Best

I just moved to Decatur, and this is the perfect spot to go after dinner for dessert/wine/cocktails.....We got a couple glasses of great cab, a chocolate martini- yum! and truffle...

Worst

I visited Chocolate Bar for the first time on Friday. It was freezing outside and I really wanted a hot dessert after dinner. So, we left our dinner restaurant and headed to Choco...

Their wine storage is terrible... all the wines I got there was cooked.. eek more

Went despite bad reviews, had a great time 3/6/2011

We wanted something different to do for our anniversary. We read a lot of poor reviews but decided to go anyway. We're glad we did. The drinks were great. Had the passion fruit mojito and a Merlot. I generally don't drink wine, or merlot, but it was good. Tried the drunken fruit and the assorted bon-bons. The wait staff was very friendly, the bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. It was a Saturday night and we had no wait. Sat at the bar. Got drinks within minutes and the food followed shortly thereafter. Maybe the rain scared the crowds away. Most seats were taken, and everyone was getting served. We're glad we went despite the haters. :) more

I when to the Chocolate Bar on the night of 02/04/11 to see what it was about. I enter got no greeting so I sat at a table. waiter and hostess pass me by with out even a hello or how are this everning Sir or any atknowagement at all. When the hostess finaly came to my table and ask If I like some water with her breast about to POP out. These two Jersey Shore looking underage Hookers got better sevice then I did. more

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE! 1/19/2011

This place has gone waaay down!! They shouldn't even call themselves the chocolate bar anymore since there are more flatbreads and panini's on the menu than chocolate desserts! I came to thiss place to get a chocolate fix but to no avail. because there barely ANY chocolates in the display case. The waitress convinced me to try a BBQ chicken flatbread and a little dessert called ""a pot de creme"". Lets just say, my waitress was the only good thing in front of me! The flatbread was hard with overcooked chicken and HUGE slices of onions ontop of a not so fresh flatbread! Then the disgrace of a chocolate dessert felt like I was chewing grains of salt because of its gritty texture. She said it was a custard but I've never had custard that was gritty.....I really did like this place for its great truffles but now it's just a waste of space. I wonder what happened to Chef Aaron and the previous owner. Maybe they can teach them a thing or two! more

Really Bad Service 1/5/2011

Im so embarrased that I planned an informal gathering here. My friends and I were the only people in the establishment on a Tuesday night, yet the waitress sat at the bar and watched TV rather than taking our order. It took more than 30 minutes for our orders to arrive, and some of us had to get up and go to the bar in order to place an order. MANAGEMENT: IS THIS HOW YOU TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS?? more

Wasted my money, don't waste yours. HORRIBLE!!!!!!! 12/31/2010

I purchased several groupons for chocolate lover family members. Went several times and it was closed even though according to the hours posted online and on the door they were suppossed to be open. Today I got there around 3:00 pm and found out that they open at 4:00 pm. I waited until 4:00 just to find out that they only wanted to serve dine inn only. The lady was very rude and told me to come back at 5:30 and I told her that the sign on the door only said that they open at 4:00 and I just wanted to get some desserts for my New Years party. She said that they had no boxes or containers and wanted everybody with groupons to leave. I was not the only one there waiting and when we got mad they said they could only get a few pieces in a paper bag for our $25.00 groupon. I counted 11 people in line and we were not happy. I spent $40.00 and was supposed to get $100.00 worth. The desserts were smashed in the bags and as far as I am concern I didn't even get $10.00 worth. When I checked the price on line they overcharged me. She gave 4 pieces of cake for a $25.00 certificate. I am calling American Express since I used them for payment. more

Don't go! 12/18/2010

Don't buy a Groupon for this place! Terrible service! Music was so loud that they couldn't even hear you to take your order! I had $25 to spend and asked for 12 Truffles to go and when I got home they didn't even give me all Truffles! There were other kinds of chocolates in the box.....I should have checked but wanted out of there so bad. They also state on their website that they open at 3pm on Sat. but never opened until 4:15pm knowing people were waiting outside. Waste of time and Groupon money! more

Way downhill 11/5/2010

Two years ago, the Chocolate Bar was superb, the flavors sublime, the attention to detail remarkable. Today, not so much. The evening started on an off note, and then got worse. First, noticed that the rose on the table was sitting in cloudy, obviously old water. We were finally given two different menus with different prices for some of the same things. Initially ordered the pot de creme. The wafer on top tasted like bug spray ? a very chemical flavor that kept on coming in waves and which made my tongue numb. The chocolate beneath had taken on some of that flavor and lacked the silky-smooth, luscious flavor of the past. Okay, maybe it was an isolated problem. Ordered a cheese plate. Took 20 minutes, and when it arrived, it was so sparse it was almost comical. The walnut bread was stiff and hard and the cheese wedge was very small. Two strikes. So, surely the chocolate martini would still be delicious, right? It was okay, but in a chocolate milk kind of way ? no discernable liquor. Summary ? prices up, quality down, portions smaller. How sad. What happened? Is this place on its way out of business, a victim of a bad economy? Did the ownership change? I want the old Chocolate Bar back! more

Outside is more appealing than the menu 9/8/2010

After dining at a local restaurant in Decatur, we thought we could stop for dessert at the CB. The first thing was the paper menus that were woren or in need or re-printing. Next was the cakes. I know my desserts and noted that these were Southern Sweets Cakes. Nancy would be too disappointed to know that her cake are being served with out the fresh quality that she is known to bake. more

Trying to find a GOOD restaurant in Atlanta 9/4/2010

My husband and I took two out of town guests to the Chocolate Bar. I had heard really good things about this place from the reviews in various papers. As a resident of Atlanta for 10 years I have been trying very hard to find more than a handful of consistantly good places to eat. OTP/ITP, I don't care; Atlanta just doesn't live up to other cities I've lived in (including San Fransico, Washington and even Cleveland). Bouyed by the great reviews, we took this couple out for drinks and deserts. Fifty dollars later for 4 almost nonalcholic drinks and one very small souffle with a spoonful of ice cream I found myself disappointed again. The poor overworked waitress tried hard and she did a very good job but she was the only one there making drinks, food and serving. In the hour we were there we counted over seven groups leaving without being served. Only one of the drinks even romotely tasted alcholic. Why would the owner put only one person there during the Decatur Book Fair? And how did the owner think he could get away with charging outrageous prices for so little? more

Great post-dinner date spot 5/25/2010

I just moved to Decatur, and this is the perfect spot to go after dinner for dessert/wine/cocktails.....We got a couple glasses of great cab, a chocolate martini- yum! and truffles to pair. The service was fine? Not exceptional but it's a pretty intimate atmosphere so no worries for us.... Highly recommend for fun spot after dinner or for light apps before...Will be back! Pros: Nice atmosphere, good drinks! Cons: Parking more

Good drinks 5/2/2010

The drinks are good but menu very limited and does not appear to be fresh Thought the showcase should be more appealing with fresh candy, so go for drinks, avoid food Pros: drinks Cons: slow more

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. 2/14/2010

This place has really gone downhill. I went a few years ago on a date and it was lovely... bistro like ambiance, a bit overpriced but overall a good experience. Went a few nights ago. Service was probably the worst I've experienced in Atlanta, and I live in L5P (that's saying something). Staff knew NOTHING about the wines, foods, or anything else, and overall seemed clueless and pretentious...which was pretty funny, because there was absolutely nothing to be pretentious about. Ordered the 2 cheese app. It was literally a wedge of stilton and some 'goat cheese' (it was NOT goat cheese) served COLD (uh, no) with 4 tiny rounds of raisin bread. I'm talking smaller than cracker sized bread rounds. For 2 wedges of cheese? They should take a page from Ecco and do antipasti correctly. We received no forks. Just knives. I'm not sure if we were supposed to eat cold cheese sliced with the knives or what. I asked for some crostini, crackers, or bread, and was told they had none by an almost gleeful waitress. We also ordered the salami app. This was even better. Something akin to spam (seriously, CHEAP quality salami sliced up in weird rounds, think pepperoni rejects from pizza only thicker), dumped into a glass bowl with some awful soy sauce/sweet sauce concoction and sesame seeds on top. Basically, a bowl of meat with, no joke, plastic toothpicks on the side. I finally gave up and attempted to stab the 'salami' rounds with a small slice of cheese. Still wasn't very good. Anyway. Since our mostly absent waitress had no other bread, crackers, crostini, or other carbs in the restaurant, apparently, my somewhat daring friend asked if we could have a box for our cold cheese wedges to take home (by then they'd be an edible room temp!!). The waitress acted again put off, and 10 minutes later threw 2 round plastic containers on the table.. (tossed is perhaps more accurate) saying they also didn't have 'to go' boxes. Interesting! So, in a nutshell: maybe they have good chocolate martinis. But uh, so do a lot of places in Atlanta, and you can get them for higher quality with real service and food that isn't being served straight out of amateur hour. If, however, you'd like some rock hard cold cheese, a bowl of meat drenched in watery soy, and toothpicks to eat it with for about twenty dollars, stop on by! Pros: Good concept? Some people like bowls of meat? Cons: Everything else... gross food, poor service, just bad. more

Very underwhelmed 7/4/2009

We went there with my mom for an after dinner dessert for her birthday. We stood around waiting for someone to seat us and finally just sat ourselves. My mom had the Mexican coffee which was delicious...everything after that was a disappointment. We ordered the brownie but didn't realize it had beer ice cream on it. We told the waiter we didn't like it at all and he just laughed and walked away. We also had ordered the death by chocolate and all it was too tiny blobs of chocolate - hardly the ""large"" dessert we had expected from the menu. Pros: Location Cons: Food, Service, Price more

  • The Scene -- A warm and inviting atmosphere--russet walls, dark woods, exposed brick and a gleaming case filled with chocolate--entice lingering at this low-key boite and the staff doesn't mind at all. Servers are unabashedly enthusiastic and highly responsive; a slightly wrinkled nose brings a quick, cheerful fix. Sometimes you can catch a glimpse at the on-site chocolatier at work. -- -- The Food -- Light savories balance the sweets. The curried popcorn is genius snacking with a house-made limoncello cocktail or a watermelon cava spritzer. There is also Georgia pecan soup.
