Real Shame for the Caribbean Cuisine. Stay AWAY!!! 12/28/2010

Latino no no nada q ver, 6/23/2010

Cons: decepcionada more

it was alright. 3/7/2010

i was born in the dominican republic, so believe me, i know dominican food well. their ropa vieja was not as good as i expected and the magu was nothing like the mangu i eat in the dominican republic. everything was extremely over salted. however, there were some good things: boiled yuca, arroz con guandules, chicharrones de pollo, and their mojo. the staff was friendly, but slow. it was also over priced, considering the quality of the food. Pros: good arroz con guandules and boiled yuca Cons: not very authentic, WAY too much salt more

Food Is Always Served Cold 10/2/2009

The restaurant has potential to be excellent. The staff is friendly, and they are understanding when the complaints are valid. However, the kitchen has some major drawbacks. Expect to wait an incredibly long time, as they have limited staff. When the food does arrive, it is ALWAYS cold!!! The rice and beans are always room temperature, as if they just pulled it out of a pot that has been sitting on the stove!! Two times my dish was returned, before I just gave up! By the time the rice and beans were warm, everything else was cold. They refried my tostones, and gave it back with a bite I had taken from it. I, unfortunately can't recommend a place that offers this service. Pros: Authentic Native Flavors Cons: Routinely Run Out of Their Popular Dishes more

Awesome place to eat and enjoy! 9/26/2009

I loved the food, Service and that it is like a hole in the wall. Thats what makes it awesome. Aside of course the great tasting food. I am a Puerto Rican from NYC and this is the closest i can get to home cooked meals from home. It takes me back to my grandma cooking int he kitchen :) Pros: Love Love Love the Plantain chips and sauce Cons: Nothing its all awesome Just small more

Best Tres Leches, Caipirinha, Great Food 4/1/2009

Started with Caipirinhas, beers and plantain/dip. Had pork, chicken, beef...each dish very tasty and the seasonings were unique and so flavorful. Nice size entres with 3 sides fill huge plate. Brought half home. Ended with Tres Leches cake which was HUGE. Fed 3 of us. Will be going back! Highly recommended. Drinks, dinner, dessert for 3, cost $70 Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, great food, North Austin Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Friendly prompt service and good caribbean fare 10/11/2008

Caribbean food seems to be hard to find in the Austin area, so I was eager to give this restaurant a try. We weren't sure where we were supposed to park. It's not well designated, so we parked in the lot next door. It was very clean and pleasant inside. The menu had a good assortment of choices. We ordered Mexican martinis (OK, nothing extra special),shrimp appetizer (fantastic), flank steak, and tres leches cake. The steak had a wonderful marinade on it, was cooked exactly as I requested and was quite tasty. The fried plantains were excellent! The food we had was defintely NOT SPICY, which pleased my husband especially. Our server was attentive and pleasant, but not pesty. The Tres Leches was the best I've ever had... I'm planning on ordering one for our Christmas party. Definitely a ""thumbs up"" for something out of the ordinary. more

Is there a fatal dose for garlic? 7/6/2008

Yikes! Cafe Mangu has two flavors ... unbelievably bland and horribly overseasoned. more

Anything but authentic Dominican cuisine. 6/28/2008

If you do not know what Dominican food is supposed to taste like, then you may be compelled to write a 5 stars review about this place. However, being born and raised in the Dominican Republic, I know what our food is supposed to taste like, and what I ate at this place tonight did not look (nor it tasted) Dominican at all. Cons: The restaurant's name is misleading as ""Mangu"" is a Dominican dish. The ""Dominican"" dishes I tried did not taste ""Dominican"". more

Incredible food. Excellent service! 4/21/2008

All I can say about this restaurant is that if you do not visit and lOVE the food, see a dr because something is wrong with you. Pros: Great service, quality fresh food, well made drinks, beautiful atmosphere Cons: You end up eating way too much for fear the experience is going to end! more

Great food, great service 11/5/2007

We found this restaurant online a few months back when my SO was craving for Carribean food (he is from that area). We were impressed with the food so on a trip to Austin last week, we made it a point to stop by again. We were not disappointed at all. Pros: Great food and great service Cons: Gravel parking lot more

Great Caribbean Food 9/4/2007

Although our waiter was blonde and blue eyes and seemed a lil bit on the ditzy side and most likely she doesnt speak spanish our experience was pretty darn good and we will be going back. The place is family owned and you can see them working the tables, the cashier and the kitchen. The ambiance is very nice, good merengue playing on the backgroung makes you wanna dance and the people diversity was great, i saw a chinese couple as well as a hindi and a korean couple, some latin families or just friends hanging out for some drinks and appetizers. The food was more than great, fresh with lots of taste... the mojo and chimichurri sauces were awesome, home made fried plantains very thinly fried up were placed at our table as soon as we ordered. You get three sides on every plate, you can pick from salad, soup or traditional caribbean sides like platanos maduros, tostones (patacones), yucca frita o hervida, mariquitas, etc. Pros: Ambiance was great, lots of diversity in clientel Cons: Parking floor is a bit rough on the way out and the place is small, but its just fine. more

Paella to die for 8/5/2007

Finally after a long search I have found the place the does Paella right! Great place family friendly with good food. Pros: Good food Cons: Call ahead for Paella more

Amazing food, don't miss it 1/19/2007

in Pflugerville, of all places. Called Cafe Mangu. My husband's Puerto Rican friend clued him in to this place at lunch. He took me for dinner and I think I may have actually died a little from foodie happiness. It's called Carribean food, but it focuses mainly on Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban food. I've never had Carribean food, but DAMN this stuff is amazing. Pros: Food, Friendly staff Cons: Location behind the Tinseltown more

Simply Fantastic!!! 8/15/2006

My wife & I went to Cuba Libre and loved it! Having Lived on the west coast for years, we've become accustomed to great food. And, Cuba Libre has great food! We had a shrimp appetizer, seasoned pork and shredded beef (ropa vieja) for dinner, and tres leches for dessert. Each item rated a perfect 10 in my book. And, the portions were so huge, it was enough for two meals each. Our waiter was excellent as well. The only drawbacks were the limited parking and the ""ordinary"" interior. That said, the food is so good, you won't even notice the few quirks! Pros: Food is Excellent, Waitstaff was Attentive, Exterior of Restaurant is Serene Cons: Interior is Bland, Parking is Limited more

Recommended, but there's room for improvement 7/26/2006

My wife and I ate at Cafe Mangu last night. Overall, I was impressed. Service was excellent; fast, attentive and friendly. I had the Churrasco Argentino, which was very good. Wife had the Lechon Asado, which was good, but not perfect. I think it could have been roasted a few more hours so that it was even more falling-off-the-bone. Plantains were great; I like 'em soft which is how they make them. I also had a Caipirinha, which was a little disappointing -- not like the Brazilian variety in which they thoroughly mash the limes so its fresh and kind of pulpy. I'm very glad to have found this restaurant because its good, its reasonably priced, and its just a lot more interesting than the usual chain joints in that part of town. Pros: Great menu selection, good food, reasonable prices Cons: My first experience with their drinks was not that great more

Great food, great service 7/26/2006

The garlic tilapia was incredible! Also had the yellow rice with plantains and sauce. Robert was our servr and he was wonderful! Very nice place, nice environment. Hubby had the slow roasted pork with sauce with black beans rice and yucca. All was yummy! We will return! Pros: Food more

Too Bland to be Real Dominican Food... 7/23/2006

Having grown up with Dominicans most of my life and after several trips to DR, I have a great sense of taste for their food. So when I heard of this new restaurant, I was so excited to finally have some homemade food, once again. The cafe is small and cute with merengue playing in the background, but the biggest disappointment was the food. I had the Pollo Asado. Both the chicken and rice were extremely bland, and the platanos were too soft. I thought I had found a little safe haven for my Caribbean fix, but I'd rather cook my own at home. Pros: Service, Ambience Cons: Food more

Caribbean delight at the right price 6/4/2006

Mangu hits the spot and doesn't hit up your pocketbook. The meals are delicious and extremely affordable. It is wortht the drive to get away and enjoy authentic caribbean food. I love caribbean food and Mangu doesn't dissapoint. Also enjoy the mojitos, they are spectacular. Pros: inexpensive, tasty, cozy more
