Great food, cool staff but can be hard to find! 7/10/2009

Rembrandts has a copy of a painting by the Dutch master of the same name decorating its back wall. Much of the menu us written in Dutch and English. All 3 of us had tough time finding it, as it's kind of hidden away near the intersection of Houston & McKinney. They do have free parking!\r \r I met 2 friends here for a casual Friday evening. They had cocktails & dinner. I had beers and a snack. We all enjoyed our food. Like any European place worth its salt, they serve good bread...my friend ordered some baguette. I enjoyed my ""Bitterballen"" basically curried beef meatballs immensely. LIke others have said, our food took a while in coming out. Rembrandts has a very comfortable atmosphere and a friendly owner. The waitress was cute and tried very hard to please us. Check this place out!\r BTW: I think I've writeen over 20 reviews! This is not a ""fake."" Pros: Excellent beer on tap, good food, loved the owner & waitress Cons: Can be hard to find & food can take a long time more

Fake reviews? 3/19/2009

This message is in response to IHateFakeReviews' review. First off, I would like to thank you for visiting my establishment and writing a fair review. I hope you did enjoy your experience with us. Second, as far as the fake reviews go, I can assure you that all reviews (besides this one) have been posted by others than myself or anyone else with an interest in Rembrandt's, other than keeping it in business because they enjoy the place. I can tell you I do recognize some reviewers by the way they wrote the review, as they are very likely some of our regular guests. To me this is one of the greatest compliments a pub proprietor can get. It far exceeds a review of a one time patron who might have caught us on a bad or great day. These are the people that have kept Rembrandt's alive throughout the early stage of establishing the business and have witnessed many events (ups and downs), yet they still choose to visit us on a weekly basis. I am very proud to be of service to them. Hopefully we can count you as one of them. Thank you, Ronny Smeink, Owner Rembrandt's Dutch Pub Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Not as good as the fake reviews say but still good 2/10/2009

Most of the reviews for this spot read like advertisements and are by reviewers who have only done the one review. I would read them with skepticism.\r \r That being said, I enjoyed my visit to Rembrandt's. They have bottles of my favorite beer - Lindeman's Raspberry Lambic - as well as many others in bottle or on tap. In short, their beer selection is substantial.\r \r I had the French Onion Soup and the Fried Goat Cheese Salad. French onion soup and goat cheese are two of my favorite things on Earth. The combination was plenty for a meal. The ingredients were fresh and the food all tasted good. For a bar, both offerings were solid though neither would compete in a ""Best of Dallas"" competition. My girlfriend would say the same of the burger and fries - both decent offerings but not the best she's ever had.\r \r The atmosphere was pleasant - kind of old-worldy, which is appropriate since that is what they're going for. There is no smoking allowed inside, which is nice when I'm eating. \r \r Contrary to some of the negative reviews, we found the service to be friendly and attentive. It wasn't very busy so maybe conditions were right, but they seemed very happy to have us there and everything was served in a timely fashion.\r \r I dislike chain restaurants almost as much as fake reviews and in the West End, Rembrandt's is a decent alternative. I would recommend it and I would go back again.\r \r more

Can't Get Enough of Rembrandt 8/28/2008

What can one say about Cafe Rembrandt that hasn't been said. I have had a vast majority of the menu items and they never fail to deliver. The beer selection gets better and better each time I stop in. The ambiance is very elegant and relaxing all at the same time. The staff have always been attentive, very courteous and make me feel as though I'm spending time with my closest friends. \r \r I have always been impressed with the Velvet Kittens and various musical acts they have in on the weekends, but was presently surprised one Friday evening when they had two DJ's on the patio spinning records. If you haven't been to Cafe Rembrandt you are missing one of the best spots in Dallas. \r \r It is nice to see so many positive reviews here. Based on my experiences at Cafe Rembrandt I have to say I am perplexed by the two poor reviews. This is something I have never seen and I have been in while it was slow, and packed to the brim. You rock Cafe Rembrandt. more

I love this place!!! The daily Specials are awesome!! 8/27/2008

I love Cafe Rembrandt! It is in the Brewery Building between Victory Plaza and the West End, so we go here often before and after Stars games and Mavericks games. The owners are wonderful and are always throwing special events for American and Dutch holidays and occasions. There's a DJ on the HUGE patio on most Friday nights and bands inside most Friday and Saturday nights. The Velvet Kittens preform thier berlesque show twice a month. If you haven't been, you are missing out, it is SO fun. They have cool specials every single day, like 1/2 Price food on Tuesdays and Pint Night on Wednesdays when you can take home the featured beer's pint glass. Also, my favorite night is Thursdays because it is 'Ladies' BOGO Drinks"" Buy one Get one Free!!! \r \r It's just a really cool gathering place that's relaxed. Unlike a lot of Dallas bars, there's never a cover and there's no judgement. You don't go to be seen, you go to hang out, listen to good music, play pool, darts, have a bite. Everyone is so friendly. I meet someone new every time I go!!! Pros: Great Specials, Live Music on the Weekends, Good Variety in Food and Drinks Cons: Closed on Sundays more

Good Food, Good Entertainment 7/20/2008

I've been to Cafe Rembrandt several times and always have a great experience. Fish and chips are always good and the fried goat cheese salad is a favorite. Also, they have live burlesque shows by the dallas burlesque troupe the Velvet Kittens. My friends and I always go here for good food and awesome live entertainment. This is a great spot! more

Keeps Going Downhill 6/19/2008

I love this city and love to see restaurants and small business owners do well here. I have sporadically visited this bar and cafe. The quality of service and food continues to go down. The menu is very limited, and everybody who looks like they work there seems bothered to be there. I have brought different friends and business associates with me on my different visits when I have business in the building, and we leave disappointed. I gave it several chances. Pros: free parking and easy to get to the place Cons: service really poor more

Great Find! 3/11/2008

My husband and I decided to visit Cafe Rembrandt after reading the most stellar review I have ever read about a restaurant in the Dallas Observer. The way the reviewer wrote his article had us drooling to try the food he had tried. We normally have our favorite hangouts; and it is really hard to change your hangout habits, but throwing caution to the wind, we decided to try this place out. And, boy weren't we surprised! The food was just as excellent as described in the article, we've been back many times. We've been to the Mardi Gras festivities and absolutely loved the live show. The live music is great as well and on a few occasions they have had a DJ. The variety of entertainment has been great and absolutely genius, it makes going back enjoyable! I'm impressed by how many consistent 4 star+ reviews this place has received as well. Very rare for a new place to be this consistent. The two bad reviewers should try it again, they may be pleasantly surprised. Pros: Excellent environment, great front porch, free parking Cons: Not one more

Best Live Music on Weekends 3/8/2008

We go often on Friday nights. The jazz band is highly professional and entertaining and the staff is very nice and welcoming. They even remembered who I was the second time I went there. The beer selection is refined and unexpensive. The food is delicious and comes freshly cooked and in good sizes. The location and the elegant , even if easy-going atmosphere ,would make you think that the bill would be very expensive. The prices are instead in the medium-low average. During the long happy hours, the unexpensive prices become absolutely ""cheap!"" Parking is free, an additional attraction if compared to the fares in West End Dallas. Pros: Ambience, Parking, Service, Live Music Cons: Quite hidden spot in West End. You have to look for it more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! 3/7/2008

What's going on People! If you're here that means you're interested in Cafe Rembrandt. Let me tell you folks that this Pub is one of the best I've ever been too. The people there are awesome! Great Staff, very attentive to the customers and they make you feel welcomed! Even the owner came out to greet us! My friends and I went in and the first impression we got was ?WOW!? The environment is great, very relaxing and cozy. Even the front patio is nice,..loved it. Awesome place for a Happy Hour or a date night. They have a great selection of imported European beers that taste awesome; always cold, very cold,..They go down nice crisp. My favorite is the Duvel. This Pub even has a live Jazz band on Fridays. Very entertaining and pleasant to the ears while you enjoy your meal. My favorite Menu items are the Fish and Chips and the Beef Sate with peanut sauce, cooked perfect, tastes great!. If you?re looking for a great night, great dinner or lunch, this is the spot. CHECK IT OUT! Pros: Parking is free! Cons: I've been there a few times now,..haven't found any. more

Victory Park's true neighborhood pub! 3/5/2008

I've been trying to make it out to this little Dutch pub I heard so much about for the last two months and I'm glad I finally did. Some friends and I decided to visit Rembrandt's before going to the House of Blues for a concert (I read the cafe had free parking!). I was pleasantly surprised when we walked into the place on a Saturday night. Immediately the atmosphere felt inviting and welcoming. The place was a lot bigger than I expected, yet it felt cozy. We sat at the bar where the bartender made a suggestion to try one of the European beers they have on tap. \r They have a great selection of beers, wines and liquor, including Absinthe with the actual ""worm wood"". The bartender poured me one using the traditional method which includes a slotted spoon and a sugar cube. \r Then I proceeded to ask what he would recommend on the menu. Following his suggestion I ordered the seafood chowder (home made) and had the Dutch burger as entree. My friends ordered the tenderloin and fish and chips. The food was fantastic (better than you expect from a pub). After dinner I had a freshly made cappuccino. Then I switched to beer. I was going for a Hoegaarden, but the bartender told me that they don't carry that anymore and offered me a substitute. \r There was a variety of different people of different ages present and a lot of them seemed to be regular patrons, all with one thing in common; they seemed to be having a good time.\r After a while someone who I assumed was the manager or owner came up to us to see if we were doing alright and asked us if this was our first visit to Rembrandt's. He mentioned that they were planning on booking some live music soon. \r We enjoyed our visit and I believe that this hidden treasure could be the new non-pretentious neighborhood pub of the Victory Park area. It's right by the House of Blues and not too far from the American Airlines Center. Great place to go before and after a show/game. And hey, the free parking is a plus!\r Pros: Atmosphere, great patio, staff, beer selection, free parking Cons: Hard to find, but easy to get to. more

Bad service 11/4/2007

I only read good things about this place and decided to go on a double date there with another couple. It was 5:30 on a Saturday evening. We ordered a few beers and beef carpaccio as our appetizer. It was tasteless and could have used more dressing for the greens. The beef tenderloin was small, but tender and good mushroom gravy. The ribs were bland. The meat tasted like a bad fridge taste. It did not taste fresh at all. The onion soup was good, but not many onions or cheese in it. It was mostly liquid. The caesar salad had way too much dressing on it. You could not see any green! The waitress said she was the owner and we were surprised because we would have expected exceptional service from the owner. The food took over 40 mins to arrive at our table with no apology from the waitress/owner. There was only two other tables in the restaurant when we arrived. Other guests looked impatient as well. Service was slow and inattentive, the food took way too long for an almost empty restaurant, the waitress was not well-informed of what was good on the menu and did not describe or try to sell the best items, when we asked a question to the waitress/owner, her replies were short and rude. The time spent waiting for the waitress/owner to arrive back to our table with the credit card slip seemed endless. We walked up to the bar to pick it up. It was a unanimous decision that we will not return there nor recommend it to any of our friends. Very disappointed. Cons: wait service more

Great little dutch restaurant/pub 10/9/2007

This is a great little hole in the wall with great atmosphere and great food. The beer is cheap with happy hour until 9pm which made my german beer 3.50 (my gf's ace pear was also 3.50). The food was great, the included salad showed no hint of iceberg and was bursting with fresh greens and topped neatly if not eclecticly with a sliver of orange. The beef sateh was delicious(although i must admit it was my first time to have the dish). We elected for the ""chef's choice"" for our dessert and were rewarded with a fruit medley topped with a slice of dark chocolate and whipped cream. Ronny, the owner, was our server and you got the feeling that he put himself into the place (like the little after-dinner chocolates with pictures of Rembrandt paintings on them which he has his parents send him from holland). Pros: good food, reasonable prices, great service, relaxed atmosphere, plenty of parking/seating Cons: limited number of entrees more

Great place to have a party! 10/5/2007

I had my birthday party at Cafe Rembrandt and it turned out really great! We had a party of 26 and were able to reserve the whole upstairs of the bar and restaurant for the evening. My friends and I enjoyed the banquet style food setting and the staff's excellent customer service. We had beef sateh and baby back ribs. WOW!! Everything was prepared right and was loved by my guest! No wonder why we've all return to hang out there.\r \r I highly recommend trying out the ""walk in the woods"" shots! It comes in a pretty sage green color and taste like watermelon juice!!! Pros: Customer service, atmosphere, cost, location, cleanliness. more

Dutch Grand Cafe Has A Lot To Offer 8/30/2007

I stopped in to this tucked away gem for the first time to have lunch. The decoration is straight from Holland... the yellow walls lend warmth and a collection of Dutch antiques lines the wall closest to the kitchen. Directly in view when you walk into the restaurant is giant reproduction of one of Rembrandt's seminal works on canvas: Night Watch. The theme is consistent and quite well done.\r \r \r On my first visit, I ordered the beef croquette. It was served with freshly ground mustard and frites that evoked memories of European vacations. The beef was seasoned perfectly and the mustard had more nose tingling credibility than I was expecting. I finished off my meal with a coffee made from the shining machine at the end of the bar and smoked a cigarette sitting on the patio.\r \r \r The service was attentive and the food arrived promptly and exactly as ordered. I have since returned to Cafe Rembrandt quite regularly and now enjoy the bar even more than the excellent food. The owner, Holland native Ronnie Smeink, has missed no detail in setting up a wonderful place to eat and drink.\r \r \r The pricing on the menu is reasonable and represents excellent value for the quality of the food served and the atmosphere that it is served in. Pros: Beautifully decorated, great food, excellent drink selection Cons: Dallas does not allow smoking in restaurants more

What a joke of bar 7/26/2007

I have been to this place two seperate times now. Once for lunch on a monday and once for a drink mid-week, happy hour. Talk about a joke. There was nobody there either time. The time we went for lunch it seemed more important for the server to talk to the other employees than it was us to take care of us, the guests. A big disappointment for what seems to be a neat place. The manager did speak with us and he seemed very polite, but that doesnt make up for the lack of service and attentiveness by the staff. At one point the gentleman behind the bar even came by our table to see if there was anything we needed. Too bad our server couldnt be more attentive. I wont be back. more

Great place to check out!! 4/27/2007

Not only is this a beautifully decorated bar/restaraunt the food is really good. Its very much like an Amsterdam style bar. The patio had live music the night we were there and it sounded really good. and it was during happy hour!! Make sure to check this place out anytime. Lunch, Dinner, Happy Hour too! Great food to go along with the atmosphere! Pros: Great happy hour and the patio is mighty inviting Cons: dont think there are any....really! more

Awesome Place to Hang Out 4/24/2007

This place is awesome! I loved it the owners are real Europeans who definately got the ambiance down. Love it! I think its a great place to start happy hour! more

Absolute Must Try! Great atmosphere, food and service! 4/14/2007

Finally something different in Dallas. The sandwiches are wonderful, quick in and out for lunch and the patio is perfect for relaxing after work. Parking is a breeze, also easy to eat and then walk over to catch a game at the AAC. The atmosphere has a real European feel and the staff is very friendly. Must try! Pros: Great food, easy parking, something different. Cons: Haven't found any. more
