Best

The food was outstanding - their khao soi (a Northern Thai yellow curry with crispy and soft noodles) was spot-on, just as I've eaten in Thailand, and the spicyness was just right...

Worst

Brown sugar has great service. It has a romantic outlook. You can either sit inside or outside on those nice summer nights. They light candles. Dim lighting. Clean faciities, et...

One of my favorite Thai places in Boston. The food never disappoints. more

Do not order delivery service from this restaurant. They broke my doorbell and have not heard back from the owner to get reimbursed. more

good thai food close to BU and kenmore sq. Overall food is on par with what you would expect for price although some dishes can be significantly better. Pad thai from this place is really good. more

Cute place for pad thai 3/16/2010

The atmosphere and decor of this place surpasses all the other ethnic restaurants in the area!! I love the fish tank and authentic Oriental decoration. The service is pretty decent, and the food is really yummy! It's a bit pricier than takeout places like S&I, but the pad thai is to die for. They also have some sort of special Thai milkshakes or smoothies or something that my friends all love. I believe they also serve alcohol here. more

Great Food but expect to be rushed 2/8/2010

I have been to both of the Brown Sugar restaurants but most recently to the Comm Ave location. The Thai food here is excellent, my favorite dish is the sizzling platter with scallops and shrimp prepared right next to your table and served immedaitely. Its quite a sight when its brought over and I suggest you take advantage. The pineapple-based rice dishes are also very nice with really cool presentation.\r \r My problem with Brown Sugar is that its so cramped on Comm Ave I wonder if they even have the room to prepare the dish tableside. You're practically sitting on top of your neighbors and your food will arrive almost immediately after you order on a busy night. also, don't expect to sit after dinner, your waiter will ask to clear plates the minute they're remotely empty. \r \r The restaurants concern for turning over tables makes for an uncomfortable experience - so I don't usually go unless I plan on eating, paying, and getting out in under 30 minutes. \r \r Can't say i'm a huge fan, but maybe on Tuesday nights its a little more civil. Check out Khao Sarn in Brookline if you're looking for something a little slower (albeit out of the way). Pros: Sizzling platters! Prompt service... Cons: maybe a little too prompt, cramped dining room, pushy more

Run away from this place 9/23/2009

After reading all of your glowing reviews, I made the big mistake of eating here last night prior to an event at the Agganis Arena. We ordered a variety of items (fresh spring rolls, ribs, pad thai special of the day and spicy pork & green beans) they were all lacking in flavor, spice and culinary skill. This place is a mill where they churn out subpar food that all looks and tastes the same. They rush the food to your table and try to hustle you out to turn as many tables as possible. I can only assume they do not think you are coming back so crappy food and rushed service are the norm. Do not waste your time or money, eating at any of the fast food places nearby is a better bet than this place. Cons: food not very authentic, bathroom was filthy more

Fantastic Thai food with great service 5/3/2008

The food was outstanding - their khao soi (a Northern Thai yellow curry with crispy and soft noodles) was spot-on, just as I've eaten in Thailand, and the spicyness was just right. Service was efficient but unrushed and very friendly. If eating out in Boston I'd wholeheartedly recommend eating here. Pros: Great food, good value and excellent service Cons: - more

good food, sub-par service 4/12/2008

hostesses, not the happiest on earth. at peak times wait is longer than the meal itself. service is dependent on individual server. tables are placed very close to one another your rear end risks sweeping other people's food off their table. overall experience is... ""acceptable.""\r \r food, for the most part, is great, and they have about 20 kinds of pad thai for you to try at each visit! my personal fav is the roast duck red curry, although one time it was on a sweeter side of curry (which i like) and one time it was like szechuan spicy. \r :)\r Pros: totally T accessible (green line B), good food. Cons: street parking along comm ave hasn't been difficult, if you go early. nowhere but outside to wait during winter season. more

Great Atmosphere 9/27/2007

It's close to BU campus, so it's busy a lot of nights. Food was better than expected, the atmosphere was nice. I would recommend it for a first date. more

Good date place. 2/6/2007

Although I've never been on a date here, I've always wanted to. Located on Boston University's campus (West Campus if you're interested), Brown Sugar Cafe offers a huge menu, good food, pretty good prices, and a classy atmosphere. You'll be met with a long wait on the weekends though. And in case you're not from Boston, you should be warned there's not much parking, only on the street, which is taken up by BU students who live nearby. Take the T. Usually crowded. more

Great customer service 1/24/2007

Went with a friend and we both loved it. The food was great, the waitress kept our glasses full. The ambience was relaxed and still elegant. They have great duck. Pros: Great food Cons: Cold air drafts more

Best Thai I have ever had 11/26/2006

Brown Sugar is THE place to get Thai cuisine. As a native New Yorker, I have experience several Thai restaurants, and none of them measure up to this BU gem. Brown Sugar was reconstructed after a massive fire in 2003, and the ambience now is delightful! DO NOT MISS THIS TREASURE! Pros: AMAZING FOOD Cons: crowded, no reservations more

YUM! 10/30/2006

I went with a friend on a Saturday night, we arrived around 7:30, and had to wait about 15 minutes for a table which wasn't bad at all considering how crowded it was there. This was my first time trying Thai food, and being a picky eater I was skeptical, but everything I had was wonderful. We started with chicken skewers with a peanut dipping sauce that was wonerful, and for dinner I had a noodle dish with chicken and veggies, and it was delicious! The value here is great, you can get an entree for about $7, you can't beat that for dinner. Overall it was a great experience, but if you plan on going on a weekend night be ready for a little wait because everyone wants to eat there. Pros: Food, value more

I would not go to this restaurant on a weekend night 9/29/2006

We visited this restuarant on a Friday night with a party of seven. We had waited for 40 mintues and were then told by the hostess that she had made a ""mistake"" and we would need to wait another 30 minutes. We left at that point. Since the restaurant does not take reservations (even for large parties), I would expect it to at least have a moderately competent policy of getting customers a table. I find this to be another Boston restuarant serving moderately good food (I have eaten there before) geared to students who the restaurant considers not worthy of reasonable service. This problem seems endemic to far too many restaurants in Boston. Why can't restaurants take reservations guaranteed by your credit card? What is gained by requiring customers to wait an hour for a table? Cons: Horrible service. more

Excellent food at great prices. 7/18/2006

I really like Thai food. Good Thai food. It seems like that is the food of choice for the last couple of years and Thai restaurants are springing up in practically every strip mall all over the US. The Brown Sugar Cafe should NOT, repeat, NOT be lumped in with those restaurants. The service here was excellent (I don't think my water glass fell below about an inch from the top the whole time I was there) we were seated promptly and courteously and the wait staff was excellent. My partner had the Pad Thai (no other way to judge a Thai restaurant in our opinion) and I had the Thai fried rice with beef. Both were excellent, as was the fresh spring roll we had for an appetizer. The only warning I would give you is if you're not able to handle a little spice / heat, then be sure to order your dish mild. Pros: Great authentic food at excellent prices, wonderful wait staff Cons: Watch out for big groups seated in the back half of the restaurant more

Exquisite Thai, Exquisite Value 5/31/2006

If there is a Shangri-La of restaurants, Brown Sugar is it. Clearly they make the most of their location near Boston University with a simple formula: offer some of the best Thai food you'll find anywhere in the US + good-sized portions + attentive service + bargain prices = huge success. The college crowd and foreign tourists keep the tables full and turning-over quickly, and allow Brown Sugar to offer exqisitely prepared, fresh Thai food to the rest of us at prices that are almost astonishingly low. Our last dinner visit, four of us left quite full and happy, with a doggie bag, for $44.00 + a well deserved $9.00 tip (note: none of us ordered wine or liquor). A real find for entertaining family, friends, and kids, or just me and my bride of 34 years. more

Best spot for taking anyone for anything 3/10/2006

Beautiful decor, great thai food, wonderful atmosphere, great service. I come here for dates, group dinners, bringing friends visiting from out of town... and everyone leaves with a great memory and a full stomach. It's very busy during the weekends but the wait has never been more than 20min for me. The water glasses never stay empty, the dishes are well worth their price - the roast duck curry is amazing! The Thai iced tea is delicious here, not too sweet. And the menu is extensive - great for vegetarians & picky eaters! I cannot reccomend this place enough. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service Cons: Wish it were cheaper, I'd go every day more

One of the best resturants in Boston 2/28/2006

straight-up, if you live in or visit Boston, and claim to like Thai food, you need to hit place up ASAP. It's mindblowing. Pros: food, service Cons: none. more

Best Thai Food 2/1/2006

I've tried numerous thai restaurants both east & west coast but nothing comes close to Brown Sugar. I absolutely LUV this place except for service. But the food is SO good that I still go back despite bad service. If you're in Boston, it's an absolute must that you try this place. You won't regret it. more

not recommneded 12/27/2005
