Best

I just moved to Decatur, and this is the perfect spot to go after dinner for dessert/wine/cocktails.....We got a couple glasses of great cab, a chocolate martini- yum! and truffle...

Worst

I visited Chocolate Bar for the first time on Friday. It was freezing outside and I really wanted a hot dessert after dinner. So, we left our dinner restaurant and headed to Choco...

Too...Weird 1/22/2009

I was very excited to try out the Chocolate Bar. Unfortunately, the food was strange and overpriced. There is a teeny, tiny menu, including a few savory snacks, then a few ?inventive? yet overpriced desserts. $9 to 10 for a dessert is way too much money. The sausage was extremely dry and as salty as a salt lick. Several people had a bite and were grossed out. A one inch square piece of chocolate costs several dollars, and the taste was no better than Alon?s or Godiva. The desserts were not as one would imagine from the menu descriptions. A piece of cake sounds normal enough, but what if it is enclosed in a bell cloche scented with a sprig of lavender, and you have to pour a shot glass of strangely infused liqueur over it? The cloche had the heat trapped and the cake was so hot it burnt the tongue, and got soggy. Puddings were weird, as well. I am an adventurous eater and have a master?s (and many years of experience) in the hospitality field; however, this place was just too ?out there? (even for NYC, much less for Decatur). It may be good for a glass of wine or a chocolate martini, but save the weirdo desserts for the Jetsons. Pros: Give them credit for trying, have a drink Cons: Weird, overpriced food that just doesn't work more

expensive romantic place 10/20/2008

My boyfriend and I went here to end our anniversary date night out. It was on a Monday night so there weren't a lot of people there which was perfect for us. The waiter was really nice, knowledgable, and quick. I had the pumpkin pie martini and he had the chocolate bar martini. Both martinis were great-nice blend of alcohol and flavor. He had the Oreo bar dessert and I think I had some fruity dessert which was AWESOME! The truffles were great to take home. However, I was extremely surprised at the price. Our bill was more than $50 for just 2 drinks and 2 2nd course desserts! It was a nice place, but I wouldn't go there often. I need more variety for desserts, but I have stopped by to buy some more truffles! Pros: ambience, different types of desserts that you can't find just anywhere Cons: parking, PRICE more

Mascarpone Cream instead of Whipped Cream...yum! 9/29/2008

I absolutely love Chocolate Bar! It's the chocolate lover's delight! Absolutely best chocolate martini I've ever had. The service at the bar has always been exceptional. And they have a 73 (?) single year port that is to die for! Pros: Mascarpone Whipped Cream! Cons: Maybe a bit casual for a romantic evening? more

Not impressed! 7/26/2008

After hearing so many great things about this place, I was thoroughly disappointed with my first visit. Definitely not worth the hype the local papers have been giving it since it opened. As mentioned in the other reviews, the wait staff was uninterested and inattentive, starting the evening off on a bad note. You wouldn?t expect this sort of service in any restaurant in downtown Decatur! The deserts were not all that they have been cracked up to be, and I left there feeling that I would have rather had a piece of the chocolate cake at Watershed down the street instead! Pros: Candlelit tables on street Cons: Underwhelming service, no parking, not enough value for cost more

Love the concept, but 7/15/2008

It was wonderful to see downtown Decatur graced with such an original concept. Unfortuantely, the owner seems to be unable to have pulled it off. What started as a brilliant idea to serve unique, and sometimes bizarre, dessert items has morphed beyond the realm of the mundane. Friends have raved about the martinis here, yet when I tried one I immediately became sick to my stomach from the copious quantities of flavored simple syrup that had been added to the drink. It was enough that I left Chocolate Bar to trudge up the hill to Sage to have the friendly blonde woman with the great smile (can't think of her name--Michelle?--and I don't think she's there anymore) mix me a true craft cocktail. My times at Chocolate Bar have been characterized by long waits, indifferent service and mediocre ""treats."" It was a wonderful concept that truly failed in its application and I can't help but think that it was simply the wrong person at the helm. After all, whatever happened to the wonderful chefs who helped open the place? For as much as this joint touts its earliest reviews, those reviews were all about them. Pros: a unique concept Cons: fails in its application more

Revolutionized Desserts 7/8/2008

I have been waiting for something like this to come around for so long. The Chocolate Bar offers a much needed alternative to the ordinary slices of cake, brownie, or cheesecake. This revolutionary concept is new to the small town of Decatur but i think we all have a lot to learn. At The Chocolate Bar it wasn't simply about what you are getting for your money. it is the elegance and art to the dessert. The warm inviting environment creates a perfect spot for date night or girls night out. The staff, even when completely overwhelmed, still managed to be hardworking and knowledgeable about the food. I think that the small, local environment creates a feeling of true southern hospitality within the staff of the Chocolate Bar. Overall, it was a great experience! Pros: knowledgeable staff Cons: size more

Swanky place with unintimidating choices - loved it! 6/27/2008

My husband and I had drinks and dessert here on Wednesday night - The Chocolate Bar and Espresso martini are some of the best I've ever had. We sat outside and it was a good crowd. The server was very attentive. The best part was the guy behind the bar - he was soooo helpful and enthusiastic. We had trouble deciding on which truffles to get and he gave us some great opinions on which he loved. (We had the ones with grand marnier, tequila, caramel, and some others - they were all great and FRESH!) more

Paradise! 6/9/2008

I love chocolate and have been so thrilled to find the chocolate bar. It is a little out of the way if you live OTP, but it is worth the drive. Cons: Need to set up the outside tables that are always stacked up more

Nice date spot 2/29/2008

The unintimidating wine list and out of this world martinis at Chocolate Bar made for a nice romantic after-dinner spot. The service is friendly, patient, and well-groomed. The atmosphere is casually romantic and the chocolate is bam amazing! Pros: Service, drinks, atmosphere, wine list Cons: small space, food limited more

Much More Than a Chocolate Martini 2/27/2008

The impressive chocolate drinks at Chocolate Bar were so sippable and the passion fruit gummies turned me as extatic as Precious Pup, but the FOOD has changed my life! I've had dinner at ALL the great restaurants inside the Atlanta perimeter and all over Europe as well, and nothing comes close to the INTENSE flavors of the Chocolate Bar's Valentine's Day three courses and bonbon special. The chef is a genius, the staff is good-looking, fast and cordial, the clientele is just beautiful, and the atmosphere is 'chocolatier' still with Ed playing classic guitar on Wednsday night. --CCR Pros: Easy Parking, Mind boggling dishes, Superior wine Cons: Decatur is a long ways off for me more

order more than one course - of course 2/25/2008

I've been to che Chocolate Bar numerous times now, since I live nearby, and I have several favorite items like the hot chocolate and the oreo dessert. However, on valentines my husband and I went for the prix fix menu and that's where I really learned how to enjoy the best of the Chocolate Bar - you've got to try several courses together. Pros: great for open minded people who like to experience and learn about food Cons: crowded on weekends more

Great staff, amazing ambiance 2/13/2008

The staff here has been around since opening, and they know their stuff! The employees seem to actually enjoy their jobs and so they take care of the customers. I had a great experience, the food was different, but delicious. I even met the owner, and what a sweet lady she is! Pros: Chocolate, service, ambiance Cons: too small more

Get a side of attitude with your dessert. Soooo disappointing. 1/15/2008

We went last Sunday night. The staff had ZIP for personality- they were socializing with each other as if we were interrupting their party. The place looked like it was going out of business to be honest, she said they' d had a busy weekend? Still, y'all ever heard of restocking the wine cubbies? We were very excited about going here, had read the review in Atlanta magazine, but were more disappointed than we had been in a long time with a place in Decatur. Maybe this was an off-night or they had the B-team staff in, who knows? Nonetheless, it left a bad taste in our mouth, and we won't be recommending The Chocolate Bar or going back anytime soon. By the way, the food didn't make up for the chilly service. What a shame. Don't waste your time or money, definitely no Southern hospitality here..... Pros: In Decatur Cons: Personality of servers, quality of food for price, ambiance, variety. more

terrible service 1/2/2008

I was excited to go to this bar. When my friend and I arrived we were greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The service we received, however, was disgraceful . Our server got our order and did not return for 20 mins, we waited as the hostess and another server walked by us and chatted with friends, Finally we alerted the hostess that we were being ignored, and she let our server know. This place has great potentional but the staff is rude and annoying, not worth the effort. Pros: Nice space Cons: staff and prices more

don't go if you want tasty chocolate or to relax with your friends 12/19/2007

I was very disappointed in my recent experience at the Chocolate Bar. I went with a bunch of friends and, despite the fact we were buying drinks and chocolate, the owner/manager came over to our table and told us how much money they were losing from our big table taking up so much space ($700 to be exact despite the fact there were empty tables). Every few minutes they asked us if we were ready to go and refused to bring us water. Aside from that fact that they were rude, the chocolate was not anything special. The drinks were not very good, I felt sick after my chocolate martini. I also ordered another signature item - the Oreo - which was very sweet but not very chocolaty. You would be better off spending 2.99 on a bag of real oreos and get more chocolate and less rudeness. Cons: service, drinks, food more

Get a new manager and I will think about coming back 12/13/2007

I must recant my previous compliments from before. I went back to the Chocolate Bar to indugle in a bottle of wine and several chocolates and was ASKED TO MOVE TO ANOTHER TABLE!!!! I was livid.. I have never been so insulted and been asked to move in the middle of my dining experience. On top of that shortly after I moved the two table next to me became free which is what I was told was the reason I had to move in the first place. I was not pleased. My waiter was again wonderful but I could not get over what happend. I fully intend on not going there anymore and seeing to it that the owner knows about their management. Because they will no longer get my money! Pros: Any pros are overshadowed by the negatives Cons: too bright still, management was rude and disrespectful more

Does not live up to the hype 12/12/2007

I have never posted a review about a restaurant in Atlanta before, but my past experiences at The Chocolate Bar in Decatur have been bad enough to warn other people not to go. I live in downtown Decatur, and I was thrilled when I found out a dessert/wine/cocktail bar was coming last summer. The first time I went, I wasn't completely disappointed, but I also wasn't impressed. The dessert menu is very limited and the portions are tiny. The cocktails are good, no question, but you can go to several other places in Decatur with better service, better prices and equally as nice atmospheres. Though underwhelmed, I decided to give it another try a few months later. I left with the same ""ehh"" feeling, this time with a little more annoyance due to the fact that the waitress was hitting shamelessly on my boyfriend (when it was just me and him dining...). This past Sunday, we decided to give it a final go. It was around 9 pm, and while there were other patrons, it was by no means busy. Someone sat us at a table, and then we waited. And waited. And waited. Several servers passed by our table but didn't give us a second look. After 15 minutes, we got up and went to Carpe Diem for our dessert and drinks instead. I've heard similar experiences from other friends (""bad service,"" ""too small menu""), so I know it's not only me. Pros: Good location, fun drinks Cons: Bad service, limited menu for what it is more

Happy Hour? 12/4/2007

It's my understanding that Happy Hour is illegal in Decatur. Pros: nice ambience Cons: incredibly long waits because of small space and leisurely pace (a pro and a con) more

Good Happy Hour! 11/2/2007

Quaint Cozy place to relax during Happy Hour. The location is convenient from all Atlantic traffic!! more

Kinda Small Kinda Cool 10/15/2007

Being from NYC it takes a lot for me to say I like a place. My friend and I stop in on a Wed. night. We def. fell for this lil place, loving the decor and the staff, was all so nice.. Our drinks..of course having to do with chocolate were all so yummy. The chocolate martini is def. worth getting. Though, the place is charming its kinda hard to have a convo without feeling like the people next to you can get into it, So if you can sit outside and enjoy the scene. Great place to go to start the night or maybe to end the night after having a nice lil dinner. Pros: the drinks are great Cons: kinda small more

Owner Message
  • The Scene -- A warm and inviting atmosphere--russet walls, dark woods, exposed brick and a gleaming case filled with chocolate--entice lingering at this low-key boite and the staff doesn't mind at all. Servers are unabashedly enthusiastic and highly responsive; a slightly wrinkled nose brings a quick, cheerful fix. Sometimes you can catch a glimpse at the on-site chocolatier at work. -- -- The Food -- Light savories balance the sweets. The curried popcorn is genius snacking with a house-made limoncello cocktail or a watermelon cava spritzer. There is also Georgia pecan soup.
