I have lived in TX for 10 years and LOVE Texan BBQ. This place has a very nice environment, excellent service and a wonderful bar. The BBQ though is not what I would recommend. ...

A crowded restaurant means the food is great 2/28/2009

There's a reason it is crowded. The food is fantastic! They've won first prize in the national rib competition many times. A lousy restaurant is never crowded. The staff was wonderful about handling my food allergies. They gladly talked to the chef to make sure I didn't order anything with gluten in it. My salad was made separately so there were no crouton crumbs. Other restaurants just pick the croutons out and bring the same salad back to your table. My experience (many times) is that they went overboard to give good service along with their great food. Pros: best ribs and chicken, Ambience Cons: smaller crowds at off peak hours more

BEST BBQ 2/26/2009

Back Forty Texas BBQ has put the bay area on the map for BBQ. One of the first pioneers in contra costa county. . All the others can follow the big dog and try to compare. My family, with kids enjoy a weekday dinner out their weekly and love the family atmosphere and service. All the meats are top shelf , and the sauce recipe is from texas. true authentic sauce, maybe thats why they have won best sauce at the rib cook off many times. Will be back with my family and friends to get that sauce all over my face. outdoor seating during the summer was well enjoyed by my family. more

great food and drinks 2/26/2009

Back forty is getting a bad rap from you other folks on this site. They have great food! the specials on friday night are the best. the prices are cheaper than most places serving half the quality. I think you all should try it again or get you head out of your rear. The service is always great we sit in the bar and never had to complain only compliment. The Cadillac margarita kicks butt and the ribs have always been top notch. Happy Hour has great deals also thats why we can't get a seat sometimes. We highly reccomend it. Pros: great bar Cons: parking more

Poor service, poor quality, high prices 3/10/2008

I hadn't been to the new Back Forty but had been to the original in Pleasant Hill before and had throroughly enjoyed it. Wow...what a difference! I took my wife and two grown children for a brithday dinner back in January. It was terrible. After a long wait to get seated, then a longer wait to get someone to acknowledge we were here, we finally got waited on. The appetizer and food took a long long time. We had to hunt for the waitress to get about anything. The only thing worse than the service was the food and the prices. Our rib combo was dry and pretty much tasteless, the beef ribs were mainly bone with little meat. The salad looked like it had been dumped directly from a pre-mix lettuce bag from the grocery store. My daughter's steak, the most expensive, filet mignon, medium well, was bloody red...she wouldn't eat the whole thing. No one to complain to... I really expected a lot more for my $125 tab. Sorry to be so negative but there just were no positives the evening we were there. We won't be back. Pros: Looks nice inside. Cons: Service, food, price. more

A complete greasy dump 7/20/2007

Went to the "new" location on Coggins in Pleasant Hill. Wish we would have gone somewhere else. This place is overcrowded, overpriced and does not have a clue about real barbecue. Ribs were gross...so fatty they make you gag. Brisket is dry and tasteless, but on the bright side you get to chew it for a long time and get whatever flavor there is by the time it's been macerated enough to swallow. Service is clumsy and slow, servers are ill-informed about the menu, parking lot is a disaster, bar is loud and filled with crummy folks. And you get to wait up to an hour and a half for all this terrrific stuff. Pros: None Cons: poor quality, small portions, way overpriced more

Since they moved into their 3/26/2007

Since they moved into their new "oh so classy" place the food and service seems great. I love the sweet potato fries and the fact that they serve burgers now. They are very friendly. more

Being from Texas, I am insulted! 7/2/2006

OK service and atmosphere is a poor excuse for passing off marginal food. The ribs were overdone and covered up with what must be cattleman's or similar sauce. Yawn..... more
