Whoever wrote about the burned stale food at Charlies had it mixed up. Always fresh, always perfectly cooked. And just hamburgers and I think hotdogs. No fries, no onion rings. Try a burger and get a milkshake with it. Heaven. About as good as Charlies - maybe even better, is Zac's (4 or 5 locations now). Had a Zac's (in Folsom) this week and, maybe 'cause I was hungry, was one of the best burgers ever. Zac's also have fries and onion rings and milkshakes. Ummmmm. OK, Charlies is great - but Zac's is Nicer and cleaner than Charlies, and the people are more personable and friendlier. There ya go. Pros: good fresh hand made burgers Cons: no cons, really more

I went to Charlie's for the first time today and the last time. The burger was burned. I asked for onion rings instead of frenchfries but the order came up with burned frenchfries. The girl was sweet but inexperienced. She took the basket back and at least ten minutes later had the onion rings ready. She handed me a basket of onion rings. When I told her I hadn't gotten my hamburger, she looked around for my original basket and handed it to me with the cold soggy fries still in the basket. Needless to say the hamburger was also cooled off and as I said, burned. When this young lady called out a retrieval number she would also say ""cheeseburger with cheddar"" for instance. Several people would go up to the counter only having heard the description and she would let them take the order without finding out what number they had. This obviously left someone else without their order. The guy making the burgers was getting on her case but no one was helping her to get it right. I should have asked for my money back and left but I was so hungry by the time the food came that I went ahead and ate it. Dumb move! It sat like a lead balloon in my stomach all day. I've been going to Charlie's for approx 40 plus yrs and I've sat with 5 generations on the stools provided. My family has been going to Charlies since it was founded. We've taken countless friends and family over the yrs and I feel the burgers are the best I've ever eaten. I don't get there often, but when I do, I eat as many as possible with a Blk & Wht shake. I heard that Charlie's was supposed to have great hamburgers and man was I disappointed. The place is a true hamburger shack which was cool, but their burgers are as small as White Castle but cost three times as much, and White Castle burgers taste better. I would have rated them 1 star if the burgers weren't unique. But in this case, unique was bad. I would NOT recommend Charlie's burgers. Its like they ripped this place off the boardwalk. They sell small burgers at a cheap price. . similar to white castle, but not quite so small and not at all crappy. The burgers are delicious, and I believe they are hand formed right there so you know you aren't getting some frozen patty. They go great with a milkshake. Pros: The Burgers! When i was in high school my friends and I would go to Charlie's after soccer games. Their hamburgers are sensational. The prices for everything we very reasonable. The place is very small but service is always fast. Sorry to any of those who think you are going to get a fine dining experience because you are not. I dont understand how people think the burgers are too small when they only cost a couple of dollars, what do you expect? most people won't write reviews that are time-consuming if they don't actually like the food so due to the fact that pretty much every reasonable person wrote a good review, its safe to say it's a good place to get burgers. I grew up in Havertown in the 70s and would be taken by my parents to Charlie's for treats, celebrations, and quick stops on the way to the airport. But it's been a long time since I'ved lived in the Delaware watershed, and am in fact now in Ireland. What I wouldn't give for a bag of cheeseburgers ""loaded, for the outside!"" I've been going to Charlie's since I was a little girl. It's not meant to impress by being a large, fancy restaurant and for those of you who don't get that, maybe you are better off going to some chain restaurant instead. Charlie's has been successful for so long due to the fresh ingredients and fast service. The burgers aren't the biggest but they are tasty!!! You can't go wrong with a black and white shake and a Charlie's Special. I love how they still use the same plastic cups from long ago, too. Nothing's been updated and every time I go there, it brings me back to my childhood. You'd be a fool not to try this place. And if you can't appreciate the food rather than the atmosphere, then you can't call yourself and foodie and shouldn't be criticizing any restaurant on this site until you understand what makes good food just that. I do NOT understand why everyone loves Charlie's so much. Maybe it's just one of those things where one person says it's a great place, then another person agrees and it's just something that becomes accepted by everyone just because ""someone"" said it was the greatest place ever. My parents went to Charlie's before I was born, then as an incentive for me when I got my toncils out they told me as soon as I got better we could go to Charlie's! As I dated my soon to be husband and we went to Charlie's several times a week. We were asked to come in our wedding clothes on our wedding day, we did go, but we changed first. The guys there gave us a cheeseburger candle! My kids love Charlie's! That's three generations and over 50 years of Charlie's fanatics! They must be doing something right! more

Without fail, everytime we visit Philly I cajole my husband who is a Springfield native to take me to Charlies. I long for a cheeseburger loaded accompanied by a black and white. The first time my husband took me to this haven of burgers in 1983, I could not believe how tasty the burgers were. I was smitten with the tradition surrounding this humbling cheesebuger shack. On that initial visit I reordered two times for a total of five burgers. In my opinion there is no other burger/shake joint in the US like Charlies - unless you happen to find yourself on Long Beach Island, NJ at The Holiday Snack Bar (a close 2nd) ordering cheesburgers w/special relish, shake, and a mega size slice of homemade cake. $12 bucks for 3 of the thinnest burgers ever and 2 decent-ish milkshakes? Any diner can make a similar meal. While the Burgers and milkshakes are to die for, parking is a hassle and they aren't lying when they say burger ""shack"" The place looks like it's falling apart.
