is very welcoming and just flat out Texan. You need to drop by here at least once, maybe after spending a day at the Zoo, and walking around Brackenridge Park (just a few miles east). I?ve heard it?s busy, so maybe try to go when I did (during the week, after lunch rush, before dinner rush). Pros: Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, toasted buns, fills you up Cons: Not good for your heart! Hamburgers are basically the only menu item more

OVERRATED HAMBURGERS 3/19/2008

They have great customer service, but the hamburgers are overrated. The hamburgers are too greasy and so are the fries. The burgers have a good taste, but its not worth the wait or drive. Whataburger or Burger King taste better and are way less greasy. more

YUM YUM 2/25/2008

BEST BURGER, I got the toastada burger, It had a moat of gooey cheese surrounding the burger. You've seen the TACO BELL commercial where tha girl bites the taco and she has a trail of cheese leading from the taco to her mouth, It really is like that. One recommendation get your fries extra crisp otherwise they do tend to be kinda greasy. Pros: Out of this world burger, The owner Chris is always around and sooo friendly Cons: drinks are srved in small cup, and who wants to leave your yummy burger for a refill more

Mass-produced atmosphere 12/22/2007

Parents came to SA to visit (recent transplant) and at the suggestion of locals, friends and co-workers I took tehm there; HUGE mistake. The burgers were slopped on the bun, hanging halfway off, the cheese was half off the burger and the fries were complete grease sticks. I like greasy fries but these were disgusting. The burger was not bad; they (my parents were less impressed than me) were all below average. I've had the pleasure of very good burgers in Dallas, San Diego, and even L.A. I theorize that Madrids was at one time the best burger and exploded in popularity. At that point I believe the quality control disappreared. When I voiced my review to those that recommended Madrids, I also asked when the last time they had a burget there; all of them admitted it had been years since they ate a Madrid burger. Maybe I (3 including parents) had a bad lot or new cook/preparer but I don't recommend. Chester's is the best I've had thus far in S.A. Hope this helps! more

2nd or 3rd Best Place for a Burger 5/15/2007

This place has well seasoned hamburger patties and the fries are pretty good too. You can get your choice of a regular size burger or a ""macho"" size burger. In the past I've found the ""macho"" size to be hard to handle with your hands (it's sort of sloppy) so I always order the regular size. \r \r The one down side to this place is that it's, more often than not, very busy and if you're in a hurry this is not the place to go. Other than that if you get there at 11am you will not be disappointed. Pros: Great Burgers Cons: Wait time more

The definition of a dive 3/28/2007

Chris Madrid's is a novelty. It's a grungy looking, old, run-down dive located on one of the oldest streets in San Antonio (Blanco St.). When we first heard that we HAD to go and try Chris Madrid's tostada burger, we were excited at the thought of trying something new and unique. When I first turned onto Blanco St., we were almost certain that we were lost. Could this really be where the famous restaurant was located? Half of the road was torn up and I thought twice about parking my car because I was afraid I was going to get it stolen. Once inside though, it's pleasantly warm and it was filled with people even at 1:30pm. We had to stand in line for 15 minutes just to order and once we did, had to wait for another 15 minutes to get our order. We ordered a macho tostada burger to share between the two of us. We also got a large order of fries. People have raved about their seasoned french fries, but if anyone has ever had WingStop's fries, these are almost identical in size, shape, and taste. The burger was super greasy but super good. A tostada burger is almost exactly as it sounds. Buns, a tostada shell, refried beans, a huge patty of beef, cheese, and onions. Simple, but pretty darn delicious. It's definitely worth trying at least once, but we got home and decided ""Why can't we make our own healthy alternative?"" So we did with turkey. Just as delicious. Tune in next time for Preston and Wendy's Healthy Burger Alternatives. To recap, Chris Madrid's is just a novelty... but it's a delicious novelty. Too bad it's so grungy and located on Blanco St. Pros: Big burgers, hot lunch spot Cons: old and run-down, grungy location, a lot of people - no seats and long lines more

Just Awesome 10/25/2006

The best place to get a burger in San Antonio by far. The Macho jalapeño burger is terrific. The tostada burger is always a good choice too. Pros: Excellent food. Hot and Fresh Cons: Sometime hard to find a seat more

Needs better managment 10/21/2006

I've been going to chrismadrids for a while and every time i go it seems that they forget something. Lately it seems that the food is loosing its taste and the cooks are not being careful cooking. Last week when I went my food did not taste like it normaly tasted and the person that sat next to me had a gum in her hamburger. Yeah this was very discusting and I don't think they should place it to be number 1 buggers in SA. Pros: big burgers Cons: taste is not the same through out the burger more

Only average 9/9/2006

What's all the fuss about? I'd heard Chris Madrid's makes the best burgers in town so I was excited to try one. Sadly, it tasted just like a Whopper. Don't get me wrong - Whoppers are pretty good, but nothing to rave about and definitely not worth a 30 minute wait (20 minutes standing in line, 10 minutes to cook). Next time I want a burger, I'd sooner drive-thru a fast-food joint. Pros: French-fries Cons: Long lines, crowded seating area, mediocre burgers more

Best Burgers, bar none, in San Antonio and have been for over 25 years 8/19/2006

This is a don't miss place. Get the Cheddar Cheesy and fries. Yes, it is a place to drink some beer or have some Margaritas at. The Bar at this place came from the long lost and infamous Crystal Pistol bar and was given to Chris Madrid's because they were the one place worthy of carrying on the tradition. You won't find stuff like that at Red Robin!!!!\r \r The Crystal Pistol was, as a point of San Antonio History, a great bar on San Perdo that closed in the early eighties. The place was off limits to all Military Personnel in San Antonio. The legend evolved around there and $1.00 drinks on Thursday nights! Tonto looked over the bar in those days. True to the 8-Track Tape character of the place, it was closed before shaming itself with the lousy void of 80's music. The Pistol may seem to be gone, but it's spirit is alive, well and cared for at Chris Madrid's!!!! Pros: Best Burgers Anywhere Cons: Crowds, but how are you going to argue with a place crowded becuase it's good? more

A treat for your tastebuds 7/11/2006

My family who live across Chris Madrids recommended I try the burgers over there. i was amazed ! The first place in the States that doesn't use that untasty cheese like McD. friendly people, great service, great burgers. We need a Chris Madrid's over in Holland. Europe needs a lot of these places !!!!!!!!!! Pros: best burgers in town ! Thumbs up !!!!! Great service Cons: Sometimes way too busy......... more

""GREAT"" BIG BURGERS!!!!!!!!! 6/11/2006

WOW!! CHRIS MADRIDS WAS RECOMMENDED TO US, NOT A PLACE YOU WOULD JUST HAPPEN ON TO WHILE VACATIONING IN SAN ANTONIO. THE BURGERS ARE GREAT! THE FRIES WERE FRESH CUT AND NOT GREASY. TONS OF KIDDOS THERE SO A GREAT FAMILY PLACE, OUTSIDE EATING AREA AS WELL AS INSIDE. THE ICED TEA IS REALLY GOOD TOO. WE WOULD DEFINIATELY GO BACK!! IF THE OWNERS OF CM'S READ THE REVIEWS, OKLAHOMA NEEDS A BURGER PLACE LIKE THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\r VERY PLEASED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\r GO HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\r YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: LAID BACK Cons: A BIT OF A WAIT, BUT NOT BAD AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

What a great experience! 4/10/2006

This is truly the best burger joint I've ever been to. My boyfriend got the tostada burger and I got the cheeseburger. First of all...a burger that doesn't use American cheese? I'm already impressed! The servings were huge!!! But so darn good that we both finished it all! We shared an order of fries, but I probably could have eaten an order all by myself! The were nice and freshly cut and actually had a very unique flavor. The fresh salsa is also outstanding. Some of the reviews made me nervous about the location, but come on...it's just a different part of town. It's really a very relaxed and casual restaurant and though I'm not a local I felt very comfortable there. I can't wait to go back and try some other things on the menu! more
